  • Mechanical dampers have been proved to be one of the most effective countermeasures for vibration mitigation of stay cables in various cable-stayed bridges over the world. However, for long stay cables, as the installation height of the damper is restricted due to the aesthetic concern, using passive dampers alone may not satisfy the control requirement of the stay cables. In this connection, semi-active MR dampers have been proposed for the vibration mitigation of long stay cables. Although various studies have been carried out on the implementation of MR dampers on stay cables, the optimal damping performance of the cable-MR damper system has yet to be evaluated. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of MR damper as a semi-active control device for the vibration mitigation of stay cable. The mathematical model of the MR damper will first be established through a performance test. Then, an efficient semi-active control strategy will be derived, where the damping of MR damper will be tuned according to the dynamic characteristics of stay cable, in order to achieve optimal damping of cable-damper system. Simulation study will be carried out to verify the proposed semi-active control algorithm for suppressing the cable vibrations induced by different loading patterns using optimally tuned MR damper. Finally, the effectiveness of MR damper in mitigating multi modes of cable vibration will be examined theoretically.

  • Cervical cancer remains the most frequent cancer in women from the developing world. More than 88% of deaths occur in low-income countries, and it is predicted to climb to 91.5% by 2030. Although Pap-based screening programmes have shown to be effective in reducing the disease burden in high-resource countries, implementation and sustention of cytology-based programmes is quite challenging in low-resource settings. The present paper reviews evidence-based alternatives of screening methods, triaging algorithm, treatment of cervical precancerous lesions, and age-group at screening appropriate for low-income countries. Evidence shows that visual inspection methods using diluted acid acetic or Lugol's iodine, and HPV-DNA testing are more sensitive tests than the Pap-smear screening test. Visual inspection allows an immediate result and, when appropriate, may be immediately followed by cryotherapy, the so called "screen-and-treat" approach, achieved in a single visit, by trained nurses and midwives. Examples of cervical cancer prevention programmes in India and selected low-income countries are given.

  • The maximum intersection of spherical convex polygons are to find spherical regions owned by the maximum number of the polygons, which is applicable for determining the feasibility in manufacturing problems such mould design and numerical controlled machining. In this paper, an efficient method for partitioning a sphere with the polygons into faces is presented for the maximum intersection. The maximum intersection is determined by examining the ownerships of partitioned faces, which represent how many polygons contain the faces. We take the approach of edge-based partition, in which, rather than the ownerships of faces, those of their edges are manipulated as the sphere is partitioned incrementally by each of the polygons. Finally, gathering the split edges with the maximum number of ownerships as the form of discrete data, we approximately obtain the centroids of all solution faces without constructing their boundaries. Our approach is analyzed to have an efficient time complexity Ο(nv), where n and v, respectively, are the numbers of polygons and all vertices. Futhermore, it is practical from the view of implementation since it can compute numerical values robustly and deal with all degenerate cases.

  • Recently a demand for high precision absolute position transducer is increasing in order to control thickness in steel industry. LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) is widely used to measure the absolute position in the linearly moving cylinder under poor factory environment. In this paper we implement the three phase LVDT with a high resolution of one micron and L/D (LVDT to digital) converter. First we designed U, V, and W three phase signaling using FPGA. Second a pulse output algorithm is designed for position information with A and B phase waveforms. Finally the performance is compared with previous sensors. Experiments show that the linearity deviation error is 0.009788 [mm] and the average sinusoidal THD is 0.0751%, which means 2.2% and 33% more improved result than the previous sensors respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method for implementing the adaptive second-order Volterra filter. To reduce computational load, the UCFD-SVF has been proposed. The UCFD-SVF, however, shows deteriorated convergence performance. We propose a new method that initializes the adaptive filter weights periodically on the fact that the energy of the filter weights is slowly increased. Furthermore, we propose another method that the interval for the weight initialization is variable to guarantee the performance and we shows the method gives the better performance under the non-stationary environment through the computer simulation for the adaptive system identification.

  • Current service discovery protocols such as UPnP, Jini, SLP provide the basic function which is message exchange pattern, service representation and description, in service discovery. They does not guarantee service interoperability among service discovery. Therefore, in this paper, we design and implement CLAM (Component-based Autonomic Layered Middleware) agent platform to enable an efficient service discovery through extension of DF agent function in FIPA-compliant specification. Also, we propose an efficient service discovery mechanism using DHT-Chord algorithm to guarantee scalability and interoperability in DF agent.

  • In this paper, we proposed realtime image enhancing method on the three noise types of input images, such as haze, low contrast and back light images. Some conventional de-hazing algorithms have good performance but need large memories and high computational burdens. We proposed the efficient algorithm which not only removes the haze but also reduces memory usage and computational complexity. We implemented the realtime system by using DM6446 DSP chip, and it showed the excellent result in these three problems; haze, low contrast and back light. We implemented the system with the processing speed at 15 frames/sec.

  • In this paper, the authors propose a multi-transmission mechanism of heterogeneous network environment which is applicable to the SMART screen services over wire and wireless convergence network. This paper presents study results including a SMART screen handover algorithm among multiple collaborative devices under wire and wireless convergence and heterogeneous network environment, and a service operation and management system and a NAS system providing SMART services of AV streaming and contents files. • One of the problems with current youth generations is increasing rate of violence and suicide in their school lives, and this study aims at the design of a sentiment analysis system to prevent suicide by uising big data process. The main issues of the design are economical implementation, easy and fast processing for the users, so, the open source Hadoop system with MapReduce algorithm is used on the HDFS(Hadoop Distributed File System) for the experimentation. This study uses word count method to do the sentiment analysis with informal data on some sns communications concerning a kinds of violent words, in terms of text mining to avoid some expensive and complex statistical analysis methods.
