When material properties depend much on positions in a material or it is difficult to make test specimens from a material or component, an instrumented indentation test described in ISO 14577-1, 14577-2 or KS B 0950 can be used to measure material properties and damage. In this study, first of all, the principals of the instrumented indentation test, KS B 0950 are introduced and yield strengths, tensile strengths and work hardening exponents of base materials, heat affected zones and weld materials are measured. In addition, the influence of post-weld heat treatment on the material properties is investigated. Finally the fatigue lift of butt welded specimens are evaluated by the local strain approach. To calculate local strains and stresses, elasto-plastic finite element analysis is conducted using the measured properties.
In most of sintered metal powder compacts, the sintered density distribution is controlled to be as high and uniform as possible to ensure the required mechanical properties. In general, the density distribution in the compacts is not uniform and not easy to measure. In the present study, a method for measuring the density distribution was developed, based on the indentation force equation by which the hardness and the relative density were related. The indentation force equation, expressed as a function of strength constant, workhardening coefficient and relative density, was obtained by finite element analysis of rigid-ball indentation on sintered powder metal compacts. The present method was verified by comparing the predicted density distribution in the sintered Fe-0.5%C-2%Cu compacts with that obtained by experiments, in which the density distribution was directly measured by machining the compacts from the outer surface progressively.
Hardness test is performed for determination of the other properties, such as strength, wear resistance and deformation resistance, as well as hardness itself. And it is performed for prediction of residual lifetime by analysis of hardness reduction or hardness ratio. However, hardness test has limitation that observation of residual indent is needed for determination of hardness value, and that is the reason for not to be widely used in industrial field. Therefore, in this study, we performed researches to obtain Brinell hardness value from quantitative numerical formula by analysing relationship between indentation depths from indentation load-depth curve and mechanical properties such as work hardening exponent, yield strength and elastic modulus.
Most of materials receive force in using, therefore, the characteristics of materials must be considered in system design not to occur deformation or destruction. Mechanical properties about materials can be expressed as responsible level of material itself under the exterior operation. Main mechanical properties is strength, hardness, ductility and stiffness etc. Currently, among major measure facilities to measure such mechanical properties, advanced indentation technique has focused in industrial areas as reason of nondestructive and easy applications for mechanical tensile properties and evaluation of residual stress of materials. This study is to find the optimum experimental condition about residual stress advanced indentation technique for accurate analysis of the welded joint of steel materials through indentation load-depth curve obtained from cruciform specimen experiment. Optimum selection was applied to the welded joint of real steel materials to give non-equi-biaxial stress state and compared with general residual stress analyzing method for verification.
UV imprinting process can manufacture high-functional optical components with low cost. If hard polymers can be used as transparent molds at this process, the cost will be much lower. However, there are limited researches to predict the machinability and the burr of hard polymers. Therefore, a new method to predict them by analyzing load-depth curves which can be obtained by the instrumented indentation test was developed in this study. The load-depth curve contains elastic deformation and plastic deformation simultaneously. The ratio of the plastic deformation over the sum of the two deformation is proportional to the ductility of materials which is one of the parameters of the machinability and the burr. The instrumented indentation tests were performed on the transparent molds of the hard polymers and the values of ratio were calculated. The machinability and the burr of three kinds of hard polymers were predicted by the ratio, and the prediction was in agreement with the experimental results from the machined surfaces of the three kinds of hard polymers.

This paper describes a damage accumulation mechanism in cross-ply CFRP laminates $[0_2/90_2]_{2S}$ subjected to out-of-plane loading. Drop-weight impact and static indentation tests were carried out, and induced damage was observed by ultrasonic C-scan and an optical microscope. Both tests gave essentially the same results for damage modes, sizes, and load-deformation history. First, a crack occurred in the bottom $0^{\circ}$ layer accompanying some delamination along the crack caused by bending stress. Then, transverse cracks occurred in the middle $90^{\circ}$ layer with decreasing contact force between the specimen and the indenter. Measured local strains near the impact point showed that the stress state changed from a bending dominant state to an in-plane tensile dominant state. A cohesive interface element was used to simulate the propagation of multiple delaminations and transverse cracks under static indentation. Two types of analytical models are considered, one with multiple delaminations and the other with both multiple delaminations and transverse cracks. The damage obtained for the model with only multiple delaminations was quite different from that obtained from the experiment. However, the results obtained from the model with both delaminations and transverse cracks well explain the characteristics of the damage obtained in the experiment. The existence of the transverse cracks is essential to form the characteristic impact damage.
In this study, Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process with different process conditions (with- and without hydrogen gas). As adding the hydrogen gas, thermal energy in the plasma flame increased and induced difference in the melting state of the Cu-based BMG particles. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the coatings were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and nano-indentation tester in the light of phase analysis. It was elucidated by the nano-indentation tests that un-melted region was a mainly amorphous phase which showed discrete plasticity observed as the flow serrations on the load.displacement (P - h) curves, and the curves of solidified region showed lower flow serrations as amorphous phase mingled with crystalline phase. Oxides produced during the spraying process had the highest hardness value among the phases and were well mixed with other phases resulted from the increase in melting degree.
The optimum design against contact crack initiation is investigated to find major parameters in designing desirable surface-coated asymmetric layered components. Hard ceramic coated soft materials with various elastic modulus mismatch are prepared for the analysis. Spherical indentation is conducted for producing contact cracks from the surface or interface between the coating and the substrate layer. A finite element analysis of the stress fields in the loaded layer components enables a direct correlation between the damage patterns and the stress distributions. Implications concerning the design of asymmetric layered components indicate that the coating thickness and the elastic modulus mismatch are important parameters for designing layered component to prevent the initiation of contact cracks.
Residual stress is a dominant obstacle to efficient production and safe usage of device by deteriorating the mechanical strength and failure properties. Therefore, we proposed a new thin film stress-analyzing technique using a nanoindentation method. For this aim, the shape change in the indentation load-depth curve during the stress-relief in film was theoretically modeled. The change in indentation depth by load-controlled stress relaxation process was related to the increase or decrease in the applied load using the elastic flat punch theory. Finally, the residual stress in thin film was calculated from the changed applied load based on the equivalent stress interaction model. The evaluated stresses for diamond-like carbon films from this nanoindentation analysis were consistent with the results from the conventional curvature method.
