The Nutritional Status of Middle Aged Korean Men Exhibiting Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Their Blood Lipid Profile (내당능장애 가능성이 있는 중년 남성의 신체적 특성, 영양소 섭취상태 및 혈중 지질농도 양상)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate nutritional status of middle aged Korean men exhibiting impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and identify the risk factors related to IGT Data were collected from 163 men with a fasting blood glucose level from 115 to 139mg/dl(high blood glucose group: HBG) and 170 men with a normal fasting blood glucose level(control) aged from 40 to 59 years in both groups. Weight, body mass index(BMI) and percent body fat were significantly higher in high blood glucose(HBG) group than those of control group. Age, weight, BMI, percent body fat were positively related to blood glucose. There were no differences in exercise, smoking and family history of diabetes between two groups. Frequency of fat eating and overeating of HBG were higher than those of control group but frequency of sweet snacks intake of HBG was lower than that of control group. There was no difference in daily total energy intake in two groups. Total and supper energy intakes were positively associated with blood glucose. Percent energy intake of alcohol was significantly higher in HBG group and positively related to blood glucose, however there were no difference in daily intake of nutrients in two groups. Alcohol intake was positively related to BMI, but after adjusting BMI, there was no correlation between alcohol intake and blood glucose. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly higher in HBG group than those of control group. Serum total cholesterol i,nd triglyceride were positively related to blood glucose and high density lipoprotein cholesterol was negatively associated with blood glucose. After adjusting BMI, serum triglyceride was positively related to blood glucose. In conclusion, weight, BMI, percent body fat and blood total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were positively related to blood glucose level of middle aged Korean men exhibiting impaired glucose tolerance. Their eating habits exhibited higher frequency of overeating, fast eating, high energy intakes of supper. (Korean J Nutrition 33(1) : 59-67, 2000)

Relationship between Impaired Fasting Glucose and Periodontal Health among Adults (성인의 공복혈당 수치에 따른 치주건강의 관련성)

  • This aim of this study is to assess the association of between glucose level and periodontal diseases in Korea adults. The data for analysis were obtained from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009. A total of 7,062 subjects who aged 19 years and above, underwent a medical and dental checkups. The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes group was 27%, and the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose(IFG) group was 41.2%, diabetes group was 43.6% with periodontitis. IFG and diabetes had significantly higher prevalence of periodotontits compared to those having normal after adjusting confounding variables; the odds ratios were 1.35 (95% confidence interval: 1.17 to 1.55) and 1.27 (95% confidence interval: 1.02 to 1.58), respectively. This study has suggested that diabetes increases the risk of periodontal disease. Proactive, preventative dental and diabetes self care, as well as regular dental and diabetes assessment, are important management strategies for impaied fasting glucose and periodotnal health.

  • Plasma glucose levels before and after oral glucose administration have been compared in a group of 76 thyrotoxic subjects and a group of 8 normal control subjects in order to study the effect of glucose loading in thyrotoxicosis. Following were the results: 1. The mean fasting plasma glucose level was elevated in the thyrotoxic group(95.5mg%) compared to normal control group (88mg%). 2. The peak of glucose tolerance curve is at 30 minutes after glucose administration in both groups, but its mean value was 44mg% higher in thyrotoxic group than in control group. 3. The plasma glucose levels returned towards the fasting level in the later stage of the test more rapidly in thyrotoxic group than in control group. 4. 69.6% of oral glucose tolerance tests were impaired in the thyrotoxic group, and the occurance of abnormal glucose tolerance could be related to the degree of thyrotoxicity, sex and age. 5. The mechanisms of the impaired glucose tolerance in thyrotoxicosis are thought to be related to an increased rate of glucose absorption from gastrointestinal tract, abnormal liver function with decreased hepatic glycogenesis, increased glucose oxidation, decreased pancreatic release of insulin, and genetic relationship between diabetes and thyrotoxicosis.

Relationship among impaired fasting glucose and diabetes and periodontal disease (공복혈당장애 및 당뇨병과 치주질환의 관련성)

  • This study examined the relationships among impaired fasting glucose (IFG), diabetes and periodontal disease. The data from 10,856 adults (aged over 19 years) was derived from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted in 2010 and 2012. Adjusting the related confounders, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that periodontitis were related to gender, age, education level, smoking and diabetic status (p<0.001). These findings suggest that abnormal fasting glucose, which is a predisposing factor for diabetes mellitus, does not appear to be a risk indicator for periodontal disease. On the other hand, if patients do not take steps to prevent or delay diabetes, prediabetes is likely to develop into type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Therefore, patients with prediabetes need to undergo continuous examinations and management of periodontal disease.

