Improved Low-temperature Performance of Lithium Secondary Battery Using Energy Circulating Operation (리튬 이차전지의 저온 성능 개선을 위한 에너지 순환 작동 연구)

  • Lithium-ion secondary batteries exhibit advantageous characteristics such as high voltage, high energy density, and long life, allowing them to be widely used in both military and daily life. However, the lithium-ion secondary battery does have its limitation; for example, the output power and capacity are readily decreased due to the increased internal impedance during discharging at a lower temperature (-32℃, military requirement). Also, during charging at a lower temperature, lithium dendrite growth is accelerated at the anode, thereby decreasing the battery capacity and life as well. This paper describes a study that involves increasing the internal temperature of lithium-ion secondary battery by energy circulation operation in a low-temperature environment. The energy circulation operation allows the lithium-ion secondary battery to alternately charge and discharge, while the internal resistance of lithium-ion battery acts as a heating element to raise its own temperature. Therefore, the energy circulation operation method and device were newly designed based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the lithium-ion secondary battery to mediate the battery performance at a lower temperature. Through the energy circulation operation of lithium ion secondary battery, as a result of the heat generated from internal resistance in an extremely low-temperature environment, the temperature of the lithium-ion secondary battery increased by more than 20℃ within 10 minutes and showed a 75% discharging capacity compared with that at room temperature.

Application Method and EMTP-RV Simulation of Series Resonance Type Fault Current Limiter for Smart Grid based Electrical Power Distribution System (스마트 그리드 배전계통을 위한 직렬 공진형 한류기 적용 방법 및 EMTP-RV 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • In this paper, a method was studied for applying a series resonant type fault current limiter that can be manufactured at low cost to the smart grid distribution system. First, the impact of the harmonic components of the short-circuit fault current injected into the series resonance circuit of the fault current limiter on the peak value of the transient response was analyzed, and a methodology for determining the steady-state response was studied using percent impedance-based fault current computation method. Next, the effectiveness of the method was verified by applying it to a test distribution line. The test distribution system using the designed current limiter was modeled using EMTP_RV, and a three-phase short-circuit fault was simulated. In the fault simulation results, it was confirmed that the steady-state response of the fault current accurately followed the design target value after applying the fault current limiter. In addition, by comparing the fault current waveform before and after applying the fault current limiter, it was confirmed that the fault current was greatly suppressed, confirming the effect of applying the series resonance type current limiter to the distribution system.

A Study on Control of Sealing Robot for Cracks of Concrete Surface (콘크리트 표면 균열 실링을 위한 로봇의 제어 방법에 관한 연구)

  • Since the crack in the surface of the concrete acts as the main reason influencing the life span of the structure, regular inspections and maintenance are required. The sealing required for maintenance of the concrete surface is a method of repairing the crack in the surface in the beginning, and is effective in preventing additional cracks and expansion that occurs with time. However, sealing on large sized structures such as tall buildings or bottom parts of bridges are difficult to ensure safety of the workers due to inadequate working environments. Due to this reason, the importance of the need for sealing automation for the maintenance of large sized concrete structures is emerging. This study proposes two control methods to apply robot systems to the sealing of cracks on the bottom parts of concrete bridges. First is the method of automatically tracking the trajectory of cracks. The robot gets the trajectory of the cracks using video information obtained from cameras. Comparing the previous several points and new point, the next point can be estimated. Thus, the trajectory of the crack can be tracked automatically. The other method is sealing by maintaining steady force to the contacting surface. The concrete surface exposed to an external environment for a long time gets an irregular roughness. If robots are able to carry out sealing while maintaining a steady contact force on these rough surfaces, complete equal sealing can be maintained. In order to maintain this equal force, a force control method using impedance is proposed. This paper introduces two developed control methods to apply to sealing robots, and conducts a Lab Test and Field Test after applying to a robot. Based on the test results, opinions on the possibilities of field application of the robot applied with the control methods are presented.

Efficiency Enhancement of Wireless Power Transfer with Optimum Coupling Mechanism for Mid-range Operation

  • This paper depicts the design, implementation and analysis of efficient resonant based wireless power transfer (WPT) technique using three magnetic coupled coils. This work is suitable for mid ranged device due to small form factor while minimizing the loading effect. A multi turned loop size resonator is exploited for both the transmitter and receiver for longer distance. In this paper, class-E power amplifier (class-E PA) is introduced with an optimum power tracking mechanism of WPT system to enhance the power capability at mid-range with a flat gain. A robust method of finding optimum distance is derived with an experimental analysis of the designed system. In this method, the load sensitive issue of WPT is resolved by tuning coupling coefficient at considerable distances. Our designed PA with a drain efficiency of 77.8% for a maximum output of 5W is used with adopted tuning technique that improves the overall WPT system performance by 3 dB at various operating points.

