Clinical observations were performed on 373 cases of chest trauma, those were admitted and treated at the Department of surrgery, Korea University Hospital, during the past 15 years period from August 1965 to June 1980. 1. The ratio of male to female patient of chest trauma was 4:1 in male predominence and age from 10 to 50 occupied 87.4 % of the total cases. 2. The most common cause of chest trauma was traffic accident in this series. One hundred and eight one cases (48.5%) were injuried by traffic accident and total cases due to blunt trauma (non-penetrating injury) were 282 cases (75.6%) including the cases with traffic accident, and remaining 91 cases (24.4%) were due to penetrating injury including 73 cases (19.6%) of stab wounds. 3. hemopneumothorax were observed in 49% (182 cases) of the total cases, and etiologic distribution revealed 72% due to non-penetrating trauma and 28% due to penetrating injury. 4. Rib fracture was found in 44.8% of cases. common injuries associated with rib fracture were lung, brain and liver. 5. Most common symptom was chest pain and respiratory difficulty, and common sign associated with chest injury was decreased respiratory sound and subcutaneous sound. 6. conservative non-operative treatment was performed in 281 cases (75.4%) and 92 cases (24.6%) were treated with operative treatment including 33 cases (8.9%) with open thoracotomy. 7. Overall mortality was 5.6% (21 cases) and most common cause of death were due to brain edema, cardiogenic shock, asphyxia.
Clinical observations were performed on 150 cases of chest trauma, those were admitted and treated at the Department of Surgery, Korea University Woosok Hospital, during the past 8 years period from August 1965 to August 1972. 1. The ratio of male to female patient of chest trauma was 3.4:1 in male predominence and age from 20 to 50 occupied 62% of the total cases. 2. The most common cause of chest trauma was traffic accident in this series. Eighty-one cases[54%] were injured by traffic accident and total cases due to blunt trauma [non-penetrating injury] were 113 cases[75.4%]including the cases with traffic accident, and remaining 37 cases[24.6%] were due to penetrating injury including 25[16.6%] cases of stab wounds. 3. Hemopneumothorax were observed in 645/[96 cases] of the total cases, and etiologic distribution revealed 78.1% due to non-penetrating trauma and 20.8% due to penetrating injury. 4. Rib fracture was found in 50% of cases. Common injuries associated with rib fracture were lung, brain and liver. 5. Most common symptom was chest pain and respiratory difficulty, and common sign associated with chest injury was decreased respiratory sound and subcutaneous emphysema. 6. Children's accident is a largely preventable public health problem. Little is known. however, about population-based incident and outcome of pediatric accident. From 1997.9 through 1998,8. admission data from emergency center in I city were collected. 1418 patient from 0 through 13 years of age were selected. All children with unintensional accidental problems were identified through coded sheet which categorizes epidemiologic characteristics. The specific purposes of this study are analysis about the characteristics of pediatric accidents. And it aims to produce the basic data necessary for accident prevention policy development. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The number of male children$(62.6\%)$ were higher than female children$(37.4\%)$ 2. The age group from 1 to 3 years represents the highest proportion$(45.4\%)$ of every accidents except on traffic accident. 3. The highest proportion of accident were as follows occured during the June-August$(34\%)$, Sunday$(22.6\%)$, and 17-21 p.m. $(37.2\%)$ 4. The main causes of accident include general trauma$(70.9\%)$, environmental accident$(l6.8\%)$. and traffic accident$(l2.1\%)$, 5. Preschool age group represents more than half$(65.4\%)$ of traffic accident. 6. environmental injury includes burns $(46.6\%)$, foreign body$(43.6\%)$, exposure to poisonous materials$(6.3\%)$. and bite(3.3) This results could be used to develope prevention programs and assist in accident prevention system development. And also these data substantiate that accident prevention program decrease safety-related injury rate in preschool age group must be concentrated on enhancing access to a system to have a significant effect. Furthermore, it is necessary for accident prevention. So several suggestions are described here: 1. Development of parent's educational program for accident prevention and safety education should be done actively. 2. Home safety surveillance system should be initiated. 3. The initiation of children's accident report system could be contribute the analysis and the reduction of accident.
