Azolla is a genus of small aquatic ferns native to Asia, Africa, and America. Azolla is potentially significant as a nitrogen source in agriculture, particularly in conjunction with rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. In addition, Azolla may either control weeds or act as a weed depending on management; therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of Azolla incorporation on weed (e.g., Monochoria vaginalis, Rotala indica, Aeschynomene indica, and Cyperus amuricus) control and its other benefits during rice cultivation. The effects of Azolla on weed emergence were evaluated based on plot area coverage by the Azolla mat, which appears as a green sheet over water, and the rate of weed emergence in paddy field. Weed occurrence was investigated 40 days after Azolla inoculation. Soil samples from the experimental plots were collected following harvest in 2014-2015, and analyzed. Moreover, rice growth, yield, and grain quality were measured. Azolla suppressed weed growth by 72%. Azolla mat incorporation in rice fields suppressed weed growth by over 60%. In addition, Azolla promoted nitrogen fixation. Compared with nitrogen management using chemical fertilizers, Azolla incorporation showed the potential for various positive effects, including the improvement of soil fertility by increasing total nitrogen, and organic matter content. Rice grown with Azolla maintained its yield without additional herbicide treatment. Moreover, the palatability of cooked rice was better when grown with Azolla.
Carbonized wheat(Triticum aestivum), barley(Horudeum vulgare) and rice (Oryza sativa) grams were excavated at the AD 3C. old site in Nook-Do Kyungsang-South province. By the sieve floating method 180 grains of wheat, 4 grains of barley and 6 grains of ric
The change of soluble protein components in leaf discoloration of rice plant was investigated in the Growth Cabinet with various temperature conditions. The ratio between high molecular soluble protein and low molecular soluble protein was high under high temperature condition, while low under low temperature condition, and also lower in Indica type varieties than Japonica type variety.
This experiment was carried out to obtain some imformations about the ecological variations of the heading time of the newly breeded Indica x Japonica varieties/pedigrees according to the seasonal changes of the seeding date. day length and temperature. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) At all varieties. days to heading showed a straight reduction according as the seeding time was delayed. 2) At the group of Japonica varieties. the days to heading of early maturing varieties were much shortened and that of medium or late maturing varieties were little or not shortened under high temperature condition but at the group of Indica ${\times}$ Japonica va rieties/pedigrees. days to heading were significantly elongated under high temerature condition. 3) At the group of Japonica varieties. the effect of the short day condition on the days to heading was significantly high at the medium and the late maturing varieties than at the early maturing varieties. however. the short day effect on the reduction of days to heading was not related with the earlyness of each varieties at the group of Indica ${\times}$ Japonica varieties/pedigrees. 4) Days to heading of all varieties under the high temperature condition were longer than that under the ordinary culture. On the other hand, the days to heading of Japonica varieties under the short day treatment were shorter than the days to heading of ordinary culture but at the group of Indica x Japonica varieties/pedigrees. the days to heading under the short day treatment were longer than ordinary culture. 5) At both varieties groups. the days to heading at each seeding time were significantly correlated with days to heading at ordinary cultivation. fl) At the group of Japonica varieties. relatively high correlation(p=0.1) was recognized between the days to heading by delay of seeding time, but at the group of Indica ${\times}$ Japonicava rieties/pedigrees, correlation between the ordinary heading date and the shortening rate of days to heading was very low.
The contents of free amino acids in deembryod brown rice of two varieties were investigated by amino acid autoanalizer in relation to specific gravity grade. The analytical methods of free amino acid were also discussed. 1) The lower the specific gravity of the unhulled rice the higher the content of total free amino acids in the deembryod brown rice, and the similar trend appears to hold on each amino acids. 2) Main free amino acids were serine+asparagine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, alanine and valine, and maximum values of them were 7.3, 5.1, 4.0, 3.4, 0.9mg/100g rice, respectively. They consist about 85% of total free amino acids in most cases. 3) The contents of soluble nitrogen and free amino acids appear to be lower in high protein variety (IR 667) than in low protein variety (Jinhung). The percentage of free amino acid nitrogen to soluble nitrogen, however, appears to be higher in high protein variety (IR 667). 4) Alanine was much lower than aspartic acid in IR 667 having Indica blood while alanine appears to be higher than aspartic acid in Jinhung (Japonica rice) suggesting varietal difference in amino acid metabolism. 5) Threonine peak was overlaped with glutamine, and serine was with asparagine in this study.