A Study on the Incidence of Diabetes and Its Risk Factors in the Impaired Glucose Tolerence (내당성장애군에서의 당뇨병 발생률과 그 위험요소에 관한 연구)

  • This is to study the incidence of Diabetes and its risk factors in the impaired glucose tolerence group. 1084 subjects who had been examined 3 times for regular check-up in one human dock center under the university hospital were studied between $1986{\sim}1993$. The results are as follows; Prevalence rate of diabetes was 3.56%, and that of impaired glucose tolerence was 30.90% as of initial examination. The rate of diabetes was increasing with the age where 1.2% at age group $30{\sim}39$, 3.21% at age group $40{\sim}49$, 5.84% at age group $50{\sim}59$, 14.28% at age group 60 and over. And also the rate of impaired glucose tolerance was increasing with the age where 21.29% at age group $30{\sim}39$, 31.42% at age group $40{\sim}49$, 38.91% at age group $50{\sim}59$, 33.33% at age group 60 and over Of the examinees who were initially examined, total incidence rate of diabetes who developed to obvious diabetes at the 3rd follow-up examination from the initially impaired glucose tolerence group was 4.63% and it was 11.3 times higher than from the normal group (0.41%). After controlling for the effects of both age and obesity, the risk of subsequent diabetes for subjects with impaired glucose tolerance remained significantly higher than for normal subjects (Relative Risk, 10.48). Test for trends for developing to diabetes by the increasing level of fasting blood sugar and 1hr blood sugar at the initial examination were statistically significant in either normal and impaired glucose tolerence group. To determine the risk factor for developing to diabetes, logistic regression test was applied. Only fasting blood sugar and 1hr blood sugar were predictors for developing diabetes from the impaired glucose tolerence group at initial examination.

Relationship between job stress and impaired fasting glucose in male steel industry workers: a cross-sectional study

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between job stress and impaired fasting glycemia (IFG) of male workers in a manufacturing industry. Methods: Data were collected from 5,886 male workers in a manufacturing industry who participated in the medical examination from June 19 to August 14, 2020 through self-reported questionnaires. The general characteristics of the subjects, shift work, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and job stress were included. Job stress was measured using the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) consisting of 8 items and 43 questions. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the IFG association with job stress. Results: Among the various factors that can cause job stress, only high job demand was associated with a risk of IFG (odds ratio, 1.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-1.82) especially in non-shift worker. For all other factors, no statistically significant results were obtained. Conclusions: In this study of male workers engaged in the Korean steel manufacturing industry, the 'job demand' item among job stress of non-shift worker was related to IFG.

Nutrients and Dish Intake by Fasting Blood Glucose Level (혈당 수준에 따른 영양섭취 및 음식섭취 상태)

  • The nutrient intake and association between dish group intake and blood glucose and serum lipid level (TG, cholesterol, LDL and HDL) was analyzed among 3 groups: 452 subjects in normal blood glucose group (NG: fasting blood glucose < 100 mg/dL and 2 hours postprandial blood glucose < 140 mg/dL), 258 subjects in impaired fasting glucose group (IFG: fasting blood glucose 100~125 mg/dL and 2 hours postprandial blood glucose ${\geq}$ 140 mg/dL) and 101 subjects in diabetic group (DG: fasting blood glucose $\geq$ 126 mg/dL and 2 hours postprandial blood glucose ${\geq}$ 140 mg/dL). The data were obtained from the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Survey of Korea. The 811 subjects were adults aged 40~64 without dietary treatment. In nutrients intake, IFG was the highest and DG the lowest in both quantity and quality. DG, especially, had the lowest intake in carbohydrates, fiber, proteins, Ca, P, K, vitamins B1 and C, and consumed the highest amount of alcohol. In macronutrients distribution ratio, the DG diet showed a lower energy intake from carbohydrates but higher from fat than the NG diet, while IFG showed a higher energy intake from carbohydrates and lower intake from fat in supper out of 3 meals and snacks. IFG preferred salt-fermented foods and DG preferred soups, braised foods and kimchi compared to other groups. NG preferred multi-grain cooked rice and both IFG and DG preferred plain white cooked rice. Regarding the association between dish group intake and blood glucose, cooked rice, soups, salt-fermented foods and kimchi were significantly related to blood glucose. In blood lipids, steamed-foods, beverages and fruits were inversely related to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, whereas cooked rice, stews, saltfer-mented foods, seasoned-fermented foods and seasoned vegetables were directly proportional to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and related diseases. Therefore, it is beneficial to avoid rich, salty and fatty foods and heavy alcohol consumption for controlling blood glucose and blood lipids, while steamed foods, foods rich in fiber (like multigrain rice) as a staple, and fruits and teas are recommended for preventing or managing type 2 diabetes risks.

