  • Due to the traffic congestion of the city and public transportation-oriented policies in large cities, public transportation is receiving attention and being used increasingly. However, relatively less research on the design and distribution of public transportation network and limitations in quantitative approaches have made implementation and operation practically difficult. Over- or under-supply of transportation routes caused unbalanced connectivity among areas and, thus, differences in time, expenses and metal burden of users traveling the same distances. On the other hand, the Space Syntax theory, originally designed to calculate the connectivity of urban or architectural spaces, helps generate quantitative connectivity of whole space simply based on the spacial structure. This study modified the original Space Syntax algorithm to fit the public transportation problem and showed how it is applied to a transportation network by creating an artificial GIS network.

  • In this paper, a real-time audio broadcasting service system which is robust to loaded traffic on the Internet is developed. For implementing reliable real-time data transfer, the transfer characteristics of TCP/IP and UDP/IP was compared and analyzed. For lost packet recovery, redundant audio data algorithm was used and interleaving technique was applied for scattering consecutive packet loss. Test results showed, when using TCP/IP, pause occurred during playback, and when using UDP/IP, a stable receive rate was noticeable but the quality of the sound was lower than that of uisng TCP/IP. The recovery rate using redundant audio data and interleaving technique is shown in Fig. 9 and the delay is shown in Fig 4.

  • In this paper, we develope the simulation model for Ethernet passive optical networks (Ethernet-PON) by using OPNET. Ethernet-PON is an emerging access network technology that provides a low-cost method of deploying optical access lines. The simulator uses a Request/Grant TDMA MAC protocol based on IEEE 802.3ah EFM. It also executes registration, ranging and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm by exchanging control packets between OLT and ONUs. We have evaluated for success ratio of initial registration process and delay of late registration process. We also have simulated for dynamic TDMA protocol and static TDMA protocol in terms of channel utilization and queueing delay. We expect that this simulator can help to determine various parameters which are considered for designing Ethernet-PON system.

  • Optical character recognition (OCR) has been studied for decades because it is very useful in a variety of places. Nowadays, OCR's performance has improved significantly due to outstanding deep learning technology. Thus, there is an increasing demand for commercial-grade but affordable OCR systems. We have developed a low-cost, high-performance OCR system for the industry with the cheapest embedded developer kit that supports GPU acceleration. To achieve high accuracy for industrial use on limited computing resources, we chose a state-of-the-art text recognition algorithm that uses an end-to-end deep learning network as a baseline model. The model was then improved by replacing the feature extraction network with the best one suited to our conditions. Among the various candidate networks, EfficientNet-B3 has shown the best performance: excellent recognition accuracy with relatively low memory consumption. Besides, we have optimized the model written in TensorFlow's Python API using TensorFlow-TensorRT integration and TensorFlow's C++ API, respectively.

  • Spatial downscaling is often applied to coarse scale satellite products with high temporal resolution for environmental monitoring at a finer scale. An area-to-point regression kriging (ATPRK) algorithm is regarded as effective in that it combines regression modeling and residual correction with area-to-point kriging. However, an open source tool or package for ATPRK has not yet been developed. This paper describes the development and code organization of an R-based spatial downscaling tool, named R4ATPRK, for the implementation of ATPRK. R4ATPRK was developed using the R language and several R packages. A look-up table search and batch processing for computation of ATP kriging weights are employed to improve computational efficiency. An experiment on spatial downscaling of coarse scale land surface temperature products demonstrated that this tool could generate downscaling results in which overall variations in input coarse scale data were preserved and local details were also well captured. If computational efficiency can be further improved, and the tool is extended to include certain advanced procedures, R4ATPRK would be an effective tool for spatial downscaling of coarse scale satellite products.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a low cost inertial navigation system(INS) using an inertial measurement unit(IMU), a digital compass, GPS, and an embedded system. The system has been developed for a transporter that load and unload ship blocks in a shipbuilding yard. When the transporter would move from place to place, they would periodically pass under obstructions that would obscure the GPS signal. This increases the error when estimating the position. Thus the INS has been used to improve position accuracy. INS is also capable of providing continuous estimates of the transporter's position and orientation. Even though IMU is typically very expensive, this INS is made of "low cost" components and the indirect Kalman filtering algorithm.

  • The One Pass Method (OPM) previously presented for the identification of single input single output systems is used to estimate the parameters of a Decentralized Control System (DCS). The OPM is a linear and therefore a simple estimation method. All of the calculations are performed in one pass, and no initial parameter guess, iteration, or powerful search methods are required. These features are of interest especially when the parameters of multi input-output model are estimated. The benefits of the OPM are revealed by comparing its results against those of two recently published methods based on pulse testing. The comparison is performed using two databases from the literature. These databases include single and multi input-output process transfer functions and relevant disturbances. The closed loop responses of these processes are roughly captured by the previous methods, whereas the OPM gives much more accurate results. If the parameters of a DCS are estimated, the OPM yields the same results in multi or single structure implementation. This is a novel feature, which indicates that the OPM is a convenient and practice method for the parameter estimation of multivariable DCSs.

  • A digital in-line holographic particle image velocimetry (HPIV) which can be applied to measure three-dimensional velocity fields of turbulent flows was developed. There are three different implementation methods of HPIV: traditional film-based HPIV, intermediate HPIV and digital HPIV. The traditional film-based HPIV and intermediate HPIV method is rather troublesome to do experiments and takes long calculation time, compared with the digital HPIV, Configuration of the digital in-line HPIV is simple and the data processing routine is similar to conventional 2D PIV methods. The digital HPIV velocity field measurement consists of four steps: recording, numerical reconstruction, particle extraction and velocity extraction. In the velocity extraction process, we improved PTV algorithm to extract the displacement of particle each placed in 3D space. The developed digital in-line HPIV system was applied to a vertical jet flow. The 3D velocity vectors measured by the digital HPIV method in the near field are in a good agreement with 2D PIV results.

  • In a single-phase power factor correction (PFC), the standard cascaded control algorithm using a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller has two main drawbacks: an inability to track sinusoidal current reference and low harmonic compensation capability. These drawbacks cause poor power factor and high harmonics in grid current. To improve these drawbacks, this paper uses a proportional-integral-derivative-resonant (PIDR) controller which combines a type-III PID with proportional-resonant (PR) controllers in the PFC. Based on a small signal model of the PFC, the type-III PID controller was implemented taking into account the bandwidth and phase margin of the PFC system. To adopt the PR controllers, the spectrum of inductor current of the PFC was analyzed in frequency domain. The hybrid PIDR controller were simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC and implemented on a 3 kW PFC prototype hardware. The performance results of the hybrid PIDR controller were compared with those of an individual type-III PID controller. Both controllers were implemented successfully in the single-phase PFC. The total harmonic distortion of the proposed controller were much better than those of the individual type-III PID controller.

  • This paper implements a remote image based metering(IBM) system which capture meter image, recognizes number automatically, and send the data wirelessly through PCS data network. We use existing gas/water meter and get NTSC camera image by installing small monochrome CMOS camera on the meter closely. For remote data transfer, we use SMS (short message service) that is provided by commercial PCS network. We developed DVR(digital video recorder) for capturing meter image and character recognition algorithm. In addition, hardware and software for SMS and meter selector were developed.
