The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, is one of the most serious insect pest and a vector for a multitude of viral diseases to many crops, vegetables, ornamentals, and fruit trees in the world. A large number of aphids can reduce plant vigor and cause defoliation. Many insecticides have been developed and applied to control the green peach aphid. However, this aphid has displayed a remarkable ability to establish resistance to almost every insecticide. We treated 5 different insecticides registered for M. persicae on pepper leaves and investigated the effects of the insecticides by measuring the time it took to achieve 90% control of the aphids. Acetamiprid worked faster than any other insecticides while cyantraniliprole showed the slowest insecticidal effect. Pymetrozine, pyrifluquinazon, and spirotetramet provided 90% control within similar time. Iwol population's control value was higher than any other populations 24 hours after treatment. When five different unregistered insecticides for M. persicae were treated on pepper leaves, no insecticidal effect was found for gamma-cyhalothrin and novaluron and spinosad showed an insecticidal effect of up to 70% in Iwol population only. Although chlorfenapyr and dinotefuran were not registered for M. persicae, their insecticidal effects were found to be 90% or higher.

Flupyrazofos (O,O-diethyl-O-(1-phenyl-3-trifluoromethyl-5-pyrazoyl)thiophosphoric acid ester) is a new organo-phosphorous insecticide. Flupyrazofos has exhibited excellent activity against diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella, DBM), and it is highly activity against rice armyworm(Pseudaleta separata) and cotton caterpillar(Palpita indicae). Flupyrazofos has then revealed outstanding both rapidity and residual action for DBM, although no systemic actions were observed and no cross-resistances were found to the resistance strains (Op-R, Py-R, IGR-R). Also, susceptibilities of five local strains to flupyrazofos were similar to those of the susceptible strain. These results indicate that flupyrazofos has considerable potential for controlling diamondback moth, rice armyworm and cotton caterpillar in field.
The agricultural industry is beset by continuing demands to decrease the use of pest control agents which employ toxic modes of action. Although there are real problems of pesticide resistance, and sometimes overuse or redistribution in the environment, much criticism results from a lack of appreciation of how small is the risk involved. Whatever the background reasons, research and development for pesticide alternatives, particularly within Integrated Pest Management systems, is clearly of high priority. Currently available approaches, including use of natural products and molecular biology, are often regarded with naive optimism and require critical appraisal. For the future, methods of pest control based on chemicals with non-toxic modes of action (e.g. pheromones) continue to offer promise but, for widespread use, will require their integration with biological agents and development by means of plant molecular biology.
Studies on the resistance monitoring of green peach ahpid, Myzus persicae, its development pattern by artificial selection with imidacloprid and cross-resistance were carried out to develope resistance management strategy. Resistance ratios of M. persicae collected at Hwachon and Dunnae among 5 locations in alpine cultivation area appeared to be high as 37.2 and 16.5, respectively. Resistance of aphid to imidacloprid developed slowly up to 20 time selection, and after that it grew quickly. Imidacloprid-resistant aphid strain showed low cross-resistance ratios(<10) to most of organophosphates, carbamates, and mixed insecticides except pirimicarb(487.8), but high ratios to acetamiprid(143.0) which is one of the neonicotinoids like imidacloprid, and pyrethroids such as deltamethrin(14.9), flucythrinate(12.9) and halothrin(15.9).

