Although service innovation is not a new concept, innovation research in general tends to focus on technological innovation by manufacturing firms. With this view, innovation studies focus on product(e.g., goods) and process(e.g., product systems) innovation, ignoring service innovation and its inherent opportunities. Since major economy has been transformed to service economy, service innovation is considered a new effective way to sustain and gain a competitive advantage. Service innovation is no longer regarded merely as a side activity to product innovation; it has become a main research topic in its own right, accompanied by an increasing focus on services. While the number of service innovation studies has increased dramatically in the past 30 years in international research, few studies have been performed in domestic studies because domestic service innovation research began from the middle of 2000. In addition, there are no comprehensive literature reviews describing the evolution of service innovation research in both international and domestic studies because of the heterogeneities of service industry and multidiscipline characteristics of service innovation studies. To bridge this research gap, the purpose of this paper is to perform an extensive literature review and synthesis to enable a critical review of extant research on service innovation and trace its evolution, which will establish a foundation for further studies. By reviewing 169 articles (136 international papers; 33 domestic papers) published between 2000 and 2014 (in past 15 years), primarily in leading service, innovation and management information systems journals, this study analyzes the progression of service innovation research according to the four aspects such as number of studies, topics, methodologies and target industries. Overall, the view of service innovation has evolved, from a complement of traditional product innovation to a multidimensional, all-encompassing concept that entails several functions, both within and outside the firms. The results showed that domestic research still stays at the formation phase of service innovation studies although international research is in the maturity or multidimensional phase. We found increasing recent activities pertaining to service innovation, resulting from the increasing interest in services innovation across various industries and the links of new topics to the service innovation concept in both international and domestic studies. However, the main focus of service innovation research showed a different propensity between international and domestic studies: the former mainly focuses on a much more diversified pattern, emphasizing the linkages between service innovation and business strategy while the latter mainly focuses on the service innovation process(system) and service design. In addition, there are many case studies in domestic studies while many empirical studies in international studies. Domestic studies should increases the understanding of the interplay between service innovation and product innovation within manufacturing firms. Furthermore, rather than focusing on intrinsic distinctions between service innovation and product innovation, researchers should strive to develop and conceptualize service innovation in domestics studies. The present research also provides useful implications for practitioners. First, this study contributes to expand the current understanding of service innovation research by performing an extensive literature review. Second, tracing and comparing the progression and trends of service innovation research between international and domestic studies, this study showed the similarities and differences between them, which provide practical guidance on future research directions and research agenda. Third, this study performed literature review establishing the analysis system in the initial stage and using them to analyze articles, which is leading to explain the research review of service innovation more systematically and objectively. Finally, this study suggests the domestic researchers their future interests and topics of service innovation research.

Social enterprises pursue innovation to create socio-economic impact for the marginalized communities. The founders of social enterprises drive goal-oriented innovation, whereas, interactions with ecosystem is crucial to create and diffuse innovation. However, studies are scant on creation as well as diffusion of innovation emerging from social enterprises. This paper attempts to understand innovation emerging from social enterprises through an exploration of innovation focus, interactions with ecosystem, and measurement of innovation performance. A cross-sectional study is performed to understand the relationship between founders' orientation and innovation performance, and the mediating role of innovation focus and ecosystem interactions. A cluster sampling across four states in India - Karnataka, Telangana, Maharastra and Tamil Nadu - resulted in participation from 207 social enterprises. The results of partial least squared structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) demonstrate the positive complementary mediating role of innovation focus in the relationship between founders' orientation and innovation performance. Moreover, this paper illustrates that founders' persistent focus on innovation creates positive results for social enterprises as well as beneficiaries.

This study aims at developing some hypotheses on the politics of innovation in catching-up countries. Although innovation studies of catching-up countries have studied the process of acquisition of technological capabilities, the politics of innovation was not seriously considered in those studies. This study suggests a conceptual frame-works of the innovation politics and analyses the innovation process of mobile telecommunication system in Korea. Some hypotheses on the patterns and effects of innovation politics in catching-up countries are put forward.

