Drilling operation is such an important machining process, which has been wildly applied to the industry, occupied over 30% of whole industry. However, there are many aspects of drilling process should be improved, such as increases of thrust force, surface roughness, and roundness, ect. In this study, we are aiming to reduce the thrust force, surface roughness, and roundness in drilling process. For this purpose, multi facet drills (MFD) of three types that are modified from standard drill (STD) are developed. The first type is multi stair drill (MSD) with shape of stair on relief plane. The second type is rough facet drill (RFD) with shape of round on relief plane. The third type is rough flute drill (RFLD) with shape of round on flute plane. For three types of MFD, we were carried out performance evaluation from the perspective of thrust force, surface roughness and roundness of machined hole. From obtained result, we could confirmed that performance of rough flute drill (RFLD) type is most excellent.

Force balance method is employed to predict forging information such as forging load, tool pressure and normal stress at the surface of tangential velocity discontinuity. The incipient stages of deformation for the plane strain forging of rectangular billets in V-shaped dies of different semi-angles are analysed. To construct an approximate model for the analysis of deformation by the force balance method in the incipient deformation stages, slip-line field is used. When the deformation mode by slip-line method is the same as that by force balance method, the slip-line method and the force balance method give identical solutions. The effects of die angle, coefficient of friction, billet geometries and deforma- tion characteristics are also investigated. In order to verify the validity of force balance analysis, the rigid-plastic finite element simulation for the various forgig parameters are performed and performed and find to be in good agreement.
Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the mechanism for force generation of an insect with tandem wing configuration. Various stroke amplitudes, stroke plane angles and phase difference between the fore- and hind-wings are considered. The Reynolds number is 150 based on the chord length and maximum translation velocity of the wing. When an insect requires high lift such as takeoff, it flaps its wings in parallel at a lower stroke plane angle and a bigger stroke amplitude than those in the hovering. With wings in counter-stroke, the lift fluctuations decrease, and moreover mean lift force decreases. Interactions among the fore-wing, hind-wing and vortices are examined to explain the force variations

A study of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) was conducted on the Ordovician-Eocene strata in the Taebaek area. The study area is a northeastern part of the Okchon belt, sometimes called as Paegunsan Synclinal Area. A total of 600 independently oriented samples were collected from 60 sites covering the whole area. With a few exception of late Cretaceous-Eocene volcanic rocks, all the sampled strata are nonmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks, mainly sandstones. Among the 60 sites, 5 sites showed flow lineation lying on the bedding plane, 11 sites showed load foliation parallel to the bedding plane, and 21 sites showed tectonic foliation unrelated to the bedding plane. The tectonic foliations are defined by $k_1-k_2$ ($k_{max}-k_{int}$) anisotropy plane, and are considered as a result of tectonic forces acted perpendicularly to the foliation plane in the geologic past. Regardless of sample-site locations, tectonic force directions defined by $k_3$ ($k_{min}$) axis perpendicular to the tectonic foliation are consistent among the strata of the same geologic age. In the course of geologic time, however, the tectonic force directions showed a clockwise rotation: approximately E-W in the Ordovician sites, NW-SE in the Permian sites, N-S in the Triassic sites, and lastly NE-SW in the late Cretaceous-Eocene sites. The pre-Permian directions showed better clustering in the in-situ (geographic) coordinates, while the younger directions become better clustered after the bedding-tilt correction. It is interpreted that the major tectonic structures of the Taebaek area were controlled by the above-mentioned tectonic forces: The Paegunsan Syncline and the Hambaeksan Fault must have been generated by the NW-SE force of late Permian-early Triassic time. It was then reactivated in the reverse (dextral) sense by the N-S force of Triassic time. The Osipchon Fault in the eastern part of the study area was either generated or reactivated by the NE-SW force of late Cretaceous-Eocene time. The Permo-Triassic NW-SE force should be an expression of the Songnim Disturbance in the Korean peninsula, which is in turn related with the SCB/NCB collision in China.
This study is to investigate the distribution of the radiation force exerted on a homogeneous sphere by two circularly-polarized counterpropagating $TEM_{00}$ laser beams. The time-averaged expressions of the rediation force are derived for both cases of two interfering $TEM_{00}$ laser beams and a standing plane electromagnetic wave. The radiation force is numerically calculated and the physical interpretations of computed results are presented. The results in this paper will be useful in the optical levitation experiment using two counterpropagating $TEM_{00}$ laser beams or a standing plane electomagnetic wave.
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of head and neck(HN) position in the transverse plane on the static production of elbow extension force in the involved(paretic) upper extremity of patients with hemiparesis. On this study, thirty patients who had experienced a cerebrovascular accident were matched with neurologically intact subjects. Force of static elbow extension was tested with a hand-held dynamometer, twice with the HN rotated toward the paretic side and twice with the HN rotated toward the non-paretic side. Elbow extension force differed significantly with the HN in the two position in patients with hemiparesis but not in normal persons(${\alpha}$=0.05). Results of this study support the conclusion that HN position in the transverse plane influences the production of static elbow extension force on the paretic side in patients with hemiparesis.

