We performed numerical simulations of blood flow in an arterial cerebral artery aneurysm to investigate the hemodynamic behavior after coil embolization. A patient-specific model was created based on CTA data. We also conducted the coil embolization simulation to obtain the coil placement within the aneurysm. Blood was assumed to be an incompressible Newtonian fluid, and both the vessel and coil were considered rigid walls. The pulsatile boundary condition was applied at the inlet, and the outflow boundary conditions were used at the outlets. Our findings demonstrated that the coil embolization significantly reduces the blood volume flowrate entering the aneurysm by effectively blocking the inflow jet, leading to a decrease in both TAWSS and WSS, especially at the systolic peak in the impingement zone. While several high OSI regions disappeared over the aneurysm surface, we observed high OSI regions with a relatively small area where the coil did not completely occlude the aneurysm. Overall, these results quantitatively analyzed the effectiveness of coil embolization by focusing on hemodynamic indicators, potentially preventing aneurysm rupture. The present work could contribute to the development of patient-specific coil embolization.

In this study, each component of flow noise source of underwater propeller installed to the scale model of the KVLCC2 is investigated and the effect of each noise source on underwater-radiated noise is quantitatively analyzed. The computation domain is set to be the same as the test section of the large cavitation tunnel in the Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering. First, for the high-resolution computation of flow field which is noise source region, the incompressible multiphase Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation is performed. Based on flow simulation results, the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings integral equation is used to predict underwater-radiated noise and its validity is confirmed through the comparison with the tunnel experiment result. For the quantitative comparison on the contribution of each noise source, the spectral levels of sound pressure and power levels predicted using propeller tip-vortex cavitation, blade surface and rudder surface as the integral region of noise sources are investigated. It is confirmed that the cavitation which is monopole noise source significantly contributed to the underwater-radiated noise than propeller blades and rudder which is dipole noise source, and the rudder have more contribution than propeller blades due to the influence of the propeller wake.

A parallel algorithm of bi-conjugate gradient method was developed based on CUDA for parallel computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equations were discretized using splitting P2P1 finite element method. Asymmetric stenotic flow problem was solved to validate the proposed algorithm, and then the parallel performance of the GPU was examined by measuring the elapsed times. Further, the GPU performance for sparse matrix-vector multiplication was also investigated with a matrix of fluid-structure interaction problem. A kernel was generated to simultaneously compute the inner product of each row of sparse matrix and a vector. In addition, the kernel was optimized to improve the performance by using both parallel reduction and memory coalescing. In the kernel construction, the effect of warp on the parallel performance of the present CUDA was also examined. The present GPU computation was more than 7 times faster than the single CPU by double precision.

In this study, noise radiated from a high-speed fan-motor unit for a cordless vacuum cleaner is reduced by designing splitter blades on the existing impeller. First of all, in order to investigate the flow field through a fan-motor unit, especially impeller, the unsteady incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are numerically solved by using computational fluid dynamic technique. With predicted flow field results as input, the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) integral equation is solved to predict aerodynamic noise radiated from the impeller. The validity of the numerical methods is confirmed by comparing the predicted sound pressure spectrum with the measured one. Further analysis of the predicted flow field shows that the strong vortex is formed between the impeller blades. As the vortex induces the loss of the flow field and acts as an aerodynamic noise source, supplementary splitter blades are designed to the existing impeller to suppress the identified vortex. The length and position of splitter are selected as design factors and the effect of each design factor on aerodynamic noise is numerically analyzed by using the Taguchi method. From this results, the optimum location and length of splitter for minimum radiated noise is determined. The finally selected design shows lower noise than the existing one.

Eyer since the Prandtl's experiment in 1934 and X-21 airjet test in 1950 both attempting to reduce drag, it was found that controlling the velocities of surface for extremely fast-moving object in the air through suction or injection was highly effective and active method. To obtain the right amount of suction or injection, however, repetitive trial-and error parameter test has been still used up to now. This study started from an attempt to decide optimal amount of suction and injection of incompressible Navier-Stokes by employing optimization techniques. However, optimization with traditional methods are very limited, especially when Reynolds number gets high and many unexpected variables emerges. In earlier study, we have proposed an algorithm to solve this problem by using step by step method in analysis and introducing SQP method in optimization. In this study, we propose more effective and robust algorithm and techniques in solving flow optimization problem.
Nuclear fuel bundles are designed such that the heat flux at a-fuel pin surface should not exceed the critical heat flux (CHF) during normal operation and anticipated transient. Therefore, evaluation of the CHF for fuel bundle is demanded in an exact and reliable manner. One of the major concerns with the current application of CHF correlations is that the CHF based on circular tubes is applied to the fuel bundle subchannel analysis, mainly in terms of the hydraulic diameter with correction factors which may result in a source of possibly large uncertainties in CHF prediction. The hydraulic diameter does not recognize the local properties of fluid nor such effect as the surface curvature; the turbulence action on the convex surface is much more pronounced than that on the concave surface. Even for the tube having concave curvature, the effect of tube diameter on CHF becomes important with decreasing diameter. These facts imply that the convex curvature effect is significant and crucial to the reliable CHF prediction. This paper reviews and discusses analytical and experimental aspects of effect of transverse convex curvature in incompressible turbulent flow and heat transfer, and on CHF. Flow models to quantify this effect are briefly mentioned and future works are recommended.

