  • A simple preliminary analysis is often useful to check a validity of design alternatives before the detailed analysis phase in the viewpoint of efficiency. This paper describes a preliminary analysis procedure for the selection among basket design candidates for the spent fuel shipping cask of Korean standard nuclear power plant. As the cask should maintain the structural integrity in hypothetical accident condition, the case of 9 m drop is significantly considered as the worst scenario among the accident conditions in structural design viewpoint in this paper. As basket design options, totally four different types are considered and analyzed in the point of structural integrity at drop impact and weldability for fabrication. As a result, an insertion round plate type with densely spaced supports turns out to be the best in both of the viewpoints, though the weld plate type shows a bit more design margin.

  • The Objective of this work was to design Composite Antenna Structures (CAS) and investigate impact behavior of CAS which was various curvature. This term, CAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constants and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, microstrip antenna layers inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at the resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was. After making five kinds of curved CAS, which radii of curvature are flat, 200, 150, 100, 50 mm. The antenna performance changed in accordance with variation of curvature. The Reflection coefficient was independent of curvature but the gain decreased with the radius of curvature. The impact test equipment was Dyna-8250 drop weight tester. The impact characteristic in accordance with curvature is maximum absorb energy is same each other. The impact energy was 8.5 J. For various Impact energy test, five energy levels 3 J, 5 J, 7 J, 10 J, 20 J were used. The performance of impact damaged antenna was estimated by measuring the return loss and the radiation pattern. It was revealed that the performance of antenna was not related to the impact damage. Because the impactor did not damage the patch directly. CAS have good impact stability for the antenna performance.

  • Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) was first formally established in the Korea in 1981. Subsequently there has been a rapid growth in EIA activity, and over one hundred fifty environmental impact statements are now published in Korea each year. Although EIA now has almost 20 years of history in the Korea, elsewhere the development of roles and practice is more recent. Development is moving apace in many countries, including the Japan and the EU Member States. Such progress has not been without its problems, and a number of the current issues in EIA-scope of the assessment, the relative roles, the quality of assessment and monitoring and auditing after decision, and so on- are highlighted. So the purpose of this article is to reform the EIA roles and process, in extending the scope of activity, and assessing effectiveness. This article suggested improving the effectiveness of project assessment, widening the scope: stretegic environmental assessment, and extending EIA to project design process, environmental monitoring and feedback system.

  • This study addresses the issue of safety of the splash guard of a computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool at the design stage. As an impact test for evaluating safety requirements such as strength under the safety regulation is an expensive and iterative task, it is necessary to develop a new method to minimize the task of the impact test for development of the machine tool. In this study, explicit finite element method was adopted for replacement of the impact test of the splash guard of a machine tool at the design stage. A finite element model was developed for implementing the impact test on an actual vertical CNC lathe and then produced the analysis including plastic strain and deformation to enable the safety of its splash guard to be determined. The analysis results demonstrated that the finite element method can be applied to safety evaluation for design of the splash guard of a CNC machine tool.

  • Heavy-weight head slides may cause excessive inertia impact & moment on the machine tool structure when they move or stop abruptly during operation. Consequently these inertia impact and unbalanced moment bring transient vibrations and rough sliding motions on the machine structure. Machine tool engineers have tried many kind of feed-slide designs in order to solve this problem; for example, the design optimization of the moving structure for minimum weight and maximum stiffness, box-in-box type slide design, and so on. In this article, force and moment equilibrium equations regarding to the inertia force & moment were derived for each one of a mold M/C's head slides. Furthermore, five different design configurations of head slide assembly were reviewed for its design improvement regarding to force & moment calculations and finite element structural analysis results.

  • It should be essentially considered as important points that design of case in electronic product which simultaneously satisfied with structural stability and molding form in respect to developmental period and economical aspect. Especially, a shape of air vents grille, which is made to emit heat happen to be in the internal of product, must satisfy durability and strength but We have no quantitative data because to be done by experience of designer. So, in this study, We will propose that structure of optimal and method of design in air vents grille, which to reduce a lot of loss of time and cost due to trial and error of design and to stabilize in the BALLISTIC Impact test as to estimate strength with external appearance of product, using linear analysis.

  • In this study, 4 indices of hydraulic & hydrological, geomorphological, eco & environmental, social effect and 38 items are selected to calculate impact range of downstream of dam. The Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) was applied to determine the priority of impact range calculation indices and items. As results of indices valuation, hydraulic & hydrological effect is the first priority, the second is eco & environmental, next are geomorphological and social effect. As results of items valuation, the design flood of dam is the first priority, the second is the natural flood & design flood of channel, next are the design flood rate of channel, drainage area and back water level caused by downstream of dam. In the case of Daechung dam, impact ranges were estimated 47.21 km in terms of the design flood of dam, 45.71 km of the design flood rate of channel, 13.94 km of the drainage area.

  • Dynamic behaviour of a package of a microwave oven under the drop-impact conditions is evaluated by the finite element analysis and tests. PAM-CRASH software is used for the finite element analysis and the tests are performed according to the ISTA(International Safe Transit Association) specification. Results of the analyses are compared with those of the tests and accuracy is shown to be favourable. Under the drop-impact condition of the original design, severe deformation occurs and an improved design is proposed to reduce it. The approach presented in this research can be successfully applied to reduce costs and time required to develop new models of the microwave oven.

  • Offshore structures are exposed to higher probability of collision with ship because of their limited mobility. In general, the consequence of the collision is reported to be relatively small and it is desirable to consider minor collisions in the design stage. It is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic responses of a tubular, their main member, under collision to design offshore structure against possible accidents. It is needed to estimate the probable extent of damage of a tubular, depth of dent, affected by the time history of impact load in ender to design a tubular strong enough for collision. In this paper, dynamic behaviors of a tubular due to the lateral impact are investigated through the numerical simulations with hydrocode DYNA3D, a three dimensional elasto-plastic large deformation impact contact problem analyzing program.
