  • As for the safety evaluation of existing large-scale structures, methods for estimation of the structural and dynamic properties are studied. Sequential prediction error method in time domain and improved FRF estimator in frequency domain are comparatively studied. For this purpose, impact tests of 2 bay 3 floor steel frame structure are performed. Results from both methods are found to be consistent to each others, however those from the finite-element analysis are slightly different from experimental results.

  • Excellent environmental durability and handy installation procedure as well as high specific strength and stiffness have introduced fiber-reinforced polymeric composite materials into the civil and architectural engineering field. This study presents the considerably enhanced strength characteristics of the mortal beams by being reinforced with epoxy-bonded carbon fiber sheets(CFS). Three point bending and Charpy impact tests were performed on both of bare and reinforced mortar specimens. The influences of length, and the number of reinforcing plies were investigated. Strength reduction due to pre-existent notch was lessened dramatically. The acoustic emission(AE) measurement revealed the progressive damage process in reinforced specimens.

  • This paper presents investigation of damping characteristics of squeeze mode type MR mount experimently. The MR mount proposed in the study has variable damping characteristics according to the applied magnetic field strength. Impact and force excitation tests were performed. The dynamic property of the mount using MR fluid was compared with that of the mount using conventional oil. (omitted)

  • Recently developed austempered ductile irons(A.D.I.) have good mechanical properties. However it is still needed to examine the relationships between microstructures related to banitic reaction and the mechanical properties. From the mechanical tests such as impact test, hardness test, tensile test, and the microstructure observations, we concluded that the good mechanical properties of A.D.I. came from the fine banitic ferrite structure formed during the first stage of the austempering reaction.

  • The setting problem of protective devices in power distribution systems is a combinatorial search problem involving a lot of trial & errors to search for a proper solution which has a great impact for the system reliability. This paper discusses the nature of the problem and proposes a scheme to prune the decision tree achieving the efficient search for a setting solution by applying heuristic rules which utilize pattern informations of backup and primary devices. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through many tests on real systems.

  • This paper presents high-velocity impact analysis of two-way RC slabs, including steel fibers and strengthening with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets for evaluating impact resistance. The analysis uses the LS-DYNA program, which is advanced in impact analysis. The present analysis was performed similarly to the high-velocity impact tests conducted by VTT, the technical research center of Finland, to verify the analysis results. High-velocity impact loads were applied to $2100{\times}2100{\times}250$ mm size two-way RC slab specimens, using a non-deformable steel projectile of 47.5kg mass and 134.9m/s velocity. In this research, extra impact analysis of material specimens was carried out to verify the material models used to the analysis. The elastic-plastic hydrodynamic model, concrete damage model and orthotropic elastic model were used to simulate the non-linear softening behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), and material properties of normal concrete and FRP sheets, respectively. It is concluded that the suggested analysis technique has good reliability, and can be effectively applied in evaluating the effectiveness of reinforcing/retrofitting materials and techniques. Also, the Steel fiber and FRP sheet strengthening systems provided outstanding performance under high-velocity impact loads.

  • The analysis and experimental program of reinforced concrete (RC) structures for resistance against such extreme loads as earthquake, blast, and impact have been carried by many researchers and designers. Under the extreme loads, a large amount of energy is suddenly exerted to the structure, hence if the structure fails to absorb the impact energy, catastrophic collapse may occur. To prevent catastrophic collapse of structures, reinforced concrete must have adeguate toughness or it needs to be strengthened. The FRP strengthening method and SFRC are studied widely in resistance of impact load because of their high energy absorption capacity. In this study, drop weight impact tests were implemented to evaluate the impact resistance of SFRC and FRP strengthened RC beam while the total steel fiber volume fractions was fixed at 0.75% carbon FRP flexural strengthened RC beams. Futhermore, to prevent the shear-plug cracks when the impact load strikes the beams, additional FRP shear strengthening method are applied. The experimental, results showed that the FRP strengthened RC SFRC beams has high resistance of shear-plug cracks and crack width and SFRC has high resistance of concrete spalling failure compared to normal RC beams. The FRP flexural and shear strengthening RC beams has weakness in the spalling failure because the impact load concentrated the concrete face which is not strengthened with FRP sheets.

  • In this study, we performed whole effluent toxicity(WET) test and compared the biological component analyses tests for some streams into which wastewater treatment plant effluents are discharged. The test procedures for the WET test and the biological component analysis were conducted according to U.S. EPA guidelines and the Ohio EPA wading method. The WET tests based on the test species of D. manga and S. capricornutum All treatment plants showed a S. capricornutum toxicity, and at 7 sites, except A and J, we could observe a D. magna toxicity. The highest toxicity was observed at site D and this were followed by E and F. The biological component analyses applied to the effluent discharged stream. We found that total species were low at sites C1, D1 and J1 and the low number of total individuals were observed at sites A1, C1, E1, H1, and J1 compared to the controls and other sites. The species richness was low at sites A1, B1, C1, D1, and J1. The species change was evident at site D(D1) and the tolerant species was predominant. The biological analyses and WET tests suggested that the effluents resulted in massive ecosystem impact.
