  • The nonlinearity of a laser interferometer usually ranges from sub-nanometer to several manometers. This nonlinearity, which has periodic characteristics, limits the accuracy of the interferometer at the sub-nanometer level. The nonlinearity error of the one-frequency homodyne interferometer with quadrature fringe detection results from a number of factors including polarization mixing by imperfect optical elements, unequal gain of photo detectors, lack of quadrature between two signals and misalignment. In this paper, we described a method for measuring and compensating the nonlinearity of homodyne interferometer using the elliptical fitting technique with least-square method. Experimental results demonstrate that $^\pm$3.5 nm nonlinearity can be reduced to $^\pm$0.2 nm level.

  • Important characteristics of the previously proposed reduced stiffness method and a summery of its design curves for the buckling of the axially loaded sandwich cylindrical shells is presented. Comparison of the lower bound obtained with FEM analysis with that from the reduced stiffness analysis shows that the proposed reduced stiffness method can provide safe lower bounds for the buckling of geometrically imperfect, axially loaded sandwich cylindrical shells. One of the attractive features of the reduced stiffness elastic lower bound analysis is that it provides safe estimates of buckling loads that do not depend on the specification of the precise magnitude of the imperfection spectra. As a result, designers can readily apply this method without being worried about possible geometrical imperfections that might be generated during fabrication and construction of sandwich cylindrical shells.

  • The thermo-mechanical vibration behavior of two dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG) porous nanobeam is reported in this paper. The material properties of the nanobeam are variable along thickness and length of the nanobeam according to the power law function. The nanobeam is modeled within the framework of Timoshenko beam theory. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is used to develop the governing equations. Using the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) the governing equations are solved. The effect of porosity, temperature distribution, nonlocal value, L/h, FG power indexes along thickness and length and are investigated using parametric studies.

  • In ths paper a new active assembly algorithm for chamferless precision parts mating, is considered. The successful assembly task requires an extremely high position accuracy and a good knowledge of mating parts. However, conventional assembly mehtod alone makes it difficult to achieve satisfactory assembly performance because of the complexity and the uncertainties of the process and its environments such as imperfect knowledge of the parts being assembled as well as the limitation of the devices performing the assebled as well as the limitation of the devices performing the assembly. To cope with these problems, a self-learning rule-based assembly algorithm is proposed by intergaring fuzzy set theory and neural network. In this algortihm, fuzzy set theory copes with the complexity and the uncertainties of the assembly process, while neural network enhances the assembly schemen so as to learn fuzzy rules form experience and adapt to changes in environment of uncertainty and imprecision. The performance of the proposed assembly algorithm is evaluated through a series of experiments. The results show that the self-learning fuzzy assembly scheme can be effecitively applied to chamferless precision parts mating.

  • Numerical simulation based on the superposition of ring waves generated by the linear periodic source distributions for the plunger type wave maker was accomplished. The characteristics of directional spreading function were investigated. Mirror images are also introduced to consider reflections of side-wall together with the reflection coefficient to account for the imperfect reflection from the real side wall in the long experimental towing tank. Unexpected spurious waves, resulting from the combined effect of finite breadth of segmented wave maker, wavelength and main wave maker, wavelength and main wave propagating direction, were observed in the line source method and also in the analysis of the directivity. The influence of spurious waves to the directional spreading function was also investigated.

  • Recently, a powdery mildew on the leaves of Capsium spp., Pimento and pepper, occurred greatly in the vinyl-house at Seungchon area, Chonnam province. According to the field survey, the disease is severe at high temperature and high humidity conditions in the vinyl house. Diseased loaves were severely fallen and remained only several top leaves, thus the setting and thickening of fruits were greatly depressed. The pathogenic fungus was identified as Oidiopsis taurica(Lev.) Arn., imperfect stage of Leveillula taurica (Lev.) Arn., The perfect stage of fungus was not observed. Optimum temperatures for conidial germination ranged at $25-30^{\circ}C$ with high humidity.

  • Transceiver optimization in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) cognitive systems is studied in this paper. The joint transceiver beamformer design is introduced to minimize the transmit power at secondary base station (SBS) while simultaneously controlling the interference to primary users (PUs) and satisfying the secondary users (SUs) signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) based on the convex optimization method. Due to the limited cooperation between SBS and PUs, the channel state information (CSI) usually cannot be obtained perfectly at the SBS in cognitive system. In this study, both perfect and imperfect CSI scenarios are considered in the beamformer design, and the proposed method is robust to CSI error. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • It has been previously reported that in principle sludge and blockages can be detected and even characterized by using guided ultrasonic torsional waves, based on an idealized model in which the sludge layer was simplified in terms of geometry and material properties. The work revealed that the presence of a layer inside a pipe scatters the guided wave propagating in the pipe and both the reflection and transmission of the guided wave can be used to effectively detect and characterize the layer. This paper proceeds the work by taking into account more realistic sludge characteristics, including irregular circumferential profiles of the sludge layer and imperfect bonding state between the sludge and the pipe. The influence of these issues is investigated to identify the critical factors that influence the detection and characterization capability of the two measurements.

  • GIS-based spatial data integration tasks have used exhaustive thematic maps generated from sparsely sampled data or satellite-based exhaustive data. Due to a simplification of reality and error in mapping procedures, such spatial data are usually imperfect and of different accuracy. The objective of this study is to carry out a sensitivity analysis in connection with input topographic data for landslide hazard mapping. Two different types of elevation estimates, elevation spot heights and a DEM from ASTER stereo images are considered. The geostatistical framework of kriging is applied for generating more reliable elevation estimates from both sparse elevation spot heights and exhaustive ASTER-based elevation values. The effects of different accuracy arising from different terrain-related maps on the prediction performance of landslide hazard are illustrated from a case study of Boeun, Korea.
