Brining Property and Antimutagenic Effects of Organic Chinese Cabbage Kimchi

  • Brining property and antimutagenic effects of organically cultivaged Chinese cabbage kimchi (OC kimchi) and common Chinese cabbage imchi (CC kimchi) were studied. The salt absorption rate of leaves was faster than that of stems of the Chinese cabbages. Due to the large portion of leaf in organic Chinese cabbage, organic Chinese cabbage(OC) was much faster in terms of salt absorption rate than common Chinese cabbage(CC). The antimutagenic effects of methanol extracts of CC kimchi and OC kimchi were studied against aflatoxin B1(AFB1) using Ames test on Samonella typhimurium TA 100 and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) using SOS chromotest. Methanol extract from 6 -day fermented OC kimchi at 15 $^{\circ}C$ showed 80% inhibition rate against the indirect mutage, aflatoxin B1 induced mutagenicit where as that from 6-day fermented CC kimchi at 15 $^{\circ}C$ showed 54% inhibition rate in the Ames test. Methanol extracts from 6-day fermented CC kimchi and OC kimchi showed 27 % and 58 % inhibition rate against direct mutagen , N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine induced mutagenicity, respectively in SOS chormotest, thus OC kimchi exhibited higher antimutagenic activity than kimchi.

The Initial Effect of Deltoid Inhibition Taping on Shoulder Pain, Function, Strength Level and Range of Motion in Patients With Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (견관절 충돌증후군 환자에 대한 삼각근 억제 테이핑이 견부 통증과 기능수행 수준, 근력, 관절가동범위에 미치는 즉각적 영향)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the initial effects of deltoid inhibition taping to Pain, Function, Strength, ROM in shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). Methods : This study is 28 patients(male 16, female 12) with shoulder impingement syndrome(SIS).The experimental group received deltoid inhibition taping and the control group had sham taping. Outcome variables measured degree of pain, disability, strength, and range of motion at pre-post intervention. The changes between pre-post interventions are analyzed by a repeated measure ANOVA test. Results : Pain and disability index significantly decreased (p<.05), and the rate of change in pain and disability level of the experimental group increased significantly more than control group (p<.05). Strength and range of motion significantly increased (p<.05), but the rate of change of the two groups showed no significant difference (p>.05). Conclusion : These results suggest that deltoid inhibition taping was initial effective in decreasing pain and disability in SIS patients.

Study on the Control of Biofilm Formation Inhibition on Pantoea agglomerans by Anti-bacterial Effect of Indole (인돌의 항균 효과에 의한 Pantoea agglomerans의 바이오필름 생성 억제 조절에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of indole on biofilm formation inhibition in Pantoea agglomerans (P. agglomerans). In the biofilm growth assay, indole inhibited biofilm formation across all the growth time. Depending on biofilm growth stage, indole exhibited biofilm inhibition and anti-bacterial effects on planktonic cells. Through the analysis of the proportion rate between biofilm and Colony Forming Units (CFU) and inhibition rate of indole, we confirmed that depending on the biofilm stage of P. agglomerans, indole treatment timing was more important than the treatment duration. By comparing gene expression rates through rt-qPCR P.agglomerans affected by indole was found to significantly change quorum sensing (pagI/R) and indole transportation (bssS) gene expressions. Throughout all, indole exhibited both antimicrobial and anti-biofilm effects on P. agglomerans. In addition, we confirmed the anti-biofilm effects of indole on mature biofilm. In conclusion, indole as a signal molecule, can exhibit anti-biofilm effects through bacterial quorum sensing inhibition and indole affects. Therefore, indole can regulate biofilm bacteria especially gram-negative opportunistic pathogens.

Antiulcerogenic and Anticancer Activities of Korean Red Ginseng Extracts Bio-transformed by Paecilomyces tenuipes

  • In the present study, red ginseng extracts were fermented by Paecilomyces tenuipes and the protopanaxdiol-type ginsenosides in the extracts were bio-transformed to F2, Rg3, Rg5, Rk1, Rh2, and CK determined by a high-pressure liquid chromatography analysis. It indicates that P. tenuipes is a microorganism to biotransform protopanaxdiol-type ginsenosides to their less glucosidic metabolites. Other biotransformed metabolites during fermentation were also analyzed using a GC-MS and identified as 2-methyl-benzaldehyde, 4-vinyl-2-methylphenol, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. Antiulcerogenic activity of the fermented red ginseng extract (FRGE) on gastric mucosal damage induced by 0.15 M HCl in ethanol in rats was evaluated. FRGE was shown to have a potent protective effect on gastritis with 60.5% of inhibition rate at the dose of 40 mg/kg when compared to 54.5% of the inhibition rate at the same dose for stillen, the currently used medicine for treating gastritis. Linoleic acid showed a strong inhibition on gastritis with 79.3% of inhibition rate at the dose of 40.0 mg/kg. FRGE exhibited a distinct anticancer activity including growth inhibition of the two human colon cancer cells HT29 and HCT116. HT29 cells were less susceptible to FRGE in comparison with HCT116 cells. Taken together, fungal fermentation of the red ginseng extract induced hydrolysis of some ginsenosides and FRGE exhibited potent antiulcerogenic and anticancer activities. These results refer to use FRGE as a new source for treating human diseases.

