The rheological properties of an ink relate to its performance on the press and to the printing quality. So it is necessary to analyze the relationship between printability and the rheological properties of ink. Transfer rate of ink is one of the important factor deciding print quality. And it is concerned with rheological properties of ink. Thus, in this study, according to the molecular weight of rosin modified phenolic resin the rheological properties of ink were measured by rotational rheometer and then transfer equation of ink, density and gloss were mesured in order to examine the printability of ink.

Relationship between printability and rheological properties of UV flexographic (flexo) inks were investigated. UV flexo suspensions of carbon black in liquid medium having various binding materials such as acylate pre-polymer, di/multi-functional monomer, and diluents, were used as sample inks. Inks were characterized on a rheometer in terms of steady and dynamic behaviors. To understand the rheological properties of UV flexo inks, we must determine the specific rheological properties of chemical and/or physical interactions of their components (pigments, functional monomers, and pre-polymers). In particular, we discussed the influence of multi-functional monomers and the relationship between the rheological properties and transient networks formed by carbon black. In this study, we investigated the interrelationships between rheological properties of UV flexo inks and chemical and/or physical interactions of their components. To investigate correlations between the printability and the rheological behaviors induced by interfacial interactions between ink compositions, we carried out rheological tests of UV ink suspensions. The results were compared with printing tests so as to find out the relationship between printability and rheological properties of ink.
In lithography based on repulsion of ink and water emulsification is inevitably generated. Thus it is necessary to analyze relationship between printability and physical and chemical properties of emulsified ink. Transfer rate of ink is one of the important factor deciding print quality. And it is closely concerned with rheological properties of emulsified ink. Rheological properties such as flow, yield, plastic viscosity, creep, oscillation and tack tests were measured. In order to examine printability of emulsified ink, ink transfer equations, density, ink film thickness and gloss were measured.
The one of the most important issue in roll-to-roll gravure printing is increase of ink transfer ratio or printability. As the result of high ink transfer ratio or printability, we can assess the quality of the printed patterns. The rheological properties are the important factors for the printability of electrodes patterning. In this study, the rheological properties of conductive ink are controlled by adding the solvent. The inks with different rheological properties are used for the patterning of the electrodes of $100{\mu}m$ by gravure printing equipment. The various printing speed, which also affect the rheological properties of conductive ink, is applied and the printed patterns are compared for their width and aspect ratio. Decreasing in the ink viscosity as well as increasing in the printing speed decreases the printability in gravure patterning, which shows that the rheological properties are important factors for the printability of gravure patterning.
The rheological characteristics of an ink relate to its performance on the press and to the printing quality such as ink stability, transfer characteristics, mottle, squash, misting, dot gain, and so on. For lithographic print, the emulsification of ink is an important factor to determine the product. And also the rheological characteristics of the emulsified ink should be investigated. Thus, in this study, the effects of the changing molecular weight of rosin modified phenolic resin on the water-pickup ratio of neat inks were studied. And then rheological properties of neat inks and emulsified inks with changing molecular weight of rosin modified phenolic resin were analyzed by using rotational rheometer.
The computer simulation is presented of gravure ink transferring behavior and penetration to the paper when an gravure roller is used to transfer a printing ink onto a substrate. The three dimensional unsteady ink motion is simulated by Polyflow package software and experimented by IGT gravure printing test machine. The simulation is performed where the flow domain is bounded above by a stress free surface and bounded below by a moving substrate. Specific predictions are made for particular pattern of cells and substrates. Cell size and ink rheological properties are found to be the principal determination of transferring behavior. Simulation is currently restricted to the flow domain beneath the receding meniscus. Both Newtonian and shear thinning inks are considered.
The rheological properties of emulsified ink must be maintained adequately at various shear rates or shear stress. So it is necessary to understand its rheological properties in order to regulate the printability of eumulsified ink on the performance. In this study, the rheological properities and printability of emulsified ink are investigated according to the molecular weights of rosin-modified phenolic resin.
In these days, according to increased environmental regulations, to reduce the VOC content in paints and inks efforts are now in progress. A lot of research have progressed hydrocarbon solvents substitute with vegetable oil or ester in the printing ink but it is restricted to use vegetable oil in the inks because of high molecular weight and viscosity. Oil ester currently developed for printing inks still have some drawbacks, but overall the printability and print quality when using ester than hydrocarbon solvents are showing good results. Thus, in this paper, I studied about the properties variation of the varnish and inks according to vegetable ester, after I reacted vegetable ester using the vegetable fatty acid and ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol. The compared in order of average molecular weight by the GPC method, rheological properties were found by rotational rheometer, and emulsion behavior were compared by high speed emulsification tester.
Printing inks are basically dispersions of solid pigment particles in a vehicle. Pigment flocculation and/or colloidal aggregates created by thixotrope additives form a three- dimensional network in the inks. This structure complicates the flow behaviour of inks. However, if the internal structure is formed under control, the printing process will benefit from it because the ink must satify rheological requirements over a very wide range of shear conditions. The presence of internal structure results in the following prominent non-Newtonian rheological properties: viscoelasticity, yield stress, shear thinning and thixotropy. If the components of printing inks were changed, the rheological characteristics such as viscosity, yield stress, viscoelasticity and tack value were considerably varied. Thus, in this paper, the effects of changing the content of rosin modified phenolic resin on rheological properties of the vehicle will be studied. For that, the rheological properties were found by flow, yield stress, creep and oscillation measurements using Bohlin C-VOR Rotational Rheometer. And Emulsion rheology and its microstructure will be investigated.
