Gibberellin Effects on Inflorescence Development, Bud Dormancy and Root Development in North American Ginseng

  • Gibberellic acid (GA) was applied to field-grown 3-year-old North American ginseng (Panax quinqueiolius L.) between 1 and 4 times, before and during bloom in 1999. Applications of both GA$_3$ and GA$\sub$4+7/ four times (x4) to the developing inflorescences increased maximum pedicel length, and seed head diameter and height. Treatment with GA$\sub$4+7/ increased mean and total root fresh weight linearly, whereas those treated with GA$_3$ did not show similar increases. Both GA$_3$ and GA$\sub$4+7/ at 50, 100 and 200 mg L$\^$-1/ (x4) increased the incidence of breaking of dormancy of perennating buds with GA$_3$ being twice as effective as GA$\sub$4+7/. Both GA$_3$ and GA$\sub$4+7/ treatments resulted in an increased number of new bud initials forming per root, with the number of new initials per root increased two-fold by the GA$_3$ sprays compared to GA$\sub$4+7/.

Two New Naturalized Species From Korea, Carduus natans and Lepidium Latifolium (한국 미기록 귀화식물: 사향엉겅퀴(Carduus natans)와 큰키다닥냉이(Lepidium latifolium))

  • Two naturalized species, Carduus natans L. and Lepidium latifolium L. were newly reported from Korea. Carduus natans, "Sa-hyang-ung-gung-kwi", was found from Nanjido, Seoul, and Yangsuri and Naejangri, Gyunggi-do. It is distinguished from widely naturalized C. crispus by having large nodding heads (30-60mm in diameter) and acuminate lanceolate involucral bracts. Lepidium latifolium, "Keun-ki-da-dag-naeng-i", was found from Noeul Park, Nanjido, Seoul. It is distinguished from the related species by having tall height (about 1 m), subsessile upper leaves, pinnately lobed lower leaves, and corymbose inflorescence.

  • Twin-bud seedlings and four-leaflet seedlings of ginseng were found and transplanted to field and their growth characteristics were investigated. 1. Appearance frequencies of twin-bud and four-leaflet seedlings were 0.3 and 0.4 percent, respectively, in common nursery bed: and were 6.6 and 28.4 percent, respectively, in polystem line. 2. Generally, the growth of twin.bud and four-leaflet seedlings were better than those of common seedlings both in aerial part and in root. Root weights of both type seedlings exceeded the common ones by 66 and 38 percent, respectively. 3. When they became two-year-old plants, leafiet number of common plant was 11.6, and those of twin-bud and four-leaflet-seedling plants were 18.1 and 13.8, respectively. There were no inflorescence in twin-bud-seedling plant, but the ratios of in florescent Plant in four-leaflet.seedling and common plant were 44.0 and 12.5 percent, respectively. 4. In two-year-old plant, root weights of twin-bud and four-leaflet-seedling plants were heavier than those of common ones by 27 and 20 percent, respectively.

Taxonomic implications of floral morphology in the subfamily Asclepiadoideae (Apocynaceae s.l.) in Korea

  • We examined the floral morphology of 15 taxa of five genera (Cynanchum, Marsdenia, Metaplexis, Tylophora, and Vincetoxicum) in Korean Asclepiadoideae using a stereoscopic and scanning electronic microscope to clarify and describe the floral characteristics. In this study, the corolla and corona types, the types of corona lobes, appendages on the corona lobes, and the apex shape of the style head are considered as diagnostic characteristics at the generic level. The genus Vincetoxicum, which is treated as a synonym of the genus Cynanchum in Korea, is distinguished from Cynanchum by the interstaminal part on the corona, fleshy and mainly triangular or ellipsoid corona lobes, and various corolla colors. In Cynanchum, various corona types have been observed, while Vincetoxicum have similar corona types among the taxa. In addition, the main floral characteristics at the species level were as follows: flowering time, inflorescence, corolla color, trichomes on the corolla surfaces, apex shape of the corona lobe, and trichomes on the ovary. This study presents the taxonomic importance of floral morphology by providing descriptions and diagnostic characteristics among the genera and species investigated.

Growth and Flowering of Orostachys japonicus A. Berger as Affected by Phosphorus and Potassium Fertilization (인산과 카리 시비량에 따른 바위솔의 생장과 개화)

  • Shoot weight of Orostachys japonicus should determine its profitability. The study was done to determine the effect of phosphorus and potassium fertilization (0, 5, 10, 20 kg $P_2O_5$ or $K_2O$ /1000 $m^2$) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 when afterward samples were taken every 4 weeks to Nov. 16. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were increased with increased P and K levels. Leaf and bract, floret, shoot and total dry weights showed similar response to the above morphological characters although P fertilization more increased them than K fertilization. Florets were more formed with increased P and K levels but were not flowered due to the night-break treatment, meaning that P and K fertilization had little effect on anthesis of the florets formed.

