Microcellular foaming process was developed at MIT in 1980's to save a quantity of raw materials and improve mechanical properties. There are many process variables in appling microcellular foaming process to the conventional injection molding process. Of all process variables, part dimension control and shrinkage are the most influential on the post molded dimension. The post molding dimensional change of thermoplastic resins is important to tool designers for predicting the specific difference of molded part vs. actual mold cavity. Generally, articles injection molded are smaller in size than the cavity; hence, the term shrinkage factor is used to define the allowance a designer specifies. It is important to consider the factors that influence molded part dimension. According to ASTM Designation: D 955, shrinkage from mold dimensions of molded plastics was measured. In injection molding, the difference between the dimensions of the mold and of the molded article produced therein from a given material may vary according to the design and operation of the mold. In this paper, shrinkage data of molded plastic parts was obtained. It can be an important information for designing optimum mold system in a microcellular foaming injection molding process.

Plastic molding designers are frequently faced with optimizing multiple defects in injection molded parts. these defects are usually in conflict with each other, and thus a tradeoff needs to be made reach a final compromised solution. In this study, an automated injection molding design methodology has been developed to optimize multiple defects of injection molded parts. Two features of the proposed methodology are as follows: one is to apply the utility theory to transform the original multiple objective optimization problem into single objective optimization problem with utility as objective function, the other is an implementation of a direct search-based injection molding optimization procedure with automated consideration of process variation. The modified complex method is used as a general optimization tool in this research. The developed methodology was applied to an actual molding design and the results showed that the methodology was useful through the CAE simulation using a commercial injection molding software package. Applied to production, this study will be of immense value to industry in reducing the product development time and enhancing the product quality.
The narrow-pitched connectors are of interest for small-scale devices such as smart phones because of theirs caling. We conducted an injection molding analysis and a warp analysis for 0.3mm and 0.5mm pitch FPC connectors. We obtained a volumetric shrinkage of 4.344%, a clamping force of 0.2529 tonne, a maximum injection pressure of 76.3 MPa as optimized molding conditions for the 0.3mm pitch FPC connector. We found that, compared with the traditional injection molding technique, the injection molding for narrow-pitched connectors comes with distinct features like low clamping force, high injection molding pressure, and narrow gate size. Adding to the optimization analysis, the deflection of 0.5mm pitch FPC connector was analyzed as well. A maximum deflection of 0.053mm was calculated, which the actual deflection of 0.062mm was compared to. The results deduced a relative error of 17%. We conclude that the deflection analysis along with the optimization analysis can be used as an effective tool to predict the behavior of narrow-pitch connectors although the relative error may need to improve.
Injection molding is a very important industrial process for the manufacturing of plastics objects. During an injection molding process of composites, the fiber-matrix separation and fiber orientation are caused by the flow of molten polymer/fiber mixture. As a result, the product tends to be nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. Hence, it is very important to clarify the relations between separation orientation and injection molding conditions. So far, there is no research on the measurement of fiber orientation using image processing. In this study, the effects of fiber content ratio and molding condition on the fiber orientation-angle distributions are studied experimentally. Using the image processing method, the fiber orientation distribution of weld-line parts in injection-molded products is assessed. And the effects of fiber content and injection molding conditions on the fiber orientation functions are also discussed.
The deformation of injection molding is seriously affected by injection molding conditions, such as melt and mold temperature and injection and holding pressure. In these conditions, the mold temperature is controlled by flowing coolant, which can be classified by the Reynolds number in the mold-cooling channel. In this study, the deformation of the automotive side molding according to the variation of the Reynolds number in the coolant was simulated by Moldflow. In the results, as the Reynolds number was increased, the mold cooling was also increased. However, when the Reynolds number exceeded a certain range, the mold cooling was not increased further. In addition to the Moldflow verification, the mold cooling by the coolant was simulated by CFX. The CFX results confirmed that the Reynolds number significantly influenced the mold cooling. The coolant, which has a high Reynolds number value, quickly cooled the mold. However, the coolant, which has a low Reynolds number value, such as 0 points, hardly cooled the mold. In an injection molding experiment, as the Reynolds number was high, the deformation of the moldings was reduced. The declining tendency of the deformation was similar to the Moldflow results.

In this study, molding shrinkage of PPS resin was investigated. Two types of PPS resins with differing glass fiber and calcium carbonate content were used for this purpose. To observe mold shrinkage, molding conditions based on injection temperature, injection speed, and the position of the cushion were selected. Circular and rectangular specimens were used for the study model. Injection molding simulation was performed to predict the filling pattern and mold shrinkage, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental conclusions. It was observed that the mold shrinkage showed the highest shrinkage (distributed from 0.05% to 0.32%) dependence on the injection temperature, and the lowest shrinkage (distributed from 0.05% to 0.31%) dependence on the injection speed. The role of the position of the cushion in mold shrinkage was difficult to observe. The results of the simulation mostly agreed with the experimental results; however, for some molding conditions, the mold shrinkage in the simulation was overestimated as compared to that in the experiment.
Traditional cell culture(2-dimensional) is the method that provide a nutrient and environment on a flat surface to cultivate cells into a single layer. Since the cell characteristics of 2D culture method is different from the characteristics of the cells cultured in the body, attempts to cultivate the cells in an environment similar to the body environment are actively proceeding in the industry, academy, and research institutes. In this study, we will develop a technology to fabricate micro-structures capable of culturing cells on surfaces with various curvatures, surface shapes, and characteristics. In order to fabricate the hemispheric plastic structure(thickness $50{\mu}m$), plastic preform mold (hereinafter as "preform mold") corresponding to the hemisphere was first prepared by injection molding in order to fabricate a two - layer structure to be combined with a flat plastic film. Then, thermoplastic polymer dissolved in an organic solvent was solidified on a preform mold. As a preliminary study, we proposed injection molding conditions that can minimize X/Y/Z axis deflection value. The effects of the following conditions on the preform mold were analyzed through injection molding CAE, [(1) coolant inlet temperature, (2) injection time, (3) packing pressure, (4) volume-pressure (V/P). As a result, the injection molding process conditions (cooling water inlet temperature, injection time, holding pressure condition (V / P conversion point and holding pressure size)) which can minimize the deformation amount of the preform mold were derived through CAE without applying the experimental design method. Also, the derived injection molding process conditions were applied during actual injection molding and the degree of deformation of the formed preform mold was compared with the analysis results. It is expected that plastic film having various shapes in addition to hemispherical shape using the preform mold produced through this study will be useful for the molding preform molding technology and cast molding technology.
Magnesium alloys are very attractive materials for appling to the development of autemobile parts or electric goods where light weight and higher stiffness. Due to higher ratio of strength vs. weight and stillness vs. weight, various magnesium alloys are well applied in much weight saving design applications though extrusion or die-casting process. However for the requisites of higher strength and weight savings, some new fabrication processes has been and it can be realized though the aid of injection modeling technology. To obtain the parametric data base for the injection molding process, various experiments were executed for AZ91D magnesium alloy. This paper propose the optimum condition of injection temperature, first and second pressure. the process was lined-up successfully often changing the injection unit. fluid pressure system from the conventional plastic injection molding process.
