A Fortran program was developed to determine the optimal locations of an artificial recharge well. Three objective functions were considered: (1) maximizing the recovery rates, (2) maximizing the injection rates, and (3) minimizing the coefficient of variation of the increased pumping rates. We also suggested a new aggregate objective function which combined the first and the third objective functions. The model results showed that locating the injection well inside the cluster of pumping wells was desirable if either the recovery or the injection rate was taken into account. However, the injection well located outside the cluster evenly increased the pumping rates in existing pumping wells. Therefore, for clustered pumping wells, installing an injection well at the center or the upstream of the pumping wells seems beneficial. For linear arrangement of pumping wells parallel to the constant head boundary, locating the injection well in the upstream was recommended. On the contrary, in case of the linear arrangement perpendicular to the constant head boundary, the injection well installed on both sides of the central part of the pumping wells was preferable.

Analytical solutions have been derived to delineate the capture zone created by pumping wells for the remediation design of contaminated groundwater. These previous analytical solutions are often restricted to pumping wells only, specific well locations, a limited number of wells, and an isotropic aquifer. Analytical solution was developed to deal with arbitrarily located multi injection-pumping wells in an anisotropic homogeneous aquifer. The solution presented in this study provides a simple, easy method for determining tile complex flow field caused by multi injection-pumping wells at different rates, and will consequently be useful in pump-and-treat design.
Freshwater may be injected into aquifers to combat sea water intrusion in groundwater or to store water for later retrieval. For these cases to achieve the desired goal groundwater modeling is commonly used to determine locations and rates of injection wells. When these wells are connected to a pipe network, a flow control valve is installed for each well to regulate the injection rate. When a valve opening is modified, pressure changes in the entire pipe network and thereby changes flow rates in other wells. Therefore, desired valve openings must be determined for all injection wells. The pipe flow analysis allows estimation of the minimum pump power in addition to valve openings. Methods are developed to identify valve openings for multiple wells and the minimum pump power. The methodology developed in this work can contribute to precise operation of multiple injection wells.
A FORTRAN program was developed to determine the optimal locations of multiple recharge wells in an aquifer with different arrangements of pumping wells. The simulated annealing algorithm was used to find optimal locations of two recharge wells which satisfied three objective functions. The model results show that locating two injection wells inside the cluster of pumping wells is efficient if the recovery rate only was taken into account. In contrast, placing injection wells to the side of the cluster is desirable if the simulation considers aggregate objective function. Therefore, installing an injection well on each side of the cluster seems to yield the maximum recovery rates for the existing pumping wells, and it yields similar increases in pumping rate for all wells in the cluster. The locations of recharge wells can be arranged in numerous configurations, because there are multiple near-optimal local minima or maxima. These results indicate that the simulated annealing can yield effective evaluations of the optimal locations of multiple recharge wells. In addition, the suggested aggregate objective function can be utilized as an appropriate multi-objective optimization.
In this study, the behavior of fresh water body between the injection and production wells with the fresh water injection rate in a saline aquifer is numerically analyzed by using a three-dimensional numerical model. 8 injection wells are arranged at equidistant intervals on a concentric circle and one production well is located at the center of this circle. In the case that the fresh water injection rate is relatively small, the fresh water body around a injection well screen is not mixed with neighboring ones and is independently distributed. However, when the injection rate is increased, the size of the fresh water body is continuously increased, and the areas, where saline and fresh water among injection wells are mixed, are appeared. The mixed degree is increased as the injection rate is increased. This phenomenon is identically generated around the production well. Moreover, when the injection rate is increased, the ratio of saline water in and around the production well is decreased.
It is expected that use of groundwater wells for contaminated groundwater remediation, artificial groundwater recharge and geothermal heat pump systems is increasing in the future in Korea. Some practical confusions may be produced due to lack of regulations related to permits and registrations of these types of wells. This short note is intended to draw attention of relevant professionals by shortly introducing some relevant code of state regulations in Missouri, USA.
