This study was carried out to investigate on several factors, which contaminative the water quality through the water pipe during feeding water, in 42 largescaled apart-ments(total 84 cases) and assayed the Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) and concen-tration of heavy metals that inflow and outflow in reservior water in Jeonnam area(Mokpo, Suncheon, Yeosu) from January 1999 to December 1999. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The quality of the water pipe composition in the order of frequency in the quality of water pipes were Copper(45.2%)> Zinc(38.9%)> Stainless steel(9.5%)> PVC(4.8%)> PM(2.4%) in observing 42 sites. All of the drain pipes were used the cast iron quality. 2. The result of certification curve from 12 items(17kind) of VOCs was $1.0-4.0{\mu{g}}/{\ell}$ range, a coefficient of correlation was shown 0.99 over. A MDL of each substance range was within $0.1-1.0{\mu{g}}/{\ell}$. 3. The result of the assay, 5 kinds(Viny chloride, Dichloromethane, Ethylbenzene, M,P-xylene, Styrene) of the VOCs of 14 kinds was not detected and the other items were detected slightly. The detection rate of one item and over in total VOCs samples, were 25.9% in inflow and 27.9% in outflow. And frequency of detect in inflow/outflow of THM(Chloroform, Bromodichloro-methane, Dibromochloromethane, Bromoform) were shown higher than 94.1%, 97.0% each stages. It comes to the conclusion that all of the samples were reason able for drinking water standards. 4. The coefficient of correlation were reasonable, it shown 0.999 over in $0.1-1.0{\mu{g}}/{\ell}$ of a measuring range conditions of 4kinds in organic substance(Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn). 5. The results were showed suitability in 78 cases(92.9%) and unsuitability in 6 cases (7.1%), in 84 cases of in organic substances. Compare to inflow stage, mean concentrations of heavy metal, were increased slightly in Zn, Cu, Fe except Mn than outflow stage. The result of the mean concentration in organic substance inflow and outflow in the apartment water tank using Pair-compared T-test, in 95% reliance index, were $0.179mg/{\ell}(0.151-0.307mg/{\ell})$ in Zinc, $0.136mg/{\ell}(0.113-0.230mg/{\ell})$ in Copper, $0.052mg/{\ell}(0.048-0.098mg/{\ell})$ in Fe, and there was a bit growing tendency but there was no differece in Mn. 6. The mean concentration of Copper which used Cu pipe as a water supply pipe in apartment were $0.216mg/{\ell}(0.161-0.338mg/{\ell})$ in case of the Zine pipe were $0.286mg/{\ell}(0.204-0.435mg/{\ell})$. It shows that the detection rate was more higher than the other material used in Cu or Zn as the water supply pipe. We supposed to Cu and Zn substance were gushing out water supply pipe.

Constructed wetland system which can be applied to the rural wastewater treatment system was examined by pilot plant in Kon-Kuk University. Hydraulic loading rate of wastewater was about 0.16m$^3$/m$^2$. day and theoretical detention time in the system was 1.38 days. The effluent of the septic tank for the school building was applied as inflow to the system. The influent concentration of DO was zero but effluent was up to 4.37mg/${\ell}$ which implies that oxygen was supplied enough from atmosphere by reaeration to support biological activity of the system. Average influent concentration of BOD was 104mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 24mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 76%. Average influent concentration of COD was 215mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 63mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 70 % . Average influent concentration of SS was 78mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 10mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Two components, BOD and SS, are regulated by law to keep maximum water quality standard of 80mg/${\ell}$ when daily outflow rate is less than 100$m^3$/day which is the case of most rural communities. Therefore, the results from the experiment showed that constructed wetland system can meet the water quality standard easily. Average influent concentration of total nitrogen was 165mg/lwhich is relatively higher than normal wastewater, and effluent was about 156mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of only 6%. Average influent concentration of total phosphorus was 41 mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 6mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Overall, constructed wetland system was thought to be effective to treat wastewater if nitrogen removal mechanism is improved. Considering low cost, less maintenance, and high treatability, this system can be a practical alternative for the wastewater treatment in rural area The experiment was performed during the summer and fall season, and treatment efficiency of the system is expected to decrease in low temperature. therefore, further study including temperature is required to evaluate feasibility of the system more in detail.

