To evaluate the potential association between the GSTP1 genotype and the development of breast cancer, a hospital based case-control study was conducted on Korean women. The study population consisted of 171 histologically confirmed incident breast cancer cases and 171 age-matched controls with no present or previous history of cancer. PCR-RFLP was used for the GSTP1 genotyping and statistical evaluations were performed using an unconditional logistic regression model. Postmenopausal women with the GSTP1 Val allele were found to have a reduced risk of breast cancer (OR = 0.3, 95% CI = 0.10 - 0.74). A significant interaction was observed between the GSTP1 genotype and alcohol consumption (p for interaction = 0.01); compared with never-drinking women with Ile/Ile genotype, ever-drinking women with the GSTP1 Val allele had almost a three-fold risk of breast cancer (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.05-7.85), whereas never-drinking women with Val allele had half this risk (OR = 0.5, 95% CI = 0.27-0.93). Our findings suggest that the GSTP1 polymorphism influences individual susceptibility to breast cancer in the Korean women and this effect may be modified by alcohol consumption.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate the variables that lead consumers to visit traditional markets and buy market goods. Thus, the current research examined the relationship between satisfaction and return intention as among the factors influencing loyalty. Research design, data, and methodology - This study was conducted to examine the effects of the perceived level of factors on loyalty and how it influenced consumers' visits to traditional markets in 125 adult adolescents and women living in Mok-po area. The results of the questionnaire were obtained. The statistical data of the questionnaire were verified by SPSS. Results - In this study, consumers' perception level of eight loyalty factors can be perceived by the traditional Korean market. The empirical analysis is summarized as follows. First, by selecting five representative variables influencing intention to return to traditional markets, Mok-po area consumers were affected by the intention to revisit according to the intensity of recognition level among these variables. Second, the higher the perceived level of product price, quality of access (accessibility) among the factors that consumers perceive as important factors in visiting traditional markets were heightened. Third, Mokpo residents are aware of the main important factors of visiting the market such as receiving a friendly atmosphere (image) about traditional market, market environment (hygiene and cleanliness), connection with the local economy, and customer service such as kindness, refund and return. These loyalty factors did not affect consumers' intention to revisit. In other words, image, environment, regional economic linkage, and these factors did not have a positive effect on revisit intention. Conclusions - The empirical analysis of this study suggests that factors that directly affect loyalty among the key factors that play a major role in visiting traditional markets should be identified and developed as loyalty factors. It is necessary to identify the key factors influencing the satisfaction and loyalty of traditional market users, and operate a system that systematically and comprehensively manages and evaluates them. In order to do this, the government, the local governments, and related organizations should regularly conduct loyalty and satisfaction surveys on visa recognition levels and establish strategies for dramatic improvement measures.
Charcoal $tube/CS_2$ method are more popularly used than any other in the measurement of the working environment for the exposure evaluation of organic solvent, but it is some weak points that the lower accuracy can be obtained on the polar materials and within the range of the low concentration. Thus solvent desorption method has been developed to make accuracy higher and to overcome some weak points. However, because of high price of adsorption tube for thermal desorption and the short of study on its application to the working environment, it is not popularly used in the domestic industrial hygiene fields. This dissertation aims to develop thermal desorption and adsorption tubes for measuring organic solvents in the working environment, by comparing and analyzing breakthrough condition and adsorption capacity with ACF. Specific surface area of ACF used in this study is wider than the one of AC and micropore of ACF related with adsorption has been developed, and adsorption velocity and adsorption amount are very excellent by linking a pore of surface and an inside well into micropore. 1. Result of analysis on physical characteristics of adsorbent, the specific surface area of ACF was 1.3 times higher than that of AC. Distribution ratio of micropore related to adsorption was 94% on ACF and AC. Result of SEM, micropore of the AC is opened to the surface. In contrast, ACF shows that extremely fast adsorption speed. Because of micropore are exposed on the surface and penetrate through each other. 2. Breakthrough characteristics of adsorbents was not different from slop of breakthrough curve. The effluent concentration reaches 10% of initial concentration($C_{out}/C_{in}=0.1$, break point) of ACF was 30~316min longer than that of AC. Therefore, the adsorption capacities of ACF was 1.1~4.6 times higher than that of AC. ACF can be used as a proper adsorbent for measurement of organic solvent.

