Effect of Inorganic Constituents Existing in Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) on Features of Pyrolysis Products (팜 부산물에 존재하는 무기성분이 급속열분해 생성물의 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effect of inorganic constituents on the physicochemical properties of pyrolytic products produced from empty fruit bunch (EFB) by fast pyrolysis were investigated. Inorganic constituents were removed from the EFB by means of washing treatment with hydrofluoric acid (HF) and distilled water (D.I water). Ash content decreased from 6.2 wt% (EFB) to 2.4 wt% (HF-EFB) and 3.5 wt% (D.I-EFB), respectively. As a result of the inorganic component, a quantity of potassium in EFB has showed the highest removal efficiency in both HF and D.I water (HF: 80.3%, D.I water: 72.8%). Fast pyrolysis was performed with demineralized EFB in the fluidized bed reactor under the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ at the residence time of 1.3 sec. The yield of bio-oil was determined to 57.3 wt% for HF-EFB and 52.1 wt% for D.I-EFB, respectively. Biochar yield decreased whereas yield of non-condensable gas increased with decreasing inorganic content of EFB. Water content decreased from 26.9% (EFB) to 9.9% (HF-EFB) and viscosity increased from 16.1 cSt (EFB) to 334 cSt (HF-EFB).

Study on the Improved Abrasion Resistance of Polycarbonate Substrate by UV-curable Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Coatings (자외선 경화형 유기/무기 복합코팅에 의한 폴리카보네이트의 내마모성 향상 연구)

  • Transparent, abrasion resistant coatings with 4~13 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were prepared by spin-coating on polycarbonates with organic/inorganic hybrid solutions, followed by UV curing and heat treatment at 12$0^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours. The coating solutions were composed of inorganic phase and organic phase in 0:100, 20:80, 30:70, 50:50, 80:20 wt% ratios, respectively, mixed with photoinitiator, senaitizer and surfactant. The inorganic phase was formed by sol-gel reaction of TEOS and silane coupling agent MPTMS in 1 : 2 or 2 : 1 molar ratios, the organic phase consisted of difunctional urethane acrylate oligomeric resin, multifunctional acrylate TMPTA and HDDA in 4 : 3 : 3 wt% ratio. The coating systems were investigated by FT-IR, $^{29}$ Si-NMR spectra. In addition, TGA/DSC for thermal analysis and SEM, AFM observation for coated surface were examined. Gererally, the homogeneity of phases, the surface smoothness of coating and abrasion resistance were improved with the higher content of inorganic component. Namely, coating system with below 10 $\AA$ surface roughness and T$_{g}$ of 15$0^{\circ}C$ showed only 10% decrease in light transmittance after abrasion test, whereas uncoated polycarbonate substrate exhibited 46% decrease..

Atmospheric Concentrations of PAHs in the Vapor and Particulate Phases in Chongju

  • Four intensive seasonal sampling campaigns between October 1998 and October 1999 were undertaken at an urban site of Chongju, in which polyurethane foam (PUF) sampler was used to collect particulate- and vapor-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The contribution to total (particulate+vapor) PAH concentration by the vapor phase component exceeded the particulate phase contribution by factor of ${\sim}2.6$. Summed concentrations of phenanthrene (30.9%), pyrene (16.6%), naphthalene (11.3%) and fluoranthene (11.0%) account for significant amounts of the vapor-phase, while chrysene (12.5%), benzo[b]fluoranthene (11.6%), indeno[123-cd]pyrene (9.9%), benzo[ghi]perylene (9.5%), benzo[k]fluoranthene (9.4%), pyrene (8.9%), and benzo[a]pyrene (8.3%) are found to be the most common PAH compounds in the particulate phase. The results from application of principal component analysis to particulate-phase PAH data demonstrate that a combination of PAH and $PM_{2.5}$ inorganic data is a more powerful tracer of emission sources than PAH species data alone. Particulate-phase PAH species were found to be associated predominantly with emissions from diesel engine vehicles and incineration.

Tyrosinase Activated Inhibition Effect & Analysis of Pine-Needles Extract (솔잎 추출물의 티로시나아제 활성억제 효과 및 분석)

  • We extracted pine-needles using ethanol as solvent, and we obtained the refined oil component from pine-needles extract. Also we tested the tyrosinase activated inhibition effect with melanin experiment and analysed with ICP/OES and UV/VIS. Accordingly we obtained the next conclusion from the result of this experiment. From the first result of this experiment, we could know that the degree of recovery of refined oil component from pine-needles extract appeared in about 8.0%. From the second result of this experiment, we could know that the tyrosinase activated inhibition rate increased more and more in case of increasing concentration of pine-needles, green-tea, vitamine-C. Also we could know that vitarnine-C influences to tyrosinase activated inhibition contained in pine-needles. From the third result of this experiment, we could know that inorganic materials of Ca, Mg, V, Mn, etc contained in pine-needles detected with ICP/OES analysis, and the absorbance of pine-needles extract appeared very high in UV/VIS analysis.