Two-point mutations (V419L and L925I) on the voltage-sensitive sodium channel of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are known to confer pyrethroid resistance. To determine the status of pyrethroid resistance in bed bugs in Korea, resistance allele frequencies of bed bug strains collected from several US military installations in Korea and Mokpo, Jeollanamdo, from 2009-2019 were monitored using a quantitative sequencing. Most bed bugs were determined to have both of the point mutations except a few specimens, collected in 2009, 2012 and 2014, having only a single point mutation (L925I). No susceptible allele was observed in any of the bed bugs examined, suggesting that pyrethroid resistance in bed bug populations in Korea has reached a serious level. Large scale monitoring is required to increase our knowledge on the distribution and prevalence of pyrethroid resistance in bed bug populations in Korea. Based on present study, it is urgent to restrict the use of pyrethroids and to introduce effective alternative insecticides. A nation-wide monitoring program to determine the pyrethroid resistance level in bed bugs and to select alternative insecticides should be implemented.
The local variabilities of resistance to Malathion and NAC (Sevin) were studied during 1973 with the strains of small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus Fallen) collected from Jinjoo, Sunsan, Milyang, Kwangjoo and Iri districts of southern part of Korea. The susceptible lab strain used for this study has been reared successively in the laboratory without exposure to any insecticide since 1970. The insecticides were applied topically in acetone to the thoracic sternum of the adult insects. $LD_{50}$ values of Malathion to the insect were varied with the locality of the planthoppers. Relatively high levels of resistance to Malathion were observed in the strains of Jinjoo and Suntan; showing 27.7 times in female and 24.9 times in male for Jinjoo stram and 18.4 times in female and 13.8 times in male for Sunsan strain as compared with the susceptible lab strain, and in other strains of Milyang, Kwangjoo and Iri the levels of resistance to Malathion were still less than 5 times. However, there was no any specific difference among the strains in susceptibility to NAC. The malathion-resistant strain of the small brown planthopper seemed to be still localized in some regions of· Korea. The susceptibility of the planthoppers to Malathion was varied with the sex; $LD_{50}$ values based on the individual (ug/insect) were higher in female than in male, while the values based on the body weight (ug/g) conversely higher in male than in female.
Cuticular penetration and detoxication as mechanisms of resistance to the carbamate insecticides in fenobucarb-selected($R_{f}$) and carbofuran-selected($R_{c}$) strains of the brown planthopper (N. lugens Stal) were investigated. Rates of penetration were not significantly different in the susceptible and resistant strains. However, total amount of excretion of the $R_{f}$ and $R_{c}$ strains were much larger than that of the susceptible strain. Fenovucarb and carbofuran were in vivo metabolizd much faster in the $R_{f}$ strain than in the susceptible strain. OSBP(o-sec-butyl phenol) and 3-ketocarbofuran phenol were invitro the major metabolites of fenobucarb and carbofuran in the brown planthopper, respectively. Total amount of the two major metabolites were produced abotu 2 times larger in the $R_{f}$ and $R_{c}$ strains compared to the susceptible strain. OSBP and 3-ketocarbofuran phenol were not so toxic to the brown planthopper ($LD_{50}$ >100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g hopper). Based on our data, detoxication plays a large role in resistance to fenobucarb and carbofuran in the resistant strain of BPH, although several resistance factors maybe involved.

Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, one of the most invasive insect pests, has spread quickly nationwide since it was introduced to South Korea in 2008. The use of insecticides is the main management strategy for this pest, but the control efficiency has been decreased due to insecticide resistance. We collected 12 local B. tabaci populations to investigate the regional differences in efficiency and observed the mortality from 14 commercial insecticides applied at recommended concentrations (RC) and dilutions (0.1 RC and 0.01 RC) using the leaf dipping bioassay. Except for etofenprox (46-64%), thiamethoxam (37-60%), pyriproxyfen (21-61%), and pyridaben (61-65%), the other insecticides showed excellent insecticidal efficacy of 70% to 100% at their RC. In particular, flupyradifurone, emamectin benzoate, and cyantraniliprole showed high insecticidal efficacy of over 90% in all of the tested populations. Some insecticides that rapidly decreased in activity (less than 30%) at diluted concentrations or showed high resistance levels in nearby regions were classified for cautious use due to the possibility or potential to develop resistance. The results provide selected insecticides for B. tabaci control by region and could contribute to reducing insecticide abuse and increasing insecticidal efficiency in farming fields.
General esterases were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively to see their role in deltamethrin resistance mechanisms of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. Selection with 0.1 g of deltamethrin in each generation induced the moth to decrease susceptibility to the insecticide and to increase esterase activities of the fourth instar larvae. Both characters were highly correlated so that the correlation coefficient (r) between LDSo @g) of deltamethrin and esterase activities (~M/min/pg) was 0.9918 (P=0.0082). Nondenaturing PAGE (6%) separated 17 esterase bands from the whole body extracts of the fourth instar larvae. Deltamethrin-selected populations had fewer esterase bands than had the unselected. Four esterase bands (E3, E4, Ell, and E13) were, however, specific to deltamethrin-selected populations.
The German cockroach (Blattella germanical L.) populations were successively selected with chlorpyrifos and permethrin for xis generations. The resulting resistant strains, $R_{chlorpyrifos}$(Rc) and $R_{permethrin}$(Rp) were observed resistant development and the cross-resistance. The result indicated that the values of $LC_{50}$ were increased 3.32 and 2.10 times from the susceptible strain, respectively. In the Rc strains, the values of the $LC_{50}$ of fenvalerate, propoxur, permethrin were to 3.89, 2.97, and 1.31 times higher than that of the suseptible, respectively. In the Rp strains, the values of the $LC_{50}$ of fenvalerate, chlorpyrifos, and propoxur showed 5.23, 1.42, and 1.80 times cross-resistance.
