Objective: The aim of this study was to compare recycled and unused orthodontic miniscrews to determine the feasibility of reuse. The comparisons included both miniscrews with machined surfaces (MS), and those with etched surfaces (ES). Methods: Retrieved MS and ES were further divided into three subgroups according to the assigned recycling procedure: group A, air-water spray; group B, mechanical cleaning; and group C, mechanical and chemical cleaning. Unused screws were used as controls. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, insertion time and maximum insertion torque measurements in artificial bone, and biological responses in the form of periotest values (PTV), bone-implant contact ratio (BIC), and bone volume ratio (BV) were assessed. Results: Morphological changes after recycling mainly occurred at the screw tip, and the cortical bone penetration success rate of recycled screws was lower than that of unused screws. Retrieved ES needed more thorough cleaning than retrieved MS to produce a surface composition similar to that of unused screws. There were no significant differences in PTV or BIC between recycled and unused screws, while the BV of the former was significantly lower than that of the latter (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These results indicate that reuse of recycled orthodontic miniscrews may not be feasible from the biomechanical aspect.
In order to evaluate the effect of platelet-derived growth factor(PDGF-BB) and guided tissue regeneration(GTR) technique on the regeneration of destructed periodontal tissue, intentional through-and-through furcation defects(4mm in height) were made on both mandibular 2nd and 4th premolars of 8 adult male dogs(30-40lb). Experimental group 1 was composed of the premolars that were treated by only topical application of PDGF-BB with 0.05M acetic acid without any barrier membrane. Experimental group 2 was composed of the premolars that were treated by GTR with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane(ePTFE : Gore-tex periodontal material, USA). Experimental group 3 was composed of the premolars that were treated by GTR with ePTFE after topical application of PDGFBE. Control group was composed of the premolars that were treated by coronally positioned flap operation only without use of PDGF-BB and ePTFE membrane. All ePTFE membranes were carefully removed 4 weeks after regenerative surgery, and all experimental animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after regenerative surgery. The light microscopic findings were as follows ; (1) In experimental group 1, rapid new bone formation along the-root surface with multiple ankylosis and root resorption by multinucleated giant cells, and dense connective tissue in the central portion of the furcation defects were observed. (2) In experimental group 2, it was observed that the furcation defects were filled with newly formed bone, Sharpey's fibers were embedded into new cementum on root dentin of furcation fornix area, but the central portion and the area under furcation fornix were still filled with dense connective tissue. (3) In experimental group 3, the furcation defects were regenerated with newly formed dense bone and regular periodontal ligament with Sharpey's fibers embedded into newly formed cementum and bone underneath fornix area. (4) In control group, unoccupied space, apical migration of epithelium, dense infiltration of inflammatory cells in subepithelial connective tissue in relation to heavy plaque accumulation, and root resorption by inflammatory reaction were shown, but any new cementum formation on resorbed dentin surface could not be observed. The present study demonstrated that the combined therapy of PDGF-BB and GTR could enhance the regeneration of destructed periodontal tissue.

Purpose: Measurement of the root surface area (RSA) is important in periodontal treatment and for the evaluation of periodontal disease as a risk factor for systemic disease. The aim of this study was to measure the RSA at 6 mm below the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) using the Mimics software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Methods: We obtained cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data from 33 patients who had visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of Dankook University Dental Hospital. The patients comprised 17 men and 16 women aged from 20 to 35 years, with a mean age of 24.4 years. Only morphologically intact teeth were included in our data. Because the third molars of the maxilla and mandible have a high deformation rate and were absent in some participants, they were not included in our research material. Results: The CBCT data were reconstructed into 3-dimensional (3D) teeth models using the Mimics software, and the RSA at 6 mm below the CEJ was separated and measured using 3-Matic (Materialise). In total, 924 3D teeth models were created, and the area at 6 mm below the CEJ could be isolated in all the models. The area at 6 mm below the CEJ was measured in all teeth from the 33 patients and compared based on sex and position (maxilla vs. mandible). Conclusions: In this study, we demonstrated that it was feasible to generate 3D data and to evaluate RSA values using CBCT and the Mimics software. These results provide deeper insights into the relationship between periodontal inflammatory burden and systemic diseases.

