  • The research comprehensively studies the axial compression performance of T-shaped concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular (CTST) long columns after fire exposure. Initially, a series of tests investigate the effects of heating time, load eccentricity, and stiffeners on the column's performance. Furthermore, Finite Element (FE) analysis is employed to establish temperature and mechanical field models for the T-shaped CTST long column with stiffeners after fire exposure, using carefully determined key parameters such as thermal parameters, constitutive relations, and contact models. In addition, a parametric analysis based on the numerical models is conducted to explore the effects of heating time, section diameter, material strength, and steel ratio on the axial compressive bearing capacity, bending bearing capacity under normal temperature, as well as residual bearing capacity after fire exposure. The results reveal that the maximum lateral deformation occurs near the middle of the span, with bending increasing as heating time and eccentricity rise. Despite a decrease in axial compressive load and bending capacity after fire exposure, the columns still exhibit desirable bearing capacity and deformability. Moreover, the obtained FE results align closely with experimental findings, validating the reliability of the developed numerical models. Additionally, this study proposes a simplified design method to calculate these mechanical property parameters, satisfying the ISO-834 standard. The relative errors between the proposed simplified formulas and FE models remain within 10%, indicating their capability to provide a theoretical reference for practical engineering applications.

  • When concrete is confined triaxially, its strength and toughness are enhanced. Hoop reinforcements or transverse reinforcements laterally confine concrete in the case of a RC member and an outer tube confines concrete in a CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) member. But biaxially confined concrete. such as concrete in a hollow R.C member, does not have much enhanced strength and toughness. In this study, a new-type member. which is a hollow CFT member named as an ICH(Internally Confined Hollow) CFT member, was developed to overcome the low ductility of the hollow member and the high cost of the CFT member. A material nonlinear model for the concrete in an CFT member or an ICH CFT member was developed and coded as a computer program based on Mander's concrete model. Analysis results were verified with experimental results and the developed analysis model showed reasonable and accurate results.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the seismic behavior of the bracing members. Lee and Goel's (1987) concrete filling in the hollow structural section (HSS) reduced the severity of local buckling and increased the fracture life. However, concrete filling in the HSS did not prevent the occurrence of local buckling in the midsection of the bracing member, which resulted in continuous strength degradation. This study investigated the seismic behavior of the concrete-filled HSS bracing member, which is reinforced by ribs in the midsection of the bracing member. The main variable of the specimens is rib length. The test results showed that buckling mode, cyclic compression strength, and energy dissipation capacity of the bracing members were affected by rib length. Specimen reinforced with ribs with a length of 63% had better structural performance.

  • Recently, there are increasing much concerns about repair and rehabilitation works for aged Concrete Structures which had been constructed on around the 1970's for rapid economic growth in Korea. In particular, it is believed that there are many aged concrete slabs for Highway bridges in these days. Thus new construction method of concrete slabs are strongly needed to minimize the traffic congestion during the repair works. The objective of this research is to develop the new constructional method of concrete slab in bridge structure, which can contribute to minimize the traffic congestion to be occurred during the repair and rehabilitation works of aged concrete slab, and can also assure the reliable quality through the minimization of in-situ works at the site. I-beams with punch holes will be manufactured in accordance with the specification in the factory, and will be preassembled into the panel. After erecting the preassembled panels in the site, concrete will be poured into the slab panel. This research is to investigate physical properties of I-Beam with punch holes itself, and then to investigate structural properties of assembled I-Beam panels through static and fatigue test, of which result can be utilized for the development of the new constructional method for concrete slab in bridge structure.

  • Steel encased composite columns are widely used due to their excellent structural performance in terms of stiffness, strength, and ductility. However, experimental studies were usually for the columns having higher steel ratio $(3-4\%)$. There are two different design concepts for SRC columns. ACI-318 specifies the design strength of the column using the same concept of reinforced concrete columns. AISC-LRFD specifies the P-M diagram using the concept of steel column. In this paper, SRC columns have the steel ratio of $0.53\%\;and\;1.06\%$. From the test results, ACI-318 specifications showed better evaluation of SRC columns having low steel ratio. H beam and steel tube partially filled with concrete were embedded in concrete. Flexural tests showed considerably high ductility.