The amino acid composition of rice is a major concern of rice breeders because amino acids are among the most important nutrient components in rice. In this study, a genetic map was constructed with a population of 134 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross between Dasanbyeo (Tongil-type indica) and TR22183 (temperate japonica), as a means to detect the main and epistatic effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the amino acid content (AAC). Using a linkage map which covered a total of 1458 cM based on 239 molecular marker loci, a total of six main-effect QTLs (M-QTLs) was identified for the content of six amino acids that were mapped onto chromosome 3. For all the M-QTLs, the TR22183 allele increased the trait values. The QTL cluster (flanked by id3015453 and id3016090) on chromosome 3 was associated with the content of five amino acids. The phenotypic variation, explained by the individual QTLs located in this cluster, ranged from 10.2 to 12.4%. In addition, 26 epistatic QTLs (Ep-QTLs) were detected and the 25 loci involved in this interaction were distributed on all nine chromosomes. Both the M-QTLs and Ep-QTLs detected in this study will be useful in breeding programs which target the development of rice with improved amino acid composition.

Hydration of twelve japonica (j) and nine j x indica rice varieties was analyzed in terms of mathematical rate equation and a tentative classification of milled rice was attempted primarily on the basis of water uptake race of rice grain at room temperature. No two rice varieties had the same water uptake rate or diffusion coefficient. The rice samples could be classified into three groups. Rices which are considered as having good eating quality had lower water uptake rate.
Quantitative trait loci (QTLs), which were related to the ability of callus induction and plant regeneration in seed culture of rice, were analyzed using a mapping population from a cross between the rice cultivars 'Samgang' (tongil type) and 'Nagdong' (japonica). A tongil type rice cultivar, 'Samgang' showed lower frequency (20%) of plant regeneration than that (35%) of japonica rice, 'Nagdong'. Transgressive segregations were observed for the ability of callus induction and plant regeneration from the seed-derived calli of 58 doubled haploid (DH) lines. The ability of plant regeneration of 58 doubled haploid lines showed a continuous distribution with comparatively wide range (10.0 to 66.7%) of variation. Composite interval mapping analysis was used to identify the QTLs controlling callus induction and plant regeneration ability. Four significant QTLs, qCWS6, qCWS8, qCWS9 and qCWS11, associated with callus weight per seed were detected on chromosomes 6, 8, 9, and 11 with LOD values of 3.30, 2.60, 2.70 and 2.43, explaining 36% of the total phenotypic variation. Three significant QTLs, qPR1, qPR6, and qPR11, for the ability of plant regeneration were located on chromosome 1, 6, and 11 at LOD score of 2.25, 2.15 and 2.55, accounting for 24 % of the total phenotypic variation. The present study should be useful for improving the efficiency of plant regeneration in tissue culture of indica rice by means of marker-assisted selection.
Two rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.), Hwa-seongbyeo of Japonica type and Taebackbyeo of Indica/Japonica type, were cultivated with hydroponic culture to examine nitrogen effects on the growth responses, contents and utilizations of carbohydrates, and the ripening velocity of grains with three different N levels. Plant height and tiller number were clearly increased to 80 ppm N level compared to 40 ppm N level and then they were slightly decreased in N level of 120 ppm. Higher dry weights were appeared with 80 ppm N level than did with other N levels, showing statistically differences in both cultivars and N levels, while dry weight of roots was heavier with decreasing the N levels. Therefore, T/R ratios were not significantly different among N levels, although there was statistically differences between rice cultivars. After the flowering stage, higher water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and water-insoluble carbohydrate (WISC) were contained in stem compared with other parts, showing that WISC of sheath and stem, unlike WSC, was significantly different among N levels. Starch of grain, WISC, was remarkedly increased from 3.0% at just after the flowering to 52.0% and 75.0% at 15 and 30 day after the flowering, respectively, showing that lower N application had faster accumulation of starch in rice grains. N would affect the contents of carbohydrates of each tissue, and starch accumulation in rice grains.
Pasting properties of 35 traditional (Japonica) and 23 high-yielding (J/Indica) rice varieties having various hydration rates at $23^{\circ}C$ were investigated. Amylograms showed that high-yielding rice varieties had higher values for peak (P), hot-paste (H) and cold-paste (C) viscosities than those for traditional rice varieties. P had a highly negative correlation with H/P, C/P and C/H. P of traditional rice varieties was positively and negatively correlated with protein amylose contents, respectively. However, H and C showed no correlation with protein or amylose content. No correlation was observed between amylograph indices and hydration rate of rice grain.