This paper reviews the emerging literature on innovation policy from a practitioner's perspective, reviews the policy implications of an evolutionary perspective in economics, and identifies newly emerging areas of innovation policy analysis. We show that an innovation system is a dominant policy discourse, that there are limits of policy implications from an evolutionary perspective, and that there is a need for explicitly policy motivated analysis grounded in a broad evolutionary perspective. Innovation policy studies are an area in pre-paradigmatic stages whose dynamism originates from the interaction of theory, policy, and policy learning. The limited usefulness of policy implications derived directly from either conceptual or empirical analysis requires more explicitly policy focused research.

This article reviews studies on the societal challenge and technological innovation. Technological innovation in response to social problems is a relatively recent topic of Innovation Studies. Socially-oriented innovations and policies are different in terms of the goals, innovation processes, and ecosystems when compared with industrial innovation. This study examines the existing research that discusses science and technology innovation from the viewpoint of solving societal problems and discusses the direction of future research. This paper presents major research issues on the characteristics of innovation in societal problem solving, innovation governance, roles and ecosystem of innovators, and relationship between societal problem solving policies and other policies.

This paper, based on two engineering industry SME case studies, traces the origin and process of technological innovations enabling the development and introduction of new products leading to market expansion and enterprise growth. The study throws light on how entrepreneurs played a decisive role in recognizing market opportunities, building up crucial in-house technological capability, supplementing it with appropriate external assistance, to carry out technological innovations. A constant interaction with its customers is in-built into the system. As a result, the SMEs could achieve successful product innovations leading to their gradual growth, over time. Finally, based on the observations and inferences derived out of the two cases, a theoretical construct of the growth of innovation in SMEs is postulated. This is done linking the three stages of their development: (i) start-up and stabilizing, (ii) building up technological capability and implementing innovations; and (iii) opening up of new markets resulting in firm growth.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to introduce the development trend of international standard in the innovative management system and propose the application method of the standard for SME certification system. Methods: This study is based on literature studies and case studies considering the initial stage of development of standards as well as lack of domestic and international research examples. In the literature review, we focused on the characteristics of the innovation management system standards at the national, regional and global level. We examined case studies of Spain and Portugal as case studies. Besides, the evaluation items and certification status of domestic innovative SMEs certification were also searched to find out how to introduce them in Korea. Results: The results of this study can be summarized in three major points. First, new international standards of innovation management are being developed under the ISO management system standard and are currently in the DIS stage. Second, in the case of Spain adopting the national innovation management system standard, it has been reported that the innovation management system standard has a significant effect on the innovation ability and management performance. Third, it was not easy to establish a standardized innovation process between the innovation based on creativity and the standardized based product. The Oslo manual was not enough to provide enough guidance in this area. Conclusion: Companies that want to strengthen their organizational innovation capabilities from a management system point of view and Policymakers that want to plan the upgrading and integrated certification operating system of the domestic innovation SME certification need to consider the ISO 50500 series as a global level standard other than the Oslo manual.

Today the role of information systems directly affects the goals and operations of companies and is being strategic. Most of Information System Departments (ISD), however, have been losing the credibility due to their failure to respond effectively to their counterparts in the rapidly changing environment. The purpose of this research is to propose a theoretical framework which systematically studies the innovation of ISD. It is intended to understand the critical factors which have an effect on each level of ISD innovation process. It is also intended to understand the performance of ISD innovation through the innovation process. Besides, we try to clarify the conceptual difference between IS innovation, Information Technology innovation, and ISD Innovation. As a result, we propose the structural model for ISD innovation research by analyzing the innovation theory and previous IS innovation studies.

Many Korean companies wanted to improve technological competitiveness and business performance radically through technology leadership initiatives. In-depth case studies about successful Korean technological innovation in the technology generation stage have potential to minimize Korea and developing country firms' trial and error when they are pursuing new technological innovation in the technology generation stage. There are few studies about developing country firms' technological innovations in the technology generation stage and especially process innovation studies are far less performed compared to product innovation studies. This is an exploratory study of POSCO's FINEX process technology innovation in the technology generation stage. These are my findings from this study. Firstly, leadership innovation in the technology generation stage is not a continuous development of catch-up innovation in the technology internalization stage and only top managements can initiate highly risky leadership innovation. Secondly, developing country firms which lacked in technological capability overcomes difficulties in the early stage through complementary technological collaboration with R&D first-movers. Thirdly, this company become a technology leader in spite of late entry in technology development race with developed country firms through rapid scale-ups.