  • The effect of a water-soluble extract from natural materials on radiation-induced mutations was studied by means of TSH assay in Tradescantia 4430 stamen hair cells. Inflorescence cuttings, with or without pretreatments of natural extracts for 3 hours, were exposed to 1 Gy of gamma ray. Comparisons were made on the basis of pooled data during the peak interval between the mean pink mutation frequencies of the experimental groups. Pretreatments of FB or FB-I resulted in about two-fold increases of the pink mutation frequencies, compared to those of the control group. Synergism between certain fractions and radiation was a possible cause of the increased DNA damage. FB and FB-I had a radiosensitizing effects on the pink mutations in Tradescantia 4430 stamen hair cells (p<0.001). On the other hand, the extract PP in a proper concentration significantly reduced the pink mutation frequencies (p<0.05). The result means that PP has a protective effect on the radiation-induced cell damage.

Morphometric Study of Achyranthes bidentata Complex Using Numerical Taxonomy (수리분류를 이용한 쇠무릎 분류군의 외부형태 연구)

  • 'Usul' is a traditional medicinal herb, which has anti-inflammatory activities is distributed in India, Nepal, China, Korea, Japan. Korea pharmacopeia listed 'Usul' as either a species of Achyranthes japonica (Miq.) Nakai or A. bidentata Blume. Recent taxonomic studies in China and Japan delimited these taxa as two varieties, A. bidentata Blume var. bidentata and var. japonica Miq. A multivariate morphometric study of Achyranthes bidentata complex was undertaken to assess the entities of taxa that usefully could be recognized. Five quantitative characters were reviewed and analyzed with 293 specimens from Korea. The univariate analysis of inflorescence length, interval between florets, angle between floret and floral axis indicated that ranges among all taxa were continuous. However, quantitative characters of membrane size and the number of hairs within 4 were useful to identify two varieties. In PCA, the first three principal components accounted for 89.4% of the total variance. PCA revealed that var. bidentata showed distinctions in morphological attributes from var. japonica entity. Therefore, continued recognition at the infraspecifc level for these taxa is supported.

  • Eighteen accessions of Curcuma germplasm were evaluated for use as cut flowers or potted plants. Curcuma species or cultivars that have colorful showy bracts and long inflorescence longevity can be produced as cut flowers or potted plants. For cut flower uses, following cultivars were recommended: C. alismatifolia 'Chiangmai Pink', 'Tropic Snow', 'Chiangmai Dark Pink', 'Lady Di', and 'Siam Violet Lily' with long flower stalk length (40~55 cm) and long vase life. For potted plant production, C. alismatifolia 'Cambodian Scarlet', 'Cambodian Red', C. sparganifolia 'Siam ruby', and C. thorelii 'Chiangmai Snow' producing short flower stalk length (about 10~20 cm) were evaluated.

A Taxonomic Study on Sedum Section Telephium in Korea (한국산 돌나물속 Telephium 절 식물의 분류학적 연구)

  • This study was attempted to clarify the taxonomic problems that have been raised up to now in the study o section Telephium, genus, Sedum: the delimitation of taxa belong to Telephium group, their relationship, and nomenclatural confusion and the rank of Telephium group. Specimens were collected at 19 sites in Korea. The habitat, distribution, external morphological characters of habit, leaf shape, phyllotaxy, inflorescence, color of floral organs, floral formula, carpel, capsule, and micro-characters of pollen, seed coat, stigma and anther with SEM were examined. Through this study, the following results were obtained. The delimitation of taxa that belong to section Telephium in Korea and their relationship Nomenclatural errors were corrected. In S. rotundifolium Lee, species epithet“rotundifolium”is later homonym of s. rothundifolium Lamarck, so corrected to S. duckbongii Chung and Kim by article 64 of ICBN. Phyllotaxy was elucidated to meaningless, character in sect. Telephium. S. taquetii was a separate species from S. viridescens and not of its synonym. S. alboroseum Baker in Korea was S. erythrostictum sensu Master not of S. erythrostictum Miquel. By this study , taxa of sect. Telephium in Korea were arranged to 7 species. Considering interspecific relationship of sect. Telephium, S. duckbongii and S. alboroseum are considered to be more advanced forms and S. viridescens, S. taquetii, and S. viviparum to be more primitive forms among 7 species.

New Spray Chrysanthemum Cultivar, 'Prima Donna', Large and Vigorous Single Type with Pink Petals for Cut Flower

  • A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Prima Donna' was released by National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), in 2008. The cross was made between 'Plano' and 'Yeonja' in 2005. Trials were conducted from 2006 to 2008 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading cultures in summer and retarding cultures in spring. The natural flowering time of 'Prima Donna' is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by photo-periodic control. The cultivar has single type flowers with pink petals, green center and good inflorescence. The growth of plant is very vigorous. The diameter of flower is 7.0cm. The number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 13 and 42, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 59 and its vase life is 26.1 days in autumn season.
