  • This study evaluated 23 elderly residents living independently in 4 group homes for their behaviors of space occupancy and activities of daily living. The aim of the study was to analysis the habit of space occupancy of residents in group homes for elderly people. As the results, the habit of space occupancy of residents in group homes was analysed and categorized into four types: (1) bedroom occupancy, (2) common space occupancy, (3) 2-space occupancy and (4) several spaces occupancy. It was shown, then, that the common space occupancy in ‘ㅂ' group home, 2-space occupancy and several spaces occupancy in 'ㅇ' and 'ㄱ' group homes, and bedroom occupancy in ‘ㅅ' group home were highest, respectively, so that the type of their space occupancy varied in accordance with individual group homes. Moreover, there was a difference in the habit of their space occupancy according to the degree of achieving both ADL and IADL. This fact seems to indicate that the higher the degree of their independence in ADL and IADL, the more the number of their occupying space. Accordingly, the degree of their independence in achieving ADL and IADL should be taken into account in planning residential spaces for elderly people, including individual and commonly sharing spaces, traffic lines, layout and facilities.

  • This study was conducted with objectives to assess consumption structure of the elderly households in Korea, focusing on the difference of consumption structure depending on the poverty status and family type. The results of this study show that the poor elderly households have primarily consumed the necessary goods for health care, food, clothing, and shelter. Especially, the poor single elderly living alone and married couples living independently(or alone) have been in the serious unbalanced consumption status. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that the support schemes to help the consumption of necessary goods should be introduced to improve their economic well-being. The support schemes to promote their social role as consumers should be also introduced.

  • In the design guideline about the existing elderly housing, the equipment related to bathroom are the most important in the secure and functional aspect. On the other hand, the present elderly housing is being designed according to foreign design guideline or common housing form instead of reflecting living and physical qualities of the Korean elderly. Therefore, in this study based on the guideline of the existing literature, we made Mockup furnished with the equipments of bathroom and conducted an experiment in finding proper position and height for Korean elderly enough to use the bathroom conveniently and independently. The equipments of bathroom consist of different height wash bowls, toilet stools, grab bars, and a bathtub. As a result, suitable height of wash bowl is 760 mm $\pm{\alpha}$. We can realized that elderly feel comfortable to grab perpendicular bars of toilet stools more than horizontal ones. So it is necessary for elderly to grip perpendicular of grab bars added to prevention slipping and made shape easy to hold. Most of elderly told us that 500 mm of the bathtub setting is suitable. But many other people feel high. So height of the bathtub must be established lower than 500 mm for safety in the bathroom and for convenience.

  • The purpose of this research was to find empirical evidence to support the varidity of developing a three generation family apartment as a cultural housing model In Korea. This was done through interviews, a questionnaire mailing survey and the delphi method.Major findings were as follows; There was a string preference for the elderly to live together with their married children, whereas their married children preferred to live independently, being separated from their old parents.Housewives of the younger generation recognized many advantages or good points of the three generation living together. They, however pointed out many disadvantages as well. Most of the good points were related to psychological comfortableness steming from living close each other, while most of the bad points to behavioral constraints steming from living together in one residential unit. This suggested that a new type of heusing, which provides privacy for each generation as well as the feeling of closeness between the two generations, needs to be developed to disseminate positive aspects of the three generation family cuture. There is a concensus among professionals that the three generation family apartment is a promising cultural housing model in korea, especially for the elderly in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide information for research about residents' opinion toward the physical environments of elderly facilities, through the analysis and investigation on the research methodology of foreign academic journal articles from 1990 to 2014. The study results were as follows: Firstly, purposive sampling was a large majority of both facilities and elderly residents. In quantitative studies, many researchers have conducted simple random, cluster, or stratified sampling. Diverse facilities in area, size, location, and etc. should be considered for participation. The qualifications for residents' participation should be considered as well, so that they all could have autonomy for study participation. Secondly, questionnaire and semi-structured guide were likely to be used in independent and resident care facilities. On the other hand in assisted living and long-term care facilities, open questions and visual material were used as well. A compatible scale should be developed so that elderly having variable functional level could participate independently in the study. Thirdly, in data collection process, compliance with research ethics and well trained interviewer's skill were important for residents' active responses and minimization of response errors. Enough research period of time and mixed study in data collection will decrease the response error.

  • People have experienced physical problems including vision problems with aging; some are normal and some are abnormal. When they have abnormal and impaired vision, they have a lower level of life satisfaction than their sighted peers. For the elderly with sight loss, well-designed housing could be an important indicator for their quality of life. Housing adjustment and modification could help the elderly cope with sight loss, do daily activities more independently, and lead to better quality of life. The purpose of this study is to investigate housing conditions for the elderly with vision impaired, state of housing adjustment or modifications, and the effects of housing conditions on the wellness of the elderly in Korea. For this study, 18 housing cases were investigated and a total number of 65 visually impaired people aged over 55 participated. Housing condition of those participated was poor. Most observed home hazards are level differences in living areas, obstacles in the hallway, confined space that is not allowed structural modification, swing doors from wardrobe or cabinets, color contrast, poor lightings, and etc. Majority of households participated in this study did not make modification or refurbishments, rather many of them tend to adapt themselves to their residential environments. Older adults living in better housing condition and under less difficult environments are likely to have higher life satisfaction. The effects of housing condition on wellness could be more influential when individual capabilities (e.g. health condition) are weaker. The findings underline that with intervention of individual characteristics, the effects of housing and physical environment on negative outcomes of vision loss would get ameliorated or reduced.

  • With the entry into an aged society, interest and demand for the elderly are increasing. The rapid increase in the elderly is calling for change in various fields. As the opportunities and desires of the elderly to participate in society increase, research on services suitable for the elderly society is needed. Although the expansion of convenience facilities and improvement of the system are being made to solve problems arising from the elderly society, there are many shortcomings in the increasing demand of the elderly. In addition, due to aging, they have difficulty in living independently and independently due to the decline in their daily life ability and physical function. To solve these problems, the government and local governments provide various services for the elderly. The service for the elderly is provided based on the general characteristics of the elderly, so it has limitations in customized services. In this paper, present a service model using extended information in ICT-based services to complement these problems. Scalable information uses IoT environments to collect information and environmental information for the elderly. Service support using information on the expansion of the elderly shall identify the characteristics of the elderly and support appropriate services when users request services. The proposed method may support self-reliance services that reflect the characteristics and needs of the elderly.