Current OSH system was analyzed in this paper to explain why high fatal incidents and disasters are continuously repeated for recent years in Korea. It was found that we have Dichotomous Perceptional Misconception of prevention before accident and compensation after accident and there is a significant lack of proper feedback reward system for OSH performance. It was assumed that no reduction of accident rate and fatality rate have not been achieved recently despite of a great effort and increased resource allocations. Some statistics for proving weak punishment were analyzed. In the current system, the will of administrative agency would have been very limited particularly in the legal aspects. The Industrial Safety and Health Act is not suitable to after-injury punishment for employer and/or corporate since it is based on a framework for enforcement of prevention. Based on these analyses, it was concluded that there was a need to consider a special law for Corporate Accountability for Fatal Accidents. Because it is necessary to consider seriously for introduction of a new legal system for after injury punishment to repair the current system where it was found lack of proper feedback system. Also, there was no proper sanction measures for corporate with the current OSH legal system, and the most urgent problem in OSH area is the high fatality rate. it is necessary to consider seriously for introduction of a new legal system for after injury punishment. Also, there is no proper sanction measures for corporate with the current OSH legal system, and the most urgent problem in OSH area is the high fatality rate.
Background: The objective of this study is to identify high-risk groups for industrial accidents by setting up 2003 as the base year and conducting an in-depth analysis of the trends of major industrial accident indexes the index of industrial accident rate, the index of occupational injury rate, the index of occupational illness and disease rate per 10,000 people, and the index of occupational injury fatality rate per 10,000 people for the past 10 years. Methods: This study selected industrial accident victims, who died or received more than 4 days of medical care benefits, due to occupational accidents and diseases occurring at workplaces, subject to the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act, as the study population. Results: According to the trends of four major indexes by workplace characteristics, the whole industry has shown a decreasing tendency in all four major indexes since the base year (2003); as of 2012, the index of industrial accident rate was 67, while the index of occupational injury fatality rate per 10,000 people was 59. Conclusion: The manufacturing industry, age over 50 years and workplaces with more than 50 employees showed a high severity level of occupational accidents. Male workers showed a higher severity level of occupational accidents than female workers. The employment period of < 3 years and newly hired workers with a relatively shorter working period are likely to have more occupational accidents than others. Overall, an industrial accident prevention policy must be established by concentrating all available resources and capacities of these high-risk groups.

The accident statistics use the data from police accident reports and statistics. Although the official accident statistics are useful, they provide very limited information about how accidents occur, the cause of the accident and the injury mechanisms. This limitations could be overcome by carrying out the in-depth accident study and analysing investigations, collecting more detailed information. Meanwhile a net of in-depth investigation teams are operating worldwide, such as NASS (National Accident Sampling System) and CIREN (Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network) in US, OTS (On the spot investigation) in UK. In this study, the database structure and variables of Korea in-depth accidents investigation system would be proposed through considering the database structure of GIDAS (Germany In-Depth Accidents Study). GIDAS is one of the best system on the in-depth accident study system in the world. GIDAS was established in 1999 as a cooperation project between Federal Highway Research Institute of Germany (BASt) and research association on automotive engineering of German Car Industry(FAT). The iGLAD (Initiative for the Global Harmonization of Accident Data) was also considered to introduce into the database variables of Korea in-depth accident study. Current police reports were compared with GIDAS and iGLAD. To collaborate of the Worldwide in-depth accident data, this paper proposed that the database of Korea in-depth accident study would be introduced the structure of GIDAS and the core variables of iGLAD. Harmonization of the structures and core variables of Korea in-depth accident study will be better than the making unique ones. The database structure and core variables of KIDAS(Korea In-Depth Accident Study) introduced of GIDAS and iGLAD.
Although Korea's economic and domestic automobile market through the change of road environment are growth, the traffic accident rate has also increased, and the casualties is at a serious level. For this reason, the government is establishing and promoting policies to open traffic accident data and solve problems. In this paper, describe the method of predicting traffic accidents by eliminating the class imbalance using the traffic accident data and constructing the Hybrid Model. Using the original traffic accident data and the sampled data as learning data which use FP-Growth algorithm it learn patterns associated with traffic accident injury severity. Accordingly, In this paper purpose a method for predicting the severity of a victim of a traffic accident by analyzing the association patterns of two learning data, we can extract the same related patterns, when a decision tree and multinomial logistic regression analysis are performed, a hybrid model is constructed by assigning weights to related attributes.
