Recently, the analysis of microcutting with submicrometer depth of cut is tried to get a more high quality surface product, but to get a valuable result another method instead of conventional finite element method must be considered because finite element method is impossible for a very small focused region and mesh size. As the alternative method, Molecular Dynamics or Statics is suggested and accepted in the field of microcutting, indentation and crack propagation. In this paper using Molecular Dynamics simulation, the phenomena of microcutting with subnanometer chip thickness is studied and the cutting mechanism for tool edge configuration is evaluated. As the result of simulation the atomistic chip formation is achieved.

The barrier rib on plasma display panel (PDP) is a typical 3D-patterned thick film with thickness of 120 ㎛ and it is hard to measure its dielectric constant in this state of the product. Because the porosity of ceramic thick film influenced the mechanical and dielectric characteristics, it was expected that there was the relationship between two properties. Therefore, the correlation analysis between porosity, hardness and dielectric constant of the barrier rib was studied and the exponential curve between porosity and hardness, and the quadratic curve between porosity and dielectric constant were drawn. The dielectric constant was well related to hardness by K400kHz = 0.5672 + 5.695 ln(Hv). The hardness was measured at five points on two real panels which sintered by two types of profiles and then dielectric constants and deviation were estimated by the above equation.
Forensic Engineering is the art and science of professionals qualified to serve as engineering experts in courts of law or in arbitration proceedings. Buses using compressed natural gas (CNG) trend to be extended in use internationally as optimal counterplan for reducing discharge gas of light oil due to high concern about environment. However, CNG buses is equipped with composite pressure vessels (CPVs); since the CPVs contain compressed natural gas, the risks in the case of accident is very high. In this study, the bursting test for the pressure vessel depending on the heat treatment conditions of the vessel in which the actual ruptured accident occurred, after the bursting test, the fracture pattern analysis had performed. The mechanical materials properties test using Instrumented Indentation Test had performed to confirm the mechanical properties for each heat treatment cases. Also, the fractography analysis and metallographic analysis had performed to find out the difference of each heat treatment case. By comparing normal vessel with abnormal vessel which have defect of heat treatment conditions in term of the bursting patterns and characteristics of containers using various forensic engineering methods, especially, it is possible to understand how important the heat treatment process is in the high pressure vessel unlike any product.
A spacer grid which is one of the most important structural components in a pressurized water reactor fuel is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps, welded at the intersections to form an egg-crate structure. The spacer grid is required to not only protect fuel rods stably but also have sufficient lateral crush strength for the sake of enabling shut-down of the nuclear reactor during abnormal operating environments. Then, the lateral crush strength of the spacer grid is closely related with welding quality of the spacer grid. Previous research on the crush strength analysis of the spacer grid had been performed using only parent material properties. In this study, to investigate the effect on the crush strength of the spacer grid when used mechanical properties in weld zone instead of parent material properties, crush strength analysis considering mechanical properties in weld zone obtained from the instrumented indentation technique was performed and compared the results with the previous research.
Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) has been found in the weld region of the nuclear power plant. Welding can produce tensile residual stress. Tensile residual stress contributes to the initiation and growth of PWSCC. It is important to estimate weld residual stress accurately to predict or prevent the initiation and growth of PWSCC. This paper shows the results of finite element analysis and measurement experiment for weld residual stress. For the study, four kinds of specimen were fabricated with the materials used in the nuclear power plant. Residual stresses were measured by four kinds of methods of hole drilling, x-ray diffraction, instrumented indentation and sectioning. Through the study, numerical analysis and measurement results were compared and the characteristics of each measurement technique were observed.
In recent years the interest on flexible display has been increasing as a future display due to its bendable characteristics. An ITO(indium tin oxide) layer, which is part of a flexible display, can be broken easily while bending because it is made of brittle materials. This brittle property can cause the malfunction of flexible display. To analyze fracture characteristics of ITO layer, bending test was conducted commonly. However, it is not possible to know specific phenomena on bended ITO layer by simple bending test only. Accordingly, in this study, the FE(finite element) model is developed similarly to a real flexible display to analyze stress distribution of flexible display under bending condition, especially on ITO layer. To validate FE model, actual bending test was conducted and the test results were compared with the simulation results by measuring reaction forces during bending. By using the developed model, FE analysis about the effect of design parameter (Thickness & Young's Modulus of BL) on ITO Layer was performed. By explained FE analysis above, this research draws a conclusion of reliable design guide of flexible display, especially on ITO layer.
In this study, we investigated fatigue crack growth behavior of laser welded sheet metal due to a single overload. Fatigue specimens were made using butt joint of cold rolled sheet metal that was welded by $CO_2$ laser. The fatigue crack propagation tests were performed in such a way that fatigue loading was parallel to the weld line while crack propagation was perpendicular to the weld line. Single overload was applied when fatigue crack tip was arrived near the weld line. The distances between the crack tip and the weld line at which a single overload was applied were 6, 4 and 2mm. The effect of specimen thickness and overload ratio on the fatigue behavior was determined. The plastic zone size of crack tip due to the single overload was determined from the finite element analysis. For investigating fatigue crack growth behavior, we used different thickness specimen 0.9mm and 2.0mm, and variable overload ratio applied fatigue crack propagation test. Also we used finite element analysis for investigating the plastic zone size of crack tip when single overload applied
This paper illustrates haw $Y_2O_3$ contributes to crack-healing strengths as a function of crack-healing temperature and the additive amount. In investigating mechanical properties, the indentation fracture method is very simple and useful, but careful attention must be paid to the statistical data processing because data may be scattered excessively, especially for brittle materials. To estimate accurate AE signal properties we applied the useful time-frequency method with a discrete wavelet analysis algorithm. In experiments, three kinds of specimens were prepared. After the specimens were indented by a Vickers indentor, they were heat-treated and crack-healed to evaluate bending strength and the AE signal. With higher amounts of the additive powder, as 1, 3, or 5% wt. of $Y_2O_3$, the concentrative tendency of dominant frequency trended toward lower frequency groups. The $Al_2O_3$ ceramic with 3% wt. of $Y_2O_3$ was judged most suitable because it demonstrated superior crack-healing ability and relative concentration on the highest frequency group.
In this study, DLC films deposited by PECVD were evaluated to the properties of super-hydrophobic by CF4 treatment. The structure of DLC films were confirmed by Raman Spectra whether or not mixed sp3 (like diamond) peak and sp2 (like graphite) peak. And the hydrogen contents in the DLC films (F-DLC) were measured by RBS analysis. In addition, DLC films were analyzed by scratch test for adhesion, nano-indentation for hardness and tribo-meter of Ball-on-disc type for friction coefficient. In the result of analysis, DLC films had traditional structure regardless of variation of hardness at constant conditions. Also adhesion of DLC film was increased as higher material hardness. Otherwise, friction coefficient was increased as lower material hardness. The DLC films were treated by CF4 plasma treatment to enhance the properties of super-hydrophobic. And the DLC films were measured by ESEM(Enviromental Scanning Electron Microscope) for water condensation.