Titanium and its alloys that have a good biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties such as hardness and wear resistance are widely used in dental and orthopedic implant applications. They can directly connect to bone. However, they do not form a chemical bond with bone tissue. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) that combines the high voltage spark and electrochemical oxidation is a novel method to form ceramic coatings on light metals such as titanium and its alloys. This is an excellent reproducibility and economical, because the size and shape control of the nano-structure is relatively easy. Silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and magnesium (Mg) has a useful to bone. Particularly, Si has been found to be essential for normal bone, cartilage growth and development. Manganese influences regulation of bone remodeling because its low content in body is connected with the rise of the concentration of calcium, phosphates and phosphatase out of cells. Insufficience of Mn in human body is probably contributing cause of osteoporosis. Pre-studies have shown that Mg plays very important roles in essential for normal growth and metabolism of skeletal tissue in vertebrates and can be detected as minor constituents in teeth and bone. The objective of this work was to study nucleation and growth of bone-like apatite formation on Ti-6Al-4V in solution containing Mn, Mg, and Si ions after plasma electrolytic oxidation. Anodized alloys was prepared at 270V~300V voltages. And bone-like apatite formation was carried out in SBF solution for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. The morphologies of PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy in containing Mn, Mg, and Si ions were examined by FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of osteogenic genes associated with bone regeneration on anodizing titanium surface. Methods: $20{\times}20{\times}1$ (mm) commercially pure titanium plate was made, one group was pure titanium, second group was punched, and last group was punched and anodized by electrochemical method. Through the osteogenic cell culture model, the expression of extracellular matrix proteins, such as bone morphogenetic protein-2, bone sialoprotein, aggrecan, osteocalcin, Alkaline phosphatase, collagen I had been evaluated by Real-time polymerase chain reaction, and the morphology of growing cells was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Results: The attachment of mesenchymal stem cell was even and well-oriented on all Ti surfaces. The osteogene expression was increased on punching groups but, decreased on anodizing surfaces in 3 week samples. Conclusion: Punched anodizing Ti has possibility be using as a dental implant material, but further in vivo study would be needed.
Purpose : To evaluate the differences in bone height, bone width, and visibility of posterior spiral tomographic images according to various exposure directions, image layer thickness, and inclination of the mandibular inferior border. Materials and Methods: Six partially and completely edentulous dry mandibles were radiographed using Scanora spiral tomography. Spiral tomography was performed at different exposure directions (dentotangential and maxillotangential projection), image layer thicknesses (2 mm, 4 mm and 8 mm), and at various inclinations to the mandibular border (+ 100, 00 and -10°). The bone height and width was measured using selected tomographic images. The visibility of mandibular canal, crestal bone, and buccal and lingual surfaces were graded as 0, 1, or 2. Results : The bone width at the maxillo-tangential projection was wider than at the dento-tangential projection (p < 0.05). The visibility of buccal and lingual surface at the maxillo-tangential projection was higher than at the dento-tangential projection (p<0.05). Thinner image layer thicknesses resulted in greater visibility of buccal and lingual surfaces (p < 0.05). Bone height was greatest in the -10° group, and at the same time the bone width of the same group was the narrowest (p < 0.05). The visibility of alveolar crest and buccal surface of the + 10° group was the highest, while the visibility of the mandibular canal was greatest in the 00 group. Conclusion: When spiral tomography is performed at the mandibular posterior portion for visualization prior to implant surgery, it is important that the inferior border of mandible be positioned as parallel as possible to the floor. A greater improvement of visibility can be achieved by maintaining a thin image layer thickness when performing spiral tomography.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of desensitizing agents applied on hypersensitive root surface following periodontal treatment. This study included 21 subjects(168 vital teeth). To evaluate dentin sensitivity, three clinical tests(tactile, air stream, cold water) were tried and three different densensitizing agents(MS coat, Elmex gel. Superseal) were individually applied. After application, reassessment was done at 1 minute, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. The results were as follows : 1. The degree of dentin sensitivity was measured highly in the sequence of cold water, air stream and tactile and significantly decreased in all four groups with lapse of time(p<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between all four groups in the tactile test with lapse of time. 3. There was no significant difference between three experimental groups in the air stream test with lapse of time. however, one minute later, it was measured highly in the sequence of Superseal, MS coat and Elmex 4. There was no significant difference between three experimental groups in the cold water test with lapse of time. As a result of this study, all of three agents were significantly effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity and these agents could be positively employed to patients complaining of dentin hypersensitivity following periodontal treatment.
