  • With the advent of distributed generation, power systems in general are impacted in regards to stability and power quality. Distributed generation has positive impacts on system restoration following a fault, higher reliability, and mitigation of effect due to voltage sag. However, distributed generation also has negative impacts on the decrease of reliability such as changes of protective device setting and mal-operation. Because bulk power systems consist of various sources and loads, it is complicated to analyze power systems that have distributed generation. The types of distributed generation usually are classified as the rotating machinery system and the inverter-based system. In this paper, distributed generation is designed as a synchronous generator, and the distribution system with its distributed generation model is simulated using EMTP. In addition, this paper shows the simulation results according to the types of distributed generation

  • In this paper a complicated structural behavior in collision and its effect of energy transmission to the collision bulkhead was examined through a methodology of the numerical simulation to obtain a ideal bow construction and a location of collision bulkhead against heat on collision. At present the bow structure is normally designed in consideration of its specific structural arrangement and internal and external loads in these areas such as hydrostatic and dynamic pressure wave impact and bottom slamming in accordance with the Classification rules and the specific location of collision bulkhead by SOLAS requirement. By these studies the behavior of the bow collapse due to collision was synthetically evaluated for the different size of tankers and its operational speed limits and by the results of these simulation it provides the optimal design concept for the bow construction to prevent the subsequent plastic deformation onto or near to the collision bulkhead boundary and to determine the rational location of collision bulkhead.

  • This paper describes the test results of plant minimum stable load (Pmin) for Ilijan Power Plant. The test was conducted on May 13 through 14, 2015 to investigate the plant operating and equipment condition in accordance with "Ilijan Plant Performance Test Procedure on Plant Minimum Stable Load" [1]. This paper also contains the assessment of the impact of Pmin to plant operating parameters and possible technical operating issues when operating at lower loads and to recommend the safe minimum load operation of Ilijan per block. In addition, this paper describes the performance calculation results of efficiency and heat rate depending on the load level.

  • A landing gear absorbs the impact energy during the touchdown and it generally consists of an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber and structural components. It should be designed not only to satisfy the static and fatigue strength requirements but to have the sufficient shock absorbing efficiency. The design loads and shock absorbing performance are to be validated by tests, which is required by MIL Spec and FAR, etc. This paper presents the development procedures from the design requirements to the qualification tests and technical points to be considered, with examples of the helicopter landing gear development.

  • As increase of nonlinear loads and renewable energy generators (REGs) being connected to power distribution system via inverters, the concern on harmonic problems have increased. Recently, the harmonics evaluation method considering TDD (Total Demand Distortion) is used to analyze the effect of harmonics from inverters on power distribution quality. Harmonic current sources are typically used for simulation of nonlinear load. Most inverter type for REGs is voltage source inverter (VSI). So, harmonic voltage sources are more suitable to analyze impact of renewable energy generator on harmonics problem in power distribution system. In this paper, we presented the circuit model to analyze interaction between harmonics from nonlinear load and REGs. We verified that the harmonic analysis using the proposed circuit model is more appropriate than the harmonics evaluation method considering TDD through case study using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • The transient analysis of delaminated smart composite laminates is studied using an improved layerwise laminate theory. The theory is capable of capturing interlaminar shear stresses that are critical to delamination. The presence of discrete delamination is modeled through the use of Heaviside unit step functions. Stress free boundary conditions are enforced at all fee surfaces. Continuity in displacement field and transverse shear stresses are enforced at each ply level. In modeling piezoelectric composite plates, a coupled piezoelectric-mechanical formulation is used in the development of the constitutive equations. Numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of nonlinearity in the transient vibration of bimodular behavior caused by the contact impact of delaminated interfaces. Composite plates with delamination, subject to external loads and voltage history from surface bonded sensors, are investigated and the results are compared with corresponding experimental results and plates without delamination.

  • The purpose of this study is to review and validate the seismic analysis procedures of turbine-generator foundation specified in the Korea Building Code which adopts equivalent static analysis. Typical machines and foundations were chosen and various kinds of parametric studies were peformed and the results were compared with the detail dynamic analysis. The general trend of the study results showed that the most of the computed responses of equivalent static analysis are smaller than those of the dynamic analyses(response spectrum analysis and time history analysis), which implies the existing seismic analysis technique using the existing Building Code may give unconservative design results. The results also showed that the seismic loads are one of the governing design parameters of the turbine-generator foundations.

  • Tower cranes are essential equipments that play a key role in the overall process of large-scale construction projects, as well as high-rise apartments construction projects. Tower cranes hoist various loads near and over people, working in crowded environments, sometimes in overlapping work areas, and often under the constraints of time, budget, and labor. This work system further increases the safety risks of sites with inherently hazardous workplaces. The methodology of this research was based on a comprehensive inquiry of a team of experts, including safety managers and equipment managers of major construction companies and previous literature search. Due to the limited resources available to improve safety and prevent accidents, more attention should be paid to all parties involved in factors that have been evaluated to have a significant impact on site safety due to tower crane operations.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the design sensitivity of an independent driving system for disaster response. The research procedure was as follows. First, an analysis model based on the circuit diagram of the driving system was developed. Second, to ensure the reliability of the analytical model, the load-free test results and analysis results were compared. Even if different loads acted on four independent motors, the system was confirmed to be implemented according to the design intent. Finally, the design variables of the analysis model were analyzed to obtain design variables with a significant impact on system performance and stability. The analysis program used simulation X.