Fishery and shipping industry are ones of the important industries for the Republic of Korea, and the education of competent technicians is a essential-important factor for the further development in these fields. To this end, curriculum for the fisheries and/or merchant marine high schools are rearranged to meet the industrial needs and social change. In this study, the existing goal of education is rearranged inclusively to meet the further development and the curriculum to realize the goal. The departments are reorganized into nine ones by establishing new two. They are Department of Refrigeration Mechanical Engineering and of Automated-ship Operation. Four departments of existing seven-Department of Fish Aquaculture, of Fish Processing, of Marine Engine and of Marine Communication-are renamed into Department of Aquaculture, of Food Processing, of Power Mechanical Engineering and of Electronic Communication respectively. The remaining three departments- Department of Fishing Technology, of Self-managing Fisheries and of Navigation-are unchanged. The specialized subjects are revised as follows; (1) The existing seven subjects especially prepared for the fisheries and/or merchant marine high schools are changed into the common subjects for all the vocational high schools. They are Food Science, Food Hygiene, Food Processing Machinery, Air-conditioning Facilities, Welding and Piping, Communication Law and Introduction to Computer. (2) Two subjects are newly established: Refrigeration Mechanical Engineering and Automated-ship Operation. (3) Four subjects are disused : Sea Training, Fisheries Law, Canned Food and Practice in Communication. (4) Introduction to ship, to Marine Engine and to Marine Communication are merged into Introduction to ship. (5) The compulsory major subject is fixed as Introduction to Fisheries for the fisheries high schools and Introduction to shipping Industry for the merchant marine high schools.
Nanotechnology is emerging as one of the key technologies of the 21 st century and is expected to enable one to broaden the applicability across a wide range of sectors that can benefit public and improve industrial competitiveness. Already, consumer products containing nanomaterials are available in markets including coatings, computers, clothing, cosmetics, sports equipment and medical devices. Recently, Institute of Occupational Medicine in UK reported an occupational hygiene review for nanoparticles in the viewpoint of nanotoxicity. They reported that the exposure control is very important issues in workplace for exposure assessment, but no proper methods are available to measure the extent of exposures to nanoparticles in the workplace. Therefore, for the estimation of exposure of nanomaterials, we have to approach the material-balance methodology, which similarly carried out in TRI (toxic release inventory) for hazardous chemicals. In order to use this methodology, the exposure source of nanomaterials should be determined firstly. Therefore, herein we investigated the main sources and processes for the exposure to nanomaterals by conducting the survey. The results could be used to define and assess nanohazard sources.
Occupational Dentistry was introduced in Korea about 70 years ago. During the colonial period occupied by Japan till 1945, there were few documents about industrial dentistry, furthermore most cases of occupational diseases and accidents might have been concealed intentionally by the colonial government. After being an independent country, several dentists made efforts to set up 'Preventive Dentistry for Workers' performing specific oral health surveys, even though which were stopped by Korean War. In 1960s' and 1970s', some investigations of oral status were carried out intermittently for specific small groups;white-collar workers, mentally retarded person, buddhist monks and crews of ocean liners. At the same time there was important study in Korean history of occupational dentistry, which was 'a comparison of the oral hygiene conditions in the female workers of a spinning factory at intervals of 30 years.' In 1980s', young researchers began to give attention to erosion of the teeth due to sulphuric acid in the acid-related industry and dental caries due to sugar and flour in the sweets industry. After being democratic labor union movement activated in 1987, hidden and suppressed occupational diseases under the military dictatorship were exposed and flushed in the newspapers. It was shocking for all people that 15-year old boy had been dead due to mercury intoxication after 3-month employment in 1988. In 1990s', the activity for studying oral status of workers in their workplaces was launched and 'Occupational Accidents and Diseases in Oral and Maxillofacial Field' was published. And also The Korean Association of Occupationl Dentistry was established. Oral health examination of workers at the time of employment and of workers exposed to 5 special chemicals at the time of routine special health examination was adopted in 1992, and epocally oral health examination was also included in periodic routine examination of workers' health in 1995. So, occupational dentistry in Korea should cope with the changing needs of working environment and the altering scheme of health examination.
