This paper describes the performance and internal flow characteristics of two-stage high pressure ring blower. Chamber-type test rig is designed and manufactured for the performance test of the ring blower. Detailed flow characteristics inside the impeller and casing are analyzed by three-dimensional numerical simulation. Throughout numerical simulation, non-uniform inflow to the impeller inlet and reverse flow are observed near the inlet duct of the blower. This non-uniform inflow makes various recirculation flow inside the casing with the complicated shape of casing. Low velocity region is locally formed near the both sides of impeller outlet due to the non-uniform inflow to the impeller, thus deteriorates the performance of a ring blower.

To develop an efficient pump operating rule for a retard basin, it is necessary to estimate inflow to the retard basin accurately which is affected by the backwater effect at the outlet of the conduit. The magnitude of the backwater effect is dependent on the water depth of a retard basin; however, the depth is determined by the amount of inflow and outflow. Thus, a real time simulation system that is able to simulate urban runoff and the pump operation with the consideration of the backwater effect is required to estimate the actual inflow to a retard basin. With this system, the efficient pump operating rule can be developed to diminish the possible flood damage on urban areas. In this study, a realtime simulation system is developed using the SWMM 5.0 DLL and Visual Basic 6.0 equipped with EXCEL to estimate inflow considering the backwater effect. The realtime simulation can be done by updating realtime input data such as minutely observed rainfall and the depth of a retard basin. Using those updated input data, the model estimates actual inflow, the amount of outflow discharged by pumps and gates, the depth of each junction, and flow rate at a sewer pipe on realtime basis. The developed model was applied to the Joonggok retard basin and demonstrated that it can be used to design a sewer system and to estimate actual inflow through the inlet sewer to reduce the inundation risk. As results, we find that the model can contribute to establish better operating practices for the pumps and the flood drainage system.

For the purpose of improving accuracy in jet noise prediction and investigating its generation mechanism, high subsonic jets were computed by using compressible Large Eddy Simulation(LES), wherein the inflow forcing or disturbance added in the inflow shear layer was incorporated. The far-field Sound Pressure Levels(SPL) as well as the flow field resulted in good agreement with available experimental data by applying only the high azimuthal modes among the inflow forcing parameters. We found that this result was due to an important role of the inflow forcing upon breaking down the axiymmetric vortices that caused high amplitude velocity and pressure fluctuations. In order to examine generation mechanism of the dominant noise component, wavelet transformation was introduced to reveal the presence of a well-organized structure of pressure fluctuations that originated mainly from vortex motions near the end of the jet potential core. This structure took a train of alternately positive and negative wavelet-transformed pressure regions along the jet distance, spreading towards the downstream with advection and propagation. It was concluded that this structure and its dynamic motion are the reason why a high subsonic jet produces the dominant noise with a particular downstream directivity.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the GRM (Grid based rainfall-Runoff Model) to the continuous simulation by simulating the dam inflow. The GRM was previously developed for the simulation of rainfall-runoff events but has recently been improved to enable continuous simulation. The target watersheds are Chungju dam, Andong dam, Yongdam dam, and Sumjingang dam basins, and runoff models were constructed with the spatial resolution of 500 m × 500 m. The simulation period is 21 years (2001 to 2021). The simulation results were evaluated over the 17 year period (2005 to 2021), and were divided into three data periods: total duration, wet season (June to September), and dry season (October to May), and compared with the observed daily inflow of each dam. Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE), correlation coefficient (CC), and total volume error (VE) were used to evaluate the fitness of the simulation results. As a result of evaluating the simulated dam inflow, the observed data could be well reproduced in the total duration and wet season, and the dry season also showed good simulation results considering the uncertainty of low-flow data. As a result of the study, it was found that the continuous simulation technique of the GRM model was properly implemented and the model was sufficiently applicable to the simulation of dam inflow in this study.
This study investigates turbulent flow around a square cylinder mounted on a flat surface at high Reynolds number using a large-eddy simulation (LES) model, particularly focusing on vortex streets behind the square cylinder. Total 9 simulation cases with different inflow wind directions, inflow wind speeds, and cylinder widths in the x- and y-directions are considered to examine the effects of inflow wind direction, speed, and cylinder widths on turbulent flow and vortex streets. In the control case, the inflow wind parallel to the x-direction has a maximum speed of $5m\;s^{-1}$ and the width and height of the cylinder are 50 m and 200 m, respectively. In all cases, down-drafts in front of the cylinder and updrafts, wakes, and vortex streets behind the cylinder appear. Low-speed flow below the cylinder height and high-speed flow above it are mixed behind the cylinder, resulting in strong negative vertical turbulent momentum flux at the boundary. Accordingly, the magnitude of the vertical turbulent momentum flux is the largest near the cylinder top. In the case of an inflow wind direction of $45^{\circ}$, the height of the boundary is lower than in other cases. As the inflow wind speed increases, the magnitude of the peak in the vertical profile of mean turbulent momentum flux increases due to the increase in speed difference between the low-speed and high-speed flows. As the cylinder width in the y-direction increases, the height of the boundary increases due to the enhanced updrafts near the top of the cylinder. In addition, the magnitude of the peak of the mean turbulent momentum flux increases because the low-speed flow region expands. Spectral analysis shows that the non-dimensional vortex generation frequency in the control case is 0.2 and that the cylinder width in the y-direction and the inflow wind direction affect the non-dimensional vortex generation frequency. The non-dimensional vortex generation frequency increases as the projected width of the cylinder normal to the inflow direction increases.
When predicting unsteady flow and pressure fields around a structure in a turbulent boundary layer by Large Eddy Simulation (LES), velocity fluctuations of turbulence (inflow turbulence), which reproduce statistical characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer, must be given at the inflow boundary. However, research has just started on development of a method for generating inflow turbulence that satisfies the prescribed turbulence statistics, and many issues still remain to be resolved. In our previous study, we proposed a method for generating inflow turbulence and confirmed its applicability by LES of an isotropic turbulence. In this study, the generation method was applied to a turbulent boundary layer developed over a flat plate, and the reproducibility of turbulence statistics predicted by LES computation was examined. Statistical characteristics of a turbulent boundary layer developed over a flat plate were investigated by a wind tunnel test for modeling the cross-spectral density matrix for use as targets of inflow turbulence generation for LES computation. Furthermore, we investigated how the degree of correspondence of the cross-spectral density matrix of the generated inflow turbulence with the target cross-spectral density matrix estimated by the wind tunnel test influenced the LES results for the turbulent boundary layer. The results of this study confirmed that the reproduction of cross-spectra of the normal components of the inflow turbulence generation is very important in reproducing power spectra, spatial correlation and turbulence statistics of wind velocity in LES.

