  • The advantage of direct volume rendering is to visualize structures of interest in the volumetric data. However it is still difficult to simultaneously show interior and exterior structures. Recently, cone beam computed tomography(CBCT) has been used for dental diagnosis. Despite of its usefulness, there is a limitation in the detection of interior structures such as pulp and inferior alveolar nerve canal. In this paper, we propose an efficient volume rendering model for visualizing important interior as well as exterior structures of dental CBCT. It is based on the concept of illustrative volume rendering and enhances boundary and silhouette of structures. Moreover, we present a new method that assigns a different color to structures in the rear so as to distinguish the front ones from the rear ones. This proposed rendering model has been implemented on graphics hardware, so that we can achieve interactive performance. In addition, we can render teeth, pulp and canal without cumbersome segmentation step.

  • Ghosted illustration is an effective tool to simultaneously visualize interior and exterior structures while preserving clear shape cues. We propose a novel framework that combines 3D blending technique, which uses depth information of the target structure, with the conventional ghosted illustration framework. This combination facilitates natural blending effects tailored to the needs of ghosted illustration. Furthermore, we present how common manipulation techniques (e.g., masking) and illustrative rendering effects (e.g., silhouette mapping) can be integrated into the proposed framework to preserve both clear shape cues and depth cues. For the compositing techniques, we show and discuss the visual results obtained from various combinations of them. This demonstrates that the proposed framework can be an effective tool for ghost illustration.

  • The requirement for high performance visualization of engineering analysis of digital products is increasing since the size of the current analysis problems is more and more complex, which needs high-performance codes as well as high performance computing systems. On the other hand, different companies or customers do not have all the facilities or have difficulties in accessing those computing resources. In this paper, we present a multi-view supporting VR/AR system for providing supercomputing-based engineering analysis services. The proposed system is designed to provide different views supporting VR/AR visualization services depending on the requirement of the customers. It provides a sophisticated VR rendering directly dependent on a supercomputing resource as well as a remotely accessible AR visualization. By providing multi-view centric analysis services, the proposed system can be more easily applied to various customers requiring different levels of high performance computing resources. We will show the scalability and vision of the proposed approach by demonstrating illustrative examples with different levels of complexity.

  • The Virtual Reality (VR) is an appealing subject which can be applied to various areas because of its merit - removal of time limits and space. Recently, as the technology of xDSL spreads widely, a concern of VR is on the on-line service of 3D model data in real time. But, the immensity of 3D model is an obstacle to achieve these endeavors. To solve these problems, the image based VR technique is applied. The proposed method in this paper is one of solutions on the immensity problem of 3D model data in the on-line services. This paper exploits the mixed technique of image based VR and surface rendering based on volume rendering. By using the proposed method, we can solve the immensity problem. Consequently, tole service user can explore virtual 2D volume model with almost equal to reality of 3D volume model. Furthermore, this paper explains a method to implement this service on general web environments. Of course, to fulfill these procedures, additional skills which reduce consuming time in data mining are also mentioned. The contribution of this paper is to provide a practical method for handling of large volume data web service in real-time. illustrative examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