  • This paper presents an active anti-islanding detection method using negative sequence voltage injection to the grid through a three-phase photovoltaic inverters. Because islanding operation mode can cause a variety of problems, the islanding detection of grid-connected photovoltaic inverter is the mandatory feature. The islanding mode is detected by measuring the magnitude of negative sequence impedance calculated by the negative sequence voltage and current at the point of common coupling. Simulation and experimental test are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method which can detect the islanding mode in the specified time. The test has been done in accordance with the condition on IEEE Std 929-2000.

  • Incorporation of solid electrodes frequently involves plasma-based processing. The effect of plasma can influence the physical characteristics, depending on the magnitude in plasma. The undesired feature of plasma-induced damage should be prevented in characterizing the ultra-thin materials, such as ultra-thin films and organic monolayers. The current work at first proves the applicability of a liquid phase electrode in the electrical/dielectric properties through comparative work using Al and Hg on ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ films deposited through atomic layer deposition at low temperature: Two types of metals such as Aluminum (Al) and mercury (Hg) were used as electrodes in $Al_2O_3$ thin films in order to investigate the effect of electrode preparation on the current-voltage characteristics and impedance features as a function of thickness in $Al_2O_3$ film thickness. The success of Hg in $Al_2O_3$ thin films is applied to the AC and DC characterization of the organic monolayers obtained using the Langmuir-Blodgett method. From the DC current-voltage characteristics, the diode-like response is found to originate from the bulk response of the organic materials, evidenced by the fact and the capacitance is inversely related to the absolute thickness of organic layers.

A Highly Efficient Broadband Class-E Power Amplifier with Nonlinear Shunt Capacitance

  • A new approach to designing a broadband and highly efficient class-E power amplifier based on nonlinear shunt capacitance analysis is proposed. The nonlinear shunt capacitance method accurately extracts optimum class-E power amplifier parameters, including an external shunt capacitance and an output impedance, at different frequencies. The dependence of the former parameter on the frequency is considered to select an optimal value of external shunt capacitor. Then, upon determining the latter parameter, an output matching network is optimized to obtain the highest efficiency across the bandwidth of interest. An analytical approach is presented to design the broadband class-E power amplifier of a MOSFET transistor. The proposed method is experimentally verified by a 140-170 MHz class-E power amplifier design with maximum added power efficiency of 82% and output power of 34 dBm.

  • In this paper, we proposed an fiber-optic transceivers based on the analog optical transmission techniques of incorporating the SCM (subcarrier multiplexing) and WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing ) method, which can be used to transmission of IMT-2000 and PCS wireless frequency band and analyzed overall those parameters related with fabrication. Especially in the impedance matching network between RF signal and LD, we proposed the method of deriving optimal performance using simulation techniques. In the frequency band of 1.7GHz∼2.25GHz, experimental data for the gain flatness and the noise floor of the optical link were also presented $\pm$1.5dB and -130dBm respectively when the link Rain was 0dB.

  • This paper studies the finite element modeling and analytical parameters for the numerical evaluation of dynamic stiffness of large foundation for shipboard equipments such as marine diesel engine. For the purpose, numerical method and procedure to evaluate the dynamic stiffness are established based on the impact test method, which are applied for the dynamic stiffness evaluation of a real diesel generator foundation of ship. Numerical investigations compared with the measured data are carried out to evaluate the effects of modeling ranges of ship substructure, finite element sizes, lower support structures and damping coefficients. From the results, modeling and analytical parameters for proper evaluation of dynamic stiffness of large foundation of shipboard equipment are suggested.

  • This paper proposes a field-oriented control strategy without speed sensor in overall speed range. At low speed region including zero speed, the electrical saliency which is due to the main flux saturation is used in order to estimate an instantaneous flux position. This electrical saliency can be obtained from the difference of high frequency impedance by the high frequency signal injection. This method enables the stable operation at zero speed or stator frequency even under heavily loaded condition. However, because of the high frequency signal injection the loss and noise in motor increase and the voltage margin is reduced as the motor speed increases. Therefore, this algorithm must be supplemented with the algorithm based on the electrical model of motor, which is conventionally used in the region except the low speed. This paper proposes the combination algorithm between the high frequency signal infection method and the adaptive observer, in which the rotor flux and motor speed can be simultaneously estimated by the adaptive control theory. This combination algorithm enables the stable operation of field-oriented speed control without speed sensor in overall speed range. This is verified by experimental results.
