A Suggestion of Fuzzy Estimation Technique for Uncertainty Estimation of Linear Time Invariant System Based on Kalman Filter

  • In order to control a LTI(Linear Time Invariant) system subjected to system noise and measurement noise, first of all, it is necessary to estimate the state of system with reliability. Kalman filtering technique has been widely used to estimate the state of the stochastic LTI system with stationary noise characteristics because of its estimation ability versus algorithm simplicity. However, it often fails to estimate the state of the LTI system of which system parameter uncertainty exists partly and/or input uncertainty exists. In this paper, a new estimation technique based on Kalman filter is suggested for stochastic LTI system under parameter uncertainty and/or input uncertainty. A fuzzy estimation algorithm against uncertainties is introduced so as to compensate the state estimate filtered by Kalman filter. In order to verify the state estimation performance of the suggested technique, several simulations are accomplished.

Gaussian noise estimation using adaptive filtering (적응적 필터링을 이용한 가우시안 잡음 예측)

  • In this paper, we propose a noise estimation method for noise reduction. It is based on block and pixel-based noise estimation. We assume that an input image is contaminated by the additive white Gaussian noise. Thus, we use an adaptive Gaussian filter and estimate the amount of noise. It computes the standard deviation of each block and estimation is performed on pixel-based operation. The proposed algorithm divides an input image into blocks. This method calculates the standard deviation of each block and finds the minimum standard deviation block. The block in flat region shows well noise and filtering effects. Blocks which have similar standard deviation are selected as test blocks. These pixels are filtered by adaptive Gaussian filtering. Then, the amount of noise is calculated by the standard deviation of the differences between noisy and filtered blocks. Experimental results show that our proposed estimation method has better results than those by existing estimation methods.

  • In this paper, an improved method for tracking maneuvering target is proposed. The proposed tracking filter is constructed by combining the input estimation approach with the variable dimension filtering approach. In this approach, the filter also provides the estimated time instant at which target starts maneuver, when the target maneuver is detected. Using this estimated maneuvering time, the maneuver input is estimated and the tracking system changes to the maneuver model. Simulations are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed tracking filter.

  • Tunnel fire accident is one of the critical railway accidents, together with collision and derailment. For the safe operation many tunnel design guidelines are proposed but many Korean railway tunnels do not satisfy these guidelines. For the safety improvement, current safety level is estimated in this study. But so many uncertainties in major input parameters make the safety estimation difficult. In this study, probabilistic techniques are applied for the consideration of uncertainties in major input parameters. As results of this study, probabilistic safety estimation code is developed.

Design of Robust Detector with Noise Variance Estimation Censoring Input Signals over AWGN

  • As an alternative to the classic linear detector which only assumes noise variance, a new robust detector with noise variance estimation censoring input signals over AWGN is proposed. The results demonstrate that analytic detection probability matches the simulation results for the linear detector and that the new robust detector shows better performance than the linear detector when the number of samples increases.

Comparative Study of Estimation Methods of the Endpoint Temperature in Basic Oxygen Furnace Steelmaking Process with Selection of Input Parameters

  • The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process in the steel industry is highly complicated, and subject to variations in raw material composition. During the BOF steelmaking process, it is essential to maintain the carbon content and the endpoint temperature at their set points in the liquid steel. This paper presents intelligent models used to estimate the endpoint temperature in the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process. An artificial neural network (ANN) model and a least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) model are proposed and their estimation performance compared. The classical partial least-squares (PLS) method was also compared with the others. Results of the estimations using the ANN, LSSVM and PLS models were compared with the operation data, and the root-mean square error (RMSE) for each model was calculated to evaluate estimation performance. The RMSE of the LSSVM model 15.91, which turned out to be the best estimation. RMSE values for the ANN and PLS models were 17.24 and 21.31, respectively, indicating their relative estimation performance. The essential input parameters used in the models can be selected by sensitivity analysis. The RMSE for each model was calculated again after a sequential input selection process was used to remove insignificant input parameters. The RMSE of the LSSVM was then 13.21, which is better than the previous RMSE with all 16 parameters. The results show that LSSVM model using 13 input parameters can be utilized to calculate the required values for oxygen volume and coolant needed to optimally adjust the steel target temperature.

Estimation of Parameters of the Linear, Discrete, Input-Output Model (선형 이산화 입력-출력 모형의 매개변수 결정에 관한 연구)

  • This study has two objectives. One is developing the runoff model for Hoe-Dong Reservoir basin located at the upstream of Su-Young River in Pusan. To develop the runoff model, basic hydrological parameters - curve number to find effective rainfall, and storage coefficient, etc. - should be estimated. In this study, the effective rainfall was calculated by the SCS method, and the storage coefficient used in the Clark watershed routing was cited from the report of P.E.B. The other is the derivation of transfer function for Hoe-Dong Reservoir basin. The linear, discrete, input-output model which contained six parameters was selected, and the parameters were estimated by the least square method and the correlation function method, respectively. Throughout this study, rainfall and flood discharge data were based on the field observation in 1981.8.22 - 8.23 (typhoon Gladys). It was observed that the Clark watershed routing regenerated the flood hydrograph of typhoon Gladys very well, and this fact showed that the estimated hydrological parameters were relatively correct. Also, the calculated hydrograph by the linear, discrete, input-output model showed good agreement with the regenerated hydrograph at Hoe-Dong Dam site, so this model can be applicable to other small urban areas. Parameter Estimation of Single and Decentralized Control Systems Using Pulse Response Data

  • The One Pass Method (OPM) previously presented for the identification of single input single output systems is used to estimate the parameters of a Decentralized Control System (DCS). The OPM is a linear and therefore a simple estimation method. All of the calculations are performed in one pass, and no initial parameter guess, iteration, or powerful search methods are required. These features are of interest especially when the parameters of multi input-output model are estimated. The benefits of the OPM are revealed by comparing its results against those of two recently published methods based on pulse testing. The comparison is performed using two databases from the literature. These databases include single and multi input-output process transfer functions and relevant disturbances. The closed loop responses of these processes are roughly captured by the previous methods, whereas the OPM gives much more accurate results. If the parameters of a DCS are estimated, the OPM yields the same results in multi or single structure implementation. This is a novel feature, which indicates that the OPM is a convenient and practice method for the parameter estimation of multivariable DCSs.

  • A linear input/output data-based predictive control with integral action is developed. The control input is obtained directly from the input/output data in a single step. However, the state estimation in subspace identification gives a biased estimate and there is model mismatch when the controller is applied to a nonlinear process. To overcome such difficulties, we add integral action to a linear input/output data-based predictive controller by augmenting the integrated white noise disturbance model and use each of best linear unbiased estimation(BLUE) filter and Kalman filter as a stochastic observer for the unmeasured disturbance. When applied to a continuous styrene polymerization reactor the proposed controller demonstrates.

  • This thesis deals with the design problem of the state estimator for digital servo system. Digital servo system has input time delay, which depends on the size of control algorithm. The delayed input is a factor that brings out the state estimation error. So, in order to reduce this state estimation error of the system, we proposes a state estimator in which the delayed input of the system is considered. At first, a discrete-time state-space model is established accounting for the delayed input. Next, the state estimator is designed based on this model. we employ Kalman filter algorithm in design of the state estimator. The performance of proposed state estimator is exemplified via some simulations and experiment for servo system. And robustness of the proposed estimator to modelling error by variation of the system parameter is also shown in these simulations.
