  • The objective of this study was to select the right species among Agastache in the family Lamiaceae as the result of growth analysis and functional substance analysis. Among 22 species of Agastache, five species (Agastache cana, Agastache foeniculum, Agastache rugosa 'Spike Blue', Agastache rugosa 'Spike Snow', Agastache rupestris) were selected by referring to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s plant hardiness zone area and Korea's one based on USDAs. These plants were cultured at 24 ± 1℃ and 18 ± 1℃ (day and night temperatures, respectively) and 65 ~ 75% relative humidity in a hydroponic culture system for 4 weeks. In terms of growth analysis experiment, stem length, root length, leaf width, leaf area, leaf number, SPAD value, and fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots were measured. The results showed that A. rugosa SS and A. rugosa SB have a higher overall balance value than other species. When compared functional substance value (rosmarinic acid, tilianin, and acacetin) of five species, A. rugosa SS and A. rugosa SB are significantly higher than other species in Agastache. It seems to be directly proportional to the growth analysis results. When considering the growth and functional substance part comprehensively, A. rugosa SS and A. rugosa SB are the most optimal high-value species among Agastache.

  • To establish an indoor-rearing system for the Large Copper butterfly, $Lycaena$ $dispar$ and the Small Copper butterfly, $Lycaena$ $phlaeas$, the effect of temperature, photoperiod and host plants on larval development was investigated. The larvae of $Lycaena$ $dispar$ fed on $Rumex$ $crispus$, whereas the larvae of $Lycaena$ $phlaeas$ ate both $Rumex$ $crispus$ and $Rumex$ $acetosa$. The duration of the larval period of $Lycaena$ $dispar$ was 13.8 days on $R.$ $crispus$ and that, of $Lycaena$ $phlaeas$ was 15.9 days and 15.2 days on $R.$ $acetosa$ and $R.$ $crispus$ respectively. Laboratory experiments show that the Large Copper larvae are able to feed on other $Rumex$ species without harming their overall survival and can utilize these alternative host plants at least as efficiently as their natural host plant. This result suggests that plant chemistry is not responsible for their lack of utilization of the alternative host plants in the wild. Host plant choice by ovipositing females was measured with the two alternative hosts. $Lycaena$ $dispar$ preferred $R.$ $crispus$ to $R.$ $acetosa$, wheareas $Lycaena$ $phlaeas$ preferred $R.$ $acetosa$ to $R.$ $crispus$. Temperature has been proposed as an important determinant of developmental rate, lifespan and mortality in invertebrates. As temperature increased, length of the developmental period gradually decreased. The developmental period of the Large Copper larvae was 11.0 days and 28.5 days at $30^{\circ}C$ and $17.5^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The insecticidal activities of 27 different commercial products with environmentally friendly organic material(EFOM) against Scotinophara lurida, a major rice pest, were evaluated in the laboratory using spraying methods on plants and insects. Seven plant-derived organic farming materials (EFOM-8, -10, -12, -13, -19, -20, and -26) with high insecticidal effects when sprayed directly on the insect's body rather than on the plant were selected. In the indoor rice pot test, all 7 EFOMs showed an insecticidal rate of over 73.3% under flooding conditions. Notably, EFOM-13 and EFOM-20 demonstrated much higher insecticidal rates, ranging from 1.5 to 1.8 times, in flooding conditions compared to drained conditions. In the semi-paddy field test, EFOM-10 (80% garlic extract), EFOM-13 (62% neem extract), and EFOM-26 (70% sophora extract+28% ethyl alcohol+2% pyrethrum extract) exhibited a higher control value of 88.9% in the irrigated paddy on the 7th day, surpassing the control values in the drained paddy by 1.4 to 1.9 times. The control value in the irrigated rice paddy field sprayed with EFOM-10 reached 86.2% on the 7th day, which was 1.4 times higher than 61.9% in the drained paddy. Taken together, the findings suggest that direct contact of the insect's body with sufficient amounts of spray solution and the maintenance of paddy irrigation can enhance the controlling effect of EFOMs. These findings will be valuable in developing an optimal S. lurida control strategy for application in rice paddy fields in the near future.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes in plant state, chlorophyll, free amino acids and vitamin C content of soybean sprouts during circulation periods. The experiment was carried out under the indoor natural light and complete darkness at $20^{\circ}C$. The results are summarized as follows; Soybean sprout was grown about one cm in the darkness for 7 or 24 hours, but under the indoor natural light it was not grown. Weight was decreased both in the darkness and under the light. In the darkness the color of sprouts were not changed, but under the light the color was changed in 7 or 24 hours. Chlorophyll contents was increased rapidly by light in the cotyledon. Chlorophyll formation brought about loss not only in amino acids but also porphyrins, but it did not in the amino acids of hypocotyl. The kinds of amino acids being brought about loss under the light were cystine, aspartic acid, serine, histidine and glycine. The 22$\sim$27% of vitamin C was lost in cotyledon by 7 hours exposured light and in hypocotyl after 5 hours.

