Improving quality of life can be achieved by rehabilitating one socially and restoring their sexual life. Holistic care for persons with disabilities means the rehabilitation nurse intervenes when problems of sexual function are discovered, observed, or expressed. However, most people with chronic illnesses and disabilities must confront prevalent myths about their sexual nature and abilities. These myths often have their basis in the notion, common in our society, that the only people who are sexual are those who are young and beautiful. People who are obese, old, or do not conform to current standards of sexual attractiveness are usually deemed as asexual or undesirable. These narrow sterotypes have been particularly damaging to physically or mentally disabled people. People with chronic illnesses and disabilities often have special needs regarding their sexual behavior. Most of us will confront chronic illness or disability in our own lives to some degree. In addition, illnss or disability can occur at any age. In this study, I discuss some of the special needs of people with chronic illnesses and disabilities and the methods of coping with those needs. I also discuss some of the sexual concerns that people with chronic illnesses and disabilities have in common, and the assessment of sexual function and nursing strategies through literature review.

The medicinal plants have been used as drugs for thousands of years and many of them are used in traditional medicines. How long are these medicinal plants used as drugs\ulcorner Ebers papyrus (BC 1550) is one of the oldest documents which described more than 700 kinds of herbal drugs. Some of herbal medicines described in the papyrus are familiar and ‘Opium’ is a good example. Some of the drugs described in the papyrus are hardly recognized as drugs by the standard of present day. We can trace back the history of medicinal plants from quite different approach. The investigations on group behavior of chimpanzees in Africa by ‘The Primate Institute of Kyoto University’ has revealed that chimpanzees suffered illness take specific plants which are not taken as daily food stuff. The chemical analysis clarified that the plants contain very bitter constituents and suggested that chimpanzees take medicinal plants to cure their illness. It is worth to note that young chimpanzees just learn what elder ones take when they suffer illness, but elders never teach to their children! It is no doubt that the chimpanzee's medicinal plants were found by random, and try and error screening. The medicinal plants found in this study have been used as herbal medicines by the peoples in the region.
Numbers of patients who have chronic pain seem to be increasing even in the psychiatric practice. One report in Korea showed more than 40% of psychiatric patients who visited out-patient clinic were suffered from chronic pain and one third of those patients were needed treatment for the on-going pain. For evaluating and treating those patients the charateristics of illness behavior should be understood. Abnormal Illness behavior was found as one of the most influential factors which led symptoms complicated and chronified. This symposium was planned to illustrate how to manage the patients whose pain are associated with arthropathy and connective tissue diseases, neuropathic pain and headache more effectively and efficiently. So, It is hoped to get fruitful knowledges for the management of chronic pain in the scope of consultation-liaison psychiatry.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an educational program regarding food safety for children. The data were collected from the results of a self-administered questionnaire that was given to 510 6th grade elementary school students in the Youngnam region who had undergone a food safety education program. The results of this study were as follows. First, the educational need for food safety was high in each food safety category, with the educational need for prevention against foodborne illness being the highest of the 10 categories. On the basis of the study results, educational materials were developed which targeted personal hygiene, food labeling, food purchase, food washing, food storage, cooking, foodborne illness prevention, food additives, endocrine disruptors, and illegal foods. Additionally, about 37% of the respondents aswered that they preferred the food safety education to be conducted at home. Second, the food safety education significantly improved the levels of knowledge and behavior of children toward food safety. These results imply that food safety education that addresses the concerns of children and their parents' is needed to improve the level of knowledge and behavior toward food safety.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the construct equivalence of the general five factors of health behavior and to compare the latent means between adolescents with a health problem and those without in Korea. Methods: The 2009 KYRBS (Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey) data were used for the analysis. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test whether the scale had configural, metric, and scalar invariances across the existence of health problems in adolescents. Results: Configural, metric, and factor invariances were satisfied for the latent mean analysis (LMA) between adolescents with health problem and those without. Adolescents with health problem and those without were not different in the LMA of all factors. Conclusion: Health providers should give more interest to the group of adolescents with health problems and consider prudential school life to the same group.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness and practice of Korean consumer on food safety. A telephone survey was conducted from 1,040 adults randomly selected from each province and large city of Korea. Therefore, 12.4% of the subjects experienced foodborne illness at least once a year and 0.3% was hospitalized due to the illness. General restaurant (37.2%) and home (21.2%) were the main causative place of foodborne illness, and the most frequently associated foods were meat and meat products (41.7%) and fish and fish products (18.7%). Regarding the causative agent of foodborne illness, the respsondents were aware of Cholera (75.5%), Vibrio gastroenteritis (73%), Shigellosis (65.5%), Bacillary dysentery (65.5%) and Salmonellosis (47.5%) very well; however very few were aware of Listeriosis (9.9%) and brucellosis (8.3%) and ever believed they were not food-related illness. When the survey data were analyzed based on 3 models (Model 1: Knowledge about the pathogens associated food and water, Model 2: The awareness of food safety, Model 3: Attitudes and behavior about foodborne disease prevention and measure) by Multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the awareness of the causative agent of foodborne illness was significantly related with the previous experience of foodborne illness (OR: 1.714) followed by education level (OR: 0.536) and married status (OR: 0.527). The awareness of food safety was significatly related with education level (OR: 0.702). Education (OR: 0.816) and gender (OR:0.650) were the main factors affecting the awareness of the practice to prevent foodborne illness. However, the previous experience of foodborne illness and food safety education, and the awareness of food safety did not show any correlation, suggesting that the experience and awareness of foodborne illness do not affect the real practice of food safety.