In this paper, we propose a new digital image stabilization scheme based on the bit-plane matching. In the proposed algorithm, the conventional motion estimation algorithms are applied to the binary images extracted from the bit-plane images. It is shown that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm can be significantly reduced by replacing the arithmetic calculations with the binary Boolean functions, while the accuracy of motion estimation is maintained. Furthermore, an adaptive algorithm for selecting a bit-plane in consideration of changes in external illumination can provide the robustness of the proposed algorithm. We compared the proposed algorithm with existing algorithms using root mean square error (RMSE) on the basis of the brute-force method, and proved experimentally that the proposed method detects the camera motion more accurately than existing algorithms. In addition, the proposed algorithm performs digital image stabilization with less computation.

Atomically thin graphene is the ideal model system for studying nanoscale friction due to its intrinsic two-dimensional anisotropy. Furthermore, modulating its tribological properties could be an important milestone for graphene-based micro and nano-mechanical devices. Here, we report that the tribological properties can be easily altered via simple chemical modifications of the graphene surface. Friction force microscopy measurements show that hydrogenated, fluorinated, and oxidized graphenes exhibit, 2-, 6-, and 7-fold enhanced nanoscale friction on their surfaces, respectively, compared to pristine graphene. The measured nanoscale friction should be associated with the adhesive and elastic properties of the chemically modified graphenes. Density functional theory calculations suggest that, while the adhesive properties of chemically modified graphenes are marginally reduced down to ~30%, the out-of-plane elastic properties are drastically increased up to 800%. Based on these findings, we propose that nanoscale friction on graphene surfaces is characteristically different from that on conventional solid surfaces; stiffer graphene exhibits higher friction, whereas a stiffer three-dimensional solid generally exhibits lower friction. The unusual friction mechanics of graphene is attributed to the intrinsic mechanical anisotropy of graphene, which is inherently stiff in plane, but remarkably flexible out of plane. The out-of-plane flexibility can be modulated up to an order of magnitude by chemical treatmentof the graphene surface. The correlation between the measured nanoscale friction and the calculated out-of-plane flexibility suggests that the frictional energy in graphene is mainly dissipated through the out-of-plane vibrations, or the flexural phonons of graphene.

This research presents a three-dimensional modeling technique for a flexible sheet. A relative coordinate formulation is used to represent the kinematics of the sheet. The three-dimensional flexible sheet is modeled by multi-rigid bodies interconnected by out-of-plane joints and plate force elements. A parent node is designated as a master body and is connected to the ground by a floating joint to cover the rigid motion of the flexible sheet in space. Since the in-plane deformation of a sheet such as a paper and a film is relatively small, compared to out-of-plane deformation, only the out-of-plane deformation is accounted for in this research. The recursive formulation has been adopted to solve the equations of motion efficiently. An example is presented to show the validity of the proposed method.