Objectives The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Sweet Bee Venom herbal acupuncture for patients with acute whiplash injury by Traffic Accident. Methods This clinical study was carried out 25 cases of acute whiplash injury patients which had been treatment in Woosuk oriental hospital from March, 2007 to September, 2007. Sweet bee venom herbal acupuncture(N=15) and normal saline(N=10) injected on the acupoints that were cervical area. I checked the VAS for the pain and ROM(range of motion) of the cervical. these were checked 3 times. one was before treatments, another was after 3 times treatments with sweet bee venom herbal acupuncture and normal saline injection, and the other was after 5 times treatments with sweet bee venom herbal acupuncture and normal saline injection. Results VAS score was significantly improved after 5 times treatments with the sweet bee venom herbal acupuncture compared to normal saline I.M. on the acupoints that was cervical area. There were significant changes in the sweet bee venom herbal acupuncture group with VAS and ROM check. Conclusions This study suggests that sweet bee venom herbal acupuncture can improve symptoms in patients with acute whiplash injury by traffic accident.
Background: Injury is one of the major health problems in South Korea. Few studies have evaluated both intentional and unintentional injury when investigating the association between exposure to air pollutants and injury. Objectives: We aimed to explore the association between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and years of life lost (YLLs) due to injury. Methods: Data on daily YLLs for 2002~2019 were obtained from the the Death Statistics Database of the Korean National Statistical Office. This study estimated short-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <10 ㎛ (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 ㎛ (PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3). This time series study was conducted using a generalized additive model (GAM) assuming a Gaussian distribution. We also evaluated a delayed effect of ambient air pollution by constructing a lag structure up to seven days. The best-fitting lag was selected based on smallest generalized cross validation (GCV) value. To explore effect modification by intentionality of injury (i.e., intentional injury [self-harm, assault] and unintentional injury), we conducted stratified subgroup analyses. Additionally, we stratified unintentional injury by mechanism (traffic accident, fall, etc.). Results: During the study period, the average daily YLLs due to injury was 307.5 years. In the intentional injury, YLLs due to self-harm and assault showed positive association with air pollutants. In the unintentional injury, YLLs due to fall, electric current, fire and poisoning showed positive association with air pollutants, whereas YLLs due to traffic accident, mechanical force and drowning/submersion showed negative associations with air pollutants. Conclusions: Injury is recognized as preventable, and effective strategies to create a safe society are important. Therefore, we need to establish strategies to prevent injury and consider air pollutants in this regard.
A survey was conducted to investigate the power tiller accidents. Eight provinces were covered for this study, and 278 power tiller owners were selected randomly by computer random generator. The results are summarized as follows : A. Frequency of accident. (1) Each power tiller had an accident 0.98 times a year and once every 361 hours of use. Higher frequency of accident was found during the miscellaneous operations including the preparation for farming operation, and there was one accident for every 92 hours of use. (2) The power tiller, which are more than six years old, met an accident 1.19 times a year , or one every 311 hours of use. This value was the highest one compared with any other group. (3) Kerosene engine power tillers met an accident 0.97 times a year, or one every 389 hours of use. It was one tie a year, or once every 329 hours of use for diesel engine power tillers. (4) Among diesel-engine power tillers, 10 horse-power group showed a higher frequency tillers. B. Cause of accident (1) The accidents of power tiller were mainly of sefety , which occurred due to the lack of attention during the operation and 47.4% of the total accidents. The next was of accidental, which represented 26.3% of the total accidents. (2) High percentage of safety accidents occurred during the preparation for farming operation including adjustment. Most of the accidental accidents occurred during the transportation. (3) Lower frequency of accident was found in the power tiller group which were operated by the 21-40 years old operator in comparison with that of the power tiller which was operated by other age group. Power tillers which were operated by high school graduates experienced less accidents compared to other education levels. C. Damage by accident (1) Eighty seven pescents of the total accidents caused damage to the power tiller operator , and 13 % of the total accidents caused property damage only. (2) With regard to the damage to the power tiller operator, 73.8% of the total accidents caused light injury but 26.3% caused heavy injury. (3) Accidents which occurred during machine preparation , and farming operations caused minor injury to the operator, but the accidents during transportation caused heavy injury which cost more than 15 days for recovery. (4) Among the 39 accidents , which caused property damage 18 accidents were from the transportation . Among the total property damage accidents 53.8% were light one which cost only less than 1,000 won. (5) The property damage from each accident cost 1,017 won, on the average, with regard to the kinds of operation, the highest property damage occurred during transportation work, with the value of 2, 965won.