After installing calibrated depth scale at 11 different points inside the nine streams network for estimating time of concentration of stream in Young-Heung island near coastal region of Incheon we estimated the flow against actual rainfall events. By considering time of concentration formula which here mainly used for estimating the time of concentration from practical experiments, compared were three methods of inflow time and accepted to method of used the chart. The maximum flow occurrence time was estimated by an outflow model and observed maximum flow occurrence time were determined by to a comparative analysis. Kirpich formula was selected as the proper formula for calculating the concentration time inside the island streams. Kirpich formula could be applicable for the expanded range while catchment area of $0.453km^2$ and channel bed slope of $3{\sim}5%$ to catchment area of $2.0km^2$ and channel bed slope of about 1.5%.

This study was carried out to assess water quality and to introduce the management measures for water quality improvement with the collected data from 87 agricultural reservoirs in Han river watershed. According to the water quality criteria (WQC) for lake based on the COD, TP, TN and chl.a concentration, 18, 16, 4 and 19 of 87 reservoirs exceed class IV, respectively. Based on the trophic state index (TSI) with chl.a concentration, 51 of selected reservoirs appeared to be eutrophic. Phosphorus was limiting nutrient on algal growth in 58 reservoirs. TP, chl.a and COD concentration in 23 of 49 agricultural reservoirs with chl.a concentration ${\geq}25{\mu}g/L$ and eutrophic exceed class IV by WQC. Also, the mean depth in 21 of 23 reservoirs was below 5m. Our results suggest that advanced wastewater treatment and crop land control in watershed of reservoirs with TP concentration ${\geq}0.1mg/L$ would be a effective tool to improve water quality. Dredging would to be effective measure in reservoirs with mean depth < 5 m and relatively old age. In reservoirs with chl.a concentration ${\geq}50{\mu}g/L$, application of technique such dissolved air flotation (DAF) and P inactivation be effective to improve water quality by removing particulate matters in water column. The management measure to control inflow such as sedimentation basin, Pre-dam and diversion would to be application in reservoirs with shallow depth, while large watershed and surface area.

This study focused on determining the specific causes and prevention methods of mass fish deaths occurred in five reservoirs (Gagugi, Neupgokgi, Danggokgi, Sagokji, and Hangokji) in Andong-si. For this purpose, a survey of agricultural land and livestock in the upper part of the reservoirs and analysis of water quality in the reservoir irrespective of whether it rains or not were conducted. We attempted to examine the changes in dissolved oxygen (DO) in the surface and bottom layers of reservoirs and changes in DO depending on the amount of livestock compost and time. Based on the above investigations, treatment plans were established to efficiently control the inflow of contaminated water into reservoirs. The rainfall and farmland areas in the upper part of the reservoir were investigated using Google and aviation data provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The current status of livestock farms distributed around the reservoirs was also examined because compost from these farms can flow into the reservoir when it rains. Various water quality parameters, such as phosphate phosphorus (PO4-P) and ammonium nitrogen (NH3-N), were analyzed and compared for each reservoir during the rainy season. Changes in the DO concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) were also observed at the inlet of the reservoir during raining using an automated instrument. In addition, DO was measured until the concentration reached 0 ppm in 10 min by adding livestock compost at various concentrations (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% by wt.), where the concentration of the livestock compost represents the relative weight of rainwater. The DO concentration in the surface layer of reservoirs was 3.7 to 5.3 ppm, which is sufficient for fish survival. However, the fish could not survive at the bottom layer with DO concentration of 0.0-2.1 ppm. When the livestock compost was 0.3%, DO required 10-19 h to reach 0 ppm. Considering these results, it was confirmed that the DO in the bottom layer of the reservoir could easily change to an anaerobic state within 24 h when the livestock compost in the rainwater exceeds 0.3%. The results show that the direct cause of fish mortality is the inflow of excessive livestock compost into reservoirs during the first rainfall in spring. All the surveyed reservoirs had relatively good topographical features for the inflow of compost generated from livestock farms. This keeps the bottom layer of the reservoir free of oxygen. Therefore, to prevent fish death due to insufficient DO in the reservoir, measures should be undertaken to limit the amount of livestock compost flowing into the reservoir within 0.3%, which has been experimentally determined. As a basic countermeasure, minerals such as limestone, dolomite, and magnesia containing calcium and magnesium should be added to the compost of livestock farms around the reservoir. These minerals have excellent pollutant removal capabilities when sprayed onto the compost. In addition, measures should be taken to prevent fish death according to the characteristics of each reservoir.

