Rheology and morphology of concentrated immiscible polymer blends

  • The phase morphology is an important factor in the rheology of immiscible polymer blends. Through its size and shape, the interface between the two phases determines how the components and the interface itself will contribute to the global stresses. Rheological measurements have been used successfully in the past to probe the morphological changes in model blends, particularly for dilute systems. For more concentrated blends only a limited amount of systematic rheological data is available. Here, viscosities and first normal stress differences are presented for a system with nearly Newtonian components, the whole concentration range is covered. The constituent polymers are PDMS and PIB, their viscosity ratio can be changed by varying the temperature. The data reported here have been obtained at 287 K where the viscosities of the two components are identical. By means of relaxation experiments the measured stresses are decomposed into component and interfacial contributions. The concentration dependence is quite different for the two types of contribution. Except for the component contributions to the shear stresses there is no clear indication of the phase inversion. Plotting either the interfacial shear or normal stresses as a function of composition produces in some cases two maxima. The relaxation times of these stresses display a similar concentration dependence. Although the components have the same viscosity, the stress-component curves are not symmetrical with respect to the 50/50 blend. A slight elasticity of one of the components seems to be the cause of this effect. The data for the more concentrated blends at higher shear rates are associated with a fibrillar morphology.

정상 흐름 영역에서 비상용성 고분자 블렌드계의 분산상의 Coalescence 거동에 관한 연구 (Coalescence of Dispersed Phase for Immiscible Polymer Blends in Quiescent Flow Field)

  • 비상용성 LDPE/PS 블렌드계 (86.5/l3.5 vol%)를 내부 혼합기를 사용하여 만들었고 레오미터 (rheometer)와 scanning electron microscope (SEM)으로 분산상인 droplet들의 변형과 합체 (coalescence)거동에 대하여 살펴보았다. 혼합 초기에 일정한 크기의 droplet들이 서로 뭉쳐졌고 큰 변형 하에서 실모양 (thread-like)을 나타냈다. 본 실험에 사용한 LDPE/PS 블렌드계의 critical capillary number를 De Bruijn의 실험식으로 계산한 결과 0.96이었고 local capillary number는 3.867이었다. 또한 블렌드 시편을 $200^{\circ}C$에서 다양한 시간으로 서냉한 후 서냉 시간에 따른 형태의 변화를 관찰하였다. $200^{\circ}C$에서 ${\gamma}$=1789일 때 최대 크기의 droplet이 관찰되었고 특히 서냉 시간이 15분일 때 형태의 파괴 (break-up)가 일어났다. Droplet의 합체에 결정적인 영향을 미치는 것은 기질의 점도이다.

  • Polycaprolactone (PCL)을 base로 하는 효과적인 compost 필름을 만들기 위하여 옥수수전분을 블렌딩한 뒤 기계적 특성과 미생물에 의한 생분해도를 조사하였다. 비상용성을 보이는 옥수수전분/PCL 블렌드에 대한 상용화제로는 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)-PCL macromer를 옥수수전분에 그래프팅시킨 공중합체를 사용하였는데 옥수수전분에 대한 HEMA의 그래프팅율이 가장 높은 것과 가장 낮은 것을 선택하여 일정한 조성의 $\varepsilon$-caprolactone에 그래프팅시킨 상용화제들의 상용화 효과를 비교하였다. 상용화제를 함유한 옥수수전분/PCL (50/50) 블렌드의 신장율이 상당히 증가하였으며 SEM 관찰 결과 이는 상용화제로 인해 옥수수전분 알갱이와 PCL 기질간의 계면 접착력이 증가하였기 때문으로 판단된다. 그러나 모듈러스와 인장강도는 상용화치 사용에도 불구하고 별다른 변화가 없었다.

Evaluation of interfacial tension for poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene by rheological measurements and interaction parameter of the two polymers

  • Morphological and rheological properties of the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) blends were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES). From the SEM results, the PMMA-PS blends showed dispersed morphology and the particle size of the dispersed phase was quite small (0.1~0.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ compared with other immiscible polymer blends. Values of the interfacial tension of the PMMA-PS blend were obtained from the Choi-Schowalter and the Palierne emulsion models using the storage modulus of the PMMA and PS, and found to be 1.0 and 2.0 mN/m, respectively. The interfacial tension between the PMMA and PS was also calculated from the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter ($\chi$) and found to be from 0.98 to 1.86 mN/m depending on the molecular weight and composition. Comparing the values of the interfacial tension from the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter and the values measured by oscillatory rheometer, it is suggested that the interfacial tension of the PMMA-PS blend obtained from the polymer-polymer interaction parameter are in good agreement with the values obtained by rheological measurements.