A Study on the Pharmaceutical & Chemical Characteristics and Analysis of Natural Curcumin Extract (천연 강황 추출물의 약리, 화학적 특성 및 분석)

  • Natural Curcumin belongs to Zingiber Officinale Roscoe was known to possess natural odor, natural taste, natural color, and other pharmaceutical & chemical characteristics. Natural Curcumin extract was made to use ethanol as a solvent was to show a yellow color having state of solid powder and an active component. Natural Curcumin extract tested pharmaceutical & chemical experiment to dilute in curcumin 1%-water solution. Curcumin extract tested antimicrobial experiment using microbe, and tested dye experiment using fiber. Some conclusions in the result of characteristics experiment was obtained as follow. The result of antimicrobial experiment showed that the growth of staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-001) and aspergillus niger (ATCC-002) as microbes decreased according to passage of time. This phenomenon could know that Curcumin compoment showed influence to antimicrobial effect. Also, the result of dye experiment showed that cotton and sick with fiber dyeing dyed in direction of dark yellow color. This phenomenon could know that Curcumin extract showed influence to dyeing effect in observation of optical electron microscope(OEM.) The result of instrument analysis ascertained inorganic components of K(53.300ppm), Na(1.150ppm), Ca(0.711ppm), Ti(0.351ppm), Li(0.256ppm), Cu(0.233ppm) etcs from Curcumin component with ICP/OES, and ascertained organic components of propanoic acid(1.859), benzene(10.814), phenol(14.194) etcs from Curcumin component with GC/MSD.

The Component Analysis of Foreign Substance Occurred in Water Distribution Networks (상수관망에서 발생하는 이물질의 성분분석)

  • Customers water quality complaints by foreign substance in local water service can be able to call the main cause bring the distrust for tap water and inhibiting the rate of drinking water. In this study, foreign substances were collected in the target region. Foreign objects were subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis of compounds and elements components to reveal the cause of detection. Also, resolve the complaints by foreign substance and improve the reliability for tap water providing high quality water supply scheme. Collected substances at the water quality complaint area were included in inorganic compounds due to internal corrosion and aging pipeline, as well as organic compounds containing a large amount of carbon (C) and oxygen (O) component. To decide and reduce for foreign substance, objective assessment of pipe condition in target area was required.

A Study on Remediation Method of Diesel-Contaminated Railroad Soil using $TiO_2$-MMT ($TiO_2$-MMT를 이용한 디젤오염 철도토양의 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • Soil pollution around railroad has been occurred mainly by diesel and lubricant oil, which is difficult to treat due to high carbon number. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of inorganic-inorganic nanohybrid photo-catalyst for the remediation of diesel-contaminated railroad soil. Generally, the $TiO_2$ nanoparticle easily removes organic pollutants due to photo and natural clay of layer structure. Also, montmorillonite (MMT) have an excellent absorption property with organic component. So, we prepared $TiO_2$ pillared MMT nanohybrid photo-catalyst as a chemical oxidant through the integration of theses advantage. As a result, the removal efficiency of diesel was more than 45% at a laboratory-scale test with diesel concentration and the amount of $TiO_2$-MMT. In future, we will improve the removal efficiency of diesel to optimize experimental parameters and apply the field soil The remediation method using photo-catalyst can be used to clean up the railroad soil polluted with high concentration instead of common methods such as soil washing, bioremediation, etc..

Microbial Community Structure of Paddy Soil Under Long-term Fertilizer Treatment Using Phospholipid Fatty Acid (PLFA) Analysis

  • Understanding the microbial community structure of agricultural soils is important for better soil management in order to improve soil quality. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis has been popularly used in determining the microbial community structure in different ecosystems. The microbial community structure of paddy soil under long-term fertilizer treatments was investigated after 45 years using PLFA analysis. Treatments were control (no fertilization, Con), compost (COM), NPK, NPK+compost (NPKC), PK, NK, and NP. Soil chemical properties were mainly affected by the addition of compost and inorganic P fertilizer. Total nitrogen and organic matter contents were significantly higher in treatments with compost while available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable calcium were significantly higher in treatments with added inorganic P fertilizer. It was found that microbial communities were responsive to the different fertilizer treatments. PLFA results showed that the soils were dominated by gram-negative bacteria, followed by the actinomycetes, then gram-positive bacteria, and fungi. Principal component analysis of the soil chemical properties and PLFA composition proved to be a more reliable tool because it was more responsive to the changes in soil chemical properties.

  • Strontium barium niobate, (Sr$\sub$0.5/Ba$\sub$0.5/Nb$_2$O$\sub$6/), thin films of various composition were prepared by the sol-gel method. Solution derived from acetate powders and niobium ethoxide in a mixture of acetic acid, ethylene glycol and 2-methoxyehanol was spin-coated onto bare silicon, Pt-coated silicon and fused silica substrates. Processing parameters were optimized to develop stable solutions which yielded films with relatively low crystallization temperatures. It was determined that ethylene glycol was a necessary component of the solution to increase stability against precipitation and to decrease the crystallization temperature of the films as confirmed by XRD and FT-IR analyses.

Performance of Double Composite Landfill Liner considering Leakage Rate and Mass Flux

  • Performance of a landfill liner is evaluated based on leakage rate and mass flux. In this study, the recently utilized double composite liner system, which consists of a geomembrane (GM), a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), a GM, and a compacted clay layer (61 or 91.5 cm) is compared with other popular composite liners including the single GCL system, the Subtitle D liner system, and the Wisconsin NR500 liner system. The leakage rate through circular and long defects in the GM of the landfill liners is analyzed using numerical models. For the mass flux criterion, the analyses of inorganic contaminant transport through defects in the GM component of liner systems and diffusion of organic compounds through intact landfill liners are conducted using three- and one-dimensional numerical models, respectively. Cadmium and toluene are used in the analyses as a typical inorganic and organic substance, respectively, which will be chemical species encountered during landfill operation. The comparison shows that the double composite liner systems are superior to the other liner systems according to the performance-based evaluation.