A way to adsorptively remove indoor carbon dioxide at relatively lower concentration under ambient temperature was studied. A small lab-scale carbon dioxide adsorption and desorption reactors were prepared, and 5A and 13X zeolites were packed in this reactors to investigate their adsorption and desorption characteristics. The inflow carbon dioxide concentration was controlled to 5,000 ppm, relatively higher concentration found in indoor spaces with air quality problems, by diluting carbon dioxide with nitrogen gas. The flow rate was varied as 1~5 L/min, and the carbon dioxide concentration after this reactor was constantly monitored to examine the adsorption characteristics. It was found that 5A adsorbed more carbon dioxide than 13X. A lab-scale carbon dioxide desorption reactor was also prepared to investigate the desorption characteristics of zeolites, which is essential for the regeneration of used zeolites. The desorption temperature was varied as $25{\sim}200^{\circ}C$, and the desorption pressure was varied as 0.1~1.0 bar. Carbon dioxide desorbed better at higher temperature, and lower pressure. 5A could be regenerated more than three times by thermal desorption at $180^{\circ}C$. It is required to modify zeolites for higher adsorption and better regeneration performances.
Aerosol size and number concentration were observed in the atmospheric boundary layer over Beijing (from near the ground to 1,200 m) on March 15 (a clear day) and 16 (a dusty day), 2005. The results were further compared with lidar measurements in order to understand the dependency of extinction on the particle size distribution and their vertical changes. The boundary layer atmosphere was composed of several sub-layers, and a dry air layer appeared between 400 and 1,000 m under the influence of dust event. In this dry air layer, the concentration of the fine-mode particles (diameter smaller than $1.0\;{\mu}m$) was slightly lower than the value on the clear day, while the concentration of coarse-mode particles (diameter larger than $1.0\;{\mu}m$) was remarkably higher than that on the clear day. This situation was attributed to the inflow of an air mass containing large amounts of Asian dust particles and a smaller amount of fine-mode particles. The results strongly suggest that the fine-mode particles affect light extinction even in the dusty atmosphere. However, quantitatively the relation between extinction and particle concentration is not satisfied under the dusty atmospheric conditions since laser beam attenuates in the atmosphere with high concentration of particles. Laser beam attenuation effect becomes larger in the relation between extinction and coarse particle content comparing the relation between extinction and fine particle content. To clarify this problem technically, future in situ measurements such as balloon-borne lidar are suggested. Here extinction was measured at 532 nm wavelength. Measurements of extinction at other wavelengths are desired in the future.

In this study, in order to analyze the water purification efficiency according to the influent water conditions of artificial wetlands, the purification efficiency was compared at two points where sewage treatment water flows in and one point where good effluent flows in. As a result of reviewing the results of the analysis of influent and effluent and the removal efficiency, the T-N and T-P removal efficiency was calculated at 54.7% and 77.4%, respectively, for the two points where sewage treatment water was treated, the treatment efficiency of SS 90.8%, BOD 51.1%, TOC 30.6%, T-N 38.8%, T-P 55.3% was shown. As a result, the efficiency of removing pollutants in the artificial wetland was found to be proportional to the concentration of influent water, and in order to create an efficient artificial wetland, it is judged that thorough review and management at the design stage are necessary considering that the removal efficiency of high-concentration contaminated water was high.
Electroosmotic tests were performed on saturated marine clay specimens contaminated with lead to investigate the efficiency of the electrokinetic technique for removal of heavy metals from the cohesive soils. For this purpose, testing program included variable conditions such as the concentration of lead (500, 5, 000, 50, 000mg/kg), the level of electrical current (10, 50, 100 mA), operating duration (5, 15, 30days), and the application of three dirtferent chemicals for enhancement in efficiency. The pH of inflow and outflow, electroosmotic flow and electrical conductivity during the test, and the pH and the concentration of lead across the specimen after the test are presented. Test results came to the conclusion that the electrokinetic technique was very effective to remove heavy metals such as lead from the contaminated cohesive soil. Adding ecetic acid at the cathod to dissolve the procipitates of lead hydroxide as found to be effective for the enhancement of the efficiency in remediation.
This study investigated the distributive property of micropollutants in sediment around Gwang-yang bay using simultaneous analytical method of 310 chemicals. In the results, the major micropollutants detected were CH type chemicals such as aliphatic, polycyclic compounds, benzenes, and CHN(O) type chemicals aromatic amines, and pesticides. Insecticides of pesticide type were frequently detected at all sampling site. The total concentration of micropollutants were higher in summer than in winter and measured within the range of $ND{\sim}36.50{\mu}g/L$. Also, because of effect of seomjin river, GY6 of all sampling site detected by the highest concentration, GY10 and 11 located in Gwang-yang outside bay were not detected the micropollutants. From the result of this study, we should estimated that the industrial complex located in Gwang-yang inside bay and an inflow of fresh water through the Seomjin river are major pollution sources of Gwang-yang bay.