  • The study was conducted to develop the suitable abalone's diets for the indoor tank culture. The young abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino sized ca. 20, 30 and 40 nun in shell length were fed three different diets, dried sea mustard Undaria pinnatifida HARVEY (control), artificial diet and terrestrial plants e. g. Chinese cabbage and Perilla leaf for 2 years. The growth rate of abalones fed an artificial diet was slightly higher than that of abalones from the control. However, the growth rate of abalones from terrestrial plants was significantly lower than that of abalones fed a control or an artificial diet (P< 0.05). The daily feeding rate of young abalones from terrestrial plants was slightly higher than that of abalones from the control. While, that of abalones from an artificial diet was approximately $30\%$ of that of abalones from a control or a terrestrial plants diet. The feed efficiency of abalone from artificail diet was higher than that of abalones from a control or a terrestrial plants diet, and the smaller size of young abalone showed the higher the feed efficiency. The EFA index values ${{\sum}n9/(20:4n6+20:5n3+22:6n3}$ of the dried sea mustard and the artificial diet were 1.26 and 3.64, respectively. These values were favorable, but the value of terrestrial plant, Perilla leaf was 127.00 indicating poor EFA index for normal growth of abalone.

  • Compaction of backfill material of Underground power lines is difficult, especially under pipeline. so it could cause structural problem because of low compaction efficiency. So various methods have been taken to solve the problem and one of them is CLSM(Controled low-strength material accelerated flow ability). But In other countries, these are already in progress for a long time to research and development and recently on practical steps. But, in our country, study for only general structures, not for underground power line structure that is being constructed at night rapidly. In this study, we performed property tests and indoor & outdoor test (3 cases). The tests showed flow ability reached at the limit construction(160 mm) flowability by 9 to 15 minute after starting to mix, and construction buoyant is lowering after placing CLSM by 70 % of theoretical buoyant that is calculated by unit weight of material. In this paper, we performed indoor tests and outdoor tests to estimate mechanical properties and to suggest construction method(using batch plant, setting spacer at 1.8 m and placing at 2m) for CLSM that using surplus soil. And the test showed good results for construction quality, workability and structure safety.

  • The ovipositional characteristics of the endangered species Prosopocoilus astacoides blanchardi was investigated for indoor mass-rearing. This insect required 3 weeks or more for mating after emergence when introduced at the 1:1 ratio of male to female. Among temperatures studied at 16, 20, 24, 28, and 32℃, the pre-ovipositional period of P. astacoides blanchardi was longest at 16℃ with an average of 109 days after emergence, while it was shortest at 32℃ with an average of 59.4 days. The number of eggs laid at 24℃ was highest with an average of 40.6 per female. The average lifespan of adults at 16℃ was 208.8 days for males and 263.9 days for females, while at 32℃ 96.1 days for males and 130.3 days for females. The number of laid eggs was dependent on insect rearing chamber size. The oviposition-trees did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect the number of laid eggs and ovipositional period. The results of this study could be used as rearing data for the restoration and mass propagation of the endangered species P. astacoides blanchardi.

