Effects of diaphragm flexibility on the seismic design acceleration of precast concrete diaphragms

  • A new seismic design methodology for precast concrete diaphragms has been developed and incorporated into the current American seismic design code. This design methodology recognizes that diaphragm inertial forces during earthquakes are highly influenced by higher dynamic vibration modes and incorporates the higher mode effect into the diaphragm seismic design acceleration determination using a first mode reduced method, which applies the response modification coefficient only to the first mode response but keeps the higher mode response unreduced. However the first mode reduced method does not consider effects of diaphragm flexibility, which plays an important role on the diaphragm seismic response especially for the precast concrete diaphragm. Therefore this paper investigated the effect of diaphragm flexibility on the diaphragm seismic design acceleration for precast concrete shear wall structures through parametric studies. Several design parameters were considered including number of stories, diaphragm geometries and stiffness. It was found that the diaphragm flexibility can change the structural dynamic properties and amplify the diaphragm acceleration during earthquakes. Design equations for mode contribution factors considering the diaphragm flexibility were first established through modal analyses to modify the first mode reduced method in the current code. The modified first mode reduced method has then been verified through nonlinear time history analyses.

  • The use of smart dampers to optimally control the response of structures is on the increase. To maximize the potential use of such damper systems, their accurate modeling and assessment of their performance is of vital interest. In this study, the performance of a controllable fluid dashpot damper, in terms of damper forces, damper dynamic range and damping force hysteretic loops, respectively, is studied mathematically. The study employs a damper Bingham-Maxwell (BingMax) model whose mathematical formulation is developed using a Fourier series technique. The technique treats this one-dimensional Navier-Stokes's momentum equation as a linear superposition of initial-boundary value problems (IBVPs): boundary conditions, viscous term, constant Direct Current (DC) induced fluid plug and fluid inertial term. To hold the formulation applicable, the DC current level to the damper is supplied as discrete constants. The formulation and subsequent simulation are validated with experimental results of a commercially available magneto rheological (MR) dashpot damper (Lord model No's RD-1005-3) subjected to a sinusoidal stroke motion using a 'SCHENK' material testing machine in the Materials Laboratory at the University of Technology, Sydney.

  • For the method of train position detection, ground-based train position estimation mainly has been applied so far. Ground-based position detection is the way to detect train current positions by installing train position equipments on railroad lines. However, the ground-based methods should install detection equipments on each section, and can only be able to detect train positions from main command center. So this method has several disadvantages such as an discontinuous position detection, an increment in cost of installation and maintenance. To make possible continuous train position detection, and to minimize amount of the cost, the vehicle-based position detection method should be chosen to determine train positions by loading position equipments on vehicles. In this paper, to realize the vehicle-based train position detection method, configuration scheme of train position detection equipment is suggested by using GPS, inertial sensor, speed sensor and its performance is verified by simulations.

  • This paper described an optimal control technique for position control of an inverter-fed PMSM drive. A control system of PM machine for position, speed and current control based on optimal sliding mode control system is discussed. This is an effective means to keep a system insensitive to parameter variation, disturbance and chattering reduction. The main purpose of the control is to improve the dynamic response of the PMSM with the load of the inertial plant. The optimal sliding mode control strategy is analyzed and the performance is investigated by the computer simulation using actual parameters of a drive system, Simulation results are given and discussed.

  • The implementation of modern guidance law derived from optimal control theory requires accurate current states of target, for example, position, velocity and acceleration etc. But there is no sensors that measure the target states directly. So they are estimated from measurable data. For atmospheric missile engagement, direct application of the modern guidance laws may result In deterioration of Intercept performance because of poor observability associated with angles only-measurements by passive seeker and homing geometry. In this paper, a trajectory modulation method called "adaptive Intermittent maneuvers" is added to the modern guidance law, so the observability is enhanced and, consequently, improved the intercept performance. The estimation algorithm called "modified gain pseudo-measurement filter" is used for tracking filter. It is assumed that the passive seeker measure the angles between line of sight and Inertial frame. The Monte-Carlo simulation for realistic air-to-air Intercept scenario are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of intermittent maneuvers.ermittent maneuvers.

Improved LVRT Capability and Power Smoothening of DFIG Wind Turbine Systems

  • This paper proposes an application of energy storage devices (ESD) for low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability enhancement and power smoothening of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine systems. A grid-side converter (GSC) is used to maintain the DC-link voltage. Meanwhile, a machine-side converter (MSC) is used to control the active and reactive powers independently. For grid disturbances, the generator output power can be reduced by increasing the generator speed, resulting in an increased inertial energy of the rotational body. Design and control techniques for the energy storage devices are introduced, which consist of current and power control loops. Also, the output power fluctuation of the generator due to wind speed variations can be smoothened by controlling the ESD. The validity of the proposed method has been verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results for a 2 MW DFIG wind turbine system and by experimental results for a small-scale wind turbine simulator.

