  • In the powder compact melting technique, proper precursor fabrication is very important because density distribution after foaming and foamability are determined during precursor fabrication process. The fabrication of the precursor has to be performed very carefully because any residual porosity or other defects will lead to poor results in further processing. In order to evaluate the effect of the compaction parameters on the kinetics of the foaming process, a series of experiments were performed. In this study, aluminium foams with a closed cell structure were fabricated by using both the powder compact method and the induction heating process. A proper induction coil was designed to obtain a uniform temperature distribution over the entire cross sectional area of precursor. To establish the foamable precursor fabrication conditions, effects of process parameters such as the titanium hydride content (0.3∼1.5 wt.%), pressing pressure of the foamable precursor (50∼150kN) on the pore morphology were investigated.

  • Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Induction heating is an efficient way to heat material by means of an electric current that is caused to flow through the material or its container by electromagnetic induction. It has various applications such as heat treatment, brazing, welding, melting, and mold heating. The present study covers an experimental investigation of induction heating in order to rapidly raise the mold temperature. It is observed that the mold surface temperature is raised up to $200^{\circ}C$ in 2 seconds. This induction heating is applied to injection molding of a flexspline for a plastic harmonic drive, which has difficulty in cavity filling because its minimum thickness is only 0.35 mm. The induction heating is then successfully implemented on this ultra-thin wall molding by raising the mold surface temperature around the glass-transition temperature of the molding material.

  • In this study, STS316L produced by a double-melting process involving vacuum induction melting (VIM) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR) was subjected to extrusion and drawing to form a tube and was subsequently electrolytic polished (EP). The grain size of the obtained STS316L without EP was approximately 55 ㎛, with no difference found after EP. The thickness of the EP layer was measured by AES and TEM, showing values of approximately 10 nm and 15 nm, respectively. After EP, the Cr/Fe and CrO/FeO ratios of the passive layer increased from 1.48 to 1.62 and from 2.15 to 2.26, respectively, while the surface roughness decreased significantly from 0.255 to 0.024 ㎛. Consequently, the corrosion rate decreased in both NaCl and HCl solutions after the EP process. Additionally, the amounts of eluted Cr and Fe ions were reduced from 1.2 to 0.8 ppb and 10.3 to 0.8 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, polarization tests revealed that STS316L treated with EP required a lower current density to reach a passive state, indicating that corrosion behavior was retarded.

  • Many processing times for fabricating complex shaped parts by near net shape process such as thixoforming or semi-solid forming, are required due to the time for die design, induction heating and forming process. Therefore, for the thixoforming process, multi-capacity induction heating process is very important due to the reduction of the processing time and cost. It is indispensable to adopt a power-time heating pattern which manages to conciliate complete eutectic melting at the core with limited overheating at the periphery. The total reheating time is thus dependent on billet diameter; in inches$(pm20%)$. Typically, high frequency is used for the rapid reheating of the billet to the eutectic temperature range and low frequency for the remelting of the desired fraction of liquid and for the radial homogeneization of the liquid fraction. So in this study, the multi-capacity induction heating conditions of ALTHIX 86s alloy to reduce the processing time and cost would be proposed. The suitability of multi-capacity induction heating conditions would be verified through the comparison to Garat's data.

  • This paper reports the effect of a refractory crucible type on the microstructure of duplex stainless steel (DSS) cast with the addition of gadolinium using air-induction melting. Grade 4A DSSs with 1 wt% of gadolinium (Gd) were fabricated in various crucibles including alumina ($Al_2O_3$), magnesia (MgO), calcia (CaO) coated with yttria ($Y_2O_3$) and graphite. The standard free energies of the formation of calcium and yttrium oxide were lower than those of gadolinium oxide and other crucible elements based oxide. The yield of Gd in DSS using $Al_2O_3$, MgO, CaO-coated $Y_2O_3$ and graphite was 5, 19, 83 and 96%, respectively. As Gd yield increased, the amount of Gd-based inclusions increased, the size of the inclusions were reduced, and the inclusions became evenly distributed.

  • Currently, there is a need for the development of an advanced new technology for Low-and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste (LILW) treatment from nuclear power plants. The vitrification and melting technology by the use of the electrical equipments such as induction heater and plasma torch based furnace, along with off-gas treatment are considered as the most promising one of the LILW treatment technology since they can produce a very stable waste forms as well as considerably large volume reduction, which is a world-wide trend to apply for radioactive waste treatment. Korea Electric Power Research Institute(KEPRI) has already completed a feasibility study on LILW treatment and conceptual system design of a demonstration plant to be constructed. For this research, KEPRI selected a cold crucible melter(CCM) for the vitrification of combustible waste, and plasma torch based furnace(PT) for the melting of noncombustible waste, along with off-gas treatment for the volatile radioisotopes such as cesium.

  • Semi-solid forming of the high melting point alloys such as steel is a promising near-net shape forming process for decreasing manufacturing costs and increasing the quality of the final products. This paper presents the microstructure characteristics of SKH51 (high speed tool steel) during heating and holding in the mushy zone between $1233^{\circ}C$ and $1453^{\circ}C$, which has been measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results of heating/holding experiments showed that the grain size and the liquid fraction increased gradually with temperature up to $1350^{\circ}C$. The drastic grain growth occurred at heating above $1380^{\circ}C$. The strain-induced melt-activated (SIMA) process has been applied to obtain globular grains in the billet materials. Working by mechanical upsetting and successive heating of SKH51 into the temperatures in the mushy zone resulted in globular grains due to recrystallization and partial melting.

  • Iron and slag were prepared by melting mixed industrial wastes in an induction furnace. The wastes were steel can, limestone sludge, waste foundry sand, coal fly ash, and glasses. The effects of their mixing ratio on the charactenstics of the meltcd slag were investigated. The wastes were melted to slag under the constant basicity of 1.2. It was found that the major phases of the slag were P-C,S and C,AS and then ratio was determined by the mixing ratio af waste materials. The recovery of iron was about 93-95%. The feasibility of using the slag as the aggregate was confirmed by thc elution and campression tests.

  • The magnetic properties and crystal structures of $Sm_yGd_{2-y}Fe_{17-x}Si_x$ alloys ($0\leq\;x\leq2\;and\;y=0\~1.67$) have been investigated using x-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The $Sm_yGd_{2-y}Fe_{17-x}Si_x$ specimens were crystallized to the rhombohedral $Th_2Zn_{17}-structure$ with less than $5mol\%$ of impurities. The unit cells of the mixed rare-earth samples are smaller than those of $Sm_2Fe_{17}\;and\;Gd_2Fe_{17}.$ For example, the $T_c\;of\;SmGdFe_{17}\;(255^{\circ}C)$ is approximately 160 and $800^{\circ}C)$ higher than that of $Sm_2Fe_{17}\;and\;Gd_2Fe_{17},$ respectively. The $T_cs$ measured for $Sm_yGd_{2-y}Fe_{17-x}Si_x$ samples, 280 to $290^{\circ}C)$, are among the highest values observed for a $R_2Fe_{17-x}M_x$ intermetallic where M is a substituent other than cobalt.
