Seismic fragility analysis of wood frame building in hilly region

  • A comprehensive study on seismic performance of wood frame building in hilly regions is presented. Specifically, seismic fragility assessment of a typical wood frame building at various locations of the northeast region of India are demonstrated. A three-dimensional simplified model of the wood frame building is developed with due consideration to nonlinear behaviour of shear walls under lateral loads. In doing so, a trilinear model having improved capability to capture the force-deformation behaviour of shear walls including the strength degradation at higher deformations is proposed. The improved capability of the proposed model to capture the force-deformation behaviour of shear wall is validated by comparing with the existing experimental results. The structural demand values are obtained from nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA) of the three-dimensional wood frame model considering the effect of uncertainty due to record to record variation of ground motions and structural parameters as well. The ground motion bins necessary for NLTHA are prepared based on the identified hazard level from probabilistic seismic hazard analysis of the considered locations. The maximum likelihood estimates of the lognormal fragility parameters are obtained from the observed failure cases and the seismic fragilities corresponding to different locations are estimated accordingly. The results of the numerical study show that the wood frame constructions commonly found in the region are likely to suffer minor cracking or damage in the shear walls under the earthquake occurrence corresponding to the estimated seismic hazard level; however, poses negligible risk against complete collapse of such structures.

  • In this study, centrifugal model tests were performed to evaluate the stress sharing between SCP and surrounding clayey soil at composite ground improved by sand compaction pile with the low area replacement ratio. The SCPs were formed by the "frozen pile" method and pressure cells were installed on pile and surrounding clayey soil to observe stress sharing characteristics. As a result of centrifugal tests, it is shown that the value of stress concentration ratio is mainly affected by area replacement ratio, loading condition and elapsed time.

  • In this research, the characteristics of settlement and consolidation behavior of the composite ground formation reinforced by Recycled-Aggregate Porous Concrete Pile (RAPP) were evaluated by conducting a series of laboratory chamber tests. The effect of settlement reduction was verified by comparing the settlement of the composite ground formation with that of the unreinforced ground. In addition, it was studied how much the RAPP can accelerate consolidation in assessment of the degree of consolidation in the composite ground formation. The amount of settlement reduction was decreased with an increase on surcharge pressure, but it was greater than that of the SCP method. The RAPP and the SCP showed a similar rate of consolidation.

Association between Helicopter Versus Ground Emergency Medical Services in Inter-Hospital Transport of Trauma Patients (응급의료 전용헬기와 지상 앰뷸런스를 이용한 병원 간 이송에서 외상 환자의 예후 비교)

  • Purpose: To improve outcome of severe trauma patient, the shortening of transport time is needed. Although helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) is still a subject of debate, it must also be considered for trauma system. The aim of this study is to assess whether transport method (HEMS versus ground EMS) is associated with outcome among inter-hospital transport. Methods: All trauma patients transported to regional emergency center by either HEMS or ground EMS from September 2011 to September 2014. We have classified patients according to two groups by transport method. Age younger than 15 years and self-discharged patients were excluded. Results: A total of 427 patients were available for analysis during this period. 60 patients were transported by HEMS and 367 patients were transported by ground EMS. HEMS group had higher mortality than ground EMS group (23.3% vs 3.5%; p<0.001), and included more patients with excess mortality ratio adjusted injury severity score (EMR-ISS) above 25 (91.7% vs 48.8%; p<0.001). In the multivariable regression analysis, HEMS was not associated with improved outcome compared with ground EMS, but only EMR-ISS was associated with a mortality of patients (odds ratio, 1.06; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.09). Conclusion: In this study, helicopter emergency medical services transport was not associated with a decreased of mortality among the trauma patients who inter-hospital transported to the regional emergency center.

An Improved Tracking Parameter File Generation Method using Azimuth Fixing Method (방위각 고정 기법을 이용한 개선된 Tracking Parameter File 생성 방법)

  • A LEO satellite transmits recorded images to a ground station using an X-band antenna during contact. The X-band antenna points to the ground station according to a TPF (tracking parameter file) during communication time. A TPF generation software generates azimuth and elevation profile which make the antenna point to the ground station using satellite orbit and attitude information and mission information including recording and downlink operation. When the satellite passes above the ground station, azimuth velocity increases rapidly so that jitter may occur if the azimuth velocity is in specific range. In case of realtime mission in which the satellite perform recording and downlink simultaneously, azimuth velocity must be lower than specific value to prevent image blur due to jitter effect. The method to point one virtual ground station has limitation of azimuth velocity reduction. In this paper, we propose the azimuth fixing method to reduce azimuth velocity of X-band antenna. The experimental results show that azimuth velocity of the X-band antenna is remarkably reduced using proposed method.