  • Fiber reinforced composite materials have various advantages in mechanical and chemical aspects. Not only high fatigue and chemical resistance, but also high specific strength and stiffness are attained, and therefore, damping characteristics are beneficial to marine piles. Since piles used for marine structures are subjected to compression and bending as well, detailed research is necessary. Current study examine the mechanical behavior under flexural and/or compressive loads using concrete filled fiber reinforced plastic composite piles, which include large size diameter. 25 pile specimens which have various size of diameters and lengths were fabricated using hand lay-up or filament winding method to see the effect of fabrication method. The inner diameters of test specimens ranged from 165 mm to 600 mm, and the lengths of test specimens ranged from 1,350 mm to 8,000 mm. The strengths of the fill-in concrete were 27 and 40 MPa. Fiber volumes used in circumferential and axial directions are varied in order to see the difference. For some tubes, spiral inner grooves were fabricated to reduce shear deformation between concrete and tube. It was observed that the piles made using filament winding method showed higher flexural stiffness than those made using hand lay-up. The flexural stiffness of piles decreases from the early loading stage, and this phenomenon does not disappear even when the inner spiral grooves were introduced. It means that the relative shear deformation between the concrete and tube wasn't able to be removed.

  • Cast-in-place concrete-filled hollow PC (HPC) columns are used to reduce lifting load of heavy-weight PC columns and to improve the structural integrity of joints. In the present study, a new type of HPC column was proposed to improve the productivity and structural integrity of the concrete. To form the hollow PC columns, a permanent inner form was prefabricated using structural deck plates and penetrated lateral bars. Half-scale specimens of four HPC columns were tested under combined axial compression and lateral cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic resistance. In the design of test specimens, various parameters such as the spacing of lateral re-bars, the use of steel fiber, and the thickness of PC cover were considered. The test results showed that the proposed HPC columns generally exhibited satisfactory load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity without brittle failure of PC. If closely spaced hoops or fiber reinforcements are used for PC, the deformation capacity can be improved further by restraining PC spalling.

  • In this paper, 18 square CFT columns filled with high-strength concrete were tested under concentric or eccentric axial loading. Two parameters of the experimental program included the buckling length-section depth ratio ($L_K$/D) and the eccentricity of the appled compressive load (e). In additon, mechanical properties such as the compressive concrete strength and compressive and tensile steel strength were measured and incorporated into the material models for the stress-strain relationships of concrete and steel. This model was used in an elasto-plastic analysis in order to predict the behavior of the slender CFT columns. Observtions of the failure mode during the tests under axial loadig were also presented. The strengths obtained from the analysis. Recommendations for Design, and Constructions of CFT structures were presented, as verified by the experimental results.

  • This study, to develop the technology of the fire resistance design of CFT structure based on fire resistance performance design, was suppose to use as basic data for performance design through a measure of temperature and deformation of the CFT specimen as parameter is the concrete compressive strength and load ratio. In accordance with KS F 2257-1 and 7, 24 MPa and 40 MPa and the load ratio of 0.9, 0.6 and 0.2 were imposed on a square column and as a result of evaluating in accordance with the fire resistance criteria, in case of 24 MPa, the fire resistance performance was improved by 73 minutes when the load ratio was reduced by 0.3. And when it comes to 40 MPa, the fire resistance was 31 minutes and 180 minutes when a load ratio was 0.6 and 0.2, respectively. As a result of evaluating fire resistant performance depending on variation of internal concrete strength, it proved that the higher the strength the lower the fire resistance.

  • Welded built-up square tubes are manufactured by flare welding at the center of the column width for cold-formed L-shaped four-piece plates and improved composite effect of concrete and steel by vertical inner anchor. Also, the axial resistance of concrete is increased by the thinness of the steel column, and the composite effect of concrete and steel prevents the steel column from local buckling. In this study, we introduced a manufacturing method of built-up square column steel square concrete-filled tubular column with vertical inner anchor and superior structural performance of the square stub column verified by the structural test for 15 specimens with parameters of shape of tube (built-up square tube, general steel tube), width over thickness of the steel tube (B/t=50, 58, 67) and the strength of concrete (f'c=10MPa, 50MPa).
