Performance Evaluation of Opportunistic Incremental Relaying Systems by using Partial and Full Channel Information in Rayleigh Fading Channels (레일레이 페이딩 채널에서 부분 및 전체 채널 정보를 이용하는 기회전송 증가 릴레이 시스템의 성능)

  • Recently, the opportunistic incremental relaying systems have been studied to improve the system performance effectively in wireless fading channel. Most of the performance analysis of the system includes a source-destination direct link. And there are few analysis which consider source-relay-destination indirect paths only. Therefore this paper proposes a transmission protocol which relays the source information using the selected relay from the partial channel information at the first stage in an opportunistic incremental relaying system. If the transmission fails, the selected best relay from the full channel information retransmits the information to the destination incrementally. The performance of the proposed system is derived analytically and verified from Monte Carlo simulation. The derived results can be applied to the system design and the performance estimation of the mobile systems and the bidirectional TV broadcasting systems which adapt an opportunistic incremental relaying system.

Economic Evaluation Method Based on Rate of Return for Multiple Investment Alternatives (다수의 투자대안들에 대한 수익률 기준의 경제성 평가방법)

  • There are two methods for evaluating two or more mutually exclusive projects. One is a total investment approach and the other is an incremental investment approach. The former can rank projects by the criterion of the net present value, but the latter can't do it. An incremental investment approach is only possible when all pairwise alternatives are compared. Thus an incremental investment approach is superior in ranking them over an incremental investment approach. To do so, a principle of comparison must be established. Comparisons of profitability are reasonable when operating the same amount of investment over the same period of time. One principle is that all projects are invested in the largest of the projects. Another principle is that all projects are invested during the longest project life of the projects. In this paper, even if the principle is followed, it will be shown that the external rate of return fails to rank them. However, the productive rate of return criterion would prove to be able to rank them like the net present value standard, provided that the principle of comparison is kept. In addition, rate of returns can be assessed so that all mutually exclusive projects can be compared at once, such as on the criterion of the net present value. That is, it can be also compared with many other returns, such as the profit rates on financial investments or real investments.

  • The relationship is investigated between material modeling of concrete and the evaluation procedure of thermal stress by the hydration heat. In this respect, some important points are suggested to which special attention should be paid to reasonably evaluate the thermal stress using the widely-used structural analysis programs. This study indicates that proper material model should be used to draw incremental stress evaluation that takes into account the change of elastic modulus with time. Some correction techniques are also presented when using the program that don't have proper built-in procedure for the calculation of the thermal stress.

  • Economic evaluations in the healthcare are used to assess economic efficiency of pharmaceuticals and medical interventions such as diagnoses and medical procedures. This study introduces the main concepts of economic evaluation across its key steps: planning, outcome and cost calculation, modeling, cost-effectiveness results, uncertainty analysis, and decision-making. When planning an economic evaluation, we determine the study population, intervention, comparators, perspectives, time horizon, discount rates, and type of economic evaluation. In healthcare economic evaluations, outcomes include changes in mortality, the survival rate, life years, and quality-adjusted life years, while costs include medical, non-medical, and productivity costs. Model-based economic evaluations, including decision tree and Markov models, are mainly used to calculate the total costs and total effects. In cost-effectiveness or costutility analyses, cost-effectiveness is evaluated using the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio, which is the additional cost per one additional unit of effectiveness gained by an intervention compared with a comparator. All outcomes have uncertainties owing to limited evidence, diverse methodologies, and unexplained variation. Thus, researchers should review these uncertainties and confirm their robustness. We hope to contribute to the establishment and dissemination of economic evaluation methodologies that reflect Korean clinical and research environment and ultimately improve the rationality of healthcare policies.

Incremental Cooperative Transmission of Bidirectional Relaying Schemes in Underlay Cognitive Radio (언더레이 인지기술에서 양방향 릴레이 증분 협력 전송에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose an incremental cooperative transmission protocol in two-way underlay cognitive radio networks. In the proposed protocol, two secondary sources attempt to transmit their packet to each other with help of a secondary relay under interference constraint. For performance evaluation, we derive exact closed-form expressions of average outage probability over Rayleigh fading channel. Then, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to verify the derivations. Results present that the simulation and theoretical results are in good agreement and the outage performance of the proposed protocol is better than that of two-way direct transmission protocol.