This study was conducted to examine attitudes and conception of community toward the mental illness. The data, which is used for this study was two questions, was extracted from National Health Behavior Examination survey. 1,051 were included for analysis, and frequency analysis, chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression were used. As a result, man has more positive attitude than women. old age group(>=65) was more positive than other age group significantly(p<0.05). In the educational aspect, people who graduate college or higher educated has negative attitude or conception to the mental illness, and middle school graduate group showed significantly positive attitude(p<0.05). The result of this study will present the reason and basic information for planning of mental health program in community.
This study was designed to investigate the content of health behavior and to examine factors determining health behavior of nursing students(n=159) in relation to sociodemographic and cognitive variables. Cognitive variables were categorized into saliency of health, susceptibility to illness, and health locus of control. Data analysis prodecure included factor analysis and stepwise multivariate regressions using health behavior as dependent variables. Analysis showed; 1. As a whole, nursing students showed a tendency of lack in positive health behavior, especially in diet-related health behavior. 2. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the factors such as grade, saliency of health, and birth place were to be independently and significantly associated with health behavior: Upper grade students, high level of saliency, urban-born students tend to take health behavior positively. 3. The most influential factor among them was grade, but cognitive inspite of stereotype, poorly impact on health behavior with the exception health. We can guess the effect of education indirectively from these findindgs, but longitudinal studies need to consider the direct effect of education. The results also indicate that the respondents should be encouraged to take health behavior positively. The studies including more other cognitive variables would be conducted for the nursing students in relation to health behavior.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to understand the experience of health behavior among elderly women. Method: Participants of this study were 8 healthy elderly women over 65, who live in city and town. The data were collected through in-depth interview and participant observation, analyzed by the Colaizzi(1978)'s phenomenal research method was adopted. The data collection period was from March to May of 2003. Result: The essential themes were 'desiring to keep oneself in good health even with aging body', 'receiving and living with illness', 'maintaining ones health with body activity', 'getting along with peace of mind' Conclusion: The study is significant because it provides viewpoints for understanding elderly women's experience of health behavior in the context of Korean culture. And also it provides guideline for elderly nursing intervention.
This study was conducted to assess the morbidity and medical facilities utilization patterns of the residents in urban low income area. Study population included 2,002 family members of 468 households in the low income area (LA) of Nam-san 4 Dong, Jung Gu of Taegu city and 1,709 family members of 374 households in surrounding neighbourhood control area (CA). Well trained nursing school students interviewed mainly with housewives according to the pretested questionaire between July 1 and July 30, 1984. Age-sex distribution of the study population in LA was similar to that in CA. The average monthly income of a household in LA was 236,000 won and 356,000 won in CA. Educational level of the residents in LA was lower than that in CA; average years of school education of the 20 years old or above in LA was 6.9 years compared with 8.5 years in CA. The average family members per room in LA was 2.6 and 2.2 in CA, and proportion of Medicaid program beneficiary was 29.4% in LA and 1.9% in CA. Prevalence rate of illness during 15-day period was 131 per 1,000 population in LA and 71 in CA(p<0.01) and that of the chronic illness for 1 year was 134 per 1,000 population in LA and 89 in CA(p<0.01). The most common illness experienced during 15 days was respiratory disease(24.0% in LA ana 29.8% in CA) and followed by gastro-intestinal disorders(21.0% in LA, 20.6% in CA). Injury or poisoning was 10.3% in LA and 3.3% in CA. Castro-intestinal disorder was the most common chronic illness in both LA (22.7%) and CA (21.7%), and followed by musculoskeletal disease in LA and neuralgia in CA. Mean activity restricted days among the persons with illness during 15-day period was 4.0 days in LA and 2.2 days in CA. Among persons with illness during 15 days, 17.9% in LA and 11.6% in CA did not seek any medical treatment and the most frequently utilized medical facility was pharmacy in LA (35.5%) and local clinic or hospital OPD in CA (42.1%). Among persons with chronic illness, 15.2% in LA and 9.2% in CA did not seek for medical treatment, and residents in LA as well as residents in CA utilized local clinic or hospital OPD more frequently than pharmacy or drugstores, especially those who have medical insurance. The most common reason for not treating illness experienced during 15-day period and chronic illness was economical constraint in both LA and CA. The higher prevalence rate of illness during 15-day period and chronic illness in LA than that in CA seems to be highly correlated with their lower economic status and educational level and crowded living condition. The utilization pattern of medical facilities was associated with the medical security status. A program to improve the economic status and living condition should be integrated with the health program to promote the health of the population in low income area.
