A Development and Application of Independent Study Checklist for Mathematics Gifted Students (초등수학 영재학생을 위한 독립연구 점검표 개발 및 적용)

  • In this study, an 'Independent Study Checklist' for gifted mathematics students was developed and applied. The characteristics shown in the results after the 'Independent Study Checklist' was applied to mathematics gifted students were analysed. The checklist was divided into six phases of the independent study process and included checking contents at each stage. Observations, student interviews and results of the process of 'Independent Study' were collected and analysed to understand the characteristics of students' outcomes. The results from the application of the 'Independent Study Checklist' suggest the followings. First, the 'Independent Study Checklist' took the role of a self-check list to identify the process of the 'Independent Study'. Second, the check points of the 'Independent Study Checklist' presented the view of discussion to gifted students. Third, the 'Independent Study Checklist' was used as teaching material for teachers of gifted students. Fourth, 'Independent Study Checklist' was optionally used according student's study topics and method. Fifth, the checklist at each phase was continuously used during the whole process of 'Independent Study'. The teachers' interest and encouragement took the role of facilitating students' study process.

Korean Translation of the CARE guidelines (CARE 지침 한국어판 제작)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to develop the official Korean translation of the CARE guidelines. Methods : CARE guidelines were developed in 2013 though a consensus of experts led by the CARE group. It is the first reporting guideline for case reports that includes a 13-item checklist. We contacted the main author of the original manuscript and obtained permission to develop the Korean translation. The translation process followed a systematic protocol designated by the CARE group which included an independent back translation and confirmation from the original author. Results : The Korean translation of the CARE guidelines was completed with approval from the original author. The Korean checklist is posted on the official website (www.care-statement.org) and the final translation of the manuscript is introduced in this article as an appendix. Conclusions : We hope that this will help introduce the CARE guidelines to Korean authors and other stakeholders, induce a more active use of reporting guidelines, and eventually contribute to the overall improvement of the reporting quality of case reports published in Korean literature.

Evaluation of the Reporting and Methodological Quality of the Systematic Review from the Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine (대한한방소아과학회지에 게재된 체계적 문헌고찰의 보고 질 및 방법론적 질 평가)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to assess the reporting quality and methodological quality of systematic reviews from the Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine. Methods Systematic reviews were selected from the Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine (JPKM) by utilizing Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS) and JPKM homepage. Two independent researchers assessed the reporting quality through Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline checklist, and assessed the methodological quality of systematic review through Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 tool checklist. Results Four systematic reviews were finally selected for the assessment. When assessed by PRISMA, three literatures were little insufficient, and one literature was sufficient. When assessed by AMSTAR 2, three literatures were moderate quality, and one literature was critically low quality. Also, all of the reviews had no information about 'Protocol and registration', 'publication bias', and 'conflicts of interest'. Conclusions Systematic review is important for Journal of Pediatrics of Korean Medicine and Korean Medicine Society. Efforts are needed to improve the reporting and methodological quality of the systematic reviews through PRISMA and AMSTAR 2.

Evaluation System for Selecting Residents of Supportive Housing in Seoul

  • Purpose: This study aims to improve the evaluation system for selecting supportive housing applicants, addressing inconsistency, lack of health and care evaluation, and the need for a quantitative evaluation tool. Proposed improvements include a consistent evaluation index and items for each resident type, selecting suitable residents for independent living and community integration. Research design, data and methodology: This study analyzed the supportive housing selection checklist provided by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the supportive housing ordinance, and the SH Corporation's operation guidelines. Results: Study finds current supportive housing tenant selection system lacks consistency and proposes improvements. The same terms should be used for the same evaluation items, health and care evaluation items should be added for all tenants, and a quantitative evaluation tool should be used. Consistent evaluation index and items should be created for each resident type in the same evaluation area. The aim is to select suitable tenants with potential for independent living and community integration. Conclusions: This study improves the evaluation system for selecting supportive housing applicants by addressing inconsistencies and adding essential evaluation items related to health and care. While the study is significant, future research should focus on developing quantitative evaluation tools for all detailed items.

A Study on Evaluation of Residential Environments and Residential Alterations for Physically Disabled Women (여성지체장애인 가정의 주택 개조 실태 및 거주자의 물리적 주거환경 평가에 관한 연구)

  • In order to develop a manual of residential alterations for the physically disabled, this case study was accomplished to analyze and evaluate residential environments and residential alterations for physically disabled women. Twenty-nine physically disabled women in Seoul and Kyunggi areas were the subjects of this study. With the evaluation checklist on physical environments of their housing, data on general characteristics of wall, floor, and all features and equipments and spaces of bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living mom, entrance and balcony were gathered. Also, data on residential alterations were gathered through personal interviews. The data were collected from July 18th to July 25th in 2000. Frequency, percentage, and mean were used to analyze the data. In kitchen, small space, hee space under the sink and heights of the lower cabinets were not properly provided. In bathroom, door width, direction of opening door, adjustable height of shower, level difference, clear space for wheelchair user, and storage place were not appropriate to the disabled. Kitchen and bathroom showed high frequencies of alteration. But most of the subjects were not satisfied with the alterations of their housing. They also wanted to alter these two spaces in the future. In order to after their housing effectively appropriate information of the residential alterations was needed. If a guide or manual book for residential alterations was provided, the physically disabled people will more easily after their housing for safe and independent life.

