We propose a hierarchical disparity estimation algorithm with edge-preserving energy-based regularization. Initial disparity vectors are obtained from downsampled stereo images using a feature-based region-dividing disparity estimation technique. Dense disparities are estimated from these initial vectors with shape-adaptive windows in full resolution images. Finally, the vector fields are regularized with the minimization of the energy functional which considers both fidelity and smoothness of the fields. The first two steps provide highly reliable disparity vectors, so that local minimum problem can be avoided in regularization step. The proposed algorithm generates accurate disparity map which is smooth inside objects while preserving its discontinuities in boundaries. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the proposed disparity estimation technique.
In this paper, we propose an algorithm for pixel-based disparity estimation with reliability in the multi-view image. The proposed method estimates an initial disparity map using edge information of an image, and the initial disparity map is used for reducing the search range to estimate the disparity efficiently. Furthermore, disparity-mismatch on object boundaries and textureless-regions get reduced by adaptive block size. We generated intermediate-view images to evaluate the estimated disparity. Test results show that the proposed algorithm obtained $0.1{\sim}1.2dB$ enhanced PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) compared to conventional block-based and pixel-based disparity estimation methods.

In 3D video compression, a disparity vector (DV) pointing a corresponding block position in an adjacent view is a key coding tool to exploit statistical correlation in multi-view videos. In this paper, neighboring block-based disparity vector (NBDV) is shown with detail algorithm descriptions and coding performance analysis. The proposed method derives a DV from disparity motion vector information, obtained from spatially and temporally neighboring blocks, and provides a significant coding gain about 20% BD-rate saving in a texture-video-first-coding scheme. The proposed DV derivation method is adopted into the recent 3D video coding standards such as 3D-AVC and 3D-HEVC as the state-of-the-art DV derivation method.

We introduced a stereo camera on the aircraft to detect flight objects and to estimate the 3D position of them. The Saliency map algorithm based on PCT was proposed to detect a small object between clouds, and then we processed a stereo matching algorithm to find out the disparity between the left and right camera. In order to extract accurate disparity, cost aggregation region was used as a variable region to adapt to detection object. In this paper, we use the detection result as the cost aggregation region. In order to extract more precise disparity, sub-pixel interpolation is used to extract float type-disparity at sub-pixel level. We also proposed a method to estimate the spatial position of an object by using camera parameters. It is expected that it can be applied to image - based object detection and collision avoidance system of autonomous aircraft in the future.

In this paper, a new disparity detection algorithm which is robust to noise is presented. It detects the disparity of an arbitrary pixel through the iterative competition with neighbor pixels in the range of disparity. A diffusion process to improve stereo matching confidence is used prior to detecting disparity of an arbitrary pixel. It is used for aggregating initial matching measure of the difference map. If the image region for matching is too small, a wrong match might be found due to noise. On the contrary, the region is too big, it results in blurring of object boundaries. Therefore, we decide the image region for matching by using the diffusion process for aggregating matching measure, then detect the true disparity with proposed competition method to the distribution of matching measure. Through the proposed method we get the result of improving matching rate of 6.96% with real stereo imge. From the simulation with the stereo imge, the proposed disparity detection method significantly outperforms the conventional method to matching rate.

In this paper, an effective method of stereo image reconstruction through the regularized adaptive disparity estimation is proposed. Althougth the conventional adaptive disparity estimation method can sharply improve the PSNR of a reconstructed stereo image, but some problems of overlapping between the matching windows and disallocation of the matching windows can be occurred, because the matching window size changes adaptively in accordance with the magnitude of feature values. Accordingly, in thia paper, a new regularized adaptive disparity estimation technique is proposed. That is, by regularizing the estimated disparity vector with the neughboring disparity vectors, problems of the conventional adaptive disparity estimated scheme might be solved, and also the predicted stereo image can be more effectively reconstructed. From some experiments using the CCETT'S stereo image pairs of 'Man' and 'Claude', it is analyzed that the proposed disparity estimation scheme can improve PSNRs of the reconstructed images to 10.89dB, 6.13dB for 'Man' and 1.41dB, 0.81dB for 'Claude' by comparing with those of the conventional pixel-based and adaptive estimation method, respectively.
In this paper, we suggest robust object extraction algorithm taking advantage of efficient Belief Propagation method. It does not get a disparity information because of uniform region and occlusion region etc. on initial depth map that use forward direction disparity information although is object area. Therefore, We run parallel backward disparity information and brightness information for certain object extraction.
In this paper, we propose a multiresolution stereo matching method based on genetic algorithm using edge information. The proposed approach considers the matching environment as an optimization problem and finds the solution by using a genetic algorithm. A cost function composes of certain constraints which are commonly used in stereo matching. We defines the structure of chromosomes using edge pixel information of reference image of stereo pair. To increase the efficiency of process, we apply image pyramid method to stereo matching and calculate the initial disparity map at the coarsest resolution. Then initial disparity map is propagated to the next finer resolution, interpolated and performed disparity refinement. We valid our approach not only reduce the search time for correspondence but alse ensure the validity of matching.
In this paper, we propose an object contour tracking algorithm using snakes in stereo image sequences. The proposed technique is composed of two steps. In the first step, the candidate Snake points are determined from the motion information in 3-D disparity space. In the second step, the energy of Snake function is calculated to check whether the candidate Snake points converge to the edges of the interested objects. The energy of Snake function is calculated from the candidate Snake points using the disparity information obtained by patch matching. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated by applying it to various sample images. Results prove that the proposed technique can track the edges of objects of interest in the stereo image sequences even in the cases of complicated background images or additive components.

In this paper, we propose a real-time virtual re-convergence hardware platform especially to reduce the visual fatigue caused by stereoscopy. Our unique idea to reduce visual fatigue is to utilize the virtual re-convergence based on the optimized disparity-map that contains more depth information in the negative disparity area than in the positive area. Our virtual re-convergence hardware platform, which consists of image rectification, disparity estimation, depth post-processing, and virtual view control, is realized in real time with 60 fps on a single Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA chip.
