  • The eastern coast of northeastern Brazil (NEB), a coastal land-strip up to 300 km wide and stretching out from Rio Grande do Norte $(5^{\circ}S)$ State down to the south of Bahia State $(17^{\circ}S)$, experiences different rain producing systems, such as distrubances in the south-east trade winds, frontal systems penetration, land-sea breeze circulation and local convection associated with the topography and moisture flux convergence. The annual total rainfall ranges from 600 inland to 3000 mm on the coast. Rainfall totals 5 to 12 times the focal climatic means were recorded in various regions of Alagoas state in January 2004. It was estimated that 46,000 people were homeless, with material damages exceeding US$10 million as a consequence of the ensuing floods. GOES infrared images analysis showed that the main weather system responsible for this anomalously high rainfall totals was an Upper Troposphere Cyclonic Vortex (UTCV), which formed at about a $27^{\underline{\circ}}W\;e\;12^{\underline{\circ}}S$ and remained active for the entire month of January over NEB.

  • A depth image-based rendering (DIBR) technique is one of the rendering processes of virtual views with a color image and the corresponding depth map. The most important issue of DIBR is that the virtual view has no information at newly exposed areas, so called dis-occlusion. In this paper, we propose an intermediate view generation algorithm using the Kinect depth camera that utilizes the infrared structured light. After we capture a color image and its corresponding depth map, we pre-process the depth map. The pre-processed depth map is warped to the virtual viewpoint and filtered by median filtering to reduce the truncation error. Then, the color image is back-projected to the virtual viewpoint using the warped depth map. In order to fill out the remaining holes caused by dis-occlusion, we perform a background-based image in-painting operation. Finally, we obtain the synthesized image without any dis-occlusion. From experimental results, we have shown that the proposed algorithm generated very natural images in real-time.

  • A numerical simulation of a heavy snowfall event that occurred 13 January 2008 along the Yeongdong coastal area, was performed using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) in order to reveal mesoscale structures and to construct a conceptual model showing the meteorological background that caused the large difference in snowfall amounts between the Yeongdong mountain area and the Yeongdong coastal area. The simulation results matched well with various observations such as corresponding 12h-accumulated observed precipitation, surface wind obscrvation, radar echoes, and satellite infrared images. The simulation and the observations showed that the scale of the event was of meso - $\beta$ and meso - $\gamma$ scale. The simulation represented well the mesoscale process causing the large difference in snowfall amounts in the two areas. First, wind flow was kept, to a certain extent, from crossing the mountains due to the blocking effect of the low Froude number (~1). The northeast flow over the adjaccnt sea tumcd northwest as it approachcd the mountains, where it was trapped, allowing so-called cold air damming. Second, a strong convergence area formed where the cold northwest flow along the Yeongdong coastal area and the relatively warm and moist northeast flow advecting toward the coast met, supporting the fonllation of a coastal front. Thus, the vertical motion was strongest over the front located near the coast, leading to the heavy snowfall there rather than in the remote mountain area.

  • This research deals with algorithm for forest fire severity classification using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-3A image to mapping forest fire areas. The recent satellite of the KOMPSAT series, KOMPSAT-3A, demonstrates high resolution and multi-spectral imagery with infrared and high resolution electro-optical bands. However, there is a lack of research to classify forest fire severity using KOMPSAT-3A. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze forest fire severity using KOMPSAT-3A images. In addition, this research used pre-fire and post-fire Sentinel-2 with differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) to taking for burn severity distribution map. To test the effectiveness of the proposed procedure on April 4, 2019, Gangneung wildfires were considered as a case study. This research used the probability density function for the classification of forest fire damage severity based on R software, a free software environment of statistical computing and graphics. The burn severities were estimated by changing NDVI before and after forest fire. Furthermore, standard deviation of probability density function was used to calculate the size of each class interval. A total of five distribution of forest fire severity were effectively classified.

  • There are many problems in monitering environmental change around of nuclear power station, because interesting area is coastal and relatively large. The ground resolution of Landsat ETM+ imagery is high (30 m), but this imagery does not have enough informations for conducting atmospheric correction in evaluating sea surface temperatures. On the other hand, while it is possible to conduct atmospheric correction using MODIS imagery with it's two infrared bands, it's resolution is relatively low (1 km). Therefore, atmospheric corrected high resolution temperature information can be obtained from these two satellite images. In this study, digital numbers of Landsat ETM+ data in interesting area are georeferenced, converted to effective temperatures based on radiance value, and then the atmospheric correction is conducted using MODIS data. As a result, about $3.5^{\circ}C$ temperature differences were detected in comparing sea surface temperature of the surrounding area of Uljin nuclear power station with it of the same area located 5km far east.