The application of multiphase flows is increasingly being applied to analyze phenomena such as single phase flows where the fluid boundary changes continuously over time or the problem of mixing a liquid phase and a gas phase. In particular, multiphase flow models that take into account incompressible Newtonian fluids for liquid and gas are often applied to solve the problems of the free water surface such as wave fields. In general, multi-phase flow models require time-based the surface tracking of each fluid's phase boundary, which determines the accuracy of the final calculation of the model. This study evaluates the advection performance of representative VOF-type boundary tracking techniques applied to various CFD numerical codes. The effectiveness of the FCT method to control the numerical flux to minimize the numerical diffusion in the conventional VOF-type boundary tracking method and advection calculation was mainly evaluated. In addition, the possibility of tracking performance of free surface using CIP method (Yabe and Aoki, 1991) was also investigated. Numerical results show that the FCT-VOF method introducing an anti-diffusive flux to precent excessive diffusion is superior to other methods under the confined conditions in this study. The results from this study are expected to be used as an important basic data in selecting free surface tracking techniques applied to various numerical codes.

In the present work, we investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of a turbulent bore, such as tsunami bore and tidal bore, generated by the removal of a gate with water impounded on one side. The bore generation system is similar to that used in a general dam-break problem. In order to the numerical simulation of the formation and propagation of a bore, we consider the incompressible flows of two immiscible fluids, liquid and gas, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations. The interface tracking between two fluids is achieved by the volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique and the M-type cubic interpolated propagation (MCIP) scheme is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. The MCIP method is a low diffusive and stable scheme and is generally extended the original one-dimensional CIP to higher dimensions, using a fractional step technique. Further, large eddy simulation (LES) closure scheme, a cost-effective approach to turbulence simulation, is used to predict the evolution of quantities associated with turbulence. In order to verify the applicability of the developed numerical model to the bore simulation, laboratory experiments are performed in a wave tank. Comparisons are made between the numerical results by the present model and the experimental data and good agreement is achieved.

In this study, a new topology optimization method is developed to design heat-dissipating structure with forced convection. To cool down electrical devices or mechanical machines, two types of convection models have been widely used: the natural convection model with a large Archimedes number and the forced convection with a small Archimedes number. In these days, lots of engineering application areas such as electrochemical conversion devices (Fuel cell) or rocket propulsion engines adopt the forced convection to dissipate the generated heat. Therefore, to our knowledge, it becomes an important issue to design flow channels inside which the generated heat dissipate. Thus, this paper studies optimal topological designs considering fluid-heat interactions. To consider the effect of the advection in the heat transfer problem, the incompressible Navier-stokes equation is solved. This paper numerically studies the coupling phenomena and presents optimal channel design considering forced convection.

In this talk, a reduced-order modeling methodology based on centroidal Voronoi tessellations (CVT's)is introduced. CVT's are special Voronoi tessellations for which the generators of the Voronoi diagram are also the centers of mass (means) of the corresponding Voronoi cells. The discrete data sets, CVT's are closely related to the h-means clustering techniques. Even with the use of good mesh generators, discretization schemes, and solution algorithms, the computational simulation of complex, turbulent, or chaotic systems still remains a formidable endeavor. For example, typical finite element codes may require many thousands of degrees of freedom for the accurate simulation of fluid flows. The situation is even worse for optimization problems for which multiple solutions of the complex state system are usually required or in feedback control problems for which real-time solutions of the complex state system are needed. There hava been many studies devoted to the development, testing, and use of reduced-order models for complex systems such as unsteady fluid flows. The types of reduced-ordered models that we study are those attempt to determine accurate approximate solutions of a complex system using very few degrees of freedom. To do so, such models have to use basis functions that are in some way intimately connected to the problem being approximated. Once a very low-dimensional reduced basis has been determined, one can employ it to solve the complex system by applying, e.g., a Galerkin method. In general, reduced bases are globally supported so that the discrete systems are dense; however, if the reduced basis is of very low dimension, one does not care about the lack of sparsity in the discrete system. A discussion of reduced-ordering modeling for complex systems such as fluid flows is given to provide a context for the application of reduced-order bases. Then, detailed descriptions of CVT-based reduced-order bases and how they can be constructed of complex systems are given. Subsequently, some concrete incompressible flow examples are used to illustrate the construction and use of CVT-based reduced-order bases. The CVT-based reduced-order modeling methodology is shown to be effective for these examples and is also shown to be inexpensive to apply compared to other reduced-order methods.