This study is aimed at finding policy directions for Korean fisheries and fishing villages by using Delphi method for fisheries experts. Fisheries experts have highly evaluated the achievements of fostering aquaculture industry, seafood export support measures, and natural disasters relief and recovery arrangements among the policies promoted as so far. And it was recognized that policies such as fishery resources management, creation and recovery of fishery resources, improvement hygiene and seafood safety, and provision young fishermen with training and capacity building will be important. Future megatrends, for example changes in food consumption pattern, climate change, and demographic structure changes are expected to have a significant impact on fisheries and fishing villages. The Delphi survey indicates that the most important policy objective is to secure a stable fisheries production. In other words, fisheries policy in the future should be aimed at suppling sustainable seafood for popular consumption. Finding strategies and action plans that can achieve this goal will be an important policy issue. In conclusion, it is necessary that a number of fundamental researches carry out in Korea, which can lead to finding out a multifunctionality of fisheries and fishing village. In addition, it is important to expand the scope of fisheries policy, which can consider not only the fisheries producers but also seafood consumer's and young fishermen perspectives. Furthermore, it recommends that fishery policy needs to include fishery related industry as well as application of 4th industrial revolution technology to fishery.
This study conducted a survey from September 5 to 30, 2020 targeting 415 workers participating in regional self-sufficiency center programs in four locations in Daejeon and Daegu. The purpose of the study was to examine oral symptoms of the study subjects and the effects if psychological anxiety parameters on oral health and quality of life. As a result of the study, oral dryness, temporomandibular joint symptoms, and periodontitis all had a significant effect on oral health and quality of life, and psychological anxiety factors had a partial mediating effect. The subjective oral symptom problems led to a negative psychological state, which could further impair the quality of life. In the future, the results of this study can be used as basic data for expanding psychological counseling programs for self-supporting workers and improving oral health policies for regular oral health education.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to provide baseline data for the assessment of exposure to indium and to prevent adverse health effects among workers engaged in the electronics and related industries in Republic of Korea. Methods: Total (n = 369) and respirable (n = 384) indium concentrations were monitored using personal air sampling in workers at the following 19 workplaces: six sputtering target manufacturing companies, four manufacturing companies of panel displays, two companies engaged in cleaning of sputtering components, two companies dedicated to the cleaning of sputtering target, and five indium recycling companies. Results: The level of exposure to total indium ranged from 0.9 to 609.3 ㎍/m3 for the sputtering target companies; from 0.2 to 2,782.0 ㎍/m3 for the panel display companies and from 0.5 to 2,089.9 ㎍/m3 for the indium recycling companies. The level of exposure to respirable indium was in the range of 0.02 to 448.6 ㎍/m3 for the sputtering target companies; 0.01 to 419.5 ㎍/m3 for the panel display companies; and 0.5 to 436.3 ㎍/m3 for the indium recycling companies. The indium recycling companies had the most samples exceeding the exposure standard for indium, followed by sputtering target companies and panel display companies. Conclusions: The main finding from this exposure assessment is that many workers who handle indium compounds in the electronics industry are exposed to indium levels that exceed the exposure standards for indium. Hence, it is necessary to continuously monitor the indium exposure of this workforce and take measures to reduce its exposure levels.
Background: Benzalkonium chloride (BKC) has been extensively used as a preservative in industrial products and in hygiene, medical, and cosmetic applications. Humidifier disinfectant (HD) products containing BKC have been used in South Korea. Objectives: This study was aimed to review types of products containing BKC, to summarize the regulations in the US, EU, Japan, and South Korea, and to review the health effects associated with the use of HD. Methods: We reviewed and summarized documents which were searched through PubMed and Google Scholar with the key words: BKC and asthma/contact dermatitis, humidifier disinfectant-associated lung injury (HDLI), and more. Results: Regulations in most countries including South Korea do not allow its use as disinfectants in spray-type of products for medicine, cosmetics, and household products. Two types of HD containing BKC (800~1,270 ppm) were marketed in South Korea from 1996~2003. Health effects reported from people who used products containing BKC were allergic contact dermatitis, erythema, and respiratory disease, including asthma. Two people who responded as HD users containing BKC only were confirmed to have developed asthma. HD-associated lung injury (HDLI) was reported by consumers who used both HD containing polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) and HD containing BKC. Conclusions: In conclusion, the use of BKC as a biocide has to be controlled considering the route and pattern of exposure. Products containing BKC as preservatives were reviewed with exposure routes and sites in the human body such as skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract. HD containing BKC was clinically evaluated to be associated with asthma.
