  • Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) coupled with PEST which is optimization program was calibrated and validated at Bochung watershed by using monitoring data of water quantities and nutrient loading. Although the calibrated data were limited, model parameters of each land use type were optimized and coefficient of determinations were ranged from 0.94 to 0.99 for runoff, from 0.89 to 1.00 for TN loading, and from 0.92 to 1.00 for TP loading. The optimized hydrological parameters indicated that the forested land could retain rainfall within soil layer with high soil layer depth and infiltration rate compared with other land use type. Hydrological characteristics of paddy rice field are low infiltration rate and coefficient of roughness. The calibrated parameters related to nutrient loading indicated generation of nutrient pollution from agricultural area including upland and paddy rice field higher than other land use type resulting from fertilizer application. Overall PEST program is useful tool to calibrate HSPF automatically without consuming time and efforts.

  • Recently, rapid industrialization, urbanization and higher living standards accelerate to increase groundwater consumption resulting in continuously dropping groundwater elevations. To maintain enough groundwater volume without dropping groundwater elevations, the proper groundwater rechatge is necessary. The groundwater rechatge can be classified into two categories which are natural rechatge and artiticial rechatge. Even though the natural rechatge through by dired infiltration from the rainfall is desirable, the artificial groundwater rechatge is necessaty when the increment of groundwater consumption exceeds natural recharge rate. Well method and scattering method are utilized as artificial rechatging method, a severe disadvantage, which is the reduction of the void of soil surface, is indicated in the well method. Recently, the underground piping method, which is a scattering method, is receiving increasing attention as a proper recharging method. The method is indirectly to supply water to the underground using an underground piping system. Therefore, the void of soil surface is not severely reduced and better infiltration rate can be achieved. In this paper, the artificial groundwater rechatge using underground piping method is investigated through experiments and numerical analysis. The influence of the groundwater by underground piping method is evaluated through comparing recharging heights. Good agreements between experiments and numerical analysis are obtained and the artificial groundwater recharge by underground piping method is well tested and verified.

  • Excessive rainfalls due to climatic changes can trigger an increase in rainfall-induced slope failures that pose real threats to both lives and properties. Many high slopes in residual soils could stand at a steep angle, but failed during or after rainfall. Commonly, these slopes have a deep groundwater table and negative pore-water pressures in the unsaturated zone above the groundwater table contribute to the shear strength of soil and consequently to factor of safety of the slope. Stability assessment of slope under rainfall requires information on rate of rainwater infiltration in the unsaturated zone and the resulting changes in pore-water pressure and shear strength of soil. This paper describes the application of unsaturated soil mechanics principles and theories in the assessment of rainfall effect on stability of slope through proper characterization of soil properties, measurement of negative pore-water pressures, seepage and slope stability analyses involving unsaturated and saturated soils. Factors controlling the rate of changes in factor of safety during rainfall and a preventive method to minimize infiltration are highlighted in this paper.

  • The objective of this research was to develop growth media for artificial ground by blending calcined clay and coconut peat. To achieve this, aggregates of clay particles were mixed with disel oil and heated to high temperature(1150~120$0^{\circ}C$) to expand clays. The particle sizes of expanded clay were controlled to 2~5mm in diameter. Then expanded clayes were mixed with coconut peat and changes of soil physicochemical properties and their effect on plant growth of Hedera L. were determined. The infiltration rate of calcined clay was very high, but the water holding capacity, the cation exchange capacity(CEC), and the nutrient contents were low. The characteritics of coconut peat was vice verse to calcined clay. This indicates that the mixture of calcined clay and coconut peat have the better characteristics than each material. As compared to mineral soil, the infiltration rate, the water holding capacity, the CEC and the nutrient contents increased, but bulk density decreased to about 1/4. And, Hedera L. grown in the mixture of calcined clay and coconut peat(6:4, v/v) had higher plant height, longer leaf length, more total number of leaves per plant and fresh weight than that grown in mineral soil, but statistical differences were not observed between two treatments.

  • Spinel/zirconia-glass composites prepared by melt-infiltration were fabricated to investigate the effect of zirconia addition on mechanical and optical properties of the composites. The infiltration distance was parabolic with respect to time as described by the Washburn equation and the penetration rate constant, K, decreased due to the reduction in pore size as the amount of zirconia rose. Although the optimum strength(308 MPa) of the Spinel/zirconia-glass composites was observed when the zirconia was added up to 20 wt%, K and transmittance decreased as the zirconia content rose. In conclusion, it suggested that the positive effect of strength as a result of the addition of zirconia was not effective.