Some Probiotic Properties of Some Lactic Acid Bacteria and Yeasts Isolated from Jeot-gal. (젓갈 프로바이오틱 생균의 내산성 및 내담즙 특성)

  • In order to select probiotics with a high survival rate in gut and the growth inhibition of virulent pathogens to human beings or animals, we have screened lactic acid bacteria and yeasts from Jeot-gal to assess resistance against the artificial gastric acid and bile juice. Lactic acid bacteria and yeasts isolated were incubated for 24 h in artificial bile juice after incubation for 2 h in artificial gastric acid. Especially, strain HW 161 and strain NK 181 showed the higher survival for 2 h incubation in artificial gastric acid. All of 3 strains of lactic acid bacteria and 2 strains of yeast were showed higher growth rate than the control in artificial bile. The antimicrobial activity of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts was also investigated to prove efficacy as probiotic organisms. Lactic acid bacteria were shown the inhibition of Gram positive and negative bacteria, but yeasts narrow inhibition.

Rebound excitability mediates motor abnormalities in Parkinson's disease

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating disorder resulting from loss of dopamine neurons. In dopamine deficient state, the basal ganglia increases inhibitory synaptic outputs to the thalamus. This increased inhibition by the basal ganglia output is known to reduce firing rate of thalamic neurons that relay motor signals to the motor cortex. This 'rate model' suggests that the reduced excitability of thalamic neurons is the key for inducing motor abnormalities in PD patients. We reveal that in response to inhibition, thalamic neurons generate rebound firing at the end of inhibition. This rebound firing increases motor cortical activity and induces muscular responses that triggers Parkinsonian motor dysfunction. Genetic and optogenetic intervention of the rebound firing prevent motor dysfunction in a mouse model of PD. Our results suggest that inhibitory synaptic mechanism mediates motor dysfunction by generating rebound excitability in the thalamocortical pathway.

Corrosion Inhibition Properties of Conifer Cone (Pinus resinosa) Extract in Chloride Contaminated Concrete Pore Solutions (염화물에 노출된 콘크리트 기공 내에 솔방울 추출물의 부식 방청 특성)

  • The corrosion inhibition properties of conifer cone (Pinus resinosa) extract were studied in synthetic concrete pore solutions (SCPS) with and without chloride environments by electrochemical methods. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that the conifer cone (CC) extract showed promising inhibition behavior by diminishing the corrosion rate of steel rebar both solutions i.e. with and without chloride. The extract of conifer cone hinders the corrosion reaction between steel rebar and aggressive ions. Further, it can be verified that the up to 1000mg.L-1 of CC extract can able to reduce the corrosion rate of steel rebar in chloride contaminated concrete.

Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of Platycodon grandiflorum extracts (도라지 추출물의 항균작용 및 항염작용)

  • This study investigated the impact on S. mutans와 C. albicans in order to reveal the antimicrobial activity of Platycodon grandiflorum extracts. In addition, it examined NO generation inhibition rate in accordance with the extract concentration from Raw 264.7 cell in order to find out anti-inflammatory activation. As for the study materials, domestically made 100% Platycodon grandiflorum powder was utilized. As for the experimental strain, S. mutans KCTC 3065 and C. albicalns KCTC 7965 were utilized. Consequently, this study obtained the following results. Growth inhibition rate of S. mutans became significantly higher with higher concentration of Platycodon grandiflorum extracts. Growth inhibition rate of C. albicans became significantly higher with higher concentration of Platycodon grandiflorum extracts. NO generation inhibition rate was found to be 29.2% and 26.1% respectively when adding Platycodon grandiflorum extract with the concentration of 10 and $20{\mu}g/ml$ in Raw 264.7 cells. These results mean that Platycodon grandiflorum could be leveraged as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory substance.

  • It has been reported that the inhibition effect of pH on activated sludge follows noncompetitive inhibition kinetics. However. the noncompetitive inhibition kinetic equation can not be directly applied to pH inhibition because of the difficulty in quantification of pH in terms of inhibitor concentration. So, many empirical equations have been developed to describe the pH inhibition effect especially for acidic condition. In this research. the pseudo toxic concentration ($C_{PT}$) concept model to quantify pH inhibition effect on activated sludge was proposed and compared to other existing models. The $C_{PT}$ concept model can explain the reduction of the maximum specific growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) caused by the pH inhibition more accurately than any other models, at a wide range of pH. The only model parameter. $K_I$ can be easily estimated by Lineweaver-Burk linearization method.

Effect of organic concentration on its degradation kinetics in a burial site (매몰지 내 유기물 농도가 분해 속도에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of organic substance on its degradation rate in burial site was investigated using batch tests. Substrate were swine and cattle with the initial concentrations of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 g VS(volatile solids)/L, respectively. The highest methane production rates of swine and cattle were found at 2 g VS/L as 46.3 and 48.4 ml CH4/g VS.d, respectively. As substrate concentration increased, the methane production rate decreased. The inhibition constants were n and m that were estimated using nonlinear inhibition model. The values of n and m were inhibition constants of methane production rate and ultimate methane yield, respectively. The values of n and m were 4.9 and 0.6 on swine and 1.1 and 0.4 on cattle. The methane production rate was responded sensitively by increase and decrease of substrate concentration, whereas ultimate methane yield do not relatively. From a relation between n and m, inhibitory effect of substrate concentration was confirmed as uncompetitive inhibition.
