  • A newly developed Advanced Indentation System (AIS), which is a portable and nondestructive system for evaluating tensile properties, was used to measure mechanical behavior of materials used under high temperature and pressure conditions. This test measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation and fracture. Aging effects of Cr-Mo and Cr-Mo-V steel at high temperature were simulated. Tensile properties including yield strength and tensile strength at various temperature are obtained from the test. For all test materials and conditions, the AIS-derived results were in good agreement with those from conventional standard test method. Examples of the test results ate given and potential applications of the AIS to assess the integrity of aging structures are briefly discussed.

  • Ball indentation tests have been used to estimate the mechanical properties of materials by some investigators. In this study, load-depth curves from ball indentation tests have been analysed using the geometric conditions of ball indentation. Series of numerical calculations and experimental results showed that those curves could be simplified by linear functions. After linearizing the indentation curves, the estimation process of the flow properties became straight forward and the scatter of results could be drastically reduced.

  • Cast stainless steel (CSS) is thermally aged by a long term exposure in the range of nuclear power plant operating temperature. The thermal aging is a cause of concern for the continued safe and reliable operation of CSS nuclear components. Therefore, an assessment of degradation in material properties of these components has been importantly considered. In this study the ball indentation tests were performed on four cast stainless steels aged at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3600 hours, to investigate the applicability of ball indentation test to the assessment of aging degradation of cast stainless steels. Thus, the reliability of ball indentation test for aged CSS was analyzed by evaluating the scattering of data tested from each material and by comparing tensile properties obtained from ball indentation test and standard tensile test. Also, the tensile properties of aged CSS obtained from ball indentation test were compared with those predicted by the evaluation procedure developed on the basis of material database for aged CSS.

  • The true stress - true strain relation of SA508 steel was evaluated with analytical and experimental equation on the base of the indentation load-depth curve obtained from the modeling of ball indentation test. The evaluated relation between true stress and true strain is agreed well with that of SA508 teel defined in the modeling. The distribution of effective stress along the center axis of indentation depth was calculated with Tresca criteria in the modeling. The representative strain, which are defined in this study as the corresponding strains obtained from the maximum effective stress, have a linear relation with the true strain. The true stress - true strain relation of austenitic stainless steel was evaluated by the modeling of ball indentation test to verify the case of A508 steel.

  • Indentation and small punch tests are very powerful methods to monitor the materials reliability since they are very simple, easy and almost non-destructive. First, recently-developed continuous indentation test can provide the more material properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, yield strength, work-hardening exponent, etc., than the conventional hardness test. In our study, the true stress-strain curve was derived from the indentation load-depth curve for spherical indentation. In detail, the strain was able to be obtained from plastic depth/contact radius ratio, and the flow stress was from mean contact pressure through the analysis of elastic-plastic indentation stress field. Secondly, the small punch test was studied to evaluate the fracture toughness and defomation properties such as elastic modulus and yield strength. Like the indentation test, this test can be applied without severe damage of the target structure.

  • In this study we tried to determine the work-hardening exponent using continuous indentation test. Work-hardening exponent, which was determined by Hollomon equation, in tensile test, is an important parameter to determine plastic deformation and brittle/ductile property of materials. For using Hollomon equation, true stress and true strain were defined by indentation depth and indentation load. Using them the new equation, which is constituted by indentation depth, indentation load and work-hardening exponent, was induced. Indentation depth was calibrated because of elastic deflection and pile-up/sink-in phenomena. Work-hardening exponents of various steels derived by it showed good agreement to the results of tensile tests. In addition to experiments, FEM simulation was accomplished to investigate changes of real contact depth with materials properties changes. Through this simulation it is concluded that the real contact depth is changed by Y/E value which affect the early stage of indentation, and work-hardening exponent which the latter stage.

  • Nondestructive instrumented indentation test is the method to evaluate the mechanical properties by analyzing load - displacement curve when forming indentation on the surface of the specimen within hundreds of micro-indentation depth. Resistance spot welded samples are known to difficult to measure the local mechanical properties due to the combination of microstructural changes with heat input. Particularly, more difficulties arise to evaluate local mechanical properties of resistance spot welds because of having narrow HAZ, as well as dramatic changed in microstructure and hardness properties across the welds. In this study, evaluation of the local mechanical properties of resistance spot welds was carried out using the characterization of Instrumented Indentation testing. Resistance spot welding were performed for 590MPa DP (Dual Phase) steels and 780MPa TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity) steels following ISO 18278-2 condition. Mechanical properties of base metal using tensile test and Instrumented Indentation test showed similar results. Also it is possible to measure local mechanical properties of the center of fusion zone, edge of fusion zone, HAZ and base metal regions by using instrumented indentation test. Therefore, measurement of local mechanical properties using instrumented indentation test is efficient, reliable and relatively simple technique to evaluate the tensile strength, yield strength and hardening exponent.

  • Until now, the tensile properties of materials can be obtained just in accordance with conventional tensile testing methods which are described in several standards such as ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standard and BS (British Standard). For some cases including on-service facility materials, however, the standard testing methods cannot be applicable due to the destructive testing procedure and specimen size requirement. Therefore, simple, non-destructive and advanced indentation technique was proposed. This test measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation and fracture. In this paper, the research trend of non-destructive evaluation of tensile properties using AIS (advanced indentation system) and its application fields are reviewed and discussed.

  • This paper deals with application of instrumented indentation technique for quality inspection methodology for automobile component. For this, the instrumented indentation tests were performed the normal and cracked compressor journal, which is made from spheroidal graphite cast iron and utilized in air-conditioning system. And the Brinell hardness was estimated using the unloading slope and maximum indentation force. With the aid of Normal distribution, this Brinell hardness was statistically compared and analyzed with hardness measured by indentation hardness tests. Also, application possibility of reliability-based quality inspection criteria for compressor journal was evaluated through the probabilistic analysis for the Brinell hardness estimated by instrumented indentation technique.
