  • Korea is rapidly becoming a multicultural society in recent years, and the number of multicultural families in 2015 exceeds 3.5% and 800,000. Also, as international marriage rate exceeds 10% by 2016, the number of multicultural families is expected to steadily increase. This study is a design of a metadata application profile as part of the foundation for providing learning resources and content tailored to the needs and preferences of married immigrant women and multicultural family members who need to adapt to Korean society. In order to verify the necessity of the research, we conducted an in-depth interview by screening consumer groups, and analyzed the relevant international and Korean national standards as de-jure standards for the design of metadata standard profiles. Then, we analyzed the contents characteristics for multicultural members, and organized the necessary metadata elements into profiles. We defined the mandatory/optional conditions to reflect the needs of content providers. This study is meaningful in that the study analyzes the educational needs of married immigrant women and presents the necessary metadata standards to develop and service effective educational content, such as korean-to-korean conversion system, personalized learning contents recommendation service, and learning management system.

  • Backgrounds/Aims: The objective of our study was to determine the epidemiological, laboratory, and serological characteristics of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and normal transaminases. The study also aimed to evaluate liver damage by measuring the liver fibrosis (LF) grade and to identify possible factors associated with the presence of fibrosis. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in patients with chronic HBV infection and classified as inactive carriers or immune-tolerant. Epidemiological variables of age, sex, immigrant, alcohol consumption, and body mass index (BMI), as well as virological variables (HBV DNA) and transaminase level were collected throughout the follow-up. The LF grade was evaluated by transient elastography. The cutoff value for significant fibrosis (SF) was liver stiffness ${\geq}7.9kPa$. Results: A total of 214 patients were included in the analysis, and 62% of them had a BMI ${\geq}25kg/m^2$. During follow-up, 4% of patients showed transaminase elevation (<1.5 times normal). Most patients had a viral DNA level <2,000 IU/mL (83%). Data on LF were available in 160 patients; of these, 14% had SF, 9% F3, and 6% F4. The variables associated with the presence of SF were transaminase alteration during follow-up, as 23% of patients with SF had elevated transaminases versus 3% of patients without SF (P<0.005), and BMI, as the vast majority of patients with SF (88%) had a BMI ${\geq}25kg/m^2$ versus 56% of patients without SF (P<0.05). Conclusions: In patients with chronic HBV infection and normal transaminases, liver damage does not seem to be related to DNA levels, alcohol consumption, or immigrant status. SF seems to be associated with transaminase alteration during follow-up and elevated BMI. It is therefore recommended to measure LF grade with validated non-invasive methods in such patients.

  • This research examines mutual culture education in accordance with Germany's immigrant social integration policy by analyzing the National European School in Berlin. In this regard, the curricula of Joan-Miró elementary school and Finow elementary school are analyzed. Germany maintains a multicultural policy which enables immigrants to maintain their native language and identity and simultaneously integrate them into the German society. In short, maintenance of immigrants' mother tongue and immigrant students' acquisition of the German language is the core of Germany's social integration policy. The National European School in Berlin is a public school established for the sake of an educational environment in which students can not only build up language capacity, but also create a culturally mutual environment for multicultural students. The school's educational objective is mutual culture education which can integrate and maintain the cultural identity and language of multicultural students. Joan-Miró elementary school encourages mutual cultural ability and bilingual ability while preparing students for the future intelligent society, leading their independent life and self-initiated learning. Finow elementary school encourages mutual culture ability, language capacity and directional capability apart from the basic capacities that can reinforce students to become citizens in demand of the future intellectual society. Korean foreign language education needs to be practically diversified as in the case of the Germany's National European school. Also, improvement of educational environment such as students' bilingual ability, students' ability development regarding their individual characteristics, and the capability of mutual culture understanding are issues that should be urgently treated.

  • Objectives: This study aims to identify health status and health risks among female marriage immigrants to Korea and to provide a basis for public health strategies to address their health issues. Methods: The participants of the study were 3,069 immigrant wives. The health examination was conducted by the Korea Association of Health Promotion (KAHP) in 2008. The participants also completed self-administered questionnaires on demographic characteristics, health-related behaviors and mental health. Results: Patterns of immigrant women's health problems differed by age and country of origin. Behavior patterns also differed by their heritage, age, and years of residence in Korea. Generally Vietnamese women fell in lower ranges of disease prevalence and health risk factors in the participant group and Japanese women presented most healthy eating habits. Filipina women showed relatively high disease prevalence than any other group. Conclusion: Immigration to Korea by marriage is relatively a new phenomenon, thus continuing surveillance and research are needed to identify health risks, behavior patterns, and their relationships. Interventions and policies for the health of migrant wives, their children and families are required.

