  • EGR1 (early growth response 1) is dysregulated in many cancers and exhibits both tumor suppressor and promoter activities, making it an appealing target for cancer therapy. Here, we used a systematic multi-omics analysis to review the expression of EGR1 and its role in regulating clinical outcomes in breast cancer (BC). EGR1 expression, its promoter methylation, and protein expression pattern were assessed using various publicly available tools. COSMIC-based somatic mutations and cBioPortal-based copy number alterations were analyzed, and the prognostic roles of EGR1 in BC were determined using Prognoscan and Kaplan-Meier Plotter. We also used bc-GenEx-Miner to investigate the EGR1 co-expression profile. EGR1 was more often downregulated in BC tissues than in normal breast tissue, and its knockdown was positively correlated with poor survival. Low EGR1 expression levels were also associated with increased risk of ER+, PR+, and HER2- BCs. High positive correlations were observed among EGR1, DUSP1, FOS, FOSB, CYR61, and JUN mRNA expression in BC tissue. This systematic review suggested that EGR1 expression may serve as a prognostic marker for BC patients and that clinicopathological parameters influence its prognostic utility. In addition to EGR1, DUSP1, FOS, FOSB, CYR61, and JUN can jointly be considered prognostic indicators for BC.

  • Web 2.0 paradigm and technologies allow users to contribute their information voluntarily and actively to online community. This paper aims to investigate key determinants of information contribution in online communities. We come up with the research model and proposed hypotheses on the basis of intensive literature review on motivation theory, information literacy, and self expression. Using survey response date collected from those who have ever experienced in uploading or providing information on online community such as social media. A total of 262 survey responses were used to test research hypotheses. The results show that self expression motive influences on information representation capability(IRC) and information contribution. The impact of Information literacy on IRC is found to be significant, and IRC is positively related to information contribution. In addition, approval motive is proven to be key determinant of IRC and information contribution. Some practical implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The downlink performance of distributed antenna systems (DAS) with antennas selection is investigated in Rayleigh fading multicell environment, and the corresponding system capacity and bit error rate (BER) analysis are presented. Based on the moment generating function, the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the effective signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of the system are first derived, respectively. Then, with the available CDF and PDF, the accurate closed-form expressions of average channel capacity and average BER are further derived for exact performance evaluation. To simplify the expression, a simple closed-form approximate expression of average channel capacity is obtained by means of Taylor series expansion, with the performance results close to the accurate expression. Besides, the system outage capacity is analyzed, and an accurate closed-form expression of outage capacity probability is derived. These theoretical expressions can provide good performance evaluation for DAS downlink. It can be shown by simulation that the theoretical analysis and simulation are consistent, and DAS with antenna selection outperforms that with conventional blanket transmission. Moreover, the system performance can be effectively improved as the number of receive antennas increases.

  • In this paper, discontinuous interconnect lines are modeled as a cascaded line composed of many uniform interconnect lines. The system functions of respective uniform interconnect lines are determined, followed by its time domain response. Since the time domain response expression is a transcendental form, the waveform expression is reconfigured as an approximated linear expression. The proposed model has less than 2% error in the delay estimation.

  • Human Genome Project has recently been completed and the information on nucleotide sequences of our whole genome is now available at the public or commercial data banks. Next goals are to identify the functions of each gene and to elucidate the intracellular signal transduction pathways regulating gene expression. We have established a PCR-based bioassay to search for biologically active compounds that can modulate the expression of genes encoding important proteins. (omitted)

  • Partial least squares regression (PLS) is a biased, non-least squares regression method and is an alternative to the ordinary least squares regression (OLS) when predictors are highly collinear or predictors outnumber observations. One way to understand the properties of biased regression methods is to know how the estimators shrink the OLS estimator. In this paper, we introduce an expression for the shrinkage factor of PLS and develop a new shrinkage expression, and then prove the equivalence of the two representations. We use two near-infrared (NIR) data sets to show general behavior of the shrinkage and in particular for what eigendirections PLS expands the OLS coefficients.

  • This paper proposes a new absorbing boundary condition(ABC) for the FDTD simulation of waveguide problems. It is based on the exact analytic expression for the time domain EM wave propatation in the waveguide. The ABC derived from the expression has a convolution form whose kernel (the discrete Green's function) has a simple, closed form formula. Also, it is applicable to the wide variety of waveguide types with conducting boundaries and complex cross-sectional shapes.