The association between diabetes mellitus and community periodontal index: The 5th Korean National Health and Nutrition examination survey (당뇨와 지역사회치주지수의 관련성: 제5기 국민건강영양조사)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine the association between diabetes mellitus and community periodontal index in Korean adults. Methods: The study populations were recruited by the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Study subjects were 10,411 who were examined oral examination, blood test, and aged over 19 years. Using multiple logistic regression analyses, the variables were adjusted for gender, age, household income, family history of diabetes, body mess index, smoking habit, and frequency of tooth brushing. Periodontal tissue examination of the subjects was performed and scored by Community periodontal index(CPI). Using probe, six teeth were examined for hemorrhage, plaque, and pocket depth and classified into $CPI_0$, $CPI_1$, $CPI_2$, $CPI_3$ and $CPI_4$. Healthy periodontal groups($CPI_{0-2}$) and periodontal disease groups($CPI_{3-4}$) were divided by the periodontal disease status. The definition of diabetes mellitus(DM) was decided by the diagnosis by the doctors and fasting blood sugar level. Those who were diagnosed as DM were included in DM group. The DM variables included normal blood sugar level, increased fasting blood sugar level, and DM blood sugar level. The DM variables were compared to periodontal disease blood sugar level and analyzed. Results: The periodontitis prevalence rate was 23.2%. Those who had diabetes mellitus accounted for 5.5% of the subjects. Those who had impaired fasting glucose accounted for 17.7% and 7.9% of subjects were diabetes mellitus by blood test. In the confirmed diabetes group by doctor, the periodontitis prevalence rate was significantly higher than the non-diabetic group. Diabetic group by blood test had the highest prevalence rate of periodontitis than those who had impaired fasting glucose group or normal group. After adjusting for gender, age, household income, family history of diabetes, body mass index, smoking habit, and frequency of tooth brushing, the risk of periodontitis in diagnosed diabetes mellitus was 1.57 times(95% CI; 1.27-1.94) higher than the normal group. In impaired fasting glucose group and diabetes mellitus group by blood test, the risk of periodontitis was 1.11 times(95% CI; 0.95-1.30) and 1.45 times(95% CI; 1.45-2.12) higher, respectively. Conclusions: There was a significant relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis in Korean adults. These results suggest that diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for periodontitis.

The Assessment of Blood Glucose Distribution according to the Fasting State and Glycemic Control Indicators for Diabetes Screening (금식 여부에 따른 혈당치 분포와 당뇨병 선별을 위한 혈당조절지표의 평가)

  • This study analyzed the distribution of the blood glucose level according to the fasting status. Moreover, a relationship was analyzed between fasting blood glucose level and glycemic control indicators. A total of 707 outpatients, who visited Dankook University Hospital, were included and classified into either the fasting group and the non-fasting group. The mean blood glucose level of each group was calculated and analyzed by sex, age, and clinic. In addition, blood glucose, HbA1c, fructosamine, and 1,5-AG were measured in 153 fasting health check-up patients, and the correlation between the blood glucose level and glycemic control indicators was evaluated. Blood glucose averages between the two groups (non-fasting 111.9 vs. fasting 103.6 mg/dL) were different (p<0.05); and the mean difference was lower in women (4.8 mg/dL) than in men (12.2 mg/dL). A significant difference of the median glucose values among the age groups was only observed in the non-fasting group (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.01), and not in the fasting group. A 1,5-Anhydroglucitol was estimated to be significantly correlated with the fast blood glucose level in the range of the criteria of impaired fasting glucose (IFG). We presented an assessment of the distribution of blood glucose level in accordance with the fasting status among outpatients, and estimated that 1,5-anhydroglucitol was well correlated with the fasting blood glucose than fructosamine and HbA1c, through the analysis of results of health screening subjects. It is suggested that the use of glycemic indicators that reflect short-term blood glucose control can be used together with the blood glucose measurement in the screening of diabetes mellitus.

Decreased Insulin Secretion in Dogs with Chronic Mitral Valve Insufficiency (만성 이첨판 폐쇄부전증 개에서 인슐린 분비기능 감소)

  • Glucose metabolism abnormalities secondary to heart failure, including insulin resistance (IR) and impaired fasting glucose, have been gradually recognized as important prognostic factors in disease progression. However, to date, no study has investigated glucose abnormalities in dogs with chronic mitral valve insufficiency (CMVD). Thus, we hypothesized that glucose metabolism abnormalities due to heart failure may develop in dogs with CMVD. A prospective study was performed on 113 client-owned dogs with variable CMVD severities. Serum insulin, glucagon, fructosamine, and glucose concentrations were measured, and insulin resistance was determined using the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) score. The serum insulin concentration had a significant inverse association with the heart failure severity. However, there was no significant association between the heart failure severity and fructosamine, HOMA score, and fasting blood glucose. Insulin, fructosamine, and HOMA had a significant positive association with body condition scores (BCS), whereas glucose had no association. This study found that insulin secretion in dogs with naturally occurring heart failure due to CMVD might be compromised as the disease worsens.
