The cross flow turbine attracts more and more attention for its relatively wide operating range and simple structure. In this study, a novel type of micro cross flow turbine is developed for application to a step in an irrigational channel. The head of the turbine is only H=4.3m and the turbine inlet channel is open ducted type, which has barely been studied. The efficiency of the turbine with inlet open duct channel is relatively low. Therefore, a guide nozzle on the turbine inlet is attached to improve the performance of the turbine. The guide nozzle shapes are investigated to find the best shape for the turbine. The guide nozzle plays an important role on directing flow at the runner entry, and it also decreases the negative torque loss by reducing the pressure difference in Region 1. There is 12.5% of efficiency improvement by attaching a well shaped guide nozzle on the turbine inlet.

In this study, to examine the effect of a hole size change(smaller hole diameter) in the outer region of the lower-support-structure-bottom plate(LSSBP) on the reactor core-inlet flow-distribution, simulations were conducted with the commercial CFD software, ANSYS CFX R.15. The predicted results were compared with those of the original LSSBP. Through these comparisons, it was concluded that a more uniform distribution of the mass flow rate at the core-inlet plane could be obtained by reducing the hole size in the outer region of the LSSBP. Therefore, from the nuclear regulatory perspective, design change of the hole pattern in the outer region of the LSSBP may be desirable in terms of improving both the mechanical integrity of the fuel assembly and the core thermal margin.

Lack of the space in many diesel vehicles make it difficult to design and install the catalytic muffler to reduce emissions. For this reason, inlet part of the catalytic muffler is made of L-type which has lower flow uniformity than conventional I-type, and catalytic muffler has complex internal structure by various insertions, which affect the flow uniformity and pressure drop of the systems. In this work, the flow characteristics such as flow uniformity and pressure drop have been numerically investigated by changing such various geometries as inlet shape, porosity, and outlet shape inside the muffler with the three-dimensional turbulent incompressible flow solver. Total 4 different cases are considered in order to find optimal configurations of the catalytic muffler in view of high flow uniformity and low pressure drop. The results show that Case 2 which has no induction cone and outlet perforated pipe has higher uniformity index and lower pressure drop than others considered in this work.

Because of complex structure of inlet and outlet flows, the performance of centrifugal fans used in a household refrigerator is affected by many parameters of duct system surrounding the fans. In this paper, the performance of a centrifugal fan is numerically analysed according to shapes of inlet bell-mouth. To improve performance of the centrifugal fan, some design parameters are selected for comparison. On a basis of these comparison, optimum shape of inlet bell-mouth is proposed to maximise the flow rate of the fan.

Steady state turbulent airflow and unsteady characteristics of generation, transportation, and recovery behavior of contaminate particles in the simplified 2 dimensional Vertical Laminar Flow (VLF) type clean room was numerically simulated using the low Reynolds number k-over bar.epsilon- turbulent model. Characteristics of airflow in VLF type clean room are greatly affected by the recirculation zone around working surface. The recirculation zone must be considered at the time of clean room design because the recirculation zone whose area increases with increment of inlet velocity exerts bad influence upon the performance of clean room in terms of particle contamination. The location of maximum particle concentration changes from the location of particle source to the recirculation zone, while averaged particle concentration is reduced exponentially with time. Recovery time of clean room with spontaneous particle generation source is inversely proportional to inlet velocity. We introduce nondimensionalized recovery time through the dimensional analysis, which can indicates the general performance of clean room with design structure change. It was identified that .tau. is independent of inlet velocity and background concentration. Therefore .tau. can be the simple factor to compare the different structure of clean room in terms of dynamic response to contamination and becomes larger with better structure of clean room.

This work is to observe the wake flow generated behind a ramp. We have conducted a large eddy simulation with two ramp models having different heights with two different inflow conditions. Reynolds number based on the height of the large ramp (LR) and small ramp (SR) are Reh = 2.8×104 and 1.4×104 respectively. The wake flow visualization shows the formation of streamwise counter-rotating vortices pairs at the downstream of the obstacle. These primary vortices are stretched and lifted up when moving downstream. In order to observe the effect of the inflow condition on the wake transition, two different inlet flow conditions are given on the inlet section as an inlet boundary condition. Induced counter-rotating vortices pairs due to sharp-edged triangular ramp obstacles are developed and propagated downstream. In the result, the large ramp shows a more complicated wake structure of the boundary layer than the small ramp.