GPU-based Stereo Matching Algorithm with the Strategy of Population-based Incremental Learning

  • To solve the general problems surrounding the application of genetic algorithms in stereo matching, two measures are proposed. Firstly, the strategy of simplified population-based incremental learning (PBIL) is adopted to reduce the problems with memory consumption and search inefficiency, and a scheme for controlling the distance of neighbors for disparity smoothness is inserted to obtain a wide-area consistency of disparities. In addition, an alternative version of the proposed algorithm, without the use of a probability vector, is also presented for simpler set-ups. Secondly, programmable graphics-hardware (GPU) consists of multiple multi-processors and has a powerful parallelism which can perform operations in parallel at low cost. Therefore, in order to decrease the running time further, a model of the proposed algorithm, which can be run on programmable graphics-hardware (GPU), is presented for the first time. The algorithms are implemented on the CPU as well as on the GPU and are evaluated by experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm offers better performance than traditional BMA methods with a deliberate relaxation and its modified version in terms of both running speed and stability. The comparison of computation times for the algorithm both on the GPU and the CPU shows that the former has more speed-up than the latter, the bigger the image size is.

  • Reports have a significant meaning in time-constrained large transaction environments, such as airplane control systems or wargame simulations. This is due to the necessity of generating reports within a given time limit without restraining the operation performance of large transaction environments. In order to generate reports in large transaction environments while satisfying time-constrained requirements, this paper proposes a model which combines the incremental operation mechanism and materialized view mechanism using triggers and stored procedures. Further, the implementation and evaluation of the proposed model provides the Identification of the characteristics of the proposed model.

Seismic performance evaluation of buckling restrained braced frames (BRBF) using incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis method (IDA)

  • In this paper, the seismic behavior of BRBF structures is studied and compared with special concentric braced frames (SCBF). To this purpose, three BRBF and three SCBF structures with 3, 5 and 10 stories are designed based on AISC360-5 and modelled using OpenSees. These structures are loaded in accordance with ASCE/SEI 7-10. Incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis (IDA) are performed on these structures for 28 different accelerograms and the median IDA curves are used to compare seismic capacity of these two systems. Results obtained, indicates that BRBF systems provide higher capacity for the target performance level in comparison with SCBF systems. And structures with high altitude (in this study, 5 and 10 stories) with the possibility of exceeding the collapse prevention performance level, further than lower altitude (here 3 floors) structures.

Performance-based evaluation of strap-braced cold-formed steel frames using incremental dynamic analysis

  • This study is an effort to clearly recognize the seismic damages occurred in strap-braced cold formed steel frames. In order to serve this purpose, a detailed investigation was conducted on 9 full scale strap-braced CFS walls and the required data were derived from the results of the experiments. As a consequence, quantitative and qualitative damage indices have been proposed in three seismic performance levels. Moreover, in order to assess seismic performance of the strap-braced CFS frames, a total of 8 models categorized into three types are utilized. Based on the experimental results, structural characteristics are calculated and all frames have been modeled as single degree of freedom systems. Incremental dynamic analysis using OPENSEES software is utilized to calculate seismic demand of the strap-braced CFS walls. Finally, fragility curves are calculated based on three damage limit states proposed by this paper. The results showed that the use of cladding and other elements, which contribute positively to the lateral stiffness and strength, increase the efficiency of strap-braced CFS walls in seismic events.

Probabilistic seismic evaluation of buckling restrained braced frames using DCFD and PSDA methods

  • In this paper, using the probabilistic methods, the seismic demand of buckling restrained braced frames subjected to earthquake was evaluated. In this regards, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14-storybuildings with different buckling restrained brace configuration (including diagonal, split X, chevron V and Inverted V bracings) were designed. Because of the inherent uncertainties in the earthquake records, incremental dynamical analysis was used to evaluate seismic performance of the structures. Using the results of incremental dynamical analysis, the "capacity of a structure in terms of first mode spectral acceleration", "fragility curve" and "mean annual frequency of exceeding a limit state" was determined. "Mean annual frequency of exceeding a limit state" has been estimated for immediate occupancy (IO) and collapse prevention (CP) limit states using both Probabilistic Seismic Demand Analysis (PSDA) and solution "based on displacement" in the Demand and Capacity Factor Design (DCFD) form. Based on analysis results, the inverted chevron (${\Lambda}$) buckling restrained braced frame has the largest capacity among the considered buckling restrained braces. Moreover, it has the best performance among the considered buckling restrained braces. Also, from fragility curves, it was observed that the fragility probability has increased with the height.