This study was performed to estimate the effect of plaque control on the progress of the repair pattern of the alveolar bone surface after bone surgery. In this experiment six mongrel dogs were used, four of them were as experimental group and others were as control. In the case of experimental group, dental floss ligature was tied over the neck of crown for permiting of plaque accumulation during one week before surgery and oral hygiene procedures were not performed. In control group, all the surgical intervention was done as same procedure with experimental except oral hygiene program. After surgery plaque was controlled during one week with using the chlorhexidine brushing. Animals were sacrificed at 1,2,4,6 weeks after osseous surgery. The results were as follows : 1. The alveolar bone defects were covered with regenerated epithelium at one week, matrix change of granulation tissue on subcutaneous area was observed, and new bone formation was initiated from the surface of the bone defects. 2. The connective tissue arrangement revealed more dense, new bone formation by osteoblasts was active at 2 weeks and proliferation of gingival epithelium and alveolar bone tissue were evident at 4 weeks, and almostly recovered to normal condition at 6 weeks. 3. In experimental group, inflammatory reaction was persistent in early stage and bone repair was delayed compared to control group. 4. In control group, matrix change of granulation tissue was initiated from one week, regeneration of gingival epithelium and maturation of subcutaneous conective tissue and new bone formation were evident at 2 weeks, so almost normal bone regeneration was observed at 4,6 weeks.

Controlled Ca impurity implanted inner crack-like pore in the high purity alumina bi-crystal had been created by micro-fabrication technique, which includes ion implantation, photo-lithography, Ar ion milling, and hot press. The morphological change and the growth od crystals formed by heat treatment in Ca doped high purity single crystal alumina, were observed using optical microscopy. The dot was developed and hexagon like crystal appeared on inner surface of crack-like pore after heat treatment. Bar type crystals, probably CaO . $6Al_2O_3$, were observed on the inner surface of 100ppm Ca implanted specimen after 1 hour heat treatment at $1,500^{\circ}C$, but this bar type crystal disappeared after 1 hour heat treatment at $1,600^{\circ}C$. This disappearance means that there should be little increase of Ca solubility limit to alumina and/or changes of diffusion coefficient of Ca in alumina around this temperature.
6 beagle dogs aged over one and half years and weighed 14 to 16 Kg were utilized in this study, Horizontal furcation defects were induced around 2nd, 3rd, and 4th premolars bilaterally, PDGF-BB in conjunction with EGF and PDGF-BB only were applied in the right and left premolars respectively. 2 animals were sacrificed at 4weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks, after regenerative surgery respectively. Semi-thin sections using glass-knife were stained with toluidine blue for light microscopic study. The results were as follows: 1. At 4 weeks after regenerative surgery, bone formation in the PDGF-BB-applied site was thriving, but bone formation in the PDGF-BB-and-EGF-applied site was depressed. 2. Bony ankylosis was surely shown along the whole exposed root surface applied with PDGF-BB, but it was shown at the root surface near the base of the bone defect where was applied with PDGF-BB in conjunction with EGF. 3. Active bone formation was made from 8 weeks after regenerative surgery in the PDGF-BB- and-EGF-applied site. 4. Bone maturity as well as speed of bone formation in the PDGF-BB-applied site was superior to those in the PDGF-BB-and-EGF-applied site throughout the whole experimental period. Within the above results, PDGF-BB had the strong capability to form the new bone and EGF was not able to prevent the bony ankylosis thoroughly. However, EGF may have the possibility to prevent the bony ankylosis through the suppression of bone formation.