  • With urbanization in many countries, many pervious areas are being converted into impervious areas. These land use changes cause many negative impacts on runoff and water quality in the areas. Especially runoff volume and peak runoff are increasing with urbanization. In addition to the increased runoff, more pollutant transports to the downstream areas. For these reasons, Low Impact Development (LID) are nowadays being introduced in urban planning. For environment-friendly and economical urban development, the LID Integrated Management Practices (IMPs) are applied in various urban development. However, exact effects on runoff and water quality of various LID IMPs are not assessed with proper LID evaluation technique. Thus, the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) 5.0 model was slightly modified to simulate the effect of infiltration manhole on runoff and water quality. For comparison of runoff and TSS (Total Suspended Solids) from the study area (26.5 ha), three scenarios were made in this study. It was found that runoff volume, peak runoff, and TSS could be reduced with infiltration manholes and pervious pavements to some degree. Although, there are many limitations in the analysis of LID effects on runoff and TSS, similar trends shown in this study would be expected with site-specific LID IMPs. Thus, it is strongly recommended that various site-specific LID IMPs, such as infiltration facilities, should be applied as much as possible for environment-friendly urban planning.

  • Eosinophils play an essential role in allergy reaction after parasite infection. To examine the immune reaction induced by eosinophils, we investigated the allergy reaction in BALB/c mice infected with Echinostoma hortense's metacercariae, as well as the effect of ketotifen, an anti-allergy drug, on eosinophil immune reaction in the villi of host intestine. The worm recovery rate was higher in ketotifen-treated mice than in untreated mice and the worms in ketotifen-treated mice survived longer than those in untreated mice. The antibody titer in the serum of ketotifen-treated mice was very low. Especially, Echinostoma hortense infection strongly increased serum IgE level and eosinophil infiltration into the villi of the mouse intestine. Ketotifen treatment suppressed eosinophil infiltration into the infected areas and inhibited IL-4 production. The reduced IL-4 production may be related with the reduction of IgE, IgG1 and IgG2 production. In conclusion, ketotifen inhibited eosinophil infiltration functioning in the allergy reaction induced by parasite infection and the expression of immunoglobulins and cytokines.

  • This paper describes the rainfall-induced slope failures caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. The emphasis was on quantifying the effect of fine-grained contents which are influencing on the infiltration rate in the wetting front of initially unsaturated slopes during rainfall. Suction tests by tensiometer were performed for five mixture specimens with varying fine-grained contents and then, numerical analyses for the stability of unsaturated slopes are carried out for different relative densities and mixture portions based on the soil water characteristic curves obtained by GCTS pressure plate. It is shown that the fines are highly influenced on wetting front suction of unsaturated soil slopes. Based on the results, it is found that until 15% fine content is the limit showing different wetting front suction, beyond which the wetting band depth do not affect considerably the stability of unsaturated slopes.

  • ${\beta}$-SiC formation mechanism in Si melt-C-SiC system with varying in size of carbon source was investigated. A continuous reaction sintering process using Si melt infiltration method was adopted to control the reaction sintering time effectively. It was found that ${\beta}$-SiC formation mechanism in Si melt-C-SiC system was directly affected by the size of carbon source. In the Si melt-C-SiC system with large carbon source ${\beta}$-SiC formation mechanism could be divided into two stages depending on the reaction sintering time: in early stage of reaction sintering carbon dissolution in Si melt and precipitation of ${\beta}$-SiC was occurred preferentially and then SIC nucleation and growth was controlled by diffusion of carbon throughy the ${\beta}$-SiC layer formed on graphite particle. Furthmore a dissolution rate of graphite particles in Si melt could be accelerated by the infiltration of Si melt through basal plane of graphite crystalline.

  • Hollow copper oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CuO/MWCNT) composites were fabricated via an optimized infiltration-reduction-oxidation method, which is more facile and easy to control. The crystalline structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared CuO/MWCNT composites deliver an initial capacity of 612.3 mAh·g-1 and with 80% capacity retention (488.2 mAh·g-1) after 100 cycles at a current rate of 0.2 A·g-1. The enhanced electrochemical performance is ascribed to the better electrical conductivity of MWCNT, the hollow structure of CuO particles, and the flexible structure of the CuO/MWCNT composites.
