  • Concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns have been widely used in moment resisting frame structures both in seismic zones. This paper discusses the design of such members based on the advanced methods introduced in the 2005 AISC Specification and the 2005 Seismic Provisions. This study focuses particularly on design following both linear and nonlinear methods utilizing equivalent static and dynamic loads for low-rise moment frames. The paper begins with an examination of the significance of pseudo-elastic design interaction equations and the plastic ductility demand ratios due to combined axial compressive force and bending moment in CFT members. Based on advanced computational simulations for a series of five-story composite moment frames, this paper then investigates both building performance and new techniques to evaluate building damage during a strong earthquake. It is shown that 2D equivalent static analyses can provide good design approximations to the force distributions in moment frames subjected to large inelastic lateral loads. Dynamic analyses utilizing strong ground motions generally produce higher strength ratios than those from equivalent static analyses, but on more localized basis. In addition, ductility ratios obtained from the nonlinear dynamic analysis are sufficient to detect which CFT columns undergo significant deformations.

  • This study focused on the investigation of strength development and permeability of LMC(latex modified concrete) and RSLMC(rapid-setting cement latex modified concrete) as the latex content, cement types and w/c ratio variated. The compressive strength of latex modified concrete decreased slightly and the flexural strength increased quitely at the latex content of 15%. This may due to the flexibility of latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, respectively. The permeability test results showed that the permeability of LMC was considerably lower than that of conventional concrete. In the RSLMC's tests of permeability to chloride ion indicated very low permeability at an early age, which nay be due to the early formation of needle-shape ettringites and latex film.

  • The double composite box girder is a structural system filled with concrete at the bottom of the steel box in the negative moment region increasing the flexural strengths. Flexural strengths of the double composite steel box girders are investigated through a series of the experimental tests and the numerical analysis. The experimental tests are performed on the three kinds of steel box girders with the different concrete depths including loom, 15cm, and 20cm. Moment-curvature relations are calculated based on the sectional analysis method describing the nonlinear natures of concrete and steel. In the finite element analysis the nonlinear nature of concrete is described based on the three dimensional four-parameter constitutive model recently developed and that of steel is described based on von Mises failure criterion. The ultimate flexural capacities of the box girders predicted using sectional analysis and finite element analysis show good agreement with those of the experiments.

  • A hybrid double skin concrete filled (HDSCF) circular steel tube column is proposed in this study. The yield strength of the outer steel tube is larger than 690MPa and the inner tube has less strength. In order to achieve efficiency with the high strength outer tube, a feasibility study on reducing the thickness of the tube below the specified design codes for CFTs was conducted based on an experimental approach. The experiment also took variables such as thickness of the inner tube, hollow ratio, and strength of concrete into consideration to investigate the behavior of the HDSCF column. In order to estimate the applicability of design equations for CFTs to the HDSCF column, test results from CFT and HDSCF columns with design codes were compared. It was found that the axial compressive performance of the proposed HDSCF column is equivalent to that of the conventional CFT member irrespective of design variables. Furthermore, the design equation for a circular CFT given by EC4 is applicable to estimate the ultimate strength of the HDSCF circular steel tube column.

  • So far, square concrete filled tubular(CFT) columns have been used in a limited width thickness ratio. The reason is that local buckling occurs in steel tube easily. Once the local buckling occurs, the confinement effect of steel tube on concrete disappears. In this study, we developed welded built-up square steel tube with reinforcement which are placed at the center of the tube width acts as an anchor. 3 specimens of slender welded built-up square CFT columns and 3 specimens of slender welded built-up square steel tube columns were manufactured with parameters of width(B) of steel tube, width thickness ratio(B/t). we conducted a experimental test on the 6 specimens under eccentric load, and evaluated the structural resistance and behavior of 6 specimens.

  • This paper deals with the experimental study on strength the strength and deformation characteristics of short circular Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST) columns. Effect of vertical stiffeners on the behavior of the column is studied under axial compressive loading. Intermittently welded vertical stiffeners are used to strengthen the tubes. Stiffeners are attached to the inner surface of tube by welding through pre drilled holes on the tube. The variable of the study is the spacing of the weld between stiffeners and circular tube. A total of 5 specimens with different weld spacing (60 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm and 350 mm) were prepared and tested. Short CFST columns of height 350 mm, outer tube diameter of 165 mm and thickness of 4.5 mm were used in the study. Concrete of cube compressive strength $41N/mm^2$ and steel tubes with yield strength $310N/mm^2$ are adopted. The test results indicate that the strength and deformation of the circular CFST column is found to be significantly influenced by the weld spacing. The ultimate axial load carrying capacity was found to increase by 11% when the spacing of weld is reduced from 350 mm to 60 mm. The vertical stiffeners are found to effective in enhancing the initial stiffness and ductility of CFST columns. The prediction models were developed for strength and deformation of CFST columns. The prediction is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding test data.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the structural performance of joints between modules with steel plate press forming type non-symmetric cross section. The main experimental variables are direction of load, whether vertical bolts are fastened, and whether the concrete inside the column is filled. A total of three experiments were performed for each variable. Experimental results show that the behavior of the joints dominated by the local buckling deformation of the upper and lower beam flanges of the module joints, and the final failure was the fracture of the column-beam welds. In case of short side direction, it is possible to secure the performance of intermediate moment frame (0.02 rad). In case of long side direction, it is evaluated that the performance of special moment frame (0.04 rad) is secured regardless of whether or not concrete is infilled in the column.

  • Concrete-filled double skinned steel tubular (CFDST) columns have been used to construct modern structures such as tall buildings and bridges as well as infrastructures as they provide better, lesser weight, and greater stiffness in structural performance than conventional reinforced concrete or steel members. Different shapes of CFDST columns may be needed to satisfy the architectural and aesthetic criteria. In the study, three-dimensional FE simulations of circular and elliptical CFDST columns under axial compression were developed and verified through the experimental test data from the perspectives of full load-displacement histories, ultimate axial strengths, and failure modes. The verified FE models were used to investigate and compare the structural performance of CFDST columns with circular and elliptical cross-section shapes by evaluating the overall load-deformation curves, interaction stress-deformation responses, and composite actions of the column. At last, the accuracy of available design models in predicting the ultimate axial strengths of CFST columns were investigated. Research results showed that circular and elliptical CFDST column behaviors were generally similar. The overall structural performance of circular CFDST columns was relatively improved compared to the elliptical CFDST column.

  • To improve concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns, an octagonal concrete-filled tube (OCFT) column was developed. Because the OCFT column requires a small boring diameter, the OCFT column is suitable for Top-Down construction method. In this study, the compression performance of OCFT column to be used as Top-Down pile foundation was verified using centrifuge equipment. Under 12 g centrifugal acceleration, the bearing capacities of the pile foundations of OCFT and H-shaped sections were tested. When the pile foundations were embedded in soil of full depth, 45 % of the design strength, which was assumed to be the construction load, was supported by the OCFT and H-shaped sections in the elastic states. When the pile foundations were embedded in soil of half depth, the buckling of the pile foundations was not investigated. After the loading test, the rock at the bottom of pile foundation, which had a strength of 3.5 MPa, was not damaged due to 45 % of the design strength.