  • The aim of this study is to propose a systematic way of evaluating competing ELT textbook series. Three stages of evaluation procedures were employed: A sample of two sets of English textbook series for young learners were first analysed by five trained textbook evaluators using a checklist. Second, based on the results of analysis, evaluative discussion was carried out. Third, two independent evaluators conducted impressionistic evaluation on the series. The procedure employed in this materials evaluation process can be adapted in choosing series of textbooks. Since not many studies have dealt the evaluation of textbook series by multiple evaluators, the method presented in this study can be referred to and applied by materials evaluators in other contexts.

Problem Behavior of Preschool Children : The Influence of Marital Conflict and of Children's Temperament and Emotion Regulation (부부갈등과 유아의 기질 및 정서조절능력이 유아의 문제행동에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study of the influence of marital conflict and of children's temperament and emotion regulation on problem behavior, 194 mothers of 3- to 5-year-old children responded to the O'Leary- Poter Scale(1980), the Emotionality, Activity and Shyness scale(Buss & Plomin, 1984) and the Emotion Regulation Checklist(Shields & Cicchetti, 1997); teachers rated children's behavior on the Problem Behavior Questionnaire(Behar & Stringfield, 1974). Data were analyzed by independent t-tests, correlations, and multiple regressions. Results demonstrated that shyness, activity, and emotion regulation had direct effects on hostile-aggressive behaviors. Shy temperament had a direct effect on fearful-anxious behavior. Both marital conflict and temperament influenced hostile-aggressive behaviors indirectly through emotion regulation, implying a crucial role of emotion regulation in preschoolers' social development.

The Role of Government Regulations in Enhancing Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure and Firm Value

  • This study investigates, first, whether the extent of corporate social and environmental responsibility disclosure (CSERD) differs between 2010 and 2014; second, whether government regulation affects the extent of CSERD; and, third, whether the CSERD is valued by investors. Content analysis method was used to extract 466 companies' annual reports to measure the extent of social and environmental responsibility disclosure based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) checklist. Independent sample t-test and multivariate regression analysis were also conducted to test the differences of the extent of CSERD as well as determinants and consequence of CSERD. Our results show that the extent of CSERD in 2014 is 21.60 percent higher than in 2010 (13.39 percent). Government regulation has a significant effect on the extent of CSERD. This study also finds that market values positively CSER information disclosed by company. Given that government regulation has a positive impact, however, the findings of this study suggests that the extent of CSERD is still low. To enhance CSERD, government should continuously encourage companies to abide by the regulations as mandated. This study provides a more comprehensive insights of CSRED practices from an emerging country and the effect of government regulation in enhancing CSERD.

Subjective Sleep Problems of Depressed Patients with Different Types of Life-Time Traumatic Stress Events: An Explorative Study (우울증 환자에서 외상 사건 경험과 주관적 수면 문제의 특성)

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between subjective sleep problems and various types of traumatic events of patients with depressive disorder. Methods : A total of 411 patients diagnosed with depressive disorders were recruited in this study. The participants filled out Life Time Events Checklist (LEC), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). We used the independent t-test and analysis of covariance to compare each component of PSQI between depressive patients with and without traumatic experiences. Results : The groups of patients who experienced a serious accident at work, home or during recreational activity, sexual assault, other unwanted or uncomfortable sexual experience, life-threatening illness or injury, and sudden, unexpected death of a near and dear one showed lower scores in a few components of PSQI. Sleep disturbance was a common problem in all five groups. Lower subjective sleep quality and longer sleep latency was observed in three groups. There were no differences in the other components of PSQI among groups. Conclusion : This study showed that various types of traumatic events may have different effects on subjective sleep quality as a consequence of the traumatic event which they had experienced.

The Relationship between Experience of Verbal Abuse, Compassion Fatigue, and Work Engagement in Emergency Nurses (응급실 간호사의 언어폭력경험과 공감피로 및 직무열의의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study is a descriptive research study to identify the relationship between the experience of verbal abuse, compassion fatigue, and work engagement among nurses in the emergency unit. Methods: Study subjects were 107 nurses working in a university hospital in Gyeonggi-Do. The instruments used were a verbal abuse checklist, a subscale of the Professional Quality of Life Scale used to measure compassion fatigue, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 22.0 program for independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: Emergency nurses experienced more verbal abuse and compassion fatigue than nurses in other departments, and the level of work engagement was low. There was a positive correlation between experience of verbal abuse and compassion fatigue and a negative correlation between both of these variables and work engagement. Particularly, verbal abuse appeared in the order of nurses, patients & caregivers, and doctors. This means there were serious problems with communication with nurses. Conclusion: In order to reduce verbal abuse, it is necessary to establish a communication culture of mutual respect between nurses, medical staff, patients & caregivers. Moreover, a compassion fatigue management program is needed to reduce emotional fatigue.