Statistical analysis is performed to estimate the correlations between geological or geographical factor and groundwater inflow rates in the Seoul subway system. Correlation analysis shows that among several geological and geographical factors fractures and streams have most strong effects on inflow rate into tunnels. In particular, subway line 5∼8 are affected more by these factors than subway line 1∼4. Time series analysis is carried out to forecast groundwater inflow rate. Time series analysis is a useful empirical method for simulation and forecasts in case that physical model can not be applied to. The time series of groundwater inflow rates is calculated using the observation data. Transfer function-noise model is applied with the precipitation data as input variables. For time series analysis, statistical methods are performed to identify proper model and autoregressive-moving average models are applied to evaluation of inflow rate. Each model is identified to satisfy the lowest value of information criteria. Results show that the values by result equations are well fitted with the actual inflow rate values. The selected models could give a good explanation of inflow rates variation into subway tunnels.
We aim to investigate inflow history of matters that fall into the satellite systems around a dwarf galaxy in Lambda-Cold Dark Matter model. Each satellite system has unique properties because all satellite systems have different mass inflow history by environments and/or the events such as cosmic reionization and merging with other halos. To trace mass inflow history of the satellite systems, we perform three different cosmological zoom simulations whose galaxy mass is ${\sim}10^{10}M_{sun}$. Each initial zoom simulation covers a cubic box of $1Mpc/h^3$ with 17 million particles. Particle mass for dark matter (DM) and gas components is $M_{DM}=4.1{\times}10^3M_{sun}$ and $M_{gas}=7.9{\times}10^2M_{sun}$, respectively. Thus, each satellite system is resolved with more than hundreds - thousands of particles. We analyze the influence of the gravitational interaction with host galaxy, baryonic matter inflow by various cooling mechanisms, and merging events with other halos on the mass inflow history of satellite systems.

This study refers to the development of a hydrologic model simulating daily inflow and release rates for irrigation reservoirs. A daily - based model is needed for adequate operation of an irrigation reservoir sufficing the water demand for paddy fields which is closely related to meteorological conditions. Inflow rates to a reservoir need to be accurately described, which may be simulated using a hydrologic model from daily rainfall data. And the objective of this paper is to develop, test, and apply a hydrologic model for daily runoff simmulation. A well - known tank model was selected and modified to simulate daily inflow rates. The model parameters were calibrated using observed runoff data from twelve watersheds, Relationships between the parameters and the watershed characteristics were derived by a multiple regression analysis. The simulation results were in agreement with the data. The inflow model was found to simulate low flow conditions more accurately than high flow conditions, which may be adequate for water resources utilization.

Generally, a natural river discharge is highly regulated by the hydraulic structures, and the regulated flow is substantially different from natural inflow characteristics for the use of water resources planning. The natural inflow data are necessarily required for hydrologic analysis and water resources planning. This study aimed to develop an integrated model for more reliable simulation of daily dam inflow. First, a piecewise Kernel-Pareto distribution was used for rainfall simulation model, which can more effectively reproduce the low order moments (e.g. mean and median) as well as the extremes. Second, a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme was applied for the SAC-SMA rainfall-runoff model that is able to quantitatively assess uncertainties associated with model parameters. It was confirmed that the proposed modeling scheme is capable of reproducing the underlying statistical properties of discharge, and can be further used to provide a set of plausible scenarios for water budget analysis in water resources planning.
