  • This study is to inspect the influence of the initial residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior after the distribution of the initial residual stress is measured when the crack is growing from the compressive residual stress field. Also, the tensile residual stress field. Also, the influence of the variation of residual stress distribution on fatigue crack growth behavior at the crack tip is studied when the initial crack occurs on weld metal, bead interface and HAZ (Heat Affected Zone), respectively. For this purpose, CT-type specimen that crack parallel to the welding bead were manufactured by butt welding on the Al. Alloy 1100-O plate.

  • The damping hinge of a built-in refrigerator was examined in terms of its stress and fatigue life. Analysis of the initial design showed that stress concentration occurred at the concave surface of the hinge lever, which was broken during the door opening-and-closing endurance test of the prototype. The maximum von Mises stress at this location exceeded the yield strength. In addition, Goodman fatigue analysis of the initial design showed that the fatigue life at this location was consistent with the failure observed during the endurance test. Based on these results, an improved design for the damping hinge was derived. Analysis of this improved design showed that the stress concentration in the hinge lever of the initial design was eliminated. In this case, the maximum stress occurred at the position where the hinge lever was in contact with the door stopping pin, and the maximum von Mises stress was smaller than the yield strength. Goodman fatigue analysis of the improved design indicated that the fatigue life of the entire damping hinge was infinite. It was therefore concluded that the improved design does not suffer from fatigue damage during the endurance test.

  • Damage often occurs on the surface of railway wheels due to wheel-rail contact fatigue. It should be removed before reaching wheel failure, because wheel failure can cause derailment with loss of life and property. The increase or decrease of the contact fatigue lift by the metal removal of the contact surface were investigated by many researchers, but they have not considered initial residual stress and traction force. The railway wheel has the initial residual stress formed during the manufacturing process, and the residual stress is changed by thermal stress induced by braking. The traction force and residual stress are operated on wheels of locomotive and electric motor vehicle. In this study, the effect of metal removal depth on the contact fatigue life for a railway wheel has been evaluated by applying lolling contact fatigue test. The effect of the traction force and metal removal on the contact fatigue life has been estimated by finite element analysis. It has been found that the initial residual stress determines the amount of metal removal depth if the traction coefficient is less than 0.15. If the traction coefficient is greater than 0.2, however, the amount of metal removal depth is independent on the intial residual stress.

To reduce the effort in preprocessing of finite element analysis, we developed two types of three-dimensional finite element models based on the standard teeth model. Individual malocclusions were incorporated in the finite element models by considering the measuring factors such as angulation, crown inclination, rotation and translations. The finite element analysis for the wire activation with a T-loop arch wire was carried out. Mechanical behavior on the movement and the initial stress for the malocclusion finite element model was shown to agree with the objectives of the actual treatment. Finite element models and procedures of analysis developed in this study would be suitably utilized for the design of initial shape of the wire and determination of activation displacements.

  • In order to consider the concept of the fitness for purpose'in fatigue design of offshore structure, fracture mechanics is applied to evaluate initial or weld defects. Generally, linear elastic fracture mechanics has been applied to tstimate initial fatigue crack propagation rate as well as long fatigue crack propagation rate. But, initial fatigue crack propagation rate in elasto-plastic notch field may not be characterized by application of stress intensity factor range .DELTA. K, because plastic effect due to stress concentration of notch may contribute to initial crack propagation. Therefore, to introduce the plastic effect into fatigue crack driving force, in this studty, the evaluating method of J-integral range .DELTA. J, was developed by willson was modified for application to notch field. In calculation of .DELTA. J obtained from the modified J-integral, stress gradient and crack closure behavior in the notch field were considered. The initial crack propagation rates in the notch fields of mild steels and high tensile strength steels were correlated to .DELTA. J. As the result, it was cleared that the present .DELTA. J is applicable to charachterize the fatigue crack propagation rates in both the elastic and elasto-plastic notch fields.