  • 2몰% 에틸가지를 포함하는 에틸 가지화 폴리에틸렌[(PE(2)]과 에틸렌-프로필렌 몰비가 50:50으로 같지만 입체규칙성이 서로 다른 랜덤-에틸렌-프로필렌 고무(r-EPR), 교호-에틸렌-프로필렌 고무(alt-EPR) 및 이소탁틱-교호-에틸렌-프로필렌 고무(iso-alt-EPR)를 에틸렌-프로필렌 고무의 입체규칙성에 대한 혼화성과 물성의 차이를 조사하기 위하여 혼합하였다. 이 세가지 블렌드들은 상온에서 상호간에 혼화성이 없었고, 밀도 측정에서 단순한 첨가 효과를 보여 주었다. 블렌드 조성에 따른 폴리에틸렌의 녹는점 감소는 PE(2)/r-EPR>PE(2)/alt-EPR>PE(2)/iso-alt-EPR의 순서로 증가하였다. 인장시험에서 이 블렌드계는 혼합 조성이 50:50 일때 가장 낯은 파난강도의 값을 보여 주어 이 블렌드 조성에서 두 고분자 상(phase)이 가장 분리된 형태학(morphology)을 가지고 있음을 알았다.

Migration of Nanoclay in Immiscible Polymer Blends

  • Five sandwiched multilayers consisting of PBT(Polybutyleneterephthalate), PS(Polystyrene) and clay were prepared to investigate the migration mechanism of clay in the polymer blend system. Rheometry (RMS800) was used to apply well-defined shear on the above multilayer samples in order to well understand dominant factors controlling the migration. Applied shear force was enough to move clay tactoids to the interface, if either long time or high shear was available, but it was not sufficient to separate into individual platelets of clay. The morphology evolution was subsequently studied in term of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), respectively.

  • Several types of dynamic atomic force microscopy such as tapping-mode, force modulation-mode are commonly cooperated by phase-contrast imaging techniques, which were interpreted as elastic contrast by mistake in the past and are nowadays regarded as the representation of energy dissipative processes. However, as theoretically reported, the situation is not so simple when the strong adhesive interaction is involved. Furthermore, elastic and viscous contributions are not easily divided in the case of polymeric systems. Thus, the interpretation of image contrast for them must be very carefully treated. In this study, we will demonstrate how such contrast mechanisms are complicated, using several miscible and immiscible polymer blend systems as model samples.

  • Miscibility of polysulfone (PSf) with various hydrophilic copolymers was explored. Among these blends, PSf gives homogeneous mixtures with poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-styrene) copolymers [P(VP-S)] when these copolymers contained VP from 68 to 88 wt%. Microporous membranes for the ultrafiltration process were prepared from PSf blends with P(VP-S) copolymers. The membranes prepared from the PSf/(VP-S) blends exhibited higher water flux than the membranes prepared from PSf irrespective of the VP content. The solute rejection examined with the membranes fabricated from the miscible blends was similar to that of PSf membrane. However, the solute rejection examined with the membranes fabricated from the immiscible blends was lower than that of PSf membranes.

  • Blends of poly(l-lactide) (PLA) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) were prepared by melt mixing in order to improve the brittleness of PLA. A reactive compatibilizer with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), PE-GMA, was required as a compatibilizer due to the immiscibility between PLA and LDPE. It contributes to reduce the domain size of dispersed phase and enhance the tensile properties of PLA/LDPE blends, especially for PLA matrix blends. A reaction product between PLA and PE-GMA, which was formed during melt-mixing and considered to act as a reactive compatibilizer, was characterized using $ ^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy.

PS/PP와 EPDM/PP 블렌드의 유변학적 거동에 미치는 계면의 영향 (Effects of Interface on the Rheological Behaviors of PS/PP and EPDM/PP Polymer Blends)

  • 비상용성 고분자 브렌드계인 PS/PP와 EPDM/PP의 유변학적 거동에 미치는 계면의 영향을 알아보았고 그실험 결과를 Park & Lee 모델과 비교하였다. PS/PP와 EPDM/PP 블 렌드계에서의 계면에 의한 전단응력과 법선 응력차에의 기여도는 $textsc{k}$와λ(1-$\mu$), 두 개의 변 수에 의해 잘설명되었다. 특히 계면의 탄성적인 효과와 관련있는 법선응력차 항이 전단 응 력 항보다 더 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 30PS/70PP 블렌드 조성에서는 블렌드의 유변학적 특성이 주로 연속상을 이루는 고분자의 의해 좌우된 반면에 50PS/50PP 블렌드조성에서는 계면에 의한 영향이 더두드러지게 나타났다. 이것은 50/50 블렌드 조성에서 계면의 넓이가 증가한 것과 관계 있다. 그러나 EPDM/PP 블렌드계에서 계면에 의한 응력 항들이 모두 PS/PP 블 렌드계의 그것보다 매우 큰 값을 가졌지만, 그 상대적인 비를 나타내는 $textsc{k}$값은 작았다. 이것 은 블렌드를 구성하고 있는 순수한 성분의 법선응력차 값의 차이가 크기 때문이다. 또한 PS/PP 블렌드계에 대한 동적 계면장력을 Park & Lee 모델을 이용하여 예측해 보았다.
