  • During the cooling process of rail, residual stresses are produced due to the difference of the coefficients of thermal expansion between rail and inhomogeneous non-metallic inclusions such as sulphides and oxides. A micro-mechanical approach is used to obtain the stresses in the inclusions and matrix, After obtaining the stress of an elliptical inhomogeneous inclusion in an infinite domain, average stresses of randomly distributed spherical inclusions are obtained by use of Mori-Tanaka's self consistent method. The magnitude of the calculated residual stress is near to the yield stress of the matrix in case of the spherical inclusions.

  • The Faddeev-type equations for systems of more than four particles are derived from Weinberg's equation. The derivation is considerably simpler than that by others. The Faddeev-type equations thus derived can be expressed in a matrix form and the rules for constructing the inhomogeneous term and the matrix kernel of the matrix integral equation are formulated and verified explicitly for N=3, 4, and 5.

  • A method of the shape design sensitivity analysis based on the boundary integral equation formulation is presented for two-dimensional inhomogeneous thermal conducting solids with multiple domains. Shape variation of the external and interface boundary is considered. A sensitivity formula of a general performance functional is derived by taking the material derivative to the boundary integral identity and by introducing an adjoint system. In numerical analysis, state variables of the primal and adjoint systems are solved by the boundary element method using quadratic elements. Two numerical examples of a compound cylinder and a thermal diffuser are taken to show implementation of the shape design sensitivity analysis. Accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing analyzed sensitivities with those by the finite difference. As application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of the thermal diffuser is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimization program.

  • Abnormal grain growth in alumina was investigated during sinter-HIP process for better understanding of pressure effect on microstructural development. Abnormal grain growth of monolithic alumina was observed near surface region rather than interior region of specimen. Finite element analysis was used to estimate the pressure distribution developed in the specimen. Pressure distribution analysis was in good agreement with grain size distributjion in the specimen. The results of finite element analysis provided that abnormal grain growth monolithic alumina was resulted from the inhomogeneous pressure distribution in the specimen. MgO addition in alumina was effective for the suppression of abnormal grain growth in alumina under inhomogeneous pressure distribution during sinter-HIP process.

  • This paper deals with the dielectric behaviors of $SF_{6}$ gas and prebreakdown growth caused by lightning impulse voltages in inhomogeneous field perturbed with a fixed needle-shaped protrusion on the electrode. The measuring interpretation of the external current induced by moving charges is described. The temporal growth of prebreakdown is obserbed by using a shunt and photomultiplier. The prebreakdown processes are initiated by the first streamer corona at a needle protrustion, the flashover of the main gap in the positive polarity is very sensitive to the local field and propagates into the gap with the leader mechanism. It is found that the dependence of the prebreakdown phenomena on the polarity of applied voltages is caused by the effect of space charges. In addition, the proposed measuring techniques are very useful to perform the measurements of avalanche currents, corona discharges in inhomogeneous fields ad partial discharges in voids.

  • This paper presents prebreakdown characteristics of $SF_6$ gas stressed by the non-oscillating and oscillating impulse voltages in inhomogeneous fields disturbed by metallic protrusion. The purpose of this investigation is to present the predischarge development and dielectric characteristics of $SF_6$ gas under VFTOs. The experiments were carried out using a needle-to-plane gap geometries in the gas pressure ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 MPa. The gap separation was22 mm, and the needle-shaped protrusions were made of stainless steel 10 mm in length and 1.0 mm in diameter. As a result, it was found that the breakdown mechanism and predischarge current are principally dependent on applied voltage waveform and polarity.

  • The acoustic optimization of a swirl coaxial jet injector mounted upstream a combustion chamber is investigated to tackle combustion instabilities. The least damped modes are extracted with the help of the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD). The sensitivity of the heat release perturbation to the velocity perturbation for the second longitudinal mode is investigated by combining the Crocco's equation and the inhomogeneous wave equation and computing the flame transfer function (FTF). DMD and FTF results agree in terms of the optimized injector length.

  • The effect of the out-of-plane retardation (Rth) of a substrate film on the viewing-angle dependence of transmittance (TR) in a display device was investigated. When the polarization state of input light deviates from the transmission axis of the polarizer, Rth of the substrate film induces inhomogeneous viewing-angle dependence of TR. The inhomogeneity of TR gets worse for greater values of of Rth. The inhomogeneous TR profile can be eliminated by inserting compensation films, which convert the input polarization state to the linear polarization state parallel to the transmission axis of the polarizer.

  • The main purpose of the present paper is to study the asymptotic behavior near the origin of radial solutions of the equation 𝚫p u(x) + uq(x) + f(x) = 0 in ℝN\{0}, where p > 2, q > 1, N ≥ 1 and f is a continuous radial function on ℝN\{0}. The study depends strongly of the sign of the function f and the asymptotic behavior near the origin of the function |x|λf(|x|) with suitable conditions on λ > 0.

  • In the current study, the nonlinear impact of the Von-Kármán theory on the vibrational response of nonhomogeneous structures of functionally graded (FG) nano-scale tubes is investigated according to the nonlocal theory of strain gradient theory as well as high-order Reddy beam theory. The inhomogeneous distributions of temperature-dependent material consist of ceramic and metal phases in the radial direction of the tube structure, in which the thermal stresses are applied due to the temperature change in the thickness of the pipe structure. The general motion equations are derived based on the Hamilton principle, and eventually, the acquired equations are solved and modeled by the Meshless approach as well as a computer simulation via intelligent mathematical methodology. The attained results are helpful to dissect the stability of the MEMS and NEMS.