  • In this paper, thermal effect on the vibration and stability of initially stressed sandwich plates with functionally graded material (FGM) face sheets is analyzed. Material properties of FGM face sheet are graded continuously in the thickness direction. The variation of FGM properties assumes a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations of arbitrarily initially-stressed sandwich plates including the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia are derived. The initial stress is taken to be a combination of a uniaxial extensional stress and a pure bending stress in the examples. The eigenvalue problems are formed to study the vibration and buckling characteristics of simple supported initially stressed FGM/metal/FGM plates. The effects of volume fraction index, temperature rise, initial stress and layer thickness of metal on the natural frequencies and buckling loads are investigated. The results reveal that the volume fraction index, initial stresses and layer thickness of metal have significant influence on the vibration and stability of sandwich plates with FGM face sheets.

  • The initial strain, the applied stress exponent, the activation energy, and rupture time in AZ31 magnesium alloy have been measured in order to predict the deformation mechanism and rupture life of creep over the temperature range of 423-443K. Creep tests were carried out under constant applied stress and temperature, and the lever type tester and automatic temperature controller was used for it, respectively. The experimental results showed that the applied stress exponent was about 9.74, and the activation energy for creep, 113.6KJ/mol was less than that of the self diffusion of Mg alloy including aluminum. From the results, the mechanism for creep deformation seems to be controlled by cross slip at the temperature range of 423-443K. Also the higher the applied stress and temperature, the higher the initial strain. And the rupture time for creep decreased as quadratic function with increasing the initial strain in double logarithmic axis.

  • Agricultural materials do not react in a purely elastic manner, and their responses when subjected to stress and strain are appeared from a combination of elastic and viscous behavior. Various researchers have studied the mechanical and rheological properties of the many agricultural materials, but those properties are available mostly foreign varieties of agricultural products. Rheological properties of rice seedlings become important to formulate the principles governing their mechanical behavior. The objectives of this study were to experimentally determine the stress relaxation properties of rice seedlings such as three Japonica-type and one Indica ${\times}$ Japonica hybrid in the transplanting age. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The stress relaxation behavior could be described by the generalized Maxwell model. 2. The phenomenon of stress relaxation happened abruptly just after loading and this phenomenon weakened with the loading time lapsed. 3. With increase of the initial stress, the stress relaxation intensity and residual stress increased, while the relaxation time was constant with increased, while the relaxation time was constant with increase of the level of initial stress. 4. With increase of loading rate, the stress relaxation intensity increased, while the relaxation time and residual stress decreased.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of initial clamping force of tension clamp on the performance of an elastic rail fastening system used in sharp curve track. In this study, the initial clamping force and the increasing lateral wheel loads were conducted in the analytical and experimental study, i.e., finite element analysis, laboratory and field test. Using the analytical and experimental results, the performance of the tension clamp was investigated. It was found that the stress of tension clamp depends on the initial clamping force. Therefore the initial clamping force appeared to directly affect the compression stress of the tension clamp. It was found that the compression stress of tension clamp was transferred to the tensile stress by applied the lateral wheel load in service sharp curve track. Further, it was concluded that the initial clamping force was applied on the strengthening force for the tension clamp and then the appropriate initial clamping force was important to ensure a stable performance and long term endurance of tension clamp.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the longitudinal mediation effects of maternal parenting stress and psychosocial development of infant on the influence of paternal involvement during infancy to children's peer interactions. For these objectives, latent growth modeling was used and adapted to the data taken from the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC), Wave I (0-year olds) to Wave III (2-year olds) and Wave V(4-year olds) to Wave VII(6-year olds). During a total of six years, 1,018 parent responded. The major results of this study were as follows. First, maternal parenting stress(initial status) had a significant mediating effect on the influence of paternal involvement(initial status) to children's play interaction(initial status). Second, maternal parenting stress(initial status/change rate) had a longitudinal mediating eff ect on the influence of paternal involvements(initial status/change rate) to children's play disruption-disconnection interactions(initial status/change rate). Third, psychosocial development of infants(initial status/change rate) had a longitudinal mediating effect on the influence of paternal involvement(initial status/change rate) to children's play interactions(initial status/change rate). Fourth, psychosocial development of infant(initial status) had a significant mediating effect on the influence of paternal involvement(initial status) to children's play disruption-disconnection interactions(initial status). The implications of the findings of the current study and suggestions for future research were also discussed.