  • The most of horizontal drainages, which is composed of the aggregates made of sand and crushed stone, are used to improve the soft ground. However, where the aggregates are used as the horizontal drainage, it often brings about the delay of consolidation. For this reason, the horizontal drain pipe system is applied to properly improve the soft ground using a drainage pipe instead of horizontal drainage. This system is direct drain method for disappearing the excess porewater pressure which is caused by placing of fill on the soft ground. The large-scale field test was conducted in order to evaluate the applicability and constructability of the horizontal drain pipe system. The settlement characteristics of improved ground with horizontal drain pipe system was observed. It is also compared to the conventional soft ground improvement method to confirm its effectiveness.

A case Study on Application of Granular Compaction Pile in Fly Ash Landfill Area (Fly ash로 매립된 지역에서 쇄석다짐말뚝 적용에 관한 사례연구)

  • In this study, the effect of ground improvement was to be verified by granular compaction pile from the ground reclaimed with Fly Ash landfill site. The depth and strength parameters of the Fly ash layer was determined using the ground investigation and cone penetration test. And the STONE C program was used to predict the strength parameter, bearing capacity and settlement of the improved ground. As a result of the plate bearing test, the bearing capacity of improvement ground was higher than the design load and the settlement was smaller than the reference value. After the construction, the improvement effect by the cone penetration test was confirmed. The cone penetration resistance value($q_c$) increased by 250% to 500% and the effect was excellent.

Dynamic behavior of submerged floating tunnels at the shore connection considering the use of flexible joints

  • When a submerged floating tunnel is connected to the ground, there is a risk of stress concentration at the shore connection owing to the displacement imbalance caused by low confinement pressures in water and high confinement pressures in the ground. Here, the effects of the boundary condition and stiffness of the joints installed at the shore connection on the behaviors of a submerged floating tunnel and its shore connection were analyzed using a numerical method. The analysis results obtained with fixed and ground boundaries were similar due to the high stiffness of the ground boundary. However, the stability of the shore connection was found to be improved with the ground boundary as a small displacement was allowed at the boundary. The effect of the joint stiffness was evaluated by investigating the dynamic behavior of the submerged floating tunnel, the magnitude of the load acting on the bored tunnel, and the stress distribution at the shore connection. A lower joint stiffness was found to correspond to more effective relief of the stress concentration at the shore connection. However, it was confirmed that joints with low stiffness also increase the submerged floating tunnel displacement and decrease the frequency of the dynamic behavior, causing a risk of increased resonance when wave loads with low frequency are applied. Therefore, it is necessary to derive the optimal joint stiffness that can achieve both stress concentration relief and resonance prevention during the design of shore connections to secure their dynamic stability.

  • Conventional erosion function apparatus (EFA) which has been used to measure the hydraulic resistance of soil was improved to consider direction change of the current flow. Using improved apparatus, hydraulic resistance capacities of the artificially composed clayey soil and sandy soil were compared. Test result shows that scour rates which were measured under the bi-directional flow were much higher than those measured under unidirectional flow for both type soils. Scour rate of sandy soil was higher than that of clayey soil. Velocity averaged scour rate of specimen which was consolidated under the relatively large consolidation pressure is higher than that of specimen which is consolidated under small consolidation pressure, which means scour problem under bidirectional flow may be more serious for the deep seabed ground.

An Influence of Groundwater Flow on Performance of Closed Borehole Heat Exchangers (Part-1) (지하수류가 밀폐형 천공 지중열교환기 성능에 미치는 영향(1))

  • To analyze the influence of various groundwater flow rates (specific discharge) on BHE system with balanced and unbalanced energy loads under assuming same initial temperature (15℃) of ground and groundwater, numerical modeling using FEFLOW was used for this study. When groundwater flow is increased from 1 × 10−7 to 4 × 10−7m/s under balanced energy load, the performance of BHE system is improved about 26.7% in summer and 22.7% at winter time in a single BHE case as well as about 12.0~18.6% in summer and 7.6~8.7% in winter time depending on the number of boreholes in the grid, their array type, and bore hole separation in multiple BHE system case. In other words, the performance of BHE system is improved due to lower avT in summer and higher avT in winter time when groundwater flow becomes larger. On the contrary it is decreased owing to higher avT in summer and lower avT in winter time when the numbers of BHEs in an array are increased, Geothermal plume created at down-gradient area by groundwater flow is relatively small in balanced load condition while quite large in unbalanced load condition. Groundwater flow enhances in general the thermal efficiency by transferring heat away from the BHEs. Therefore it is highly required to obtain and to use adequate informations on hydrogeologic characterristics (K, S, hydraulic gradient, seasonal variation of groundwater temperature and water level) along with integrating groundwater flow and also hydrogeothermal properties (thermal conductivity, seasonal variation of ground temperatures etc.) of the relevant area for achieving the optimal design of BHE system.