인공위성 고도계 자료로 추정한 동해 표층해류와 공간분포 변동성 (Satellite-altimeter-derived East Sea Surface Currents: Estimation, Description and Variability Pattern)

  • 이 연구는 인공위성 고도계로 관측한 해수면 높이 자료를 이용하여 동해 표층해류를 생산하고, 동해 전체 영역에 대하여 동시성 있는 표층해류 분포를 동해 해류 정보 사용자에게 제공하기 위한 최초의 시도이다. 동해 전 영역에서 인공위성 고도계와 연안 조위관측소의 해수면 높이 자료를 동시에 얻을 수 있으므로 준실시간으로 넓은 해역에 대하여 동시성 있는 표층 지형류의 산출이 가능하다. 산출된 동해 표층 지형류로부터 주요 해류의 위치와 세기 그리고 중규모 이상의 소용돌이 발달 양상을 살펴볼 수 있다. 따라서 이들 해류의 이름과 평균적인 위치를 알 수 있도록 동해 해양지명에 대한 명칭과 위치를 기술하고, 개념적인 해류도를 제시하였다. 동해 해류정보가 실제 실용화될 수 있도록 인공위성 고도계 자료를 이용하여 산출한 지형류의 월 계절 연도별 해류 분포 예를 들고, 각 해류 분포를 설명하였다. 또한 시 공간적으로 변화하는 동해 표층해류 분포 형태를 객관적으로 분류하기 위하여 16년(1993~2008년)간의 표층해류 자료를 경험직교함수(Empirical Orthogonal Function, EOF)를 이용하여 분석하였다. EOF분석 제1모드(mode)는 주로 한국 동해안을 따라 북쪽으로 흐르는 동한난류와 야마도분지 남서부 시계방향 순환의 강화 또는 약화를 나타냈다. 제2모드는 동한난류가 동해 남부를 가로지르며 사행하는 정도를 나타냈으며, 해류 사행의 파장은 약 300 km이었다. 제1모드와 제2모드가 모두 해류의 연간 변동성을 나타냈으며, 제1모드와 제2모드의 시간계수에 따라 동해 표층해류 분포를 관성 경계류 패턴(pattern), 대마난류 패턴, 사행 패턴, 외해분지류 패턴으로 분류할 수 있다.

서안경계류 역학을 이해하기 위한 실험 장치 및 방법 개발 (Development of Apparatus and Methods for Understanding the Dynamics of the Western Boundary Current)

  • 서안경계류의 발생 역학을 이해하기 위하여 간단한 실험 장치와 방법을 개발하였다. 위도에 따른 코리올리 파라미터의 변화(즉 베타효과)를 구현하기 위하여 바닥이 경사진 반 시계 방향으로 회전하는 수조를 이용하였다. 중위도 해양에 작용하는 바람 응력은 수조 상부에서 시계 방향으로 회전하는 원판으로 대신하였다. 수조 바닥의 형태와 수조의 회전 유무의 조합으로 구성된 4가지 실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 베타효과가 포함된 실험에서 서안경계류와 유사한 흐름과 스베드럽 영역을 볼 수 있었다. 반면에, 베타효과 없이 일정한 코리올리 힘만 있을 때는 수조 속의 물은 관성류의 특징을 나타냈다. 우리는 또한 회전 유체가 굳어진 것처럼 변한다는 테일러-프라우드만 효과를 확인 하였다. 이 연구에서 개발된 장치와 방법은 베타효과에 의한 서안경계류를 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 것으로 기대한다.

CANDU6 감속재 온도분포 계산을 위한 CFD 해석모델의 타당성 검토 (Validation of a CFD Analysis Model for the Calculation of CANDU6 Moderator Temperature Distribution)

  • A validation of a 3D CFD model for predicting local subcooling of moderator in the vicinity of calandria tubes in a CANDU reactor is performed. The small scale moderator experiments performed at Sheridan Park Experimental Laboratory(SPEL) in Ontario, Canada[1] is used for the validation. Also a comparison is made between previous CFD analyses based on 2DMOTH and PHOENICS, and the current model analysis for the same SPEL experiment. For the current model, a set of grid structures for the same geometry as the experimental test section is generated and the momentum, heat and continuity equations are solved by CFX-4.3, a CFD code developed by AEA technology. The matrix of calandria tubes is simplified by the porous media approach. The standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model associated with logarithmic wall treatment and SIMPLEC algorithm on the body fitted grid are used and buoyancy effects are accounted for by the Boussinesq approximation. For the test conditions simulated in this study, the flow pattern identified is a buoyancy-dominated flow, which is generated by the interaction between the dominant buoyancy force by heating and inertial momentum forces by the inlet jets. As a result, the current CFD moderator analysis model predicts the moderator temperature reasonably, and the maximum error against the experimental data is kept at less than $2.0^{\circ}C$ over the whole domain. The simulated velocity field matches with the visualization of SPEL experiments quite well.