Most wells developed in Jeju island before the enactment of the Groundwater Management Ordinance in 2002 are vulnerable to aquifer contamination due to inflow of upper groundwater having the high concentration of nitrate nitrogen, likely due to incomplete grouting in upper section of the wells. Although these wells require entire reinstallation, it is often necessary to rehabilitate the existing wells due to various constraints. Therefore, to identified the inflow section of contaminants, the thermal level sensor (TLS) technique was firstly applied for three wells, which enables to monitor temperature variations in every 50 cm depth. Then, the grouting material was injected to the upper section to prevent the inflow of upper contaminated groundwater into the entire aquifer. By applying TLS technique, it was found that the temperature deviations in the upper groundwater inflow section decreased sharply. Moreover, both the change in the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in the rainy/dry seasons and the average concentrations were found to decrease rapidly after grouting material injection. Consequently, the application of TLS proposed in the study turned out to be appropriate to prevent aquifer contamination.
A simulation-optimization model is developed for development of groundwater and control of a saltwater wedge for protecting over-exploiting freshwater pumping wells. To achieve the goal an objective function is developed for three types of wells: freshwater pumping, freshwater injection and saltwater pumping. Integrity of groundwater environment is accounted for by including three indices. Illustrative cross-sectional examples show that both types of barriers can protect freshwater pumping wells from saltwater intrusion. A barrier well operating at the same rate located anywhere within a certain reach can protect a pumping well. However, the location of the reach appears to contradict the common practice of barrier placements. Consideration of the groundwater environment yields a unique optimal location for barrier wells.
This study was performed to identify the optimal operating conditions and to evaluate the xylene removal efficiency, applying in-situ soil flushing with the low concentrated solution of 'Tween 80' at the xylene contaminated site. The pilot scale test site ($5m{\times}5m{\times}3m$), was mainly composed of 'sandy loam', with the average hydraulic conductivity of $9.1{\times}10^{-4}cm\;s^{-1}$. The average xylene concentration of the site was 42.1 mg $kg^{-1}$, which was more than 2.5 times higher than Korea soil pollution warning limit (15 mg $kg^{-1}$). For the soil flushing, 7,800 L of 0.1~0.2% surfactant solution was injected into three injection wells at the average injection time of 9 hr $d^{-1}$ for 10 days, followed by the additional only groundwater injection of 6,000 L. The same amount of the effluent solution was extracted from three extraction wells. From the analysis for xylene concentration of all effluent at 3 extraction wells, total 166 g of xylene was removed by in-situ surfactant flushing. Even though the residual xylene concentrations of 7 soil sampling locations in the test site were different due to the soil heterogeneity, from the comparison of xylene concentration at 7 locations before/after the feasibility test, 53.9% of the initial xylene in the site was removed from three extraction wells (mainly Ext-N and Ext-M well). The results showed that the in-situ soil flushing by using low concentrated 'Tween 80' solution had a great potential to remediate the xylene contaminated site.
Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) system can be very cost-effective and renewable energy sources, depending on site-specific parameters and load characteristics. In order to develop an ATES system which has certain hydrogeological characteristics, understanding of the thermo hydraulic processes of an aquifer is necessary for a proper design of an aquifer heat storage system under given conditions. The thermo hydraulic transfer for heat storage is simulated using FEFLOW according to two sets of pumping and waste water reinjection scenarios of heat pump operation in a two layered confined aquifer. In the first set of model, the movement of the thermal front and groundwater level are simulated by changing the locations of injection and pumping well in seasonal cycle. However, in the second set of model the simulation is performed in the state of fixing the locations of pumping and injection well. After 365 days simulation period, the temperature distribution is dominated by injected water temperature and the distance from injection well. The small temperature change is appears on the surface compared to other slices of depth because the first layer has very low porosity and the transfer of thermal energy are sensitive at the porosity of each layer. The groundwater levels and temperature changes in injection and pumping wells are monitored to validate the effectiveness of the used heat pump operation method and the thermal interference between wells is analyzed.