  • This study aimed to investigate the influence of anions in the air on the purification of fine dust (PM10 and PM2.5) and to evaluate the effects of plants on the generation of anions in the air and the purification of fine dust. Subsequently, the fine dust reduction models were compared according to each factor and plant volume. The characteristics of anion generation by each factor were observed to be in the order of Type N.I (negative ion generator; 204,133.33 ea/cm3) > Type P30 (plant vol. 30%; 362.55 ea/cm3) > Type C (control; 46.22 ea/cm3), indicating that the amount of anion generation in the anion generator treatment group and the plant arrangement group were approximately 4,417 times and 7 times higher, respectively, than that in the untreated group. Consequently, the fine dust reduction characteristics by anion generation source showed that for PM10, Type NI had a purification efficiency 2.52 times higher than Type C, and Type P30 was 1.46 times higher, while for PM2.5, Type NI had a purification efficiency 2.26 times higher than Type C, and Type P30 was 1.31 times higher. The efficiency of fine dust purification by plant volume was in the order of Type P20 (84.60 minutes) > Type P30 (106.50 minutes) = Type P25 (115.50 minutes) = Type P15 (117.60 minutes) > Type P5 (125.25 minutes) = Type P10 (129.75 minutes), and for ultrafine dust, Type P20 (104.00 minutes) > Type P30 (133.20 minutes) = Type P25 (144.00 minutes) = Type P15 (147.60 minutes) > Type P5 (161.25 minutes) = Type P10 (168.00 minutes). Thus, a quantitative analysis of the anions and plants for purifying fine dust and suggested matters to be considered for future green space planning and plant planting considering fine dust purification.

  • Air quality in the livestock waste compost pilot plant at the Colligate Livestock Station was assessed to quantity the emissions of aerial contaminants and evaluate the degree of correlation between them for different operation strategies; with the ventilation types and agitation of compost pile, in this study. The parameters analyzed to reflect the level of air quality in the livestock waste compost pilot plant were the gaseous contaminants; ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration, the particulate contaminants; inhalable dust and respirable dust, and the biological contaminants; total airborne bacteria and fungi. The mean concentrations of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration in the compost pilot plant without agitation were 2.45ppm, 19.96ppb, and 15.8 when it was naturally ventilated, and 7.61ppm, 31.36ppb, and 30.2 when mechanically ventilated. Those with agitation were 5.50ppm, 14.69ppb, and 46.4 when naturally ventilated, and 30.12ppm, 39.91ppb, and 205.5 when mechanically ventilated. The mean concentrations of inhalable and respirable dust in the compost pilot plant without agitation were 368.6${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 96.0${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with natural ventilation, and 283.9${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 119.5${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with mechanical ventilation. They were also observed with agitation to 208.7${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 139.8${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with natural ventilation, and 209.2${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 131.7${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with mechanical ventilation. Averaged concentrations of total airborne bacteria and fungi in the compost pilot plant without agitation were observed to 28,673cfu/$m^3$ and 22,507cfu/$m^3$ with natural ventilation, and 7,462cfu/$m^3$ and 3,228cfu/$m^3$ with mechanical ventilation. They were also observed with agitation to 19,592cfu/$m^3$ and 26,376cfu/$m^3$ with the natural ventilation, and 18,645cfu/$m^3$ and 24,581cfu/$m^3$ with the mechanical ventilation. It showed that the emission rates of gaseous pollutants, such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration, in the compost pilot plant operated with the mechanical ventilation and with the agitation of compost pile were higher than those with the natural ventilation and without the agitation. While the concentrations of inhalable dust and total airborne bacteria in the compost pilot plant with the natural ventilation and with the agitation, the concentrations of respirable dust and total airborne fungi in the compost pilot plant with the mechanical ventilation and agitation were higher than those with the natural ventilation and without the agitation of compost pile. It was statistically proved that indoor temperature and relative humidity affected the release of particulates and biological pollutants, and ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were believed primary malodorous compounds emitted from the compost pilot plant.