Internal structures, especially those located in the upstream of a reactor core, may have a significant influence on the core inlet flow rate distribution depending on both their shapes and the relative distance between the internal structures and the core inlet. In this study, to examine the effect of the reactor internal structure geometry treatment method on the prediction accuracy for the scale-down APR+ flow distribution, simulations with real geometry modeling were conducted using ANSYS CFX R.14, a commercial computational fluid dynamics software, and the predicted results were compared with those of the porous medium assumption. It was concluded that the core inlet flow distribution could be predicted more accurately by considering the real geometry of the internal structures located in the upstream of the core inlet. Therefore, if sufficient computational resources are available, an exact representation of these internal structures, for example, lower support structure bottom plate and ICI nozzle support plate, is needed for the accurate simulation of the reactor internal flow.

The CUPID code has been developed for a transient, three-dimensional, two-phase flow analysis at a component scale. It has been validated against a wide range of two-phase flow experiments. Especially, to assess its applicability to single- and two-phase flow analyses in the Calandria vessel of a CANDU nuclear reactor, it was validated using the experimental data of the 1/4-scaled facility of a Calandria vessel at the STERN laboratory. In this study, a preliminary thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CANDU reactor moderator tank using the CUPID code is carried out, which is based on the results of the previous studies. The complicated internal structure of the Calandria vessel and the inlet nozzle was modeled in a simplified manner by using a porous media approach. One of the most important factors in the analysis was found to be the modeling of the tank inlet nozzle. A calculation with a simple inlet nozzle modeling resulted in thermal stratification by buoyance, leading to a boiling from the top of the Calandria tank. This is not realistic at all and may occur due to the lack of inlet flow momentum. To improve this, a new nozzle modeling was used, which can preserve both mass flow and momentum flow at the inlet nozzle. This resulted in a realistic temperature distribution in the tank. In conclusion, it was shown that the CUPID code is applicable to thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CANDU reactor moderator tank using the cost-effective porous media approach and that the inlet nozzle modeling is very important for the flow analysis in the tank.
Purpose: Methods: Three-dimensional CFD modeling was conducted to analyze the flow structure and discharge flow rate corresponding to the variation in the geometry of the flow channel in a microtube. Additionally, experiments were carried out, and the discharge flow rate was measured at various inlet pressures and inclination angles of the microtube. Results: The quantitative data of velocity distribution and discharge flow rate were obtained. As the width and length of the microtip increased, the discharge flow rate decreased significantly because of the increase in the loss of pressure along the microtube. As the depth of the microtip increased, the flow rate also increased because of the reduction in the flow resistance. However, in this analysis, the variation in the angle of the microtip did not influence the flow rate. From the experimental results, it was observed that the flow rate increased linearly with the increase in the inlet pressure, and the effects of the inclination angle were not clearly observed in those test cases. The values of the flow rate obtained from the experiments were significantly lower than that obtained from the CFD analysis. This is because of the distortion of the shape of the flow path inside the microtube during the fabrication process. The distortion of the flow path might decrease the flow cross-sectional area, and it would increase the flow resistance inside the microtube. The variation in the flow rate corresponding to the variation in the inlet pressure showed similar trends. Conclusions: Therefore, the results of the numerical analysis obtained from this study can be efficiently utilized for optimizing the shape of the microtip inside a microtube.
Secondary flows have a huge impact on losses generation in modern low pressure gas turbines (LPTs). At design point, the interaction of the blade profile with the end-wall boundary layer is responsible for up to 40% of total losses. Therefore, predicting accurately the end-wall flow field in a LPT is extremely important in the industrial design phase. Since the inlet boundary layer profile is one of the factors which most affects the evolution of secondary flows, the first main objective of the present work is to investigate the impact of two different inlet conditions on the end-wall flow field of the T106A, a well known LPT cascade. The first condition, labeled in the paper as C1, is represented by uniform conditions at the inlet plane and the second, C2, by a flow characterized by a defined inlet boundary layer profile. The code used for the simulations is based on the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) formulation and solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the Spalart Allmaras turbulence model. Secondly, this work aims at estimating the influence of viscosity and turbulence on the T106A end-wall flow field. In order to do so, RANS results are compared with those obtained from an inviscid simulation with a prescribed inlet total pressure profile, which mimics a boundary layer. A comparison between C1 and C2 results highlights an influence of secondary flows on the flow field up to a significant distance from the end-wall. In particular, the C2 end-wall flow field appears to be characterized by greater over turning and under turning angles and higher total pressure losses. Furthermore, the C2 simulated flow field shows good agreement with experimental and numerical data available in literature. The C2 and inviscid Euler computed flow fields, although globally comparable, present evident differences. The cascade passage simulated with inviscid flow is mainly dominated by a single large and homogeneous vortex structure, less stretched in the spanwise direction and closer to the end-wall than vortical structures computed by compressible flow simulation. It is reasonable, then, asserting that for the chosen test case a great part of the secondary flows details is strongly dependent on viscous phenomena and turbulence.
