  • The behavior of shear crack is investigated analytically to get a better understanding of the fundamental natura of shear failure mechanism in reinforced concrete beams. Emphasis is placed on the exploration of the major cause of the initiation and the propagation of an inclined shear crack in reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement. By utilizing a finite element method incorporated into a fracture mechanics, the quantitative reponse of reinforced concrete beams with varying amounts of cracking is examined. Progressions of the cracks are simulated. The analysis gives the information of the state of the stresses at various cracking stages. The results are compared with the experimental results.

  • For box girders in which the longitudinal tendon is profiled in the inclined webs. longitudinal prestressing force will induce transverse effects as well as longitudinal ones. In this paper. the method estimating transverse effects induced by longitudinal prestressing is proposed. The transverse effects in the slabs of box girders due to longitudinal prestressing are investigated. Numerical analyses are carried out depending on the parameters such as web inclination and ratio of girder length to tendon eccentricity. Analysis results show that when only prestressing are considered the magnitude of stresses in the slabs of box grder is not so large. However. if the other stresses due to dead and live load et al. are superposed on these stresses. it may be that the longitudinal prestressing effects are significant.

  • For box girders in which the longitudinal tendon is profiled in the inclined webs, longitudinal prestressing force will induce transverse effects as well as longitudinal ones. In this paper, the method to estimate transverse effects induced by longitudinal prestressing is proposed. The concept of transverse equivalent loading which is calculated through longitudinal prestressing analysis is developed. The transverse stress in slabs of box girders due to longitudinal prestressing are investigated. The comparison of numerical results of the proposed method and those of folded plate method represents that the method is reasonable. Numerical analyses are carried out depending on the parameters such as web inclination and ratio of girder length to tendon eccentricity. Analysis results show that when only prestressing are considered the magnitude of transverse stress in slabs of box girder is not so large. However, if the other stresses due to dead and live load et al. are superposed on these stresses, it may be that the longitudinal prestressing effects are significant.

  • This study was to investigate structural behavior of composite structure beams composed of end-RC. center-Steel according to respective reinforcing method for connection zone composed of different materials (SRC) while attaching main bars on steel-flange by welding. The main reinforcing methods are as follows ; non-reinforcing, vertical shear reinforcing (type-stirrup), inclined reinforcing(type-x), horizontal reinforcing(type-web, 0.3L), double horizontal reinforcing (type-web, 0.3L), vertical reinforcing (type-flange, 0.3L). Consequently, It showed little difference in structural properties like ductility and strength according to the attaching method of main bars. For Maximizing the structural properties of composite beam, the most effective methods were vertical reinforcing one and double horizontal reinforcing one.

  • This paper presents a stress field approach for the shear capacity of stirrup-reinforced concrete beams that explicitly incorporates the contribution of principal tensile stresses in concrete. This formulation represents an extension of the variable strut inclination method adopted in the Eurocode 2. In this model, the stress fields in web concrete consist of principal compressive stresses inclined at an angle θ combined with principal tensile stresses oriented along a direction orthogonal to the former (the latter being typically neglected in other formulations). Three different failure mechanisms are identified, from which the strut inclination angle and the corresponding shear strength are determined through equilibrium principles and the static theorem of limit analysis, similar to the EC-2 approach. It is demonstrated that incorporating the contribution of principal tensile stresses of concrete slightly increases the ultimate inclination angle of the compression struts as well as the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams. The proposed stress field approach improves the prediction of the shear strength in comparison with the Eurocode 2 model, in terms of both accuracy (mean) and precision (CoV), as demonstrated by a broad comparison with more than 200 published experimental results from the literature.

  • The objective of the present study is to verify the validity of a new truss model for evaluating the contribution by arch action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. The new truss model is based on the relationship between shear and bending moment in a beam subjected to combined shear and bending. The compatibility condition of the shear deformation that deviates from Bernoulli bending plane is formulated utilizing the smeared truss idealization with an inclined compression chord. The Modified Compression Filed Theory is employed to calculate the shear deformation of the web, and the relative axial displacements of the compression and the tension chord by the shear flow are also calculated. From this shear compatibility condition in a beam, the shear contribution by the arch action is numerically decoupled. Then the validity of the model is examined by applying the model to some selected test beams in literatures. On the basis of the analytical results, the contribution by the web to shear resistance can be constant and have an excellent linear correlation with the web reinforcement ratio. The present decoupling approach may provide a simple way for the assessment of the role of each parameter or mechanism that affects the ultimate shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams.

  • The shear behavior of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams subject to concentrated loads has been scrutinized experimentally to verify the influence of the structural parameters such as concrete strength, shear span-depth ratio, and web reinforcements. A total of 42 reinforced concrete deep beams with compressive strengths of 250 kg/$cm^2$ and 500 kg/$cm^2$ has been tested at the laboratory under one or two-point top loading. The shear span-depth ratio have been taken as three types of 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2, and the horizontal and vertical shear reinforcements ratio, ranging from 0.0 to 0.57 percent respectively. In the tests, the effects of the shear span-depth ratio, concrete strength and web reinforcements on the shear strength and crack initiation and propagation have been carefully checked and analyzed. From the tests, it has been observed that the failures of all specimens were due to shear and the shear behaviors of specimens were greatly affected by inclined cracks from the load application points to the supports in shear span. The load bearing capacities have changed significantly depending on the shear span ratio, and the efficiency of horizontal shear reinforcements were increased as the shear span-depth ratio decreased. The test results have been analyzed and compared with the formulas proposed by previous researchers and the design equation from the code. While the shear strengths obtained from the tests showed around 1.4 and 1.9 times higher than the values calculated by CIRIA guide and the domestic code, they were closely coincident with the formulas given by de Paiva's equation.

  • This study aims to investigate the structural performance of hollow-core slab (HCS) memebers with 400 mm thickness. To this end, a total of four HCS specimens were fabricated based on the individual mold method to provide shear reinforcement, unlike the extrusion method. The key variables were chosen as the presence of topping concrete, core-filling concrete, and shear reinforcements. The crack patterns and load-displacement responses of the test specimens were analyzed in detail. Test results showed that inclined shear cracking occurred all the specimens, and that the specimen with shear reinforcement on the web of HCS unit had higher strength and ductility than the specimen without shear reinforcement. In particular, shear reinforcements placed on the web of HCS unit effectively resisted not only to vertical shear force but also to horizontal shear force between the interface of HCS unit and topping concrete. In addition, it was discovered that the method in which shear reinforcements are placed on the web of HCS unit is more effective in improving structural performance than core-filling method.

  • This paper presents a model for evaluating the contribution by arch action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. Based on the relationship between shear and bending moment in beams subjected to combined shear and bending, the behavior of a beam is explicitly divided into two base components of the flexural action and the tied arch action. The results may confirm the rationale of the proposed behavioral model.

  • For the analysis and design of ship structures the generalized slope deflection method(GSDM) taking account of axial elongation effect as well as the bending and shearing deformation is developed. Using the span point concept, the existing slope deflection method is easy to transform the variable section to the equivalent uniform one under the bending moment and the shear force, but it is difficult to analyze the web frame with inclined members because the axial deformation effect is not considered. In the present method, the equilibrium conditions including all force components(i.e. axial force, shear force, bending moment) are formulated at the both ends of the variable section beam, such that the usual space frame stiffness equation which can be solved easily by the matrix method is derived. The accuracy and applicability of the present method is demonstrated by analyzing the ship web frame structures.