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate and explain the influence of personal characteristics on female immigrants' perception and attitude towards the Korean food culture. Methods: Exploratory research was performed by conducting a self-administered survey. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit 289 participants to determine their level of information awareness, perception and familiarity with Korean food culture. Results: Female immigrants' mean FNS score was 3.70. FNS score decreased in women from Northeast Asia, women who received higher education, and in urban women. The level of information awareness of Korean Food culture was 3.47, which was above average. Women from Southeast Asia had a higher level of awareness about cooking methods and table setting. Females living in the countryside and those who had lived for more than 7 years in Korea had higher levels of information awareness than other groups. Women from Southeast Asia perceived that Korean food is spicy; on the other hand, women from Northeast Asia discerned that Korean food is pungent and is prepared scientifically. The neophilic group more positively recognized Korean foods based on taste and nutritional value than did the neophobic group. Subjects living in the countryside were more likely to evaluate nutritional value, scientific aspects and artistry higher. The research also found that the neophilic group and immigrants who had lived for more than 7 years in Korea were significantly correlated with the familiarity with Korean food culture. Conclusion: The findings provide an initial step towards developing a customized education program for female marriage immigrants to adapt and to become familiar with Korean food culture with a comprehensive understanding of personal traits for accepting a new food culture.

  • The diversity of urban landscapes is established by dynamic characteristics such as language, color, and their movement, which are the building environment, street patterns, and people. With the increase of foreign migrants in Korea, new guidelines are needed in terms of local community administration and land policy. Administrative, sociological, and geographical studies have been conducted on the steadily increasing number of foreign migrants since the 2000s, but it is difficult to establish for making safe and healthy communities through which different cultures and lifestyles of each country and ethnic group undergo some integration with the existing host society. There are limitations in identifying the lack of statistical data and the representation of a minority proportion of foreign residents. In order to analyze the core elements of the integrated strategy of the local community, the residential behavior and spatial characteristics of foreign migrants must first be identified.

  • Achievement profile by attribute in Korean students' mathematics was analyzed by applying cognitive diagnostic model, which is the newest measurement theory, to 2011 NAEA(National Assessment of Educational Assessment) results. The results are as follows. As the level of school is higher from 6th grade, 9th grade to 11th grade, the percentage of students mastering cognitive attribute 9(expressions using picture, table, graph, formula, symbol, writing, etc) drastically declined from 78%, 35% to 26%. It is necessary to have learning strategies to reinforce their abilities of expressing table, graph, etc. that higher graders in mathematics are more vulnerable to. Next, the property of mastering cognitive attributes according to gender, multi-cultural family was analyzed. In terms of mathematics, the percentage of girls mastering most of the attribute generally is higher than that of boys from 6th grade to 9th grade, however, boys show higher mastery in almost attributes than girls in the 11th grade. Compared to boys, the part where girls have the most trouble is attribute 9 in mathematics(expressions using picture, table, graph, formula, symbol, writing, etc). As international marriage, influx of foreign workers, etc. increase, the number of students from Korea's multi-cultural families is expected to be higher, therefore, identifying the characteristics of their educational achievement is significant in reinforcing Korea's basic achievement. In mathematics, gap of mastery level of attributes between multi-cultural group and ordinary group is more severe in higher grade and the type of multi-cultural group that needs supports for improving achievement most urgently changed in 6th grade, 9th grade and 11th grade respectively. In the 6th and 11th grade, migrant students from North Korea show the lowest level of mastering attributes, however, in the 9th grade, the mastery rate of immigrant students is lowest. Therefore, there is an implication that supporting plans for improving achievement of students from multi-cultural family should establish other strategies based on the characteristics of school level.

  • I.M. Pei, 2nd generation Chinese immigrant to America, has been one of the most recognized architects who designs museum architecture through out the world for completing significant projects such as the East Building of National Gallery of Art(1068-78) as well as Le Grand Louvre Renovation(1983-89) to name a few. His museum architecture, in particular, reveals his detailed consideration on viewer's artistic experience by providing well balanced architecture design to support exhibiting objects while showing his sensitivity on overall functionality of space. In recent projects such as Miho Museum in Japan, Suzhou Museum of China, and Museum of Islamic Art of Qatar, reveals his growing interests in considering "local context" in museum architecture. Therefore, the purpose of this study is focused on analyzing I.M. Pei's three museum projects having its concept focused on local context. Through out the paper, above mentioned museums were analyzed and compared to summarize his design characters and concept including site plan, spatial organization and architectural form. As a result, it is evident that I.M. Pei had put full effort to apply oriental context with modernism through out his museums. In particular, his site plan, spatial organization, and architectural form shows visible connection to comply with nature which is fundamental idea in oriental philosophy. While his basic design philosophy has been borrowed from the tradition, his ultimate design concept shows nature friendliness as well as theoretical system of thoughts and emotion and most of all, his design excellency in representing local context.
