Nano-Optical Investigation of Enhanced Field at Gold Nanosphere-Gold Plane Junctions

  • The local field distribution around gold nanosphere-gold plane junction has been studied using the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) electrodynamics calculation procedure. We find that both the in-plane and out-of-plane polarized excitation produce enhanced field strong enough to explain the observed SERS activities of the junctions. Comparison with a simple dipole-image dipole model shows that the enhanced field primarily originates from the multipole-image multipole interaction, which indicates that the detailed fine-structures of the nanoparticles also play a significant role in the SERS activities as well.

  • As a tool for strain measurement to work with screw driven or hydraulic material test systems, in which mechanical vibration is inherent, SSDG (Speckle Strain/Displacement Gage), ESP (Electronic Speckle Photography) and its 3-dimension version SDSP are evaluated for the theory and practical appliance. Through tension test of steel strips, their validity and shortcomings are examined. As the results, it has been shown that, although SSDG and ESP provide direct measurement of in-plane strain in one direction, they are so sensitive to the out-plane displacement. On the other hand, SDSP which is aided with DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technique to trace the movement of the speckles provides not only in-plane 2-dimensional displacement field, but also out-of-plane displacement simultaneously. However, because the DIC is time-consuming, not automated yet and it needs post-processing to evaluate strain from the displacement field, SDSP appears to be not adequate as a real time sensor.

부호변환 및 비트 평면 상관도를 이용한 웨이블릿 기반 영상 압축 (Image Compression Based on Wavelet Transform Using Shffling and Bit Plane Correlation)

  • 본 논문에서는 선형 위상 응답 특성을 갖고 쌍직교 웨이블릿 변환(biorthogonal wavelet transform)을 이용하여 영상을 다중 해상도롤 분해하고 분해된 부 밴드들을 최대 분할 이득(maximum classificatio gain)을 이용하여 분할하고 분할된 클래스 별로 최적 비트 할당을 통해 양자화 한 후, 컨텍스트 기반 비트 평면 부호화를 이용한 영상 압축 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 방법을 양자화 된 계수들에 대해 부호변환(shuffling)과정을 거쳐 비트 평면 부호화 시, sign 비트 평면을 제거하여 부호화 성능을 향상시키며, 컨텍스트(context)기반 비트 평면 부호화 시, 각각의 클래스 및 밴드별로 균일한(uniform)컨텍스트를 부여하지 않고 현재 비트 평면과 이전 비트 평면 사이의 상관도(correlation)를 측정하여 가장 큰 상관도를 갖는 방향으로 컨텍스트를 부여하여 보다 효율적인 부호화 성능을 얻는 방법으로 부호화를 통해 제안한 방법의 우수성을 입증하고자 한다.

Target segmentation in non-homogeneous infrared images using a PCA plane and an adaptive Gaussian kernel

  • We propose an efficient method of extracting targets within a region of interest in non-homogeneous infrared images by using a principal component analysis (PCA) plane and adaptive Gaussian kernel. Existing approaches for extracting targets have been limited to using only the intensity values of the pixels in a target region. However, it is difficult to extract the target regions effectively because the intensity values of the target region are mixed with the background intensity values. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel PCA based approach consisting of three steps. In the first step, we apply a PCA technique minimizing the total least-square errors of an IR image. In the second step, we generate a binary image that consists of pixels with higher values than the plane, and then calculate the second derivative of the sum of the square errors (SDSSE). In the final step, an iteration is performed until the convergence criteria is met, including the SDSSE, angle and labeling value. Therefore, a Gaussian kernel is weighted in addition to the PCA plane with the non-removed data from the previous step. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better segmentation performance than the existing method.

  • Experiments were conducted to show the characteristics of the flow on unventilated parallel plane jets. Measurements of mean velocity components and turbulent intensities were carried out with a particle image velocimetry to investigate the flow field generated by the air issued from two identical plane parallel nozzles and mixed with the ambient air. The measurements range of these experiments were Reynolds number of 5300 based on the nozzle width and the cases of nozzle-to-nozzle distance were four times. six times and eight times the width of the nozzle. Results show that a recirculation zone with a sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. The positions. where maximum value of mean turbulent intensities and mean turbulent kinetic energy show, were at the same position with the merging point. The spread of jets in the merging region increases more rapidly than that of Jets in the converging and the combined region. As nozzle-to-nozzle distances were increased. it was shown that merging and combined lengths were shorter.

  • The measuring of internal defects of objects using the shearography has many advantages. It is a non-contact and non-destructive method and It has a real time measurement speed and no constraints of object shape. Compared to ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry), Shearography has a very low error rate by vibration and air turbulence. So shearography provides possibilities of industrial application. In this paper, Image processing algorithm that is measurement of out-of-plane deformation using the shearography is proposed by developed using the LabVIEW 2010 and measurement result of out-of-plane ESPI and Shearography are compared quantitatively.

사진 속 피사체의 법선 벡터 예측에 기반한 햅틱 상호 작용 (Haptic Interaction with Objects Displayed in a Picture based on Surface Normal Estimation)

  • In this paper we propose a haptic interaction system that physically represents the underlying geometry of objects displayed in a 2D picture, i.e., a digital image. To obtain the object's geometry displayed in the picture, we estimate the physical transformation between the object plane and the image plane based on homographic information. We then calculate the rotated surface normal vector of the object's face and place it on the corresponding part in the 2D image. The purpose of this setup is to create a force that can be rendered along with the image without distorting the visual information. We evaluated the proposed haptic rendering system using a set of pictures of objects with different orientations. The experimental results show that the participants reliably identified the geometric configuration by touching the object in the picture. We conclude this paper with a set of applications.

Analytical Study of the Image Reconstruction of Fourier Holograms Using Varifocal Electric-Field-Driven Liquid Crystal Fresnel Lenses

  • A novel method is proposed for controlling the distance of an image plane in Fourier holograms using varifocal electric-field-driven liquid-crystal (ELC) lenses. Phase Fresnel lenses are employed to reduce the thickness and response time of the ELC lenses. The voltages applied to the electrodes of the ELC Fresnel lens are adjusted so that the lens has the same retardation distribution as an ideal lens. The focal length can be controlled by changing the retardation distribution with the applied voltages. Simulations were conducted for the image reconstruction of Fourier holograms with various focal lengths of the ELC Fresnel lenses. The simulation results indicate that the distance of the image plane can be properly controlled with the varifocal ELC Fresnel lens.

  • A core technology for implementation of Augmented Reality is to develop a merging algorithm between interesting 3-D objects and real images. In this paper, we present a 3-D object recognition method to decide viewing direction toward the object from camera. This process is the starting point to merge with real image and 3-D objects. Perspective projection between a camera and 3-dimentional objects defines a plane in 3-D space that is from a line in an image and the focal point of the camera.   • In this paper, we present a new morphological texture spectrum approach to obtain a surface orientation using the variation of texture image caused by projective distortions. Under the assumption that the surface of texture image is smooth continuous, and specially plane or sphere, we apply the mathematical morphology and texture spectrum in order to compute the 3-D surface orientation. If the surface of texture image is plane, the surface orientation can be obtained through a simple procedure. If the surface of texture image is sphere, we find the centroids of texels, and may compute several major axes, their slopes, and vanishing points. Using the texture spectrum between the intersections of the vanishing points and the size of elements in each texels, we can find the surface orientation of texels on the sphere.