  • To examine the detectability of the aerosol and/or Yellow dust from China crossing over the Yellow sea, three works carried out as follows , Firstly, a comparison was made of the visible(VIS), water vapor(WV), and Infrared(IR) images of the GMS-5 and NOAA/AVHRR on the cases of yellow sand event over Korea. Secondly, the spectral radiance and reflectance(%) was observed during the yellow sand phenomena on April, 1998 in Seoul using the GER-2600 spectroradiometer, which observed the reflected radiance from 350 to 2500 nm in the atmosphere. We selected the optimum wavelength for detecting of the yellow sand from this observation, considering the effects of atmospheric absorption. Finally, the atmospheric radiance emerging from the LOWTRAN-7 radiative transfer model was simulated with and without yellow sand, where we used the estimated aerosol column optical depth ($\tau$ 673 nm) in the Meteorological Research Institute and the d'Almeida's statistical atmospheric aerosol radiative characteristics. The image analysis showed that it was very difficult to detect the yellow sand region only by the image processing because the albedo characteristics of the sand vary irregularly according to the density, size, components and depth of the yellow sand clouds. We found that the 670-680 nm band was useful to simulate aerosol characteristics considering the absorption band from the radiance observation. We are now processing the simulation of atmospheric radiance distribution in the range of 400-900 nm. The purpose of this study is to present the preliminary results of the aerosol and/or Yellow dust detectability using the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager(OSMI), which will be mounted on KOMPSAT-1 as the ocean color monitoring sensor with the range of 400-900 nm wavelength.

  • Robot collects surrounding information to recognize tile unknown environment by using various sensors such as visual, infrared ray and ultra sonic sensors. Although visual sensor is the most popular one, it has some difficulties in collecting data in dark or too bright environment due to sensitivity of the light. It also requests significant amount of calculation on collecting data from certain images with marked, straight and curved ones. As an alternative, ultra sonic sensor can simply overcome this visual sensing system's flaw and easily be used. It is easier than visual system, especially in case of collecting data on object and distance in dark environment. Ultra sonic sensor can replace the expensive visual sensing system not only in avoiding obstacles but also in reaching to the target area smoothly. The purpose of this paper is to develop the algorithm to optimize the environmental recognition, path planning and free-ranging by minimizing errors caused by inaccurate information and by considering characteristics of the ultra sonic rays such as refraction and diffusion. This paper also realizes the system that can recognize the environment and make the appropriate path planning by applying the algorithm on this moving robot.

  • We are developing a new universal spectropolarimeter on the Domeless Solar Telescope (DST) at the Hida Observatory to realize precise spectropolarimetric observations in a wide range of wavelength in visible and near infrared. The system aims to open a new window of plasma diagnostics by using Zeeman effect, Hanle effect, Stark effect, impact polarization, and atomic polarization for measuring the external magnetic field, electric field, or an anisotropy in the excitation of the atoms. The polarimeter is a successor of formerly developed polarimeter on DST, which make possible to observe a polarization in a photospheric spectral line with polarimetric accuracy of 10-2 (Kiyohara et al. 2004). The new system consists of a 60cm aperture vacuum telescope, a high dispersion vacuum spectrograph, polarization modulator / analyzer composed of a rotating waveplate whose retardation is constant for a wide range of wavelength and Wallaston prism, and a fast and large format CCD camera or IR camera. Spectral images in both orthogonal polarizations are taken simultaneously with a frame rate of ~20Hz while the waveplate rotates continuously in a rate of 1rev./sec. Thus It takes 5 ~ 60 sec to observe polarization with accuracy of 10-3 in a wide wavelength range (400 - 1100nm). We also examined a polarimetric model of the telescope with accuracy of 10-3 to calibrate instrumental polarization on some wavelengths. In this talk, I will focus on the performance of the instrument.

  • In this study, the $SO_2$ addition effect on NOx removal has been conducted from a combustion flue gases by the do corona discharge-activated radical shower systems. The simulated flue gases were consisted of NO-O_2-$N_2$, NO-$CO_2-N_2-O_2$ and $NO-SO_2-CO_2-Na-O_2$([NO]o:200ppm and $[SO_2]o$:800ppm). The injection gases used as radical source gases were $NH_3$-Ar-air. $SO_2$ and NOx removal efficiency and the other by-products were measured by Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR) as well as $SO_2$. NOx and $NO_2$ gas detectors. By-product aerosol particles were also observed by Condensation Nucleation Particle Counter(CNPC) and SEM images after sampling. The results showed that asignificant aerosol Particle formation was observed during a removal operation in corona radical shower systems. The NOx removal efficiency significantly increased with increasing applied voltage and $NH_3$ molecule ratio. The $SO_2$ removal efficiency was not significantly effected by applied voltage and slightly increased with increasing $NH_3$ molecule ratio. The NOx removal efficiency for NO-$SO_2-CO_2-N_2-O_2$ was better than that for NO-$CO_2-N_2-O_2$.

  • Three activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using NaOH (N) as an activating agent. Hydrofluoric acid pre-leached rice husk was used as a precursor. After leaching, the precursor was washed with distilled water, dried, crushed, and then sieved; a size fraction of 0.3-0.5 mm was selected for carbonization in the absence of air at $600^{\circ}C$. The carbonization product (LC) was mixed with NaOH at ratios of 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4 (wt of LC: wt of NaOH) and the produced ACs after activation at $800^{\circ}C$ were designated NLC21, NLC31, and NLC41, respectively. Surface and textural properties were determined using nitrogen adsorption at $-196^{\circ}C$, scanning electron microscopy images, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. These ACs were used as adsorbents for lead(II) from aqueous solutions. The effects of the textural properties and the chemistry of the carbon surfaces were investigated and the impact of the operation conditions on the capacity for lead(II) sorption was also considered. Modification of NLC41 with $H_2O_2$ and $HNO_3$ gave two other adsorbents, $H_{NLC41}$ and $N_{NLC41}$ respectively. These two new samples exhibited the highest removal capacities for lead(II), i.e.117.5 and 128.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption data fitted the Langmuir isotherm and the kinetic adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters have been determined and they indicated a spontaneous endothermic process.
